Finance Ministry has agreed to return to 8.8 percent interest rate on EPF deposits. Trade unions on Friday went on a day-long nationwide protest against Finance Ministry’s decision to fix 8.7 percent interest rate for employees provident fund subscribers, lower than 8.8 percent decid-ed by the EPFO. Facing strong protest from the trade unions over reduc-tion in EPF interest rate, Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said on Thurs-day that he will discuss the issue with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. “My ministry is exam-ining and shortly we are going to have a sitting

Rejecting Gujarat BJP’s announcement to give 10% reservation quota to economically backward candidates in general category, leader of oppo-sition Shri Shankersinh Vaghela today in a state-ment issued here said the ceiling of family income in EBC quota which has been kept Rs 6 lakh per year as per BJP announce-ment is not acceptable. It should be instead Rs 12 lakh income per fami-ly per year. Vaghela also said that 10% quota is not acceptable and it should be 20% instead.

The 10 per cent quota for Economically Backward Communities (EBC) an-nounced on Friday by the state government is a first for a prosperous state like Gujarat where the politi-cal verdict over the last two decades has been powered by the dominant agrarian community– the Patidars. Navy had objected to the Maharashtra government according permission for Occupation Certificates citing “serious security concerns” as the 100-me-tre tall building stood next to a planned helipad and military installations. It was also found that the so-

ciety didn’t obtain a NoC from the Ministry of Envi-ronment and Forests, and above all the society had permission to build only six floors. When bena-mi transactions were un-earthed, the Enforcement Directorate joined the probe. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s relatives, including his mother-in-law, owned three flats, a fact that cost him the post of Chief Minister. The probes also revealed that the society was granted permission when Mr. Chavan was the Revenue Minister.

Gujarat today announced a new 10 per cent quota in government jobs and colleges for the poorest among the upper castes. The move is expected to benefit the powerful Patel or Patidar commu-nity in the state, which has aggressively cam-paigned for reservation, led by their jailed leader Hardik Patel. But they say it weakens their cause. From May, those who earn less than Rs. 6 lakh a year will get quota if they are in the unreserved or general category, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Pa-tel said on Friday. The decision was taken at

a meeting of the Guja-rat BJP’s core group, which was attended by party chief Amit Shah. Quotas in Gujarat now add up to nearly 60 per cent, which exceeds the Supreme Court’s limit of 50 per cent. So far, sched-uled castes and tribes and OBCs or Other Backward Castes enjoyed 49.5 per cent reservation in the state. The ruling BJP, say sources, sees the move as a political expedient even

though it may not stand legal scrutiny. The party has been under pressure over the Patidar agita-tion and its recent losses in civic polls in the state that is due for elections next year. The Patidar community has rubbished the move. “It’s a lollypop. It won’t stand in court of law and is an attempt to weaken our agitation,” said Nikhil Savani, con-venor of the Patidar Ana-mat Andolan Samiti.

taken to Wadhwan in Gu-jarat via road for the last rites. Karnika’s mother, Asha, who was the first wife of Singh, had also died due to cancer in 2013. Karnika was mar-ried to Siddharth Singh Jhala of Wadhwan royal family in Surendra Nagar district of Gujarat. She is

survived by her husband and seven-year-old-son, Prabhavoday Singh Jha-la. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief over the demise of Digvi-jaya’s daughter. “The un-timely demise of Digvijay Singh’s daughter, Karni-ka Singh is very painful.

inclusion as OBCs, is ob-vious from the fact that the decision was taken by the core group of the BJP led by national pres-ident Amit Shah along

with Gujarat Chief Min-ister Anandiben Patel and Gujarat BJP chief and cabinet minister Vijay Rupani. Legally, there will be problems given

the Supreme Court’s 50 per cent cap on reserva-tion. But Rupani’s state-ment that the government is willing to fight right upto the apex court for

the sake of the EBC quo-ta, is already a disclaim-er of sorts. Currently in Gujarat, Other Backward Castes (OBCs) have a 27 per cent quota, the Sched-uled Castes (SCs) quo-ta is seven per cent and Scheduled Tribes (STs) get 15 per cent reserva-tion. The ordinance on the EBC quota will be issued on May 1, Guja-rat’s foundation day, to be applicable for an annual income cap of Rs 6 lakh — Rs 50,000 per month –for ‘upper-caste’ peo-ple excluding the OBC/ST/SC. This upper cap is likely to include a large chunk of upper-mid-dle class from the upper

castes which also forms a core vote bank of the BJP. It remains to be seen how the ordinance will define ‘upper-castes’ and, if the upper cap income of Rs 6 lakh per year will also apply to people from oth-er religions like Muslims and Christians. The im-mediate reason for the decision is the Patidar quota stir led by Hardik Patel who remains in jail on sedition charges even as five of his colleagues who were part of the ag-itation, were set free on bail, on Thursday. The Patidar community is not only the symbol of ‘up-per castes’ in Gujarat but also the backbone of the

BJP’s vote bank in the state. The Patidar agita-tion, that had started on July 6 last year is near-ly nine months old now. During the agitation Gujarat has witnessed a number of riots in BJP strongholds of Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Surat, etc. that have forced the gov-ernment to impose cur-few and restrict mobile internet services.

QUOTE OF THE

DAYSedition law brings only disrepute to governments that brandish it

Hardik Patel is about to complete 200 days behind bars. The government has put him away for the bet-ter part of a year for sedition, because of the ostensi-ble gravity and repeatability of his “offence”. Since these qualities remain unaltered, does it follow that his right to liberty stands suspended for all time? The continuing incarceration of Patel highlights yet again the absurdity of retaining Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, which governs sedition, on the statute books. By all accounts, the young activist has demonstrated an appetite and enthu-siasm for disturbing the calm, but criminal law is armed with numerous other provisions for dealing with such challenges. The demand for reservations raised by his Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti is political. Its methods are scarcely above reproach, but governments should engage with it politically, without reaching for magic bullets left over from the 19th century, like the sedition law. In this case — as is usually the case — the government’s re-sponse is completely out of proportion with the provocation, a video clip in which Hardik Patel is heard exhorting a supporter threatening suicide to kill some policemen instead. The strength of the police force was not thinned as a result, so this was just a case of Patel shooting his mouth off. But it was read as part of a “conspiracy” against the state, to “attempt to excite disaffection”. By that logic, a bunch of students grousing about the government would be seditious too. And so they were deemed to be. The arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar and his fellow travellers at JNU has been reviled as a direct attack on campuses and dissent. It has backfired, turning the student union leader into a celebrity of sorts, with an instant book deal thrown in. And yet, the government persists in believing that the charge of sedition is a handy cut-out switch to cow down in-convenient people. None of the celebrated sedition cases of recent years brought any credit to govern-ment. It failed to discredit Binayak Sen, Arundhati Roy and S.A.R. Geelani. Earlier this year, Ashis Nandy, who does not enjoy the material support of any political organisation, was forced to offer an apology for painting the Gujarat government in a poor light. But the government gained nothing by harassing the noted academic. It should appreciate that besides being colonial rather than democratic, Section 124A offers no tactical returns either. It is a loser on all counts.

“I definitely would like to return to India. Right now, things are flying at me fast and furious. My passport has been revoked. I don’t know what the government is going to do next,”

- The liquor baron Mr. Mallya says he wants a “reasonable” settlement with creditor banks for his de-funct airline, but they “are not getting any money” by taking his passport or arresting him.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was as much a Tamil as he was a mathematical prodigy. Indeed, he was a staunch Brahmin, in his mannerisms, speech and views, and if one were to alienate him from all these traits, the very char-acter may well suffer. This is precisely where Matthew Brown’s mov-ie on the mathematician, The Man Who Knew In-finity, seems to ring false, especially after Gnana Rajasekaran’s Tamil bi-opic on the genius, Ra-manujan, had been seen in 2014. Rajasekaran had ably captured the inti-mate nuances of the Tam-il Iyengar community. He had brought alive quite vividly the mood and es-sence of Ramanujan’s pe-riod, the stifling prejudic-es and so on. Take away all these from the man, he is as good as zero. Brown’s work somehow

When we come upon him first in his second film, ‘Baaghi’, we see Tiger Shroff upside down, bal-ancing his full weight on a thumb and forefin-ger. It is an impressive sight, to see someone so fit, so agile, so much in command of his body. It is the money shot of the film. Whenever we see Tiger doing something that involves his hands, legs, torso, head, all

moving in perfect sync, scything up, slashing down, revolving on the balls of his feet, we are watching: it is a pleasure to see this young actor move, no jerk, all flow. When he is in action, that is. When he is ‘act-ing’, he is still clearly a novice. But he makes up for that lack by being likeable, even when he is being forced to act like a rebel just so he can justi-fy the film’s title, in the first half of the film. Ron-

ny (Tiger Shroff) shows up at a ‘kalari’ (a Kerala martial arts school which teaches the ancient art of ‘kalaripayattu’) in order to hone his rough edges. The process of transfor-mation– from aimless ‘baaghi’ to a rebel with a cause– is familiar from many similar films, but there’s enough to keep us engaged through the in-teractions with a ramrod straight `guru’, who puts the young fellow through his paces.

Raees is reportedly based on Latif’s life. His son Mustaq Ahmad also sought injunction against the release of the film as well as its promotional

Farhan has al-ways blamed media for creating these linkups and controversies. This time, again Farhan has shown his anger towards media and he gave his support to Milkha Singh. Farhan has a great rapport with Milkha and he has even acted in the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. So, sure-ly he will know Milkha Singh both on a personal and professional level. And, he said everyone is entitled to their opinion and so is Milkha Singh. Farhan strongly believes that Milkha didn’t say anything against Salman

Khan but he wants sports-men to be the Goodwill Ambassador for the Rio Olympics 2016. Farhan brought to our notice that a lot of times statements are misquoted to create a controversy and wrong meanings are taken out of right statements to win the race of Trps. It’s part and parcel of show-biz but Farhan blaming media every time is not the solution either. When Salim Khan lashed out at Milkha Singh why didn’t he say that he had noth-ing against Salman Khan ? He preferred taking the credit for working hard in his life which is true but he even said that Bolly-wood didn’t do a favor for him by making a bi-opic based on him.

Lara Dutta and is slated to release on May 13. Prachi says that she got the best role in the film. “I think I hit the jackpot as I got the best role in the film. It was a huge challenge for me to play this role because I have never seen her nor read much about her,” she said.

From common flu to hepatitis to cervical cancer, immunization can prevent a series of dangerous diseases in adults or reduce the intensity of others. Despite being recognized as a life saver, the prac-tice of vaccination is yet to become commonplace in India to prevent diseases. In India, the concept of immunization is largely associated with chil-dren. Even the public awareness programs, such as for polio and chicken pox, primarily focus on im-munization of children. However, not many people are aware about the fact that vaccinations can be useful at each and every stage of life from youth to advanced years. As per the statistics record-ed by World Health Organization, immunization averts nearly 2-3 million deaths annually. Further, improved coverage of global immunization could help in avoiding an additional 1.5 million deaths. On the occasion World Immunization week, doc-tors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad have taken the initiative in line with WHO’s theme of “Close the immunization gap” to create awareness about importance of vaccination in all age groups.

Two consecutive drought years have already made farmers’ lives miserable in Rajasthan, and they believe, a third is on the way. However, the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has passed two new land reform Bills that will im-pact farmers. This legis-lation is almost identical to the Centre’s Land Ac-quisition (amendment) Bill 2015, which was re-jected by the farmers of the country. On April 6, the last day of its Budget Session, the Vasundhara Raje-led state government passed the Special Invest-ment Region Bill and the

Land Pooling Scheme. This came barely a week after neighbouring state Gujarat had passed its own Land Acquisition Bill. Gujarat passed “Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Ac-quisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Gujarat Amendment) 2016” on March 31, the last day of its Budget Session. A year ago, the BJP government at the Centre had intro-duced “The Right to Fair Compensation and Trans-parency in Land Acquisi-tion, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amend-ment) Bill, 2015 (LARR)” in the Lok Sabha on Feb-ruary 24, 2015.

Gujarat High Court Thursday issued a no-tice to the state Govern-ment on a petition filed by the online retail major Flipkart against the en-try tax in the state on the goods bought through the e-commerce portals. The division bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Red-dy and Justice V M Pan-choli scheduled the next hearing for June 9. rat Government amend-ed the law to levy entry tax on goods purchased through e-commerce por-tals, apparently to pro-vide a level-playing field to the traders and retailers
