The specific approach of the Parapsychological Counseling Office The Parapsychological Counseling Office at Freiburg was established by The Scientific Society for the Advancement of Parapsychology eV " (WGFP) in 01.01.1989. It should serve as a consulting and information service in the field of parapsychology. In the beginning the advice was mainly related to the topic "Youth occultism". Although this issue no longer plays a role in the mass media, educational work in schools is still one of the central tasks of the counseling center. Generally it is made to help people that have unusual experiences. The counseling center is cooperating with clinical psychologists, medical doctors, psychotherapists and psychiatric clinics but also with schools, colleges, universities and other training institutions from all over the country. Currently each year about 3500 consulting and information requests are processed. The team consists of 5 coworkers. The PCO is funded by the Government of Baden-Württemberg.

The counseling office offers information and advice

concerning Parapsychology in form of a social service, which works toward a professionally and scientifically well-grounded clearing-up of the more and more expanding esoteric market, the "life aids" and the alternative healing methods offered there. The education of the youth, who often deal uncritically with occultism and practices of magic, is a further focal point. In addition, other people who have made extraordinary, so called paranormal or spiritual experiences, and therefore look for a dialogue or other support, can seek help or advice at this counseling office. This institution is available not only for concerned persons, but also for schools, educational and other psychosocial

advisory boards.

My present view which I developed during the last 50 years of research and investigation in the field of parapsychology has led me to a somewhat clearer idea about the nature of paranormal phenomena. After having listened to literally thousands of persons who report paranormal experiences in our counseling project I have come to the conclusion that the “paranormal” is quite “normal”, but it is still tabooed by (western) society. There is nothing supernatural behind it; we need not assume interactions of spirits or disincarnate entities, nor do we need transcendental dimensions, but we must append a complementary holistic description of the world to our reductionistic world view. This means that both local and global observables are necessary to give a proper description of paranormal phenomena. I am quite sure, that if I had had no contact with the field of parapsychology, I would have come to the same conclusion in dwelling only on physics, psychology and system theory, where the MPI can also be applied without any reference to parapsychology, but I am sure that my progress of understanding would not have been that easy.

The Paranormal is Normal but Quite Different

An example is the experience that Hans Berger, the inventor of electroence- phalography (EEG), had in 1893, when he was a student of astronomy. The experience inspired him to study the interaction between mental phenomena and physiological processes. Riding a horse on the narrow edge of a steep ravine, Berger fell into the path of a mounted battery and came to lie al - most beneath the wheel of one of the horsedrawn guns. The battery came to a stop just in time, and he escaped injury. In the evening of the same day, Berger received a telegram from his father asking about his well-being, the only time in his life that he had received such a query. This inquiry resulted from Berger’s sister having told her parents that she knew for a fact her brother had been involved in an accident. Berger (1940) later wrote, “This is a case of spontaneous telepathy in which at a time of mortal danger, and as I contemplated certain death, I transmitted my thoughts, while my sister, who was particularly close to me, acted as the receiver”

Description of a strange experience in my apartment on 2/10/97. In front of my eyes the following happened: We sat in the living room, together with Karin. She had placed herself on the sofa and was fallen asleep . Our dog was lying on the foot of the sofa near Karin and slept. My husband and I watched TV and it was otherwise completely quiet in the room. Suddenly the dog drove into the air and clenched unnatural, flew through the living room, glanced off the cabinet wall, trying to come on the legs, first he failed, his whole body was shaking, but then it was all over and than he behaved as if nothing had happened. During all the time I made an observation on the table of living room. Karin's glasses lay on the TV magazine and I could not believe my eyes: When the glasses raised very slowly and declined slowly back to the newspaper. Karin went up briefly, the dog looked astonished in his comic movements, then the dog went to Karin and put her head on her lap .

In Generalized Quantum Theory, the fundamental notions of system, state and observable are taken over from ordinary quantum theory:

A system Σ is any part of reality in the most general sense, which can, at least in principle, be isolated from the rest of the world and be the object of an investigation.

Quantum endopysics refers to the ontic, quantum exophysics to the epistemic aspect of quantum theory. Endopysics has universal laws and describes what is supposed to be ojective real, that is, what exists independently of human knowledge. Exophysics is contextual, deals with sensations, observations and measurements which reflect the objective real. (H. Primas) Pseudo-signal are non-local correlations as they arise within an endo-description of the system. Internally, pseudo-signals appear to be deterministic "signals". Entanglement Disorder - a new Concept to describe Spontaneous "paranormal" experiences and other Complex Environmental Reactions

(CER) A systemic phenomenological model that assumes the movability of the Cartesian cut is proposed and elucidated by means of a single case study. The model assumes that a continuum from purely psychosomatic disorders to RSPK cases exists. The degree of externalization (locus of control) of the affected person serves as an ordering parameter for the loca/on of the Cartesian cut. It turns out that the dynamics of the disorder develops in four phases, like in the RSPK-model of the MPI. However, in contrast to the decline phase of the RSPK cases (because of the NT-axiom), CER cases lead to petrification of the complaints. A specific therapy approach was developed in the parapsychological counseling office, which is largely ideology-invariant and therefore it allows to incorporate personal belief systems (such as magical thinking) in a positive way. Persons concerned need not deny their "paranormal" experiences any more, but they can integrate them into the therapy process positively. Mainly it is a mtter of translating the system-structure paranormal and related normal psychological processes in the language of the persons in order to give them the opportunity to understand these processes from their point of view and finally, to be able to help themselves.

It can also be maintained that it is best to provide the machine with the best sense organs that money can buy, and then teach it to understand and speak English. That process could follow the normal teaching of a child. Things would be pointed out and named, etc. Again, I do not know what the right answer is, but I think both approaches should be tried. The shape of our body determines the experiences we can make with it at all. If you had another body, you would also perceive the world differently. Make the following thought experiment: what would happen if the so-called "human soul" were taken out of the human body and planted in a frog? Would you have the same view in the world? I would say, of course not! Because the eye or the brain of the frog are so differently built and so specifically adapted to the environment of this animal that the world of the frog and man differ significantly from each other. The dynamics of RSPK is described as the dynamics of pragmatic information within a hierarchically nested, organizationaly closed socio-psycho-physical system (labyrinth) , which is created by the persons involved (focus person, naïve and critical observers) and the reaction of the society.

How to stop RSPK - phenomena? No exorzism or ghosthunting! "Starving out" is a technique that avoids to give any attention to the RSPK-phenomena. "Tieing up" requires more action: It includes a perfect documentation of the RSPK-phenomena e.g. recording by a video-camera. Finding out the “message”: The problems of the focus person must be solved.

I believe that I can make the fortunate report that the poltergeist has vanished. My first assumption after our telephone-conversation was, that the house does not like me, and I do not like the house.... But since the phenomena did not disappear, I thought that this cannot be the problem, and beside this would have been a known problem. When I looked through my notes, I found that all objects which were destroyed had a relation to my mother. To explain this, I must say that my Mom and I have a very close relationship. With no other person I have ever experienced that the line was occupied, when I tried to phone her because she also tried to phone me..... The first poltergeist phenomena happend the night after Mother’s day this year, I was kicked by someone in the bed. In this moment I thought “Mom help me”. In the same night a vase on the table broke in four parts. It contained flowers for her. The photo that bounced against me, showed Mom’s dog, the fowerpots that fell down were from her and also the cupboard. The marble-table which broke when the bookshelf tilted, had also a relation to my mother. During these days we had enough time to talk to each other and my feeling that she was not well during the last months was confirmed. Last year she tried to suicide herself and she told me that she was desperate. She tried to move to us, but she saw no possibility to do this. Now, we try to find a home for her etc. ... I am rather shure that this was the solution, and if you ask now, why I did not find it earlier, I do not know, yet it was so obvious! I want to thank you very much, because without your help I never thought about this possibility.

Extraordinary experiences in its cultural and theore/cal context - Interes/ng Cases of the Parapsychological Counseling Office The growing complexity, opaqueness and specialization of many areas of life and – above all – a booming psychological and esoteric market create the necessity for counseling and advice for individuals who encounter so-called ‘paranormal’ experiences. These experiences are often interpreted as ‘transpersonal’ or ‘spiritual’, depending on the cultural background and religious traditions. The term ‘spiritual crisis’ has become a fashionable diagnosis with some transpersonal psychotherapists. Paranormal experiences, regardless of their acceptance of academic psychology and psychiatry, are s/ll a taboo subject in society. A large collection of cases in the form of letters, which were sent in by individuals wanting to communicate their unusual or extraordinary experiences have been analysed. Finally, we discuss a special form of ‘inexplicable experiences’ based on a theoretical model. Its recommendations seem counterintuitive but are ultimately successful. The model starts from a system-theoretical viewpoint and uses concepts such as complementarity and entanglement of generalized quantum theory (GQT) and the model of pragmatic information (MPI). Since it turned out that individuals who contact the counseling centre also offer their own interpretations and ‘explanation’, the question arises, how these resources can be used to help clients.
