Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad Situated in the Saraspur area of Ahmedabad is the beauti- ful tomb of the 32nd spiri- tual leader of the Dawoodi Bohras, who was executed for heresy in 1648 on the orders of the then gover- nor of Gujarat, Aurang- zeb. The structure is made entirely of white marble, with gilded finials topping its five domes. Just a few feet from it, though, span- ning the road which runs in front of the structure, is a rather ugly brick wall. It is quite apparent that the wall has been constructed recently and in haste, its bare grey bricks and craggy cement fillings providing a jarring contrast to the se- rene whiteness of the tomb complex. The wall, built on April 17, represents the ful- filment of a five-year-old demand by the Dawoodi Bohras, a prosperous Shia Muslim sub-sect of traders, to take over a road which ran though their property, with religious structures on either side. This move has, however, inconve- nienced the residents of the area, who resorted to stone pelting to vent their anger last Friday. Sajjad Heera, officer on special duty to the Dawat Property Trust, a body which manages the tomb, said that the location of this road had caused sig- nificant difficulties to the visiting worshippers. “The area would get flooded since there was no govern- ment maintenance of the drains. Moreover, we have a mosque on one side and the tomb on the other side of the road. The heavy traffic on it was a hindrance to our visitors, who often needed to cross against heavy traf- fic,” explained Heera. As an alternative route to the now blocked road, the property trust has already constructed a new public road along its northern perimeter using its own land. “We have spent Rs 2.5 crore constructing this new road and laying the drainage. Moreover, the land area we’ve donat- ed for this detour is twice the area we’ve received,” Heera said. The tomb is sit- uated in a low-income area with shanties all around, the main population of which consists of Dalits. The locals here claim that cutting the road off has greatly incon- venienced them. Poonam- bhai, a resident of the area, said that the “new road tri- ples the time that it takes our children to get to school and it’s also unsafe for women at night since it’s quite de- serted”. “The Vohrajis have unfairly taken over a public road,” Poonambhai com- plained. “They are rich and have bought the road from the administration”. The act is approved by the govern- ment although Sajjad Heera dismisses any suggestion that road was bought. On April 16, Gujarat Chief Minster Anandiben Patel met the current leader of the Bohra sect, Mufaddal Saifuddin and approved the transfer of the road to the community. Within a day, a wall had been construct- ed and the road added as part of the tomb’s property. This comes in the backdrop of increasingly close ties between the ruling Bhara- tiya Janata Party and the Dawoodi Bohra commu- nity, after Narendra Mo- di’s victory in the General Elections of May 2014. The Bharatiya Janata Party has reciprocated these feelers. In January 2015, Modi tweet- ed a picture of him meeting Saifuddin. Later on, in April 2015, the Modi government even made moves to award the Padma Shri to the pre- vious leader of the com- munity, who had passed away recently. The Bohra community, however, de- clined to accept the award. This rapprochement comes after the 2002 Gujarat po- grom, where Bohra busi- nesses were badly affected and distrust of the Bharatiya Janata Party was high. The then Dai, however, started to work towards a change of attitude. Reasons for this move include pragma- tism on the part of a largely business community which cannot afford to antagonise any government as well as a genuine belief that Modi’s pro-business policies will help the mercantile Bohras. As- suring home buyers that he would stand by them, Gandhi said that it was due to lack of transpar- ency, the buyers were left in a quandary. “They are told that you will get the flat on a particular day but for years they don’t get the flat. They are told the super duper area of the flat would be so much but what is delivered is dif- ferent,” he said. He said that someone was prom- ised that the flat will have a good view, but a few months after the flat was delivered, another build- ing came up and the view was blocked. He said the government was trying to destroy the Bill which Congress led UPA had brought to regulate the real estate sector. “Main dilution is that there was clear transparency. Gabbar Is Back review by Anupama Chopra: Blasphemous rebranding

Vai Raja Vai Movie Review

Agency : New DelhiIn Vai Raja Vai, the lead actors are named after themselves. Gautham Karthik is Karthik, Pri-ya Anand is Priya and Sathish is Sathish. We don’t exactly understand why, but maybe Aish-waryaa felt it’s a lot eas-ier to connect with the characters if their names are already known to us. It does work to an ex-tent and these are also the most common mid-

dle class names in Tamil cinema. Karthik is born with the power to fore-see immediate events in his life. He comes out of his mother’s womb with a smile and it takes him two months to cry for the first time. His father, quite naturally excited at seeing his son cry, lifts him and seconds later, the ceiling fan comes crash-ing down on the cradle. It’s the first hint of the boy’s superhero power.

Is Rahul banking on perpetuat-ing poverty to revive Congress?

From being caught snoozing in parliament to spend-ing time in a mysterious hideout to the current pho-to-ops with tillers of the soil, Rahul Gandhi has been acquiring a whole range of political experience. The problem with his present frenetic pace, however, is the question that is bound to be asked: How long he can keep it up? Any slackening will provoke scep-tics to reiterate the charge against him of being a part-timer. But it isn’t only his penchant to swing from one extreme to another — from absenteeism as a parliamentarian to speaking almost on a daily basis — which will be queried as his present com-bative political line. While his leftist tilt is evident, what may well be awaited is the extent to which he moves in this direction, which is at odds with his party’s ‘neo-liberal’ economics of the last quarter of a century. Of equal interest will be whether Rahul will be given a free hand in this matter by his party or whether he will be reined in after some time. For instance, will the Congress allow the heir apparent to continue his present tirades against businessmen since this will mean alienating a highly influential sector? In addition, there is the question of electoral funds for which most parties are dependent on the corporate czars. Besides, it is not the Congress’ style to be so aggressively Leftist or Rightist. Tradition-ally, the 130-year-old party has followed the middle path. Indeed, its characteristic moderation has been its USP although the party always had both Left-ists and Rightists in its ranks — such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Vallabhbhai Patel or Indira Gandhi and Morarji Desai (before he left the Congress). For the present, Rahul’s main charge is that the Narendra Modi government is grabbing land from peasants to repay capitalists who allegedly bankrolled his election campaign. Such snide insinuations win applause at public meetings but the backroom boys of the Congress (and other parties) will be unhap-py about the fallout, especially during private in-teractions with the business community. There is another difficulty. In focusing on the agricultural sector, Rahul is venturing into a minefield where every point of argument has more than one coun-terpoint. Not surprisingly, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman slyly indicated that his party was waiting for the dauphin to slip up because of his simplistic approach to the subject and lack of in-tellectual ability. A hint that a gaffe is possible is available from the limited nature of Rahul’s ques-tion-and-answer sessions with media personnel where the only points which he makes are that the farmers are in distress and that an uncaring govern-ment is in the hands of capitalists. After that, it is ‘dhanyavad’ (thank you) and goodbye.

“The separatists are finding themselves to be irrelevant that is why they are raising such is-sues. People do not follow them and there were only a few hundred people at the rally. They have become irrelevant and they are doing this to seek the attention of general masses. They are trying to vitiate the atmosphere of J&K but they would not succeed in it,”

Why is Gab-bar on a killing spree? A tragic backstory involves a forgettable cameo by Kareena Kapoor Khan and an unintentionally comical shot of buildings collapsing. Writing about Nepal quake not for publicity: Amitabh Bachchan

Agency : MumbaiMegastar Amitabh Bach-chan is furious with some social media users who have accused him of trying to garner publicity by writ-ing about the victims of Nepal’s devastating earth-quake on networking plat-forms. This has infuriated Big B, and he took to his blog to post: “Some other in the other medium slith-er in the scum of incog-nito ed garbage, and wish to learn what I do in ca-pacity of help and care to

IPL - 8 : 2015SPORTS ROUNDUP

Ahmedabad

IPL 2015: For us, play-offs have already begun, says MI’s Ambati Rayudu

Agency : Mumbai Mumbai Indians notched up their first back-to-back wins this season with a eight-run victory over Rajasthan Royals but their batsman Ambati Rayudu conceded that his side will have to play each game as a must-win to make it to the play-off stage of the IPL cricket tournament. “Our play-off has already started, to be honest. We need to take each game as such and try to go that extra mile (in every game),” said Rayudu who scored an 53 while coming in

at number five to help Mumbai beat Rajasthan by eight runs here last night. Rayudu featured in a partnership of 61 runs in just 30 balls with West Indian Kieron Pol-lard to pull Mumbai out of a mid-innings rut and post a winning score of 187. Mumbai had started the tournament with four losses on the trot before arresting the trend and yesterday’s win was only their third in eight games and the second at the Wankhede Stadium this season. They stared at a defeat when Rajasthan

wicketkeeper Sanju Sam-son was blasting away to a fine 76 off 47 balls be-fore New Zealand pacer Mitchell McClenaghan dismissed him and Karun Nair off successive balls in the 18th over to tilt the balance in favour of the home side. “It was defi-nitely Samson the way he batted. It was a brilliant innings. I am happy that we ended up on the win-ning side,” Rayudu said at the post-match press conference when asked at which point Mumbai thought they had wrapped up the game.

Shaky Hyderabad Face-off Against the Table-toppers Super Kings

Agency :Hyderabad At the half-way mark of the IPL, Hyderabad have more lost games than they have won. Their middle-order have collapsed far too often and their bowling hasn’t lived up to the hype. Even the ‘dream pair’ of Dale Steyn and Trent Boult haven’t been able to spur the Sunrisers on. The biggest worry for the Sunrisers is their falter-

ing middle-order. None of the batsmen have put in a decent performance and the over-dependence on their openers, David Warner and Shikhar Dha-wan, has got them no-where in the tournament. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have been on the mark. They have won six out of their eight games and despite their loss against the Kolk-ata Knight Riders, MS

Dhoni’s men have looked formidable. The bowling has been spot on in most games and coupled with brilliant fielding, Super Kings have steam-rolled oppositions. The batting though, has a a couple of hiccups. Suresh Raina hasn’t been his usual self and Faf du Plessis haven’t had a decent dig till now. However, the biggest worry for Chennai is the injury to Ravichandran Ashwin. Pawan Negi is not as menacing as the Super Kings off-spinner and his absence means Super Kings losing con-trol during the middle overs. At the Rajiv Gand-hi International Stadium in Hyderabad, the home team need to get a move on to their campaign while the table-toppers would look to strengthen their perch at the top.

Nadal receives Spanish awardAgency : Madrid

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy awarded the Gold Medal for Mer-it to tennis star Rafael Nadal, who stated that “victory is accomplished through work”. The cer-emony was held at the Moncloa Palace here on Friday, which marked Labour Day, reports Efe. Nadal was one of the winners of this award, decided last June 13, but he could not pick it up at the ceremony in Novem-

ber because he was still recovering from his re-cent appendectomy op-eration. “It’s a real hon-our to receive this award that embodies the merits of working. Throughout my career, and since I was little I had a maxi-mum dedication to what I was doing. In everything I do I always try to give my best and certainly it has been one of the keys to my success,” said Na-dal. “I never imagined receiving such a medal.

I am grateful,” he added, hoping to overcome this period of ups and downs and be able to restore sta-bility and walk again in the path of victory.

Kotla wicket was tough to bat on: David Miller

Agency : New DelhiKings XI Punjab bats-man David Miller said it was “pretty tough” to bat on the Ferozeshah Kotla wicket as his side slumped to a nine-wick-et defeat against the Delhi Daredevils here. Miller top-scored with 42 but his side only

managed 118/8 in 20 overs, which the Dare-devils eased past in 13.5 overs on Friday. “It was pretty tough. The wick-et was a little bit up and down so it wasn’t easy. A lot of balls were keeping low and some were carrying and had a good bounce in it; so it

wasn’t easy,” “We didn’t do well in the first six overs. I don’t think the dismissals were reck-less shots at all. It was just one of those things; we just managed to get ourselves in trouble. The way it’s going at the moment, nothing quite went our way. It wasn’t too easy to bat out there but they made it look very easy.” Miller add-ed that it was not easy to cope with the pres-sure but was hopeful of a turnaround in Kings XI’s fortunes, who lie eighth and last in the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings.

India start HWL semis prepa-ration with Japan Test series

Agency : BhubaneswarWith the FIH Hockey World League Semifinal (Men) 2015 around the corner, India’s prepara-tion for the tournament will start with the first Test of the four-match series against Japan at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday. India would be

looking to keep up its momentum after having finished third at the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia last month. With a 24-mem-ber squad at his disposal, India’s chief coach Paul van Ass would look to try out new strategies and use new team com-

binations ahead of the Hockey World League Semifinal to be held in Antwerp, Belgium from June 20 to July 5. Going by the world rankings, India (9) will definitely start as favourites against 16th ranked Japan. But the hosts are not will-ing to take any chances and would look to utilize their full strength against the visitors. The last time these two teams met was in the 2013 AHF Asian Champions Trophy in Ja-pan, where India lost 1-2 against the hosts. India has recalled a few young players, such as forwards Lalit Upadhyay and Yu-vraj Walmiki and mid-fielder Pardeep Mor, in the team. Even though the two teams are miles apart in world rankings, In-dia’s chief coach Van Ass warned his wards against complacency. “In the present day international hockey, you cannot take any team lightly. Once The Netherlands team lost a match against Japan, just because they took them lightly and did not utilize their full strength,” Van Ass said on the eve of the series opener.

Bangladesh hold Pakistan to draw in 1st Test after Tamim Iqbal’s double ton

Agency : Khulna Tamim Iqbal scored a double century and Im-rul Kayes 150 in a record opening stand of 312 as Bangladesh overhauled a huge first innings deficit to force a draw with Paki-stan in the opening test at Khulna on Saturday. Ban-gladesh were 555 for six when the match conclud-ed after a rain-disrupted final day. The hosts, who trailed by 296 runs af-ter Pakistan’s mammoth first innings 628, will take huge confidence into the second test in Dhaka next week after rescuing

a draw from what had looked like an almost hopeless position just a day earlier. Tamim’s 206 was the highest score by a Bangladeshi batsman in test cricket while his stand with Imrul was the first triple century part-nership for the country in the longest form of

the game. The pair re-sumed on 273, trailing the visitors by 23 runs, and added 39 more runs before the stand was fi-nally broken when Imrul holed out in the deep off Zulfiqar Babar, one of seven bowlers Pakistan used as they tried to force a result. Tamim retained the aggression that had brought him such success on Friday and brought up his double century in some style, march-ing down the wicket and smashing Junaid Khan high and straight for his seventh six.

Yuki managed to break his higher-ranked rival in the opening set but lost his serve twice, while in the second set he did not

get any chance to break the Australian. Neverthe-less, it was a rewarding ef-fort for Yuki as he gained 35 points and is set to break into top-200 again. He also pocketed $3765 as prize money. “I worked hard and made changes to my game and it’s pay-ing off.
