QUOTE OF THE

DAYWhy the death in Dadri affects the national project under PMThe daughter saw the bigger picture. She sounds like the mature one among all those who are grabbing this opportunity to dissolve this incident into the bigger is-sue and make it political. She has been asking us: Can her father be brought back if proved innocent? Being the father of a daughter, I can feel the pain in her eyes. Mohammad Akhlaq shouldn’t be dead. Lynching a person merely on suspicion is absolutely wrong, the antithesis of all that India stands for and all that Hin-duism preaches. Violence of this kind in a state like UP affects national goals. India is on the path to redis-covering itself through an all-inclusive development mission, whose success depends on how fairly we can make every Indian feel the confidence of being a co-traveller. The buzz that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created the world over needs a convergence of minds — no matter which party or ideology you belong to. Akhilesh Yadav is as much a part of this project as any other state leader. Better governance in his state helps this project; bad governance derails the principal objectives of our nation. Daughters are pre-cious for this journey. But I wonder why there was no outcry from the secular media and leaders when Tika Lal Taploo was killed by jihadis and his daughter was left alone in this world. The secular brand of com-munalism is more lethal sometimes than the bullets of violent people. The violent reactions of the Dadri kind must remain an aberration. They raise a question for so-called liberal Muslims: Have you done any-thing to show Hindus that you stand with them when they are assaulted by the Andrabis? Muslim silence on Hindu woes is often taken as support for intolerant Islamists. In many parts of India, cow slaughter is a serious offence. But it should be handled via the law-ful path that the Constitution has provided us. Sadly, secular celebrations of “beef festivals”, as well as the provocative butchering of a cow in a bazaar for polit-ical mileage, have pushed a society that worships the cow as mother to question the real motive of the sec-ulars. The Modi phenomenon has taken the world by surprise. The world is looking at India with awe and appreciation like never before. Should we allow emo-tive religious matters that concern our personal beliefs to derail what we have achieved through painstaking struggle? The UP government should take serious note of this. In no society and in no era has extrem-ism ever succeeded in providing an atmosphere for growth that encompasses the arts, education, agricul-ture, science, technology and, of course, poetry.

“The PM has announced to deposit Rs 15-20 lakh in every citizen’s bank account from the black money brought back to the country. What happened to the promise? The BJP government has also failed to fulfill the promises made to the youth,” - Continuing his attack on the BJP,

chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday said addressing series of election rallies at Suryagarha, Bariarpur, Veeerpur and Tazpur.

In one of the scenes, a tad bone-lazy (in the movie) Kay Kay Menon asks Akshay, kon hai tu? to which he responds, “Singh...Raftaar Singh,” in a similar fashion as Bond would introduce himself in a 007 flick. Well, our desi-version, or rather Punjab-da-munda Raftaar Singh, ‘bliing’s on his sardaar avatar with some of his trade-

Prabhudhe-va is known for lacing his films with masala, naach-gana and masti – movies like ‘Rowdy Ra-thore’, ‘Action Jackson’ are a testimony to it. So, we know, even this time it is going to be a roll-er-coaster ride high on razzmatazz. Akshay, on

the other hand, had quite a good year so far with ‘Baby’, ‘Brothers’ and ‘Gabbar is Back’. So, we all know that audience had high hopes from him for this one. The Modi government’s declaration window un-der the new Black Money Act, which ended on Wednesday, saw all of 638 declarations worth Rs.3,770 crore, according to an official release. This amount is Rs 2,800 crore less than what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared he would re-cover, during his Red Fort speech on Independence Day, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said. Mr. Modi had promised to recover Rs.6,500 crore immediately. “It is the question of what was promise. Mr. Modi promised to bring back Rs. 80 lakh crore, within 100 days, he said. “The biggest promise was Rs. 15 lakh would be deposited in every citizen’s bank account…. Amit Shah now says this was only a jumla (platitude)… On Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister says he doesn’t know how much black money is out there. It means the person who misled the nation must apologise,” he.

Portabella mushrooms may be key to making effi-cient and longer-lasting batteries that could power cellphones and electric vehicles, scientists say. Re-searchers at the University of California, Riverside Bourns College of Engineering have created a new type of lithium-ion battery anode using portabella mushrooms, which are inexpensive, environmen-tally friendly and easy to produce. The current in-dustry standard for rechargeable lithium-ion bat-tery anodes is synthetic graphite, which comes with a high cost of manufacturing because it requires tedious purification and preparation processes that are also harmful to the environment. With the an-ticipated increase in batteries needed for electric vehicles and electronics, a cheaper and sustainable source to replace graphite is needed. UC Riverside engineers were drawn to using mushrooms as a form of biomass because past research has estab-lished they are highly porous, meaning they have a lot of small spaces for liquid or air to pass through.

Virender Sehwag kick-started the 2015-16 Ran-ji Trophy season with a 92-run knock for his new state side Haryana against Maharashtra in Pune on Thursday. Sehwag showed once again that class is permanent and age, just 18 days shy of 37, is just a number. The former Delhi player and captain played with grace and responsibility as his 92 came off 129 balls that setup a solid score of 303 for 6 for the visiting side at the end of first day’s play. Leading from the front at the Maharashtra Cricket Association, Se-hwag came in to bat at number three and forged a crucial 124-run fourth wicket stand with cen-turion Himanshu Rana,

Umesh Yadav is supposed to take wickets right? Wrong. The lanky pac-er has just added another dimension to his CV by doing something which many didn’t expect from him. A more than a run a ball century for Vidarbha against Odisha in their first match of the Ranji Trophy season at Vidar-bha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nag-pur. The home team were given a solid foundation by Aditya Shanware who scored a ton on Thursday. But as the heavyweights like Wasim Jaffer and S Badrinath failed, Vidar-bha were struggling at 279 for 7 when Umesh came to the crease. After that what followed was sheer domination with the willow as the Kolk-ata Knight Riders pacer

Manoj Tiwary has been appointed Bengal Ran-ji captain. He replaces Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who stepped down in the wake of reported dress-ing room unrest during the team’s pre-season tour of Sri Lanka. The International Cricket Council (ICC) launched the official ICC Wom-en’s Team Rankings on Thursday in which the results of all three for-mats of cricket namely T20, ODI and Test will be incorporated into one rankings system. React-ing to the launch, Indian skipper Mithali Raj said, “I am happy to know that the ICC has launched the ICC Women’s Team Rankings. There will now

be added context when the sides play in bilateral series as victories will not only edge teams closer to the ICC Women’s World Cup but will also be re-warded in terms of im-provement in rankings.” Bangladesh replace West Indies in ICC Champions Trophy 2017. “For In-dia, the aim is simple and straight – qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 and, in the mean-time, top the rankings. It will be challenging but

not impossible, and if we continue to work hard, I don’t see why we can’t achieve these objec-tives,” she added. Aus-tralia is ranked number one following its suc-cess in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 in India and the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2014 in Bangladesh. It also leads the ICC Women’s Cham-pionship, which is the qualifying tournament for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017.

Harbhajan Singh, R Ash-win and Amit Mishra looking to impart revs on the ball and following one another in their run-up at the far corner of the training ground nets suggested India were having a conclave of spinners. Axar Patel was sharpening his throwing and catching across the field. All four spinners are vying for skipper Mahendra Singh Dho-ni’s attention. Now, that is not taking into account Suresh Raina’s occasion-al off-spin. It only re-

flects Dhoni’s affinity for spinners. He sees that as the core strength to such an extent that his spin-ners in the ODIs often bowl even those overs that one would expect to be the pacers’ quota.Bhuvneshwar Kumar has repeatedly not been bowled his full quota due to this push for spinners. Dhoni has given his rea-sons while defending his heavy dependence on spinners - dew, lack of death bowlers, brown turners, concern over penalty for slow over rate etc. As India gear up for the tour opening Twen-

ty20 against South Afri-ca on Friday, it is back to Dhoni’s school of lead-ership, which is stifling the opposition with spin. It is a format where con-ceding 7-8 runs an over is far more appealing to Dhoni than pinning hopes on pace without being sure what would be the amount of damage. Dho-ni’s spin plans go beyond this series. With one eye on the ICC WorldT20 to be played in India early next year, he has made it clear how the three-match T20 series will be a dress rehearsal for finalising his spin combination.

who hit unbeaten 138 off 236 balls. Haryana were reeling at 32 for three with Rahul Dewan (6), Chaitanya Bishnoi (4) and Sachin Rana (7) back in the hut when Sehwag and Himanshu started the rebuilding act. There were no half measures in Sehwag’s approach as he counter-attacked the Maharashtra attack com-prising Samad Fallah, Shrikant Mundhe, Dom-inic Mutthuswamy and

Nikit Dhumal. Sehwag displayed his trademark cuts, slashes and drives as his 50 came off 73 balls. With a reliable partner in Himanshu, Se-hwag raised the tempo in the post lunch session and just when it looked that India’s only triple centurion in Tests would score a century, a deliv-ery from medium pacer Mundhe moved a shade and knocked his off stump back.

the first innings. Umesh’s first class batting average is a mere 12.25 and in Tests it’s 7.75. But times are changing and with the Indian team having more than one player for every slot, the century can help the right hander to stake his claim in the team in the near future.

The ongoing crisis in Syria has prompted cum-in seed (jeera) importers to turn to India, especial-ly Gujarat, to source the commodity. The jeera exports from the coun-try in 2014-15 were 55% higher than the target set for the year. Higher de-mand and lower prices also aided to the growth in jeera export. As per the data available with the Spices Board of In-dia, India’s jeera exports stood at 1.55 lakh tonnes in 2014-15, while the tar-get for the year was set at 1 lakh tonnes. “Syria is our major competitor in jeera export market. Due to the growing threat of ISIS and ongoing crisis in Syria, buyers chose to import from India fu-elling the export of the commodity in 2014-15,” said Bhaskar Shah,

vice-chairman, Spices Board of India. Gujarat and Rajasthan account for almost 90% of the to-tal jeera produced in the country. Jeera produc-tion in 2014-15 was es-timated to be around 2.5 lakh tonnes as against 4 lakh tonnes in the previ-ous year. Apart from In-dia, Syria and Turkey are other major producers of jeera. “The sowing and production of jeera suf-fered heavily due to the turmoil in Syria. Also, importers are treading cautiously while dealing with Syrian exporters. As a result, countries like Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore and Sri Lanka looked at India for meet-ing their jeera require-ments,” added an export-er from Unjha, a top jeera trading hub in Asia. Syr-ia exports around 20,000 tonnes annually.

His art marked a historic turn in development of In-dian modern art and real-ism at the turn of the 20th century. But deep down Raja Ravi Varma had the deepest regard for the pa-tron of art Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III. On his 109th death anniversary on Oc-tober 2, Raja Ravi Varma’s kin in Kerala recall how the great artist had wished that the Baroda Maha-raja be the chief guest at the house warming of the ‘Puthanmalika’- the grand new bungalow that Varma had started to build at his birth place Kilimanoor in 1904 for his 60{+t}{+h} birthday! But he died in 1906 at the age of 58 and

never lived to see his bun-galow through. This fact emerged only recently as the Kerala state archae-ology department started conservation activities at the Puthanmalika recently. “The bungalow designed by Raja Ravi Varma was to house a gallery of his artworks. He had special-ly introduced European architectural elements in this bungalow keeping in mind the tastes of the Sir Gaekwad. Today it is on us trustees managing the Chitrashala and the palace to turn the Puthanmalika into pilgrimage for the art world-like Raja Ravi Var-ma would have wished,” says Rama Varma of the Kilimanoor palace trust.

Additional DGP Vipul Vijoy, head of the motor transport and wireless communication division, has gone on leave after a complaint that he “con-fined” some police per-sonnel at his home. The allegations are currently under investigation. The government on Thursday handed over charge of the communication division to ADGP Vinod Mall, who heads the SC, ST and weaker sections cell and also holds three other ad-ditional charges. Before he handed over the charge, Vijoy issued suspension orders to sub-inspector Pankaj Sachde for “dere-liction of duty” and clerk Manoj Patel for “misbe-

haviour”. On Wednesday, 13 policemen, includ-ing Sachde and assistant sub-inspectors, wireless technicians and police drivers had lodged a com-plaint at the police control room alleging that Vijoy had kept them confined to his bungalow at the Gu-jarat Police Academy in Karai, Gandhinagar. In-spector General of Police (Gandhinagar) Hasmukh Patel, along with other police officers, has start-ed preliminary investiga-tions into the allegation on directions from DGP P C Thakur and recorded statements of the com-plainant policemen. “The event was part of cultural programme known as “gher” in Gu-jarati, in which events are organised to collect donation from audienc-es which is then used for certain good causes. At the September 20 event, money was collected as donation for cow protec-tion. This is a Gujarati tradition widely preva-lent in Saurashtra region. lems,” said Kamat, who was on a one-day visit to the state. For a party that has capitalized on Kshatriya, Hindu, Adiva-si and Muslim (KHAM) politics in Gujarat, Con-gress’ support for EBC quota ahead of Bihar polls and civic elections in Gujarat is seen as an apparent bid to tap into unrest in the middle class vote bank consolidated by the BJP . “We demand that the Narendra Mo-di-led NDA government declare 15-20% EBC

reservation. If Modi gov-ernment fails, we openly commit the next Con-gress government to do this,”, said Kamat. While Patidars have been de-manding OBC status, Gujarat Congress presi-dent Bharatsinh Solanki clarified the party does not support any change in the existing OBC quo-ta. “We will not support any change in the present 49% quota for OC, SC and ST but will support inclusion under the new EBC quota,” he said.

Almost 68 per cent of all inmates in the 1,387 jails in the country are under-trials, according to the latest figures released by the National Crime Re-cords Bureau (NCRB) for 2014. Over 40 per cent of all undertrials re-main in jail for more than six months before being released on bail. The percentage of undertrial prisoners who remain in jail for more than three months has also gone up from 62 per cent in 2013 to 65 per cent in 2014. The data looks worse when compared to previ-ous years which showed a declining trend. In 2012, the figure stood at 62.3 per cent. Accord-ing to the NCRB data, Goa, Jammu and Kash-mir, Gujarat and Punjab are the worst performing states, with over 75 per

cent of undertrials re-maining in jail for over three months. On the other hand, Kerala and Tripura recorded the lowest such cases — 35 per cent and 32 per cent respectively. A large number of undertrials remain in jails due to their inability to secure bail. The highest per-centage (27.3 per cent or 63,225 of the total 2,31,962) of undertrials under IPC crimes were charged with murder. Uttar Pradesh reported 17.9 per cent of such undertrials, followed by Bihar at 8.8 per cent. A

total of 6,274 convicts were habitual offenders. The NCRB data shows that there were 4,18,536 inmates in various jails against a capacity of 3,56,561. Chhattisgarh (259 per cent) and Del-hi (222 per cent) were among those which re-ported high overcrowd-ing. Muslims continue to form a large share of the undertrial popula-tion, with their numbers being disproportionate to their overall popula-tion. According to the 2011 census, Muslims constitute 14.2 per cent of India’s population.
