SUGGESTED ROUTES

Flower HourTo view the �owers at their best, choose the hottest time of the day, which is from 11h00 to 15h00. It’s the extended �ower power hour. Respect the �ower paradise: Walk with care and don’t trample plants unnecessarily. Please don’t pick any buds, bulbs or specimens, nor disturb any sensitive dune areas.

Sun RunThe �owers always face the sun. Try and drive towards the sun to enjoy nature’s dazzling display. When viewing �owers on foot, stand with the sun behind your back. Certain �owers don’t open when it’s overcast.

No-Phone ZonesThe towns along the Flower Route can be few and far between, especially in Namakwa. Cell phone reception isn’t always available and you need to factor that in when planning your trip.

Local Is Lekker!The locals are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the best �ower spots. So don’t be afraid to ask for their guidance and insider tips!

Petal to the Metal Whether you wish to escape the city for a weekend mini-circuit or prefer a longer meander up north, the Flower Route has itineraries to suit everyone. For the �ower connoisseur wishing to identify rarer species, specialised regional �ora guides are available from bookstores in Cape Town.

When calculating travel time for certain distances, don’t forget to add in your viewing hours. As you drive, ask the locals how long it takes to the next stop. Keep extra refreshments with you, especially further north where towns are more isolated.

FLOWER SPECIESOF NAMAKWA

Dimorphotheca pluvialis (Namakwa Daisy)

These mass �owering daisies can be confused with snow all along the Namakwa region.

Arctotis fastuosa (Bittergousblom)

This proud �ower can be found growing abundantly in the Tankwa National Park during springtime.

Colchicum sp. (Cup-and-Saucer)

These low-lying �owers can be found north of the Cape Floral Region towards Namakwa.

Tripteris oppositifolia (Skaapbos)

This stunning �ower can be found all over the Namakwa region, especially in Vanrhynsdorp.

Gazania krebsiana (Gousblom)

This beautiful �ower is well known as the pride of the �ower route .

Jordaaniella cuprea (Rankvygie)

This gorgeous creeping succulent blooms from July to August.

South Africa’s largest province is an absolutely must-see destination, but a visit to this vast province during the annual �ower season is a bucket-list item for any nature lover or outdoor enthusiast. From July to September each year, this traditionally arid region is transformed into a �oral extravaganza incomparable to anywhere else on the globe.

Flower Season Dates:Experience the magic of the Namakwa and West Coast in full bloom. FLOWER SPECIESOF THE WEST COAST

Between July and October each year, the sun-baked plains and sandstone mountains of the West Coast metamorphose into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour as the veld gives rise to the world renowned wild �owers.

The roadsides and wetlands are �lled with the last patches of Arum Lillies and white Rain Daisies herald the arrival of spring, jostling with tiny yellow Button Daisies, Blue Flax and pink Nemesias. Look out for the daintier, sometimes hidden Winecups, Sparaxis, Lechenalia and Babiana �owers. Good rains will ensure that the carpets of �owers last well into October and multi-coloured Vygies, Watsonias and �elds of orange and yellow ‘Stinkkruid” will await you too.

To fully take advantage of the region’s spring, wild �ower experience, combine a visit to one of the wild �ower reserves on the West Coast with the annual Wild Flower shows held in Clanwilliam, Darling and Hope�eld where more than 300 wild �ower species and –plants are displayed.

Biedouw Valley and Ramskop Nature Reserve near Clanwilliam, Tienie Versfeld and Groenekloof Reserve near Darling, “Groot Winterhoek” Reserve near Porterville, Postberg in the West Coast National Park and the three �oral kingdoms (Fynbos, Succulents and Nama- Karoo vegetation) in the Namaqua West Coast region, is a must to visit.

Cape Town has numerous walking clubs, conservation groups and societies that welcome visitors who have a shared interest in combining outdoor walks with the enjoyment of viewing �owers growing in their natural habitat. Each season brings its own surprises, with spring �owers extending well into November.

In summer, you will �nd Red Disas and indigenous orchids on the mountain peaks, with rare Ericas and Buchus covering the mountain slopes or clinging to waterfall gulleys.
