D&A EXPO 11.2:NATUUR | NATURE
De natuur is verweven in ons dagelijks leven en is enorm
veelzijdig.
Of passen
verrassen.
Het is een gevarieerde expositie geworden van
meubelontwerp, schilderkunst, sieraden, autonome
vormgeving tot keramiek.
Natuurmonumenten
Nature is part of our daily lives and is very versatile.
Think about the rich plant and wildlife, the diversity of
landscapes, the elements, but also natural materials
and organic forms. This has been our inspiration for
composing the exhibition ‘Nature’.
Be creative yourself this exhibition and create your
own landscape on the ‘Clay Table’ by Erwin Zwiers.
Or perhaps the moss jewellery fit perfectly with your
new look? No more clumsy drawing water from a rain
barrel? We show you the solution. Did you know that
mould can also be used for the manufacture of objects?
Thus we have a vase of mould that we want to show you.
Is it a colony of penguins who took over the hotel, or
what is it? This and many other diverse art and design
is shown during the exhibition ‘Nature’. Come and be
surprised.
It has become a varied exhibition of furniture design,
painting, jewellery, autonomous design to ceramics.
Natuurmonumenten
Our exhibition ‘Nature’ would not be complete
without paying attention to nature conservation in the
Netherlands. We do this in close cooperation with the
largest private nature organization in the Netherlands
‘Natuurmonumenten’. That is why on this, for a
nature organization unconventional location, namely
the bustling business centre of Amsterdam, you can
find more information about the nature reserves and
activities of this nature organization. Natuurmonumen-
ten manages 355 nature reserves. Here you will find
enough tips to head out into nature this summer. And
you might be stimulated in order to support nature in
our country!

STUDIO ERWIN ZWIERS
‘Twisted Lights’
Studio Erwin Zwiers introduceert een nieuwe serie
lampen ‘Twisted Lights’. De inspiratie voor de ‘Twisted
Lights’ komt uit het gebruikte materiaal, namelijk
buigtriplex.
uniek is.
ENG
Studio Erwin Zwiers is a design studio that focuses on
designing (interior) products and interiors. Erwin Zwiers
graduated from the Academy of Arts in Utrecht in the
direction of 3D Design in 2009. Since his graduation
many exhibitions followed all over Europe. For example
Erwin Zwiers was selected as one of the ten talents
worldwide to exhibit at the ‘London Design Festival’ at
the ‘Tent Talent Zone’. The inspiration to design products
and interiors often comes from the materials used. Also
the beach is a great source of inspiration.
Design (vrije vormgeving).
‘Claytable’
De ‘Leave your shape behind collection’ is geïnspireerd
Bijvoorbeeld
hotellobbies, wachtkamers en speelruimtes in zor-
ginstellingen, scholen en kinderdagverblijven, of
brainstorm ruimtes bij bedrijven. Daarnaast zou

‘Claytable’
The inspiration for the ‘Leave your shape behind
collection’ comes from the beach. The beach is one of
the fewest places where traces of humans and animals
are left behind in the sand, which makes them visible.
The ‘Claytable’ is a form of translation for traces that
are left behind. The surface of clay makes the ‘Claytable’
attractive to play and shape and therefore evolve.
The applications of the ‘Claytable’ are various. The
surface of clay makes the table attractive to children
and adults. All tend to touch the clay and play with it.
Because of its attraction, the clay table could be an
ideal product for public spaces. Such as hotel lobbies,
waiting and play rooms in medical institutions, schools
and nurseries, or brainstorm areas for companies. In
addition, the ‘Claytable’ can also be used for children
and adults with mental or physical limitations to
stimulate different senses. In short, there are plenty
possibilities and applications.
‘Twisted Lights’
Studio Erwin Zwiers introduces a new series of lamps,
‘Twisted Lights’. The inspiration for the ‘Twisted
Lights’ comes from the used material, namely bend
plywood. This type of plywood is perfect to bend, when
it is properly processed, so the forming capabilities are
endless. Each lamp is handmade which makes every
lamp unique.

STUDIO DANCKMER
‘Strandzak’ beach furniture
‘Strandzak’ is one of the graduation projects of Coen
Danckmer Voordouw. He graduated at the Design
Academy Eindhoven in 2010 and founded Studio
Danckmer in early 2011.
‘Strandzak’ beach furniture is composed of large long
objects inspired by sand dunes. Nice to sit on- or lean
against it. Alone, with family or friends. The objects are
made of soft yet strong fabric. On the beach they are
filled up with sand. The material creates a solid seating
object.
‘Strandzak’ has a natural, rugged look. At the start of the
summer season beach holders can fill up the objects.
Thanks to the materials and the weight of the objects
they can remain on the beach throughout the season.
After the summer, the bag is opened, emptied, washed
and stored for the next year . By using the sand on the
beach the transportation of the furniture is minimized
and is it an ecological product.
Especially for the exhibition ‘Nature’, Studio Danckmer
has developed a terrace version of ‘Strandzak’. This
version is lighter and more comfortable than the beach
version because he is partially filled with EPS-pearls.
Also the terrace version can remain outside thanks to a
waterproof bag inside. There are also cushions added so
you can comfortably sit on the terrace floor.
During the exhibition ‘Nature’ you can enjoy the sun on
the terrace of the Dutch Design Hotel Artemis, sitting on
a ‘Strandzak’. Let the summer begin!
‘Strandzak’
komen!

STUDIO BAS VAN DER VEER
Being the son of a photographer and a costume
designer, it was no surprise that Bas van der Veer (1985)
had creative ambitions. In 2009 he graduated at the
Design Academy Eindhoven. He had internships at the
prestigious studio of Kiki van Eijk & Joost van Bleiswijk.
Meanwhile he has his own design studio in Eindhoven.
His passion as a designer is to translate his dreams and
wishes into real products that are useful to himself and
to others.
The ‘Pure Raindrop’
The ‘Pure Raindrop’ is a rain barrel that makes saving
water really easy by providing a watering can that fills
up automatically when it rains. This way, the user does
not have to fill the can with our precious tap water, but
uses ‘free’ rainwater for the garden instead. With the
small tap at the bottom of the barrel, the watering can
can be refilled.
The design was the winner of the ‘René Smeets award
2009’ and was shortlisted for several other prestigious
design awards, among which the ‘Melkweg award’ and
the ‘Condé Nast Traveller I&D Awards’. The ‘Raindrop’
is the production version of ‘A Drop of Water’, one of Bas
van der Veer’s graduation works from Design Academy
Eindhoven. The design is currently produced by Dutch
pottery firm Elho and available for sale in garden
centres across Europe.

PHING THING | GERT-JAN VLAMING
Many books are written about the ‘Phing Things’. It looks
like the ‘Phing Things’ are just standing, but the strange
thing is that if you pass by and look at them, you will feel
a glow of happiness. There are several theories about
the origins of the ‘Phing Things’. Most people think that
they are coming from the Antarctic’s. They believe that
their natural habitat is declining as the ice gaps are
melting due to global warming. These people assume
that they are a kind of a penguin, but are they...........
Phing Things are ‘interior toys’.
They are communicating with their surroundings and
are telling their tale by the way you place them in your
interior. They will tell you a different story every time
that you are moving them around and placing them in a
different location. There is no place in your house where
they cannot stand. The stranger the place, the more
exciting story they will tell. This is how you can create
your own story with art; depending on your day, mood
or feeling. So let the ‘Phing Things’ lighting up your
surroundings.
‘Phing Things’ are designed by ‘Boywonder’ (Gert-Jan
Vlaming, 1971), a Dutch character designer living
in London. He is the owner of ‘The Character King’,
a marketing and design bureau that specializes in
designing characters for commercials, games, books
and movies.
The white ‘Phing Things’ are made at ‘Superwerk’, a
sheltered workshop, in Almere. There are also wooden
‘Phing Things’ that are fair trade crafted in Sri Lanka.
Nederlandse karakter ontwerper.

SARAH MESRITZ
Jewellery designer Sarah Mesritz graduated at the
Academy of Arts in Maastricht in 2008.
Collection ‘Living Ornament’
’My fascination is nature, with its constant process
of growing. She changing every moment, and every
season. Think about trees in springtime, the colour of
grass, lichen on trees, a forest growing old. They all have
different atmospheres.
A stone for example, even though it is dead matter,
life finds its way on to the surface. My association with
this is lichen growing on a grave tomb. I see this as a
contradiction between life and death.
For my graduation work, I used ‘the growing of nature’
as an inspiration. I used the qualities of lichen to
visualize my fascination in the context of jewellery. My
aim was to create my ‘own lichen’. With materials,
such as leather, resin, paint and enamel I achieved a
growth on my grandmothers jewels. I am the new life
that is growing on the old jewellery, something new on
something old.’
Sarah Mesritz
Sieradenontwerpster Sarah Mesritz studeerde in 2008

THOMAS PLEEGING
Can products be grown too? ‘Mould’, meaning both a
fungus and a framework to make an object, is a research
into how a product can be brought to life, literally. The
underground part of a fungus, the mycelium is mixed
with cotton fibers and placed in a mould where it starts
to grow. After a month the fungus has formed a strong
web of mycelium and the design can be harvested. Inside
the vase is a wooden skeleton that serves as a source of
nutrients for the vase, since it is natural habitat is inside
dead wood. For as long as the vase has nutrients and
water it will stay alive and when it has reached a mature
enough stage it will start to reproduce and mushrooms
will grow from the vase. When the vase goes without
water for prolonged periods it will die and when thrown
away will be absorbed into the soil. ‘A bunch of flowers
will bring life into your home, but in this case, the vase,
too, will be a living thing.’
Scientists are getting better at manipulating the building
blocks of organisms. Soon, plants and micro-organisms
can be made to order, just like industrial materials.
Maybe in the future products that are made of plastics
nowadays are made by genetically modified bacteria
or fungi. The distinction between what is natural and
artificial seems to become more vague. For designers
this offers a fascinating new world of opportunities to
design with nature and make products grow.
The designer Thomas Pleeging graduated at the
Design Academy Eindhoven, department Man and
Communication in 2009. He is a communication
designer that let’s the message determine the medium.
This can be somewhat conventional, like a website or a
book or an out of the box interactive installation to living
vases made from fungi.
zelfs paddenstoelen gaan produceren. Water is sowieso
bestelling.Misschien zijn in de toekomst producten die
nu plastic zijn gemaakt door gemanipuleerde bacteriën
of schimmels.
communicatie in 2009. Thomas Pleeging is een com-
municatieontwerper die de boodschap de vorm laat
bepalen. Dit gaat van traditionelere media zoals
websites en boeken tot aan ongebruikelijkere projecten
als interactieve installaties en levende vazen gemaakt
van schimmel.

STUDIO ELSE’S
Else Schenkeveld established Studio Else’s after
graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in
2010. The design studio works on a variety of projects
relating product and interior design and the developing
of fashion concepts. Important for Else is the world that
surrounds us. This world we can create and compose
ourselves. Sometimes it may feel like you ended up in
a Fairytale. By giving the everyday special attention and
see and organize it in a different way, each day becomes
a little bit special.
‘Recollection’
The imprint of a flower, a memory that stays.
Growing up with a father who is an ecologist and a
mother who had a flower shop; nature and the desire
to capture, organize, and preserve it was always around
me.
Porcelain in between the leaves,
Colour turns into black,
Structures are taken over,
What seems to wither…
… will be captured forever.
Inspired by fossils, Studio Else’s created a technique to
give flowers a second and longer life. The pieces can be
placed in the interior on different sides of the surface.
Each time it gives a different view into the complex
structures only nature can create.
heen.
Gietklei tussen de bladeren,
Waar eerst kleur was is nu zwart,
Structuren worden overgenomen,
Wat dreigt te verwelken…
...wordt voor altijd vastgelegd.
Geïnspireerd door fossielen, ontwikkelde Studio Else’s
een procedé waarbij bloemen een tweede leven krijgen
in porselein.
maken.

MARTIN VLAMING
‘I believe that the more an artist tries to explain what he
really meant with his work, the more it diminishes the
work itself. But now I face the ‘thankless’ job to explain
who I am and how my work is created, and cannot do it
off with a sentence like ‘I just wanted to paint this’ or ‘no
idea, but this came out.’ Hereby my contribution to the
exhibition for Dutch Design Hotel Artemis:
I am Martin Vlaming, born in 1969 on the island of
Texel. This is actually a nice link with the theme for
this exhibition: Nature! My love for painting natural
phenomena goes back to my childhood. This of course
can be caused by nature conscious parenting and
growing up on a beautiful island. Still, I think everyone
who takes the trouble to observe nature is overwhelmed
by its diversity and creativity. Of course the concept
of nature is very broad, because we humans are also
nature itself, and everything we produce is ... nature?
Well, I do not want to go that far.
For me a good example of creativity in nature is the
‘Sea Dragon’ which I once luckily had the chance
to observe in Tasmania. An incredible creature
somewhere between a run-beaten children colouring
and a seahorse. A challenge to paint. Fits very well in a
Science fiction movie, but lives on this planet, in nature!
And as I write about it, I come to realize that this is the
main inspiration and thrive that keeps me painting.’
Martin Vlaming
Mijn

BETTINA KREB
Bettina Kreb (1976) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld
Academy (the Amsterdam Academy of Art and Design)
direction goldsmith. This reflected her background as
a goldsmith.
Nowadays her work is primarily autonomous. She
sees it as a challenge to combine design and fine art.
After her studies she lived and worked for long time in
Amsterdam. Recently she moved with her design studio
to her home country Germany.
Series ‘Rückrat’ / ‘Backbone’
This series of work was inspired by the human backbone
which forms the centre of our body. Its numerous
segments are the essence of balance of our skeleton.
In this sense it can be seen as a parallel to her work in
general, which tries to reach a certain balance between
its elements.
Through the meditative expression of her work, she
tries to capture streams from nature. As well as from
our surrounding reality, into three dimensional works
and drawings. Sculptures are often inspired by a found
object and the associations that come along with it.
The symbolical character and value of an image, which
is formed by a very personal background as well as
cultural influences, intrigues her.
Her main interest within the field of nature is the human
body. With this she means the human being with all his
facets: our psyches, the physical functions and organic
shapes, as well as sensorial perception play a big role.
An important question to her is how she can translate
our ‘inner selves’ - our psyches - into visual abstractions
to the outside world.
The shown works are a small range of material
possibilities. The objects can be ordered tailor made in
different material- as well as colour combinations.
Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam richting ‘edelsmeden’.
Duitsland.
