QUOTE OF THE

DAYPM Modi’s military diplomacyIndia’s simultaneous military exercises this week with the United States and Japan on the one hand and China on the other have drawn some attention. Some analysts view them as India’s delicate military balancing act between Asia’s competing great pow-ers. Others see it as the contemporary expression of India’s enduring tradition of non-alignment. Neither interpretation sounds right. It is probably a mere coincidence that the naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal between India, Japan and the United States and the counter terrorism exercises in the Yunnan province between the Indian and Chinese armies are taking place at the same time. A lot of factors go into scheduling these kinds of exercises. The Min-istry of Defence in Delhi does not have the time, inclination or the capacity to time them for some presumed political effect. In contrast, the argument that the simultaneous exercises are an expression of non-alignment seems a lot more credible. Yet, it is difficult to visualize India’s engagement with the U.S. and China in terms of non-alignment. During the Cold War, India’s non-alignment dealt with two rival great powers —U.S. and Soviet Russia — that did not share any frontiers with India. China, in con-trast, has a long and disputed border with India. Be-sides the challenge on the border, Delhi feels threat-ened by Beijing’s ties with Pakistan and other South Asian neighbours of India. That Beijing and Wash-ington affect India’s security calculus differently is borne out by one simple fact. China sits on territory claimed by India; America does not. To be sure, In-dia continues to be concerned about U.S. ties with Pakistan; but over the last decade Delhi has seen the evolution of a more balanced U.S. approach to India and Pakistan. China, however, remains reluctant to take into account India’s concerns about Pakistan. Some in Delhi see that partnership with America is critical in balancing China’s rapidly rising military power. Beijing’s challenge to U.S. primacy in Asia has complemented this view and formed the basis for a complex dynamic between Delhi, Beijing and Washington. The UPA government was afraid that drawing too close to the U.S. and Japan might pro-voke China. Because of the problems on the bound-ary, the UPA government was also reluctant to wid-en the engagement with Beijing. Modi, in contrast, is not defensive at all. The PM seems to believe that a stronger security partnership with America will enhance India’s national power expand its room for geopolitical manoeuvre with China. At the same time, Modi is also eager to broaden economic ties with Bei-jing and better manage the conflict on the border.

“When you attack the chief minister of this state, you are insulting the people who elected him,”

Gunasekhar’s bilingual historical costume dra-ma in Tamil and Telugu, Rudhramadevi, certain-ly captures the spirit and valour of the 13th centu-ry queen who ruled Ka-katiya, a small kingdom in what is today Andhra Pradesh. But her corona-tion was not smooth, for her father and king had to hide for many years the fact that his child and heir to the throne was not a

In times when people were averse to a queen as head, and with many de-tractors to the kingdom waiting to grab it, a clever prime minister, Shiva De-viah (played by Prakash Raj with admirable ease and dignity), helps Rudh-ramadevi ( Anushka Shetty, who for long dis-guises as a boy/man and calls herself Rudhradeva) through wily statecraft to retain her hold over the kingdom. Experts have raised concerns over the imple-mentation of telecom regulator Trai’s new rules regarding the compensation to consumers for call drops. Under the rule, mobile users will get a compensation of Re 1 for every dropped call from January 1 but it will be limited to a maxi-mum three dropped calls in a day. However, the compensation will be given only if the call drop takes place due to the calling party’s network and not because of the receiving operator’s network. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has said that telecom operators from whose net-work call is originated will have to compensate customer if the call gets disconnected because of fault in its network. “If a call drop happens be-cause of the network, than compensation has to be given,” Trai Secretary Sudhir Gupta said.

FC Pune City will take on unbeaten Atletico de Kol-kata side at home which promises to be an exciting battle in match No. 14 on Saturday in the Indian Su-per League (ISL) 2015 at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapa-ti Sports Complex Stadi-um in Pune. The Stallions are looking for their third victory in this season’s ISL. The side lies fourth in the table and a victory could see them go atop. A draw will also see them rise above. Atletico mean-while, have continued from where they left from last season and beat Kera-la Blasters by a 2-1 margin in their last match. Pune lost their last encounter at home to the Delhi Dy-namos and will want to win at their backyard this time. Atletico will provide

The best way to describe the relationship between Dinesh Karthik and the sweep-shot would prob-ably be, “it’s complicat-ed”. There are days on which the two look made for each other, when the diminutive right-hander is pulling it off with non-chalance, regardless of what length or line the ball is pitching on. And then there are other days where the two come across as strange bedfel-lows, especially when

Karthik has botched an uncalled for premedi-tated sweep and holed out in the deep or been bowled around his legs. Yet, somehow, through good times and bad, the two have stuck with each other. The sweep shot in many ways also defines Karthik’s enigmatic ca-reer. On days when he’s on song and showcas-ing his full repertoire of strokes, it’s generally the sweep that dominates the highlight reel. Like was the case at the BKC as he

scored a scintillating 167 to propel Tamil Nadu to 434 after a cagey start to their innings before the visitors reduced Mum-bai to 45/2, dismissing the in-form Shreyas Iyer, to finish Day Two in a dominant position. But at the same time, it is the sweep that he gets wrong — both in terms of tim-ing and execution — that show up his greatest fail-ure. Maybe Karthik could be justified if he were to say, “It’s not me. It’s the sweep-shot.”

England paceman James Anderson enlivened an otherwise dull first Test with two wickets to leave Pakistan struggling at 35-2 at lunch on the fifth and final day at Abu Dha-bi on Saturday. Anderson dismissed opener Shan Masood (one) and Shoaib Malik (nought) in the third over as Pakistan’s second innings started disastrous-ly on a weary Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch. Mohammad Hafeez (32) and Younis Khan (two) re-stored calm, but Pakistan still trailed by 40 after En-gland took a 75-run lead in the first innings. England announced closure of their first innings at 598-9 in reply to Pakistan’s 523-8 declared. That left the first Test heading for a tame draw, barring an extraordi-nary Pakistan collapse in

West Indies’ hopes of avoiding a heavy defeat rested on Darren Bravo (31), who scored a 50 in the first innings, but the left-hander edged Nuwan Pradeep behind after cap-tain Angelo Mathews’ de-

cision to allow the pace-man one more over was vindicated. Blackwood and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin (11) stitched to-gether a dogged 48-run stand for the sixth wicket before Siriwardena ended the pair’s resistance when Ramdin edged a catch to Kaushal Silva at second slip. The second match of the two-test series starts in Colombo on Thursday.

three deliveries before Anderson’s bouncer sur-prised him as his evasive shot landed safely in Jon-ny Bairstow’s hands. You-nis also survived a shaky start, but Hafeez, fresh from his 98 in the first knock, hit four boundaries and a six to ease some of the pressure.

The draw, which can cause a few butterflies in the stomach sometimes, I don’t think it matters anymore,” Shiva told in an interview after return-

ing to the country in the wee hours this morning. “I will give WSB a shot because there is a chance to qualify for Olympics from there. So that is definitely on my mind and should work out by November. If it doesn’t, then the Asian Olympic qualifiers are also there in March,” said Shiva, who was part of the USA WSB franchise last year.

a stern test for the hosts and this in all could set the fans for a hard fought battle. We look at players who could make a major impact in the game for both the teams. Gourman-gi Singh (FC Pune City): The Indian international is a pivotal defender for the Stallions. Gourmangi has been trusted by his coach and he is a solid customer. A lot of Pune’s fortunes lies with Gourmangi’s performance in keeping the defensive structure in-tact. The central defender

has an excellent range of passing, composure, tackles and interceptions. He will provide a stiff challenge for the ATK defenders. Borja Fernan-dez (ATK): The Spanish midfielder has stood tall and delivered in all of ATK’s games so far. Bor-ja showed his class and calmness in the centre of the pitch for ATK. That serves as a bonus for his manager and the added responsibility of leading the side looks to get out his best.

Patidar agitation leader Hardik Patel on Friday threatened to prevent India and South Africa teams from reaching the stadium for the ODI match in Rajkot. He alleged that the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) had sold tickets to BJP work-ers, who will protest during the match and then blame it on his commu-nity. The SCA said tick-ets sold were accounted for and documented. In a video message, shared on social media, Har-dik, convernor of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), alleged ‘irregu-larities’ in sale of tickets by the cricket association for the ODI match to be played on SCA Stadium in Khanderi village, on the outskirts of the city

this Sunday. “Saurash-tra Cricket Association should clarify why they declared that all tickets are sold in spite of the fact that many tickets re-main unsold. PAAS will block the way of both the teams (India and South Africa) to the stadium (on the match day) and we will also gherao the entire stadium,” said Hardik. PAAS is one of the groups leading the agitation by the Patidars or the Patel community in Gujarat demanding status of Other Backward Classes (OBC) and resul-tant reservation benefits in government jobs and admissions to institutes of higher education. The 22-year-old leader fur-ther alleged that SCA had sold tickets to BJP work-ers but his communi-ty-members were denied
