Editor's Note I Note du Rédacteur

As promised in our last issue, we now present a more fitting and con- sidered tribute to Dr. W. J. Rose by two authors who, in different capacities, knew him well. With those who knew him, his memory is safe and unlikely to fade; for the rest of us, his work will be an enduring monument. While this issue contains a formal tribute, the certain appearance of his name in the footnotes of future volumes and in the allusions of future authors will be the real measure of his contribution.

At a moment when a profound pessimism has overtaken many, if not most, of those interested in and attached to eastern Europe, we leave to our readers the task of discerning the bitter irony which underlies the scholarly papers which we here present. This irony will perhaps be more obvious in our December 1968 issue which will be devoted to "Czechoslovakia - 1968."
