I just wanted to let you know that I made it home. The journey wasn’t an easy one, but it didn’t take too long.

Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh and new I wish that you could close your eyes and that you could see it too.

Please try not to be sad for me. Try to understand God is taking care of me . . .

I’m in the shelter of His hands.

Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying and I’ll never hurt again.

Don’t grieve for me for now I am free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call.

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day, To smile, to love, to work, or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void, fill it with good memories at best.

But find peace in knowing that I am now at perfect rest. A friendship shared, a laugh, a hug, a kiss,

Oh, yes, these things, I, too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you all the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full, I’ve savored much. Good times, good friends, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time here seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts and share with me. God wanted me now,

Precious Memories Precious Memories

W hat rejoicing there must have been in Heaven on Friday evening, October 5, 2018, when Rosa Mae Flythe made her flight from earth below to dwell eternally with her Heavenly Father above. It was truly a blessing to share those precious years with such a humble and God-fearing woman. We are honored to take a moment and tell you about the life of an incredible mother and true soldier in the Army of the Lord. It’s a life to be celebrated and remembered as one filled with love and laughter. Rosa Mae Flythe was born on April 12, 1929 in Newsoms, VA, to the late Florence Faulkins Bland. She was reared by her maternal grandparents, the late Joe Cephus and Mary Faulkins . She was the widow of Jimmie Lewis Flythe, her childhood sweetheart. Rosa attended school in Southampton County. She retired from Portsmouth Paving Corporation after many years of service as a Housekeeper. While residing in Newsoms, Rosa joined in fellowship with the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Roger S. Steele. It was here that she began her dedication to serving the Lord. Rosa was a pillar of the community and touched many lives through her hard work as a Sunday School Teacher and leadership role during Vacation Bible School. After relocating to Portsmouth, VA in 1968, Rosa joined the New First Baptist Church of Taylorsville where the late Dr. T. Melvin Steele was Pastor. It was under Dr. Steele’s leadership that she began to grow even more spiritually and blossom as one of God’s children. Her dedication and commitment to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was evident through her affiliation with the various ministries in the church. Among these include attendance in Sunday School, Noon Day Prayer Service, Adult Bible Study, the Helping Hand Club, Open Door Club,

Widow’s Club, Women’s Ministry, and the Choir. Rosa was a praying women and a faithful and dedicated servant of the Lord. She loved her family at the New First Baptist Church Taylorsville. One of the many things Rosa loved to do was spend countless hours talking and praying with her family and friends about God’s goodness and his mercy. During her illness and transitioning, Rosa was still praising God. Despite her inability to speak, every now and then, she would attempt to utter a few words, as some of her favorite gospel hymns played softly in the back-ground. She was surrounded by family and friends that helped her to praise the Lord on her way home. Rosa Mae Flythe is survived by her six children; three daughters, Christine Moye, Rosa Helen Flythe, and Nancy R. Greene (Alphonso Greene), all of Virginia Beach and three sons, Jimmie A. Flythe and Melvin W. Flythe of Portsmouth, and David L. Flythe of Virginia Beach. Also left to cherish her memory are one niece and nephew of New York, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and a host of great-great-grandchildren, cousins, and friends. To God be the glory for her calming demeanor and maternal contributions that have truly been an asset to her family and our community.
