    January, 1970Dear C h r i s t i a n F r i e n d s ,

    The painters and e l e c t r i c i a n s are f i n a l l y outof t h e house, though we would welcome a c a r p e n t e rto f i n i s h the ki tchen cupboards as Phyl l is i s shortspace t o put dishes and pans, so we are able t o geton with the work with l e s s i n t er ru p ti o n s . I havebeen working a t the r e p r i n t i n g of the Zulu languagel e s s o n b o o k l e t and as soon as it i s out o f the way,w i l l s t a r t immediately on the Afrikaans, and Vendabooks. Some t r a c t s are also being slipped in betweenbooks as they do not take very long to complete,being s ingle sheets and not books that have to bebound and assembled. We do not yet have the p a r t i t i o nfor the dark room completed, but i t i s usable as long as our near neighbour doesnot have her two porch l ights swi tched on. I could put up a heavy curtain againstthem i f necessary. So far , I have used i t only for the photocopier, but I must

soon make \ise of it f o r normal pho togr aphy a s w e l l .We are happy to be able to report that one of our young men from the TulisaPark work, Freddie Enslin, a student at the Maranatha Bib le College, was baptizedby myself on th e 21st of this month. Freddie has been hav ing a t e r r i f i c

    struggle wit h t emp ta tion j u s t now and we earnest ly ask your prayers by name f o rhim. Both h i s f a t h e r and aunt are a l c o h o l i c and he h as , b efo re becoming aChris t ian , been involved i n nearly every imaginable s i n . Brother Wally Famam, oneof h is te ac he rs, has been a big help to Freddy in bringing him to a b e t t e r understanding of God's w i l l f o r him. His aunt recent ly resigned as th e church t r e a s u r e r ,a decision that I am not going to c on te st, and also announced that she was nolonger going to attend because another brother was a hypocri te , I think t h i s w i l lbe worked out in time, at l e a s t , 1 pray so. We may change the place of meeting asthis i s one of the problems.

    The Beit S t r e e t work seems to be doing wel l a t the moment. Their Christmasprogram was very wel l attended by an overf lowing crowd. We decided t o have aChristmas Day service, and t h i s was also t o an almost f u l l house. We had v i s i t o r sfrom n e a r l y a l l of the o t h e r Churches of C h r i s t in the a r e a as none of them werehaving services. Some came about f i f t y miles to at tend. The Tulisa Park congregationhas a delegation at the evening services there every Sunday now, and sometimesalmost the e n t i r e congregation at tends. I appreciate t h e i r cooperation, though i tmeans t h a t I can never r e l a x and repea t the morning sermon i n the o t h e r church.Perhaps t h a t i s as w e l l .

    We a re p repa ring i n v i t a t i o n s for c i r c u l a t i o n in the Tulisa Park, South Crestareas fo r a Thursday evening Christ ian Bible Fellowship meeting in our home. Wehope that we will be able to attract the interest of a few of . these people in this

area. It may only attract present members of the church, but, we hope to be ableto in teres t some of our neighbours and pave the way for teaching them* We havetwo or three neighbours who would probably resis t formal services as they havechurch contacts already, but they might be interested in something such as this. Our very best wishes toward you al l in this holiday season. May, 1970Dear Christ ian Friends,

Last month's new record figures were well enough laidto rest this month when the demand for the correspondence lessons took another leap. We distributed, not ahundred more books than l a s t month, but 150! One hundredand t h i r t y one cer t i f icates were issued, and two dozenstudents asked for follow-up contact with a church tobe made. We praise God for His wonderful blessing of thew o r k .

Brother Pete Jones is planning a v i s i t to Natal thismonth, and as he offered to contact any of our studentsalong the way that were asking fo r follow up, we gavehim about 25 names and addresses Nearly twenty of thesewere prisoners a t Utrecht , Nata l. We shall be anxious tohear the results of his t r ip when he returns.I had personally expected a leveling off in th e nunfcer ofpeople requesting correspondence lessons by this time, but again we set a new record. We went way over 15 hundred.Several of our friends have started to give well meaningadvice that we must slow down and take a holiday, and thelike, but what can we do other, than work on when the people continue to write in forcorrespondence studies to help them learn the Lord's will for them? I t is not at allunusual^ for my office day to stretch up to twelve hours or m9re at a time, in orderto be ^bte to get the mail outy to mark: papers and record the results, Tnd~^to^^epmaterials printed up for distribution. The^use up massive quanities of material thesedays. Preparation of new translations is virtually impossible these days as there isno time. Our very definite prayer need at the moment is that He will provide theclerical staff needed to handle the work at hand. We know that He both can and will.

One rude shock came to us this month, when the postage for printed matter was verysharply increased, almost without warning. We had been paying Ij cents per item, nowi t is to be 2j cents each. It is now an odd fact that we can mail our news letter to^you in America cheaper than we can mail it next door, should we want to. This willmake a dragri^ rhaTipo ^Mgeting, but there is nothing we can do about it .Our friend Mr Meyer of Ermelo, is rapidly recovering from his serious illnessand hopes to be baptized soon. He has written me to ask a number of questions abouthis African work and for the dates of conference, etc. Conference seems to have beenmoved to Capetown now, and I am planning to fly down. It will be very costly, but Isiiiq)ly can not spare the time to drive, nor do I feel up to the trip. I would plan onthree days each direction if I were to drive and i t would take up to two weeks withconference as well. Two weeks away from the office would mean an accumulation of upto e igh t hundred l e t t e r s Iinteresting figure which comes out of our recent records, is that we have nowprinted enough correspondence lesson books so that one in every thousand people ofSouth Africa could have had one personally, and enough tracts that there are threefor every ten people. At the present rate of distribution, by the end of this termwe will have passed the mark of one book for each 500 people. We nowhave nearly 20.000 addresses on f i l e .

    85,000Dear Christ ian Friends,

    August/September- ' n i l

We found it necessary to skip l a s t month's newsl e t t e r . The f i r s t reason could probably onlyhappen outsid e o f America. The factory ran outo f envelopes b u t r e t a i n e d our o rd er w ith thepromise to f i l l i t next week when they made thatsize again. They kept us dangling nearly a monthwhile the work piled up on us. We eventually founda substitute envelope for the lessons so we could do them, but i t was too late todo anything about the news l e t t e r by that time. Secondly, there was jus t no time.In fact there i s no time yet, really. You wil l notice a phenominal leap in demandfor lessons, ali jug-with^a similar^ leap-in^booksto be-markedr-and-eertif icates s e n t .At the same time, there is also a greatly increased printing schedule. We printeda thousand English lesson books a month ago, for example, and they are already goneand must urgently be re-printed. Preparation of newly translated books i s a t a

complete s t a n d s t i l l even though we have t rans la t ions on hand. Much time i s needed toset up this material in boojc form for the camera, and we just do not have i t thesedays. We find we can barely cope with the daily mail load. Please pray for us thatthe Lord will send secretarial help now. This is an urgent need. Phyllis and I cannot hope to cope with two thousand new applicants and the resulting other increasesvery long without health problems. The recent i l lness and hospitalization of one ofoiir co-missionaries, has pointed this out. My present working day ranges from 7:00a.m. unti l nearly 9:00 p.m. most days, plus a heavy week end schedule with twosmall congregat ions.Any Chris tian ladies wishing to consider this work for the Lord, may contact us byairmail, l ist ing age, qualifications, and experience, and enclosing a let ter ofChristian recommendation from the minister and elders of their home congregation inthe f i r s t let ter . As considerable typing is involved, we would appreciate i t i f thel e t t e r is personally typed. Experienced secretarial help in South Africa is scarceand demands about $300 a month salary. We suggest that applicants, unless financiallyindependent, ask this amount as Living Link salary plus about $600. for air t ickets.Kathryn and Ruth finished the ir Secretarial Train ing here l a s t month and workedvery hard in th e office during the few days they had before they l e f t for Americaand Bib le Col lege . They have written of t h e i r safe a r r i v a l in St Louis and have nowstarted school again. We pray for them, especially, that they will find employmentin order to pay their board at school and for next term's fees altogether, as we haveused our personal savings to cope with the first term costs. They will be happy to hfrom any of you a t the school.

We were delighted this month to be able to baptize brother Edwin Engelbrecht, one of our promising young men in the local Tulisa Park work. Edwin is verytalented musically and is a great help in many ways. We are starting a classof leadership training this week and hope that he will be one of those takingpart. He is busy too, however, as he is starting college this week as wellin classes connected with his diesel mechanics apprenticeship, so it will notbe easy for him.I made a trip to the north of the country to attempt to follow up some of ourmany students up that way and to arrange for their baptism, since we have no^urches whatever up there in the hundreds of square miles north of Pretoria. This IS to be the homeland area of many tribes and we passed huge cities ofpeople, but all of them inaccessible to me as they were African areas. I hadHo w ' European towns to meet me. We found most could noto this, but one man did come about twenty miles in, and he was prepared forenquiry and searching for water in this drought stricken

We knew you would be interested in a summary of the minutereport for the full year, so we have enclosed the blue cardwhich gives this suimary along with some over-all figuresas compared with this year's South African Census reports.I t is impossible ta really appreciate fourteen thousandbooklets unless you have personally had a hand in printing, assembling, finishing, and finally addressing and mailingthem out. Even nineteen hundred certificates does not meanmuch unless you have personally checked and marked eachbooklet first. It is this first hand knowledge which urgesus to ask. Please, pray for us that God willsend help for the office." We need atleast two ladiesfull time in order to fully serve the demand, if indeed, that willbe enough. Next year, we expect these figures to be more than twice this year's, andwe pray that we shall have a number of preaching points in outlying areas where theAfrican people are being concentrated, the Lord providing.

We urgently need funds as well as workers as costs are constantly rising. Postagealone now requires nearly a third of the present working budget, and some of ourequipment absolutely must be replaced immediately, while new items must be purchasedbecause of larger volumes of work at hand. The stapling of several thousand books amonth has completely worn out our sturdy stapler, and a replacement strong enough forthe work will cost $125. We can not operate without it. Acollating machine is alsonow virtually a must.As necessity is the mother of invention, I am working on anelectrically powered "lazy Susan" arrangement to fill the gap. I have not even seenwhat we really need here at any price, let alone one we can afford. This was conference month again, and, while I was away the few days, ! flew to" saveprecious time, since conference was in Cape Town nearly a thousand miles away, the wonaturally slipped behind. I have printed two books since I returned and mountains oftracts, but a third book has been out of print some days and I have a stockpile ofenvelopes waiting its re-printing , four more are all well below a hundred copieseach. In fact one good day's mail could deplete the supply of at least two of them. The tract rack still looks like a toothless ten year old.I really enjoyed conference this year. It was the first year 1 have been there thatI did not have a sermon to deliver, but this year more emphasis was placed on classesand workshops and these required less teachers. Since I had not expected to be therethe full time, I was not asked to take anything other than the treasure's work. I wasrelieved to have the treasurer's report accepted without any hesitation whatever. There was not even one question. My biggest problem was the offering money, some ofwhich was taken in during the last day in silver and which had to be brought back to

Johannesburg for banking since i t was too late to find a bank open. I carried i tin my luggage, but i t looked for a while l ike I might be boarding the plane witha large bag of silver on my lap. I solved this by paying all accounts in silverand copper. Brother Zimnerman had the problem thenlKathy and Ruth are busy with thei r work a t St Louis Christian College, though i tappears now that because of homesickness, a serious shortage of funds, and ourneed for her in the off ice immediately, we may be bringing Ruth back af ter the Christmholidays. She will work a while and will help us in the office, then la ter when i tis possible, we hope to be able to send her to th e new Bible College in Salisbury,Rhodesia. There she will have no problem finding work and we feel that the Lordwill lead her friend, Edwin, also to enroll . By that time he will have completedhis apprenticeship and be able to leave Johannesburg.

Dear Fr iends in Ch ri st J es us ,

    i97i

The Christ ian Service Camp season, Christmas season, and News Years are a l l now over here in South Afr i ca .Have we been busy! Phyllis taught in the J r . Camp alongIllinois with Mrs Harrington, which meant that a l l my office helperswere fully occupied elsewhere. I got badly behind thatweek. During Christmas we stayed behind, and i^ was onlyduring Sr. Camp week, when we were not teaching, that we managed to catch up again.Ruth returned to South Africa a t the end of Deceinber, jus t~in t ime-to go to campwith the Sr. Campers. She was really thrilled to be chosen as girl camper of theweek. In all , we had eleven young people from Tulisa Park in camp during one ofthe two weeks and they are a ll eagerly looking forward to another year the Lordwil l ing .It appears now that Ruth will not be going to Salisbury to Bible College this termas we had planned oweing to their not sending any information about the school tous. We can hardly send her unless we know a few things at least. Instead she willseek a job locally and save money for next year and will give me valuable help inthe off ice un t i l Miss Thomas can arr ive l a t e r in the year to take over that work.Ruth has already spent some time at th e typewriter.During this year, we sent out more than 19,000 lesson books with tracts. At thepresent growth rate, we estimate that we will probably distribute more than 35,000next year, the Lord willing. With this rapid growth and the sp ir al ing cost s, we havehad to do a great deal of "comer cutting" to balance the budget. We ask your continueprayer in this respect. We have also been forced to add brother Simon Mtshayisa, thelocal African Minister , to the s taf f on a half time daily basis. I do not know howwe ever managed to get along without him. He has been kept fully busy assembling thebooks as fast as I print them. So far, he has not come even remotely near to catchingup with the press. Some of the young Chinese Christ ian ladies have also lent a handwith the typing. I have given them the slips requesting tracts in bulk and envelopeswhile Mrs Harrington usually takes l i s ts of addresses and envelopes so that she cantype the addresses for new students. Phyllis opens the mail and does the l i s ts , whileRuth will be doing the layout of the new material for p rin ti ng once she is back intopractice with the typewriter. My job is the printing and the marking of books, etc.
