GENERAL DESCRIPTION

´ Burj Khalifa, also known as Burj Dubai, prior to itsinauguration, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United ArabEmirates, and the tallest man-made structure everbuilt, at 828 m (2,717 ft).

´ Inaugurated in January 4 -2010

´ Building is part of the flagship development calledDowntown Burj

´ Burj Khalifa is a large-scale and mixed-usedevelopment that contains 30,000 homes, 9 hotels,3 hectares parkland, 19 residential towers, the

Dubai Mall and the 12-hectare man-made BurjKhalifa Lake.

´ The total cost for the Burj Khalifa project was aboutUS$1.5 billion; and for the entire new "DowntownDubai", US$20 billion.

 A LITTLE HISTORY

´ Burj Dubai renamed as Burj Khalifa in honor of  Sheikh Khalifabin Zayed Al Nahyan - the president of the United Arab Emirates

´ The tower·s architect and engineer is Skidmore, Owings and Merrill,

LLP (Chicago). Bill Baker, the Chief Structural Engineer for theproject, invented the buttressed core structural system in order toenable the tower to achieve such heights economically. AdrianSmith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until2006, was the Design Partner on the project.

´ The primary builder is South Korean Samsung C&T, who also built

the Taipei 101 and PETRONAS Twin Towers. Turner ConstructionCompany was chosen as the construction project manager. Byadoption of SOM·s design and by being appointed as Architect andEngineer of Record, Hyder Consulting is legally the DesignConsultant for the tower.

´ February 2007: Surpasses the Sears Tower as the building with the most floors

´ 21 July 2007: Surpasses Taipei 101, whose height of 509.2 m

´ 12 August 2007: Surpasses the Sears Tower antenna, which stands 527.3 m

´ 12 September 2007: At 555.3 m, becomes the world's tallest freestanding structure, surpassing the CNTower in Toronto, and level 150 reached.

´ 1 September 2008: Height tops 688 m (2,257 ft), making it the tallest man-made structure ever built,surpassing the previous record-holder, the Warsaw Radio Mast in Konstantynów, Poland.

´ 17 January 2009: Topped out at 829.84 m
