Dutch DesignconceptDutch Design Hotel Artemis is een design en

kunst hotel, geïnspireerd door de puurheid

en originaliteit van Nederlands ontwerp.

Nederlands design is bekend om zijn sterke,

originele vormen, de pragmatische benadering

en het gebruik van nieuwe materialen.

Nederlandse kunstenaars maken graag

kunst met een knipoog, dat leidt tot positieve

inspiratie en een opwelling van vrolijkheid.

Van de lobby tot aan de kamers zijn tekenen van

Nederlands design te vinden in allerlei vormen

en manieren. De geometrische invloeden

van de bekende Nederlandse architecten en

kunstenaars Mondriaan, Dudok en Rietveld

zijn te zien in de architectuur van het gebouw

en de algemene ruimten.

Door het gehele hotel vindt u meubelontwerpen

van hedendaagse Nederlandse designers,

zoals Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek en Richard

Hutten. Deze ontwerpen samen met een aantal

speciaal opgedragen kunstwerken vormt de

Artemis vaste design & kunstcollectie.

Dutch Design Hotel Artemis is a design and

art hotel, inspired by the purity and originality

of Dutch Design. Dutch Design is known for its

strong, original shapes and forms, the pragmatic

approach and the use of new materials. Dutch

artists love to make art with a wink, which leads

to positive inspiration and a burst of liveliness.

From the lobby to the rooms, Dutch design is

evident in the hotel in all shapes and forms. The

geometric influences of the well known Dutch

architects and artists Mondriaan, Dudok and

Rietveld can be seen in the architecture of the

building and the main spaces.

Throughout the hotel you will find privately

owned design furniture of contemporary Dutch

designers such as Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein

Eek and Richard Hutten. This design together

with specially commissioned artworks, forms

the Artemis Art & Design private collection.

De D&A; Design & ARTemis expositie is een

de gehele begane grond van Dutch Design

Hotel Artemis een verrassend ander uiterlijk

krijgt. Elke expositie heeft zijn eigen thema.

Artemis biedt hiermee een platform aan

zowel beginnende als gevestigde Nederlandse

kunstenaars en designers om hun werk te

tonen aan een veelzijdig publiek. Gasten

kunnen naast de kunst ook genieten van

heerlijk eten en drinken in restaurant ‘De Stijl’.

The D&A; Design & ARTemis exhibition is an

unique concept where each three months

the ground floor of the hotel is changed to a

surprisingly different setting. Each exhibition

has its own theme. Dutch Design Hotel Artemis

provides a platform for both beginning and

established artists and designers to show

their work to an all round public. Beside the

art, guests can enjoy tasty food and drinks in

De ontwerpster Darifa Rahroh studeerde

modevormgeving en beeldende kunst aan de

Hogeschool voor de kunsten in Utrecht. Ze

woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Darifa houdt

ervan om alledaagse gebruiksvoorwerpen uit

hun context te halen, en deze opnieuw vorm

te geven.

De ‘Cup of Light’ is een bijzondere combinatie

van licht, afmeting en materialen. Deze design

lichtobjecten worden vervaardigd uit glazen

van verschillende kleuren, materialen, en

afmetingen. Hierdoor krijgt elke ‘Cup of Light’

zijn eigen sfeer .

A Cup of Light | Darifa RahrohThe designer Darifa Rahroh studied fashion

design and visual arts at the Utrecht School of

the Arts. She lives and works in Amsterdam.

Darifa likes taking everyday objects out of

their context and giving them a new ‘designed’

purpose.

The ‘Cup of Light’ is a special combination of

light, dimensions and materials. These designer

light objects are made out of cups of different

colours, materials, and dimensions. This gives

each ‘Cup of Light’ its own atmosphere.

Basic 65 Orange - A Cup of Light

Deze Cup of Light kroonluchter is gemaakt van 70

harde transparante plastic bier glazen. De cups

kunnen gemaakt worden van bier, wijn, champagne,

longdrink of whiskey glazen en in verschillende

afmetingen: zo ook de Diamonds 50, 25, 15 of 7

(het getal geeft de hoeveelheid cups aan waaruit de

lamp bestaat.) Deze Cup of Light heeft een mooie,

schitterende, sprookjesachtige, futuristische sfeer.

De Diamond geeft een heel mooi patroon op muren,

plafonds en tafels, maar blijft neutraal door zijn

transparantie. Hoogte 120 cm, omtrek 200 cm.

Ze begon haar opleiding aan de Koninklijke

Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag

en verhuisde vervolgens naar New York om

daar haar opleiding industrieel ontwerpen aan

Pratt Institute af te maken. Twee jaar geleden

opende ze in Brooklyn haar studio ‘studioooij’

waar ze aan textiel, meubels en keramiek

werkt. Haar werk is gepubliceerd in The New

York Times en verscheidene boeken. Haar

Little Dutch Hero vazen zullen vermeld worden

in het Dutch Design Yearbook 2012.

Marianne started her design career at the Royal

Academy of Art in The Hague and later moved to

New York to finish her Industrial Design degree

at Pratt Institute. Two years ago she opened

her design studio ‘studioooij’ in Brooklyn where

she works in a variety of disciplines, including

textiles, furniture and ceramics. Her work has

been covered in The New York Times and several

books. Her Little Dutch Hero vases will be

featured in the Dutch Design Yearbook 2012.

A curious era in American cultural history took place

in the late 19th century, known as ‘Holland mania’.

Confused by the constant influx of immigrants and

searching for an identity to root for, Americans revised

their understanding of colonial history, even going so

far as to designate the Netherlands, the ‘Mother of

America’. Everything Dutch was in vogue for a period

that lasted about 40 years.

It was during this period that an American writer, Mary

Mapes Dodge, wrote the tale about Hans Brinker and

the Silver Skates, which also features a little Dutch

boy who saves his country from flooding by holding his

finger in a dike.

This saga, as well as the modern day confusion of being

a Dutch immigrant myself in the state where this story

originated - while living in a world where immigration

is both easier than ever but in certain circles more

and more frowned upon - was the inspiration for these

vases.

Het Amerikaanse verhaal over een Nederlands

jongetje dat het land redt door een vinger in een

lekkende dijk te steken, werd in de 19e eeuw in

Amerika geschreven tijdens een periode die wel

‘Holland mania’ wordt genoemd. Door de enorme

immigratiestroom raakten mensen in verwarring

over hun identiteit en grepen terug op de eerste

ontdekkers van New York, de Nederlanders. Dit

verhaal is in de VS bekender dan in Nederland.

Deze vazen zijn gebaseerd op dit verhaal. Als

immigrant in de staat waar dit verhaal zijn oorsprong

vond én waar mensen uit allerlei windstreken wonen,

is hedendaagse verwarring en verwondering over

identiteit aan de orde van de dag.

Daarbij is het tegenwoordig makkelijker dan ooit om

je te vestigen in een ander land, terwijl de weerstand

er tegen in sommige kringen almaar groter wordt. Is

de geest van de immigratie uit de fles, of stoppen we

hem liever terug?

andere ogen naar een kussen te kijken. In plaats

van een kussen op te vatten als een plat stuk canvas

dat versierd kan worden, laat deze collectie zien wat

er gebeurt als je een kussen beschouwt als een 3D

object - een ruimte die iets kan bevatten.

This lighthearted textile collection was conceived by

looking at a pillow as a 3D object – a thing that can

contain something – rather than by merely decorating

a flat canvas. This way, the pillows disappears and

becomes a different thing altogether.

Na een kunstzinnige opleiding, gevolgd door

de modevakschool belandde Sacha Wendt

in het (straat)theater. Zij creëerde hier in

samenwerking met verschillende ontwerpers

en stylisten de meest uiteenlopende kleding

voor film, televisie, theater en festivals.

Naast opdrachten in kostuums ontwerpt

en vervaardigt Sacha tassen. Deze kleine

series worden in diverse galeriewinkels,

museumwinkels en boutiques verkocht.

Sacha WendtAfter an artistic schooling, followed by fashion

college, Sacha Wendt has chiefly worked in

(street)theatre. Collaborating with designers

and stylists, she has created the most diverse

array of costumes for theatre, festivals, film and

television.

Besides commissioned costumes, Sacha designs

and produces handbags. These limited editions

are sold in gallery shops, museum shops and

boutiques.

Bij deze ontwerpen verwerkt Sacha Wendt

nostalgische modellen met een vleugje humor. Zij

haalt de koffer en schooltas van zolder, steekt de

handtas van oma in een nieuwe en kleurrijke vorm.

Door de eigenzinnige en bijzondere twee-

dimensionale vertaling, lijken de tassen uit een

getekende strip herrezen. Dit resulteert in prachtige

tassen die zowel voor werk als voor speciale

gelegenheden geschikt zijn.

‘2D’ heeft zowel tassen als beschermhoezen voor

diverse communicatie apparaten met beeldscherm,

zoals de mobiele telefoon, de laptop en de tablet.

Sacha Wendt gebruikt voor haar 2D tassen en hoezen

wolvilt en leer. Wol heeft van nature een vettige laag,

is waterafstotend en vuilwerend.

Door de structuur van de vezel bezit de kleur een

prachtige intense diepte.

Tassen museum Hendrikje in Amsterdam heeft de

rode ‘koffer’ van wolvilt in de collectie en verkoopt

tevens 2D -tassen in de museumwinkel.

Sacha’s 2D bags and sleeves are nostalgic models

with a dash of humour. She revamps the attaché case

and school satchel of yesteryear, and casts granny’s

handbag in a colourful new form.

With their quirky two-dimensionality, the 2D bags look

straight out of a comic book. These stunning bags can be

worn to school or work as well as on special occasions.

In addition to bags, the 2D series includes SmartSleeves

for mobile phones, tablets and laptops.

For her 2D bags and sleeves Sacha Wendt uses wool

felt and leather. Wool has a natural greasy coating that

makes it water repellent and dry soil resistant. The

structure of the fibre produces colours of wonderful

depth and intensity.

The Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam recently

acquired the red wool felt suitcase for its permanent

collection and the 2D bags are on sale in the museum’s

shop.

Karin Rianne Westendorp studeerde aan de

Kunstacademie AKI/ArtEZ Enschede in de

richting Autonome Kunsten, specialisatie

Media Kunst. Ze studeerde af in 2010 en

woont en werkt sinds 2011 in Rotterdam. Haar

werken bestaan uit videokunst, animaties en

tekeningen. Inspiratie haalt ze onder andere

uit natuur, materialen, structuren, haar en

huid.

Karin werkte met haar tekeningen

voornamelijk met houtskool. Sinds afgelopen

jaar tekent ze ook in kleur, waarbij ze

verschillende materialen gebruikt zoals

potlood, softpastel, markers en acrylstiften.

De tekeningen lijken op landschappen of

vlaktes van structuren zoals haren, huid en

gras. Sommige tekeningen suggereren dat

ze bepaalde dieren of andere organismen

weergeven. Anderen zijn meer gefocust op

tekentechnieken en zijn abstracter. Van veraf

is het een grote massa, van dichtbij worden

de lijnen scherper en kan men de techniek en

getekende lijnen beter bekijken

Karin RianneWestendorp

Karin Rianne Westendorp studied Visual Arts

with specialisation Media Art at the Academy of

Arts AKI/ArtEZ in Enschede. She graduated in

2010 and she lives and works in Rotterdam since

2011. Her works include video art, animations

and drawings. She gets her inspiration from

nature, materials, structures, hair and skin.

Karin worked with her drawings mainly with

charcoal. Since last year she also draws in colour

and uses different materials such as pencils,

soft pastel, markers and acrylic markers. Her

drawings look like landscapes or surfaces of

hair, skin or grass. Some drawings suggest

showing animals or other organisms. Other are

more focused on the drawing techniques and

are more abstract. From far away it looks like

a mass of lines, up close the lines are getting

sharper and the drawing techniques can be seen

clearer.

De kunstenaar Ad Verstijnen is geboren in

Arnhem. Hij studeerde aan de Academie voor

Beeldende Vorming, opleiding voor Teken- en

Handvaardigheidleraar te Tilburg. Hij heeft

zijn eigen galerie–atelier te Boxtel.

Ad schildert naast een scala aan dierfiguren

vooral mensen lachend van oor tot oor. Ze

verschijnen op doek in heldere en sprekende

kleuren op een pakkende manier, soms

gemaakt met een lichte penseelstreek, de

andere keer zwaarder aangezet. Zijn werken

hebben een krachtig signatuur, niet van

humor gespeend. Het expressieve werk van

Ad Verstijnen laat een wereld vol verbazing en

uitbundigheid, een mix van droom, fantasie en

realisme zien.

Ad wil naar het eigene, het spontane. De

jeugdtekeningen van zijn kinderen waren vaak

een bron van inspiratie. Het optimistische,

realistische en spontane sprak hem hierin aan.

Volwassenen lijken dit soms wel een beetje

verloren te zijn. Hij begon dit steeds meer

te zien en te waarderen. De stijl die hieruit

directe leefwereld van het kind: kind met poes,

fiets, vogeltje en bal. Al deze afbeeldingen

symboliseren de vrijheid en hebben niets

te maken met de normen en regels van de

volwassen maatschappij.

The artist Ad Verstijnen was born in Arnhem, The

Netherlands. He studied at the Art Academy in

Tilburg. He has his own gallery-atelier in Boxtel.

Besides a wide range of animal figures, Ad

Verstijnen especially paints human figures,

smiling from ear to ear. They appear in very

bright and brilliant colours in an infectious way,

sometimes in a light brushstroke, at other times

in a heavier one. Ad Verstijnen’s work has a

strong signature, full of humour. His expressive

work depicts a world full of amazement and

exuberance, a mixture of dream, fantasy and

reality.

Ad wants to go back to the own and the

spontaneous. He has a fascination for a

child’s drawing. Here he finds the originality,

spontaneity and the optimism that so many

adults seem to have lost.


His style shows a clear affinity with the bright

colours and spontaneous expression from artists

of the Cobra-group like Karel Appel, Corneille

and Constant. Ad paints the home environment

of a child: child with cat, bicycle, bird and ball.

All these pictures symbolize freedom and have

nothing to do with the values and rules of the

mature society.

Ad Verstijnen would like to share his happiness;

‘Hopefully my magic of the mind, heart and brush

succeeds in bringing the viewer to the multiple

and varicolored world of which I dream.’

Haidy Scholsberg is het ‘startende brein’

achter Tuffy&Co. Ze heeft modevormgeving

gestudeerd aan de Willem de Kooning

Academie te Rotterdam. Ze woont en werkt in

Amstelveen. Tot 2009 werkte ze voor diverse

concerns als styliste/ modeontwerpster.

Daarna is ze haar affiniteit met interieur

producten en mode gaan combineren en

realiseerde ze dit met Tuffy&Co. Centraal in

haar ontwerpen staat het praktische en de

multifunctionaliteit.

Fun:Tuffy&Co combineert mooi, speels

design met gewoon praktisch.

Top: De designs zijn gemaakt van

hoogwaardige, stoere materialen en

kunnen tegen een stootje.

Use: Tuffy&Co maakt producten om te

gebruiken en niet om in de kast te zetten.

Tuffy: Dit is het nieuwe alternatief voor de

welbekende zitzak. Het leuke extraatje zit

hem in het feit dat je de Tuffy cube in een

handomdraai open kan klappen waardoor

er een loungestoel ontstaat. Ideaal voor de

kinderkamer, woonkamer en/of tuin. Tuffy

is gemaakt van 100% compact foam met een

afritsbare met een hoes van nylon/canvas of

Tuffy&Coby HaidyScholsberg

skai. De hoes is waterafstotend en makkelijk

schoon te maken. Aan de zijkant zit een handig

opbergvak voor een tijdschrift, tablet of boek.

Met de lus is de poef eenvoudig op te pakken en

te verplaatsen. De poefen zijn binnen en buiten

te gebruiken. Tuffy is een poef met karakter,

je maatje. De naam zegt het al, Tuffy betekent

sterk (van het Engelse woord ‘tough’).

Haidy Scholsberg is the starting figure behind

Tuffy&Co. She studied fashion design at the

Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam.

She lives and works in Amstelveen. Until 2009

she worked for several concerns as a stylist/

fashion designer. After a while she wanted to

combine her affinity with interior products with

fashion and realized this with Tuffy & Co. Central

in her designs are, the practical and the multi

functionality.

Use: Tuffy&Co makes products to use, not only

to show.

Tuffy: This is the new alternative to the

well-known beanbag. The fun part lies in the fact

that you can open the Tuffy cube in a split second

and a lounge chair arises. Ideal for the children’s

room, living room and/or garden. Tuffy is made

from 100% compact foam with a detachable

cover of Nylon/canvas or Skai. The cover is water

resistant and easy to clean.


On the side is a handy storage compartment for

a magazine, tablet or book. With the loop the

cube is easy to catch and move. The cubes are

for inside and outside use. Tuffy is a cube with

character, your buddy. It’s all in the name, Tuffy

means strong (from the English word ‘tough’).

Ik ben de TuffyMedium en kan ook als bijzettafel,

voetenbank, of chill/lounge bank worden gebruikt. Ik

ben het grotere maatje, in medium. De TuffyMedium

kan zowel een luxe designuitstraling hebben voor

binnen als een casual lounge buitengevoel geven.

De Tuffy’s kunnen in diverse materialen (canvas,

kunstleer) op maat gemaakt worden. Verschillende

mogelijkheden zijn te zien op deze expositie.

I am the TuffyMedium and can also be used as side

table, footstool, or chill/lounge bank be used. I am the

bigger buddy, in medium. The TuffyMedium can be made

in a luxury design look for inside or a casual lounge feel

for outdoor. The Tuffy’s are in various materials (canvas,

synthetic leather) custom made. Different possibilities

can be seen at this exhibition.
