    LOBO FOOTBALL COACH LOCKSLEY

    By Greg Archuleta

    Journal Staff Writer

    Mike Locksley is anexperienced risk-taker.

But one coldnight in 2003, Locksleysprang up from his bed. Onlyhours earlier, the hot-shot col-lege football recruiting coor-dinator accepted a new job,and he now was in a second-guessing frenzy.

Locksley was about touproot his family again. The Washington D.C. nativewas leaving his back yard atthe University of Maryland, which had just finished an11-3 season in 2002 that result-ed in a No. 13 national rank-ing. He was taking the samejob at Florida, a place withwhich he was unfamiliar.

For less money.Locksley was terrified hed

made a mistake. And this is aman who doesnt scare easily.

Having grown up in D.C.snightmarish southeast sec-tion in the early 1980s, Lock-

sleys been a tough guy mostof his life.

Had to be. Its probably theonly way you can survivewatching several of yourfriends shot and killed on theinner-city streets or going toprison because of drugs.

And now, hes apprehen-sive? Over football?

This was di fferent. Lock-sleys decisions no longeraffected just him. He wasmarried with four children.

Man, I was nervous,Locksley recalls of that night.I kept saying, I cant do this,I cant do this.

In fact, he undid his deci-sion. Locksley called Gatorscoach Ron Zook the nextmorning and backed out.Thats when Locksleys voiceof reason intervened.

I was at home and my wifecame up to me and basicallycalled me out, Locksley saidof his wife, Kia. She said,Youve never been afraid ofanything in your life. Youneed to do whats best foryour career.

The word, afraid, hung inthe air. Hearing it shook up

Locksley. He got on the phone, called Zook right back and re-accepted the position.

He had to take a leap offaith, Kia says.

It was that same penchantfor calculated risk six yearslater that brought Locksley tothe University of New Mexicoas its 29th head football coach his wife playing an integralrole in that decision as well.

The man, who believeshe has one shot at being ahead coach, chose to lead aprogram that hasnt won aconference championship in

    45 years.Talk about a scary

    proposition.

I think for Mike, he has achance to come in and reallyput his mark on a program, mold it and shape it in hisown name, Kia says. Werehere because he was affordedthat opportunity here.

Likewise, UNM athleticsdirector Paul Krebs put him-self out on a limb in hiring afirst-time head coach. Krebs

says he heeded the words ofoutgoing Lobo coach Rocky

Long, who said the Lobosneeded a miracle worker.

Whether Locksley is thatcoach is pure conjectureat this point. What is fact:Locksley never has beenfired in almost two decadesas a football coach, beingretained twice during coach-ing changes.

    Better flavor:orange or cherry?

Opportunities for blackhead coaches in the DivisionI-A ranks are slim.

Only seven of the 120 Divi-

    sion I-A head coaches areblack.

Being a minority, I wasprobably just going to get oneshot at being a head coach, unless I was successful,Locksley says.

That he felt UNM was theplace he could have successspeaks to his belief in the uni-versity. Had Locksley waitedtwo more days, he mightvebeen running the show atSyracuse.

tor when Locksley played. Bol was a7-foot-7, 225-pound and rail-thin NBAplayer from 1985-1994.

Locksley also became a father hisfreshman year, his then-girlfriendCheryl Hansberry giving birth toMike Jr. (Locksley clarifies hes notJunior because he and his fatherhave different middle names).

Mike then was a senior when he metKia on her first day of school at a fresh-man orientation barbecue. Kia says she

resisted Mikes charms for all of a weekbefore agreeing to a date. The two havebeen together ever since.

By the end of that year, Locksley

was a team captain and earnedteam defensive most valuable playerhonors. Before he graduated, Mikebecame a father for the second time.Locksley says that his early experi-ences have helped him become a

better guide and adviser to his ownplayers.

One of the benefits of my back-ground, he says, is theres very fewthings that a player can come in, sit inmy office and say to me that I haventexperienced, seen or done.

    On the fast track

A short time after he completed hissenior year on the football team, atage 22, Locksley got a full-time assis-tant job coaching defensive backs andspecial teams for Combs, who wasnow the Towson head coach.

He had a great football IQ, saysCombs, now an assistant at Johns

Hopkins. And you could tell he had atremendous personality. As a player,he got along with every player onthe team, from every walk of life. Ithink thats why hes a tremendousrecruiter. He can relate to all societiesof people.

Locksley picked up things fromevery coaching stop that hes incorpo-rated into his own style.

Under Chuck Shelton at Pacific,Locksley first heard the mantra,Work for the job you have, not theone you want.

Ron Vanderlinden at Maryland, coined the phrase, I want to take kidswhere they cant take themselves aca-

demically, athletically and socially.Locksley credits Ralph Friedgen,

who succeeded Vanderlinden, for rais-ing his football IQ exponentially.

e University of New Mexicoall team heads into the 2009n with a theme that a comicsuper villain would love.

dle me this, riddle me that.while youre at it, riddle mether, too.e Lobos have so many ques-

heading into the 2009 sea-hat its nearly impossible to

w how much success they canunder first-year coach Mikesley.ich is why Mountain Westerence media pegged UNMnth in their preseason pollthe summer the lowestobos have been projected inyears.

cksley changed every facet ofrogram in replacing longtime

Rocky Long. Offensively,M has changed from a ball-

rol, ground-oriented attackned to eat up the clock anden the game to a no-huddle,mpo spread attack designed

    reate chaos for opposingnses.

the other side of the ball, obos have turned in Longsue 3-3-5 design that empha-controlled chaos in favor of

a more traditional 4-3 scheme thatfocuses on proper fundamentals, players responsible for holdingtheir respective positions andlimiting the big play.

UNM also will rely on as many

as 17 redshirts or true freshmento help facilitate those changes show as much youth as any timeduring Longs era.

Whether the Lobos currentplayers can adapt to considerablydifferent schemes will start to beanswered this weekend in Col-lege Station, Texas, against TexasA&M.

The following players will bekey in helping UNM make a suc-cessful transition.

DONOVAN PORTERIE: The 6-foot-3, 206-pound senior quarterbackhas started 22 games during thepast three seasons, but he is com-

ing back from offseason knee sur-gery that wiped out the final eightgames of the 2008 season.

Porterie, whose hometown ofPort Arthur, Texas, is less than200 miles east of College Station, also is learning his fourth offen-sive scheme in five years.

However, he did have a 3,000-yard passing season in 2007 underthen first-year coordinator DaveBaldwin.

ROLAND BRUNO: The senior widereceiver from Beaumont, Texas(150 miles from College Station),has excelled during fall camp andbeen the most consistent pass-catcher.

The shifty 5-10, 168-poundBruno is a good fit for the spreadoption, that tries to get the footballto its playmakers in space. A for-mer walk-on, Bruno has 45 careerreceptions for 428 yards.

DEMOND DENNIS: Talk aboutshifty, with speed. The 5-9196-pound true freshman fromAtlanta stepped onto the field forfall camp and started runningaway ... from every Lobo defenderduring every practice.

Dennis was a Class 3A All-Statetailback at Carver High School inGeorgia, rushing for 1,627 yardson only 125 carries. Thats an

average of 13 yards per carry, forthe mathematically challenged.

JAYMAR LATCHISON: The 6-3,245-pound sophomore defensiveend from New York steps into astarting role after collecting 2sacks as a backup last season.

Latchison should be a beneficia-ry of the switch to the 4-3. With thedefensive line primarily respon-sible for putting pressure on theopposing quarterback, Latchisons

sole responsibility will b e to getaround the edge. Hes shown thequickness to do that throughoutpreseason practice.

CARMEN MESSINA: A 6-2,222-pound sophomore middle line-

backer, the Addison, Ill., nativealso should be involved in moreplays this season.

Messina, who also steps into astarting role in 2009, was requiredto take on as many blockers as hecould under the previous defensivescheme. This year, hell have theability to roam the field, use hisspeed to chase the football and usehis Arnold Schwarzenegger-likeguns to put the hurt on runners.

IAN CLARK: The 6-2, 215-poundsenior free safety out of HighlandHigh School must help protect aninexperienced corps of corner-

backs. Clark, however, also has apenchant for make plays close tothe line of scrimmage because ofhis instincts for the ball.

He also was the second-leadingpunt-returner in the nation lastyear with a school-record 19.8yards per return. Clarks produc-tion, however, will be determinedby his health. Hes had shoulderinjuries, and dislocated his leftshoulder during fall camp.

Donovan Porterieis learning a newsystem underMike Locksley.

Head coach Mike Locksley took a play out of his massive playbook and has given a basic description to illustratesome of the inner workings of his spread offensive scheme.

    OFFENSE

Were a no-huddle attackof multiple tempos thatallow us to attack.

The offensive play comesin from the sidelines. Theoffense aligns in formation, and the quarterback looksover and is directed to runthe play or change the playas directed by offensivecoordinator Darrell Dickey.

Locksley then counters with a defense UNM might run against such a play spread offedays in college football; six teams the Lobos will face this season ran variations of the

objectives on that side of the ball.

We will operate our base out of a fourdefensive lineman look with threelinebackers, two safeties and twocornerbacks.

We have the ability based on the personnelof the offense to go to a 4-2 with fivedefensive backs, called our nickel, or a 3 -2with six defensive backs.

If the offense huddles, we will huddle.

A defensive coach will signal the front call where we align our defensive linemenand linebackers as well as our coverageassignment in the secondary.

Mike Locksley, UNM head coach (as explained to Greg Archuleta)

    In this particular play:

n The quarterback has a drop-back concept out of a 2x2 formation (double wide receivers on bothsides of the formation).

n The quarterback takes a five-step, timed drop from shotgun f ormation. Based on the coverage hereads after the snap, he begins his progression for the route. Every receiver route has a starting pointand ending point, all based on coverage as well as down and distance.

nIn this play, the quarterback would read the weak-side linebacker and high-low him with the Z and Yreceivers. The running back would be his last option, or checkdown.

OK, now for that otherquestion. Is Locksley the guywho can do for UNM whatUrban Meyer did for Utah,

or at least what Harry Potterdid for Hogwarts?

Late last fall, even beforehe stepped down, Long wastalking about the need fora miracle-worker coach tofinish the job hed started athis alma mater. Exhibit A, hesaid, was Meyer, the guy whotook Utah to an undefeatedseason and a BCS bowlvictory in 2004. Meyer thenleft for Florida, where hehasnt done badly, either.

Meyer being thusunavailable for the NewMexico job, UNM athletics

director Paul Krebs set aboutfinding the next-best thing. Itwas Krebs whod given Meyer

his first head-coaching gigat Bowling Green, so thatwas encouraging from amiracle-worker standpoint.Krebs track record at UNMin hiring coaches for othersports has been impressive, too.

He settled on Locksley, whobrought with him a glossyrsum from assistant-coaching stops at Maryland,Florida (no, not under Meyer)and Illinois.

    But is he that miracleworker?

Heres what I see: Locksleyhas dramatically changedthe culture within the UNMprogram something Longall but admitted had to

happen if that elusive nextlevel were to be reached.

Locksley has revampednot just the offense anddefense, but the conditioningprogram and the practicetempo. The first four daysof preseason practice, theinnovative new coach splitthe team into two groups toallow younger players morerepetitions. Last Saturday,a week before the seasonopener at Texas A&M, heput his troops through asimulated game.

    Heres what I havent

hiring process, and that hedseen in Meyer when he hiredhim at Bowling Green. Nordo I see the depth of on-f ieldtalent that Meyer inheritedfrom Ron McBride, hispredecessor at Utah.
