QUOTE OF THE

DAYVirat a great batsman, who handles pressure with grace

Something special is blowing across Indian cricket. In some ways, it’s a reminder of the 1990s, when Sachin Tendulkar owned the television remote. While Virat Kohli has similar emotional effects on the fans, one difference stands out — his composure. Tendulkar bore far greater pressure, in a cricketing nation find-ing its backbone. He was the middle-class Marathi boy who grew up with the tag of genius. There was much to handle, and to his credit he did. But, unsur-prisingly, the pressure showed. Kohli is different in the way he came up in Indian cricket. As soon as he won the Under-19 World Cup, he was cast as the boy who couldn’t handle success. He couldn’t get going on his Test debut and had to be dropped. He was a good batsman but he had the swagger of a genius. But in the end, ambition won out and suddenly, things changed. Rather, he changed them. He grew more dis-ciplined, became fitter, turned more professional. A good batsman has willed himself to be a great batsman (in limited-overs cricket), who soaks in the harshest of pressures with more finesse than most other Indian cricketers. For someone with a feisty temperament, he retains a control seldom seen in Indian cricket. Where will we place these last two breathtaking knocks? In some ways, they were like Tendulkar’s Desert Storms. As good as those knocks were — and bear in mind, they were in the longer 50-overs format. Kohli’s have come in T20s, with its shorter duration to handle pressure, which can be more intense. Moreover, they have come in a World Cup event and against two different teams on two varying tracks. The Pakistan game was a turner, the Australian one was a sluggish will-bender. Both re-quired different skills, but Kohli came through in style. Kohli fears no one. Tendulkar struggled appalling-ly against James Anderson late in his career. Another former cricketer, who agrees to speak on the condition of anonymity, says that no discernible shortcoming is what makes Kohli better than Tendulkar. “Tendulkar struggled against a particular type of bowler or oppo-sition. You could get at him. With Kohli, he treats ev-erybody with the same disdain. And, his self-belief is incredible.” Another former cricketer, on the condition of anonymity, says that Kohli’s ability to manipulate the opposition and his chanceless style of batting is what sets him apart. “Once he’s in, he’s in. He just doesn’t give you a chance. And, you can’t say that about too many batsmen,” he says. Self-belief, which makes him withstand the pressure in crunch situa-tions, is something ingrained deep in Kohli’s persona; the “don’t worry, I will get you home” kind of stuff. “He has always liked a challenge. More important, he wants to overcome that challenge.

“We have seen a video released by Pakistani authorities of a former Indian naval officer, doing business in Iran, who is in Pakistani custody under unexplained circumstances,”- The Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday dismissed, as baseless, remarks made by an alleged Indian spy in a video

released by Pakistan in which he “confessed” New Delhi’s alleged involvement in terrorist activities in Balochistan..

The anchor said, “Please change the ques-tion,” but Kangana went on to reply, “If a person wants to propose to me, well, good, at least they won’t be sending me no-tices anymore. Soon you will be able to make landline calls, in-cluding free calls, from apps like WhatsApp, Skype and Viber in India. According to a TOI report, an inter-ministerial panel on Monday gave a clear-ance for inter-connect agreements between inter-net service providers and telecom operators. While some chat apps, for example Viber, already allow people to call landline numbers, this functionality comes at a price. The users have to pay extra for landline calls compared to something like Viber-to-Viber calls in which the only expense is for the data. With the inter-connect agreements in place, users of chat apps will most likely won’t have to pay extra. These calls to landlines numbers will be

treated similar to calls made within the app.

Higher rates of breastfeeding, use of vaccinations and lower rates of smoking by mothers may re-duce the risk of ear infections in babies, accord-ing to new research. Researchers from The Uni-versity of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, US, found that rates of ear infection have dropped significantly since similar studies were conducted in the late 1980s and 1990s. They suggested that higher rates of breastfeeding, use of vaccinations and lower rates of smoking may be the major con-tributors. The study, led by Tasnee Chonmaitree, professor in the department of pediatrics, found that rates of ear infection dropped from 18 to 6% in three-month-olds, from 39 to 23% in six-month-olds and from 62 to 46% in one-year- olds. From October 2008 to March 2014, investigators followed 367 babies, less than one month old

through their first birthday.

Satisfied with England‘s campaign so far in the ICC World Twenty20, captain Eoin Morgan today said every player of his side has showcased his ver-satility during the tour-nament which has made the side a “powerful” unit heading into tomorrow’s semifinal against New Zealand. In two matches, England batsmen scored big against West Indies and South Africa while spinners defended a small total against Afghanistan. The pacers were also bril-liant at the death against

Sri Lanka en route their last four entry. “We ha-ven’t had to repeat the same thing twice. We showed different sides to everyone’s personali-ty, what they have got as opposed to just what they do on a day-to-day basis. That shows the group as a whole can be very pow-erful,” Morgan told me-diapersons ahead of his team’s semi-final against New Zealand tomorrow. Morgan exuded quiet confidence but insisted that his team is still quite far from the final spot. “I feel excited. I don’t feel

New Delhi: South Africa T20 captain Faf du Ples-sis has attributed his side’s failure to reach the semi-finals of the World Twen-ty20 to costly mistakes committed during league games against England and West Indies. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, South Africa once again failed to live up to their reputation as they lost a high-scoring game against England before losing a low-scoring affair against West Indies. South Af-rica finished third in Group 1 after claiming an eight-wicket consolation victory over defending champions Sri Lanka in

On Sunday against Aus-tralia in the ICC World T20, India captain MS Dhoni once again hit the winning runs in the final over. But it was captain-in-waiting Vi-rat Kohli who bent the Australian bowlers to his will to create the victo-ry. He came in to bat in the fourth over and was still there when Dhoni smacked James Faulkner to the fence in the 20th. In the interim, Kohli cut and thrust his way to 82 not out from 51 balls and his record in T20 Inter-nationals during chasing targets now reads like a cricket fiction: an aver-age of 122.83 in wins at a strike-rate of 131; an average of 91.80 in chas-es overall at a strike-rate of 132.65 and an average of 228.50 in chases in the ongoing World T20. If MS Dhoni is the finisher, then how are we to think of Virat Kohli? Kohli has said many times that having a target helps him

ny of featuring in a play-off round to even feature in another qualifying round of the 2019 Asian Cup. A win against Turk-menistan would put India against a lesser opposition in the play-off, thereby increasing their chance of making it to the qual-ifiers of the Asian Cup.India, who have just three points from their lone win

against Guam last year, are coming into tomor-row’s Joint Qualification Round 2 match following a 0-4 drubbing away at the hands of continental giants Iran last week.Though the wounds of the big defeat are still fresh, the team has been boosted by the return of Chhetri, who sweated it out on the field on the eve of the match.

The source also said that the coach was not happy with Shahid Afridi’s cap-taincy. “Waqar has also questioned the captaincy skills of Shahid Afridi and some of his deci-sions. In totality, the head coach is clearly not happy with the way the players have responded or shown improvement in their game.” The PCB chief has sent the report to the

fact-finding committee, which is formed to probe into the national team’s poor performance in the Asia Cup and World T20, as well as in earlier series against England and New Zealand. “Waqar has sub-mitted a complete report on his two-year tenure and the chairman has sent the report to the fact-find-ing committee for its ob-servations,” the source said.

New Delhi on Monday. “It is very bittersweet to be going back to South Afri-ca after the World T20. It was not where we wanted to be. We’ve only got our-selves to blame,” du Ples-sis was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “We played good cricket leading up to the tournament and we were consistent in the sub-continent, but a World T20 is a do-or-die tournament.

“If you make mistakes, it’s not like a series where you can come back into the se-ries. We made one or two mistakes against England and they punished us for it,” he said. “Against West Indies, we made one or two mistakes as well. The teams in a T20 world cup are so close to each other, if you’re not on top of your game, teams will punish you.

So we are going to have a very strong game tomorrow to beat New Zealand,” Morgan said. Morgan has the experi-ence of winning a World T20 back in 2010 when England beat Austra-lia in the final with Paul Collingwood in charge. Incidentally, Colling-wood is here with the England team as a con-sultant. “Certainly my ex-perience in the knock-out stages of a tournament is that you’ve done the hard work and it’s almost now you earn a licence to go out and express yourself as much as you can.

frame his innings. The chase seems to dissolve into a complex equation containing the number of runs required, the number of balls remaining, the strengths and weakness of opposing bowlers, the nature of the pitch, the placing of the fielders and the dimensions of the field. While at the crease, he is somehow able to work out how to keep the equation balanced as the situation ebbs and flows. On Sunday, he hit two boundaries from his first three balls to an-nounce himself. Then, for the next 37 balls, it was dots, singles and twos barring one four and one

six off Glenn Maxwell that was mistimed and yet timed well enough to clear long-off. And all this while, the equation kept changing; twisting this way and that until after the 17th over when India needed 39 from 18 balls with six wickets in hand. Now it was simpler, clearer, and Kohli went to work. A short delivery from Faulkner was pulled to deep mid-wicket for four. Expecting a full de-livery to follow, Kohli then carved the next ball behind point for another four. For an encore, Kohli simply stepped down the track and drove Faulkner over long-off for six.

The digitisation work is being done because there is always a risk of the re-cords on papers getting spoiled due to rains, in ac-cidental fire or by termites.

Police have arrested eight men including four gov-ernment employees for allegedly hacking into the Sales Tax department’s computer system to acti-vate ‘Taxpayer Identifica-tion Numbers’ of 14 de-funct companies so as to fraudulently withdraw Rs 11 crore in tax credit. TIN, an 11-digit number, is used by the manufacturers and wholesalers to get tax cred-it on VAT filed by com-panies. They use bills of materials supplied to com-panies to get tax refund. The city crime branch and the cyber crime sleuths carried out an investigation after a case was filed by the Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax Mahesh Patel on March 4. The accused, which included four em-ployees of the Sale Tax de-partment, tried to activate

defunct TINs of 14 com-panies using department’s computers on February 27 and February 28, when the department was closed for holidays. They planned to use these TINs to get tax credits on fake bills of sup-pliers to these companies. “When they activated the TINs, SMS was sent to the Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax which alerted him as only senior officials are allowed to process ac-tivation,” said Joint Com-missioner of Police (crime) J K Bhatt. Among the ar-rested persons, Balmukund Thakkar, owner of a Ra-jkot-based protein supple-ment company, was found to be the mastermind. Oth-er accused include Sales Tax department clerks Dahyabhai Parmar, Mehul Makampara, Ashok Detro-ja and Virendrasinh Parmar who allegedly provided login IDs and passwords.
