Kattenstudiedag 8 mei a.s. Het Kattengedragsadviesbureau organiseert op 8 mei een Kattenstudiedag in De Hilt in Eemnes (Nl.). De Kattenstudiedag biedt diepgaand inzicht in het gedrag van de kat. Er zijn twee docenten: de Belgische gedragsbioloog Els Peeters (gespecialiseerd in katten) en de Nederlandse kattengedragstherapeut Marcellina Stolting.

Programma 10.00-11.30 uur, Els Peeters: Wat is een kat eigenlijk? Aan de hand van de 'Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness' worden de eigenschappen van de kat besproken en de gevolgen hiervan voor de hedendaagse huiskat. 11.45-12.45 uur, Marcellina Stolting: Huisvesting voor de kat. Welke eisen stelt een kat eigenlijk aan zijn leefomgeving? Wat zijn de voor- en nadelen voor de kat om buiten- of binnenkat te zijn? De houten tafel heeft ze op maat laten maken.

Verdeeld over twee bloempotten staan vijf verschillende plantjes die katten aantrekkelijk vinden, waaronder kattenkruid. Die kokosmat ligt er omdat ze graag aan krabben.

Het babybadje bevat een klein laagje water in om ze te laten wennen. Als ze daaraan gewend zijn kan het badje lekker voor ze gevuld worden. (Sommige katten zijn dol op badderen, maar alleen als ze zelf kunnen bepalen of ze het doen!). Het spreekt voor zich dat er een kattenluikje is zodat de katten zelf kunnen bepalen wanneer ze naar buiten gaan De buitenruimte is veilig afgezet met een kattennet. Een roofvogelnet is hiervoor ook geschikt. Natuurlijk is het katvriendelijke balkon pas compleet met een klimmeubel.

Welke voedingsmiddelen zijn ongezond voor kat en hond?

Kattenhotel Op een prachtige zonnige middag kwam Marcellina via een klant langs bij kattenhotel Spinnendeweelde. Ze was niet de eerste kritische bezoekster. De eigenares van dit hotel heeft ervaring opgedaan in het asiel en bovendien heeft het echtpaar goed nagedacht over de inrichting van hun kleine kattenhotel. Ze willen het ook klein houden. Geen reclame voor kattenshow…. De foto werd ons toegestuurd zonder dat de maker ervan bekend was. We zouden de maker van deze foto graag willen bedanken voor diens grappige kijk op detail.

Donorcodicil voor dieren

Overleden huisdieren worden, via een donorcodicil met toestemming van de eigenaar, ingezet voor practica binnen de Universiteit Utrecht. Deze samenwerking tussen Proefdiervrij en de Universiteit Utrecht draagt bij aan het vervangen van proefdieren. Voor studies als (dier)geneeskunde, biologie en tandheelkunde bieden

universiteiten practica op proefdieren aan. Dit ter illustratie van de lesstof en ook om studenten de vaardigheden van bijvoorbeeld opereren en hechten te laten oefenen. Met de invoering van het huisdierdonorcodicil is het bij practica voor de opleiding diergeneeskunde niet langer nodig proefdieren speciaal te fokken en te doden. „Met het huisdierdonorcodicil kunnen nu al honderden proefdieren worden gered. Dit aantal zal alleen maar toenemen‟, aldus Anouk Janssens van Proefdiervrij. De faculteit Diergeneeskunde van de Universiteit Utrecht is de eerste opleiding in Nederland die werkt met het Huisdierdonorcodicil. Overleden huisdieren zoals honden, katten, konijnen en cavia‟s worden met toestemming van de eigenaar beschikbaar gesteld voor onderwijsdoeleinden.

Science cafe bomvol bij lezing Marcellina Stolting

Een leuk verhaal werd ingestuurd door Carin. “Een van mijn buren werkt in Hilversum en wist dat je kwam spreken in het Cafe. Ze zat in de trein naar haar werk en onderweg waren er jongens aan het kletsen over de avond (waar ze geweest waren). Zo vertelden: “… eerst dacht ik, zal ik wel gaan… is het wel leuk”. Maar ze vonden het echt te gek jouw verhaal in het cafe en lieten zich heel enthousiast erover uit. Nou over telepathie gesproken…. een buuf van mij die dit in de trein hoort:) Ze stapten in Leiden uit en noemden ook jouw naam dus dat is echt over afgelopen maaandag geweest! Dit wilde ik je niet onthouden, je bent blijkbaar het gesprek van de dag in de trein. “

Raambeveiliging

Om te voorkomen dat uw kat uit het raam valt, kunt u stevig gaas voor het raam bevestigen of een muggenhor. Speciaal voor raamkieren aan de onderkant is er http://www.trixie.de/tr/newLayout/index.html. Waar het in Nederland te koop is, is ons niet bekend. (Adressen zijn welkom).

Voor raamkieren aan de bovenkant hebben we een eveneens Duits merk gevonden: Bernina. Er zijn katten die zichzelf per ongeluk wurgen in de kiertjes van kiepramen. Dit kunt u eenvoudig voorkomen door gebruik te maken van deze beveiligingen. Wellicht kunnen we u de volgende nieuwsbrief melden waar in Nederland en België u dit product kunt aanschaffen. We hopen u dan adressen van echte winkels en webwinkels te kunnen melden. Suggesties over verkoopadressen en over kattenbeveiliging van Velux-ramen zijn welkom.

28 mei dierenmarkt Papendrecht Op deze vrijdag wordt er een gratis consultgesprek uitgedeeld door dierenspeciaalzaak De Lange. U kunt met vragen aan de honden- of kattengedragsdeskundige een afspraak maken bij de deze winkel. Het Kattengedragsadviesbureau is op uitnodiging aanwezig om u voor te lichten. De dierenmarkt vindt zowel binnen als buiten plaats. Er zal ook een dierenfotograaf aanwezig zijn. Verder vindt u er Europet met honden- en kattenbenodigdheden, Royal Canin met superaanbiedingen, een grabbelton met kattenspeelgoed, een gratis gezondheidscheck bij hond, kat, knaagdier (gratis nagels knippen, gebitscontrole, huid/vachtconditie e.d). Cadeau artikelen met dierenprints en nog veel meer! Het evenement gebeurt in combinatie met ''dordt in stoom'. De veerpont tussen Papendrecht en Dordrecht is dat weekend gratis. Engelstalig gedeelte

Getting a Second Cat to Manage Playful Aggression? Play in cats involves elements of predatory behavior - stalking, chasing, pouncing, hit-and-run biting and scratching. While the behaviors may be cute when directed towards inanimate objects such as toys, socks, or hanging objects they quickly looses their appeal when directed at us. Bare feet crossing a floor or a hand moved to pick something up often become the targets. Some cats don't know how to control the intensity of their attacks, so while this behavior isn't intended to be harmful any injuries from play- motivated aggression are no less real.

Among the best ways to change the behavior we recommend is to redirect the play to toys such as feathers on a string, crumpled paper balls or other moving toys. If you see the attack coming and roll the ball or dangle the feather before the cat leaps on you, this is the ideal sequence. For a time, this will likely mean you'll have to carry a small cat toy in your pocket, as you won't be able to go find one in time. We don't recommend ANY kind of physical punishment such as hitting, slapping, or scruff- shaking. This is likely to damage a potentially good relationship by causing the cat to escalate to defensive aggression, or at the least suppress all interactive play with people. What about acquiring another cat as a playmate? That could be a good idea for the people who had adopted a kitten from a local shelter. The kitten could start playfully attacking them. The kitten soon will stop attacking when showed no reaction to the play attacks. But when they react strongly to the attacks by yelling, swatting at the kitten and trying to get away from him. His play attacks would escalate, to the point that the kitten would lie in wait for them on top of the armoire in the bedroom. When they walk by, he would jump on their shoulders, bite and run. They could have had some success, with behavior modification and management (f.e. blocking access to the top of the armoire) but they also felt their kitten needed more play opportunities than they, as a working couple, could give him. So, when we suggested another cat. they were finally convinced and they picked out another young cat from the shelter. Within a week of bringing home this female kitten, the attacks stopped and the cats played with each other almost non-stop. The second-cat strategy should be done with much forethought and care. Owners must be really committed to having two cats for the rest of their (cats') lives. There should be some indication that the resident cat could get along with a newcomer, or at least no information that suggests differently. Finally, owners considering this approach need to do a very careful introduction between the cats to maximize the chances they will get along. If things go badly, the owners could have two cats fighting in addition to the play attacks on people. Not a good scenario. Our advice is to take two kittens from the same litter.

Pilling Cats: What is the Best Way?

It is well known that retention of the tablets or capsules of certain drugs (e.g., doxycycline, clindamycin) in the esophagus of the cat can cause inflammation and stricture formation. Current recommendations are that cats should never be given medication "dry", but any pill or capsule should be followed with a food treat or a bolus of water. This study was designed to evaluate the esophageal transit time of tablets and capsules when administered with either the FlavoRx pill glide or Greenies Pill Pockets. The FlavoRx pill glide is a one-step system that delivers the medication and a 3 ml fluid bolus at the same time. Four different medications were evaluated on different days in eight healthy cats. The estimated average esophageal transit time ranged from 16 seconds to 26 seconds. The researchers conclude that both the FlavoRx pill glide and Pill Pockets provide acceptable transit time into the stomach. Tritrichomonas in Cats in Italy Tritrichomonus foetus is protozoan parasite causing diarrhea in cats. Clinical signs are those of large bowel diarrhea, and include increased frequency of defecation, semi-formed to liquid feces, foul-smelling feces with fresh blood and mucus, and fecal incontinence. Affected cats are typically well otherwise. There are various methods of diagnosing T. foetus infection in cats, such as PCR on feces and fecal culture. Most reports of T. foetus infection in cats have come from the U.S., but there are a few reports from other countries, such as the U.K. and Germany. In this report, fecal samples from 74 cats with chronic large bowel diarrhea living in a rescue colony in Tuscany were submitted for T. foetusdiagnostics. Most were rescued street cats, but some were surrendered by owners. Of the 74 cats, almost 1/3 were found to be infected with T. foetus. The infected cats were predominantly over a year of age and were all neutered non-pedigreed, domestic cats. The investigators conclude that the prevalence of T. foetusmay be more widely distributed than previously thought. Holliday, M., D. Deni, and D.A. Pathogenesis of Feline Coronavirus Infection The importance of feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) as a primary intestinal pathogen is considered minimal. The importance of FECV is that this virus can mutate in vivo. At least one mutant form causes the highly fatal disease called feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Initially, this study had been designed to demonstrate that resistance and susceptibility to FECV infection were under genetic control, just as genetics appear to play a significant role in FIP resistance. With more than 3 years of study results, it became apparent that genetics

would not readily define this initial goal. The investigators made a decision to concentrate their efforts on what was learned about FECV pathogenesis. A distinct primary stage of infection was identified that lasted from 7 to 18 months, with the highest level of virus shedding during this phase. This primary stage resolved in one of the three following ways: 1) recovery, 2) persistent shedding, or 3) recurrent or intermittent shedding. During the primary phase, shedding levels were significantly higher in kittens than in adult cats. As kittens might be infected before their immune systems mature, FECV replication would be more frequent and increase the potential for FECV to FIP mutations. FIP is known to be more common in kittens than adult cats. The investigators also looked at the role of stress on reactivating latent or subclinical infection, or increasing virus shedding. They evaluated the role natural stress such as pregnancy, parturition, and lactation might play. Stress was also simulated by giving a series of corticosteroid injections using methylprednisolone acetate. No increase in virus shedding was reported in any of the scenarios. Virus shedding and serum antibody titers had a significant relationship to each other. Cats shedding virus usually had titers of 1:100 or higher. Cats that were not shedding virus usually had titers of 1:25 and lower. Additional observations on immunity to FECV infection found that immunity during the primary phase of infection was slow to develop, intermittent, and tenuous in duration. Immunity during re-infection tended to mirror that occurring during primary infection, indicating this immunity lacks memory.
