ON THE COVER:
of Chicago was going totax you for the milesyou drive. Aren’t theywonderful? And now Ireally understand why wehad a Civil War and aRevolution. Let the so calledsmart people in suits tell us howto live. I have lost all respect for almost all politicians. There area few good ones but it is hard tofind one these days. What theyreally want is to take all your money and give you anallowance.
Illinois property taxes are thehighest in the US. New Jerseywas first but now is beat out bythe Land of Lincoln. Oh well
just pay up. You have to get a part time job when you retire jus t to pay taxes and healthinsurance.
I had a note from a reader inChampaign IL who thinks let-ting young people hunt 16 or younger should not be allowed, including deer, turkey or for thatmatter anything. He sent us back three pictures of these proudkids holding their first deer taken during the youth seasonwe published in ASO’s Marchedition.
Champaign Charlie said thiswas a terrible thing to allowthese young people to hunt deer.He also said that these kids aretaking young deer that are not
big enough to shoot. He wasadamant that young peopleshould not hunt at all. I wouldhave responded to him but therewas no return address only his
pen name: Champaign Charl ie.
If he is a real outdoor guy andnot some anti goof ball hewould understand that withoutthese young people participatingin hunting sports the concern for wildlife and conservation wouldstop and there would be no morehunting in the future.
That was the only anti letter Ihave ever received to memory in20 years. I guess he picked it up
Canterbury Talesabout zoning. Way over half of the homes are flat out shot.Coons, possums and groundhogs have made these placestheir homes. If you own a$100,000 home which bytoday’s standard is about anaverage price you will pay$3,000 a year in taxes. InMason County one of the poor-est counties in the state of Illinois has one of the highesttax rates in the state. There areonly 13,898 souls living inMason County.
The highest taxed county inIllinois is Kendal. Their tax for $100.000 is only $300 more for accessed value. Now MasonCounty has very few basic serv-ices and the tax rates are ridicu-lous. I told the tax board thatand they just stared at me in a
tax protest meeting last month. The county of Mason has no tax base except for far mer s andhomeowners. I wonder when thecitizens of Mason County willsay they had enough. And whatcan they do? Guess what noth-ing, pay it or move. It is reallyhard to move to another place inIllinois because it has just
become the highest taxed state
in the Union. One more thing some politi-cian named John Cullerton (D)
I have found a few mushrooms but of course not as many as Iwould like to. It is better thanlast year but not by much yet.The combination of wet groundand hot sun makes it happen allthe time. And it is rare when youget heat and water all at thesame time. I sure hope if you didget a few that you cooked themin real butter. There is no other good way to cook them than byusing USDA butter. Well enoughtalking about those morsels of gold get out and get ya some.
We absolved our old huntingclub the Red Nose Gun Club. But the club house I bought for a weekend retreat. I just aboutdied when I saw the tax bill for a property in an area where, well
it’s pretty tough. The floods of 2013 and two last year havemade 85 percent of the homesand cabins uninhabitable. Theyhave a good taxing body but evi-dently don’t have much to do

in Champaign and wasted his andmy time by showing his igno-rance. There are some real idiotsout there. If he is an outdoorsman
I am a dressmaker.Went to the ISRA’s IGOLD
gathering that is the Illinois GunOwners Lobby Day in SpringfieldApril 6th. I rode down withDebbie Park and a couple of other fellows to attend the event like Ihave for so many years. At onetime there were over 10,000 par-ticipants and it was a very impres-sive turnout. But now the turnoutis not what it used to be. I have agood idea why attendance is lowand it’s because Illinois finally hasconcealed carry in effect. Thatdoes not mean all’s quite on thewestern front for the anti-gunnersare working even harder.
The politicians especially out of the Chicago area are hard at work to get rid of conceal carry licenses. They work day and night to passlaws that will deny you the right to
protect yourself. Chief ExecutiveOfficer Richard Pearson of theISRA is the hardest working per-son I have ever known who spendscountless hours in Springfield lob-
bying so you can own a gun. He is just one of many at the ISRA but isone who is in the trenches everyday. He is a brilliant man by anystandards and has taken his goodwork ethic and his unbelievable
knowledge of how the state worksand has done yeoman’s job. Richis one of the most dedicated indi-viduals working for your gunrights in the state. He writes amonthly article on page 12explaining many of these bills hefights to stop every day.
I met him over 23 years ago andknew then that he had gun oil run-ning in his veins. I can’t praisehim enough for all he has doneand we are all very fortunate to aguy like him at the wheel. If youever run into Rich tell him thanks,a small praise like that goes a longway.
If you do own a gun please jointhe only organization that’s gotyour back covered the IllinoisState Rifle Association. You cancall them at 815-635-3198 or seeISRA.org.
It’s fishing time and right now isas good as it gets. I have heardfrom a dozen anglers and they areall doing well. At Reelfoot Lake inTiptonville Tennessee the crappie

It has long been the standing joke fromme to the Bass fishing world that if they don’t have teeth, they are bait!! This slo-gan has even been on my Predator Guide
Service hats and shirts, but the truth is, Icatch a lot of huge Largemouth Bass. Notbecause I target this species, but ratherbecause the giant Bass love to smack oversized muskie baits. I have been run-ning a guide service for muskies andwalleyes for the past 20 years, and every year we seem to put a dozen or so large-mouths over 6 pounds in the boat every year, with the biggest topping the sc ale at
just over 8-1/2 pounds. But, this year, has been an exceptional year for monster
Bass.
Case and point, it was the middle of May last year. I was getting close to cut-ting off the Ice-out Muskie season withwater temps hovering in the mid to
upper 70 degree range. The fish hadalready moved into their summer pat-terns. I had a day free, so I called up a good buddy of mine and told him to gearup heavy, bring his summer baits, andmeet me at the ramp around
4pm. Hesaid he would meet me at the ramp. Iscrambled through the boat, replacing my light weight, cool weather gear formy heavy stuff. Out went the 7 foot jerk bait rods spooled with 30 pound braidand 40 pound leaders, and in came the 8
foot 6 inch rods spooled with 80 pound
braid with 100 pound leaders. Rightbehind the small rods came the boxes of 4 inch Phantom jerks and other assorted4 inch baits. Then, in came the 6 to 10inch baits, including the surface baits. A quick look at my watch showed me I was
running a little late, so I ran back in thehouse and grabbed a couple heavy trolling rods and hit the road.
With the boat in the water, we headeddown the shoot. We hadn’t gone 20yards when I noticed the shad hadalready started to suspend in the 12 footrange. We scrambled to rig the 2 trolling rods with 8 inch cranks, and set the linecounters. The heat and lack of windmade it feel like it was July. I could feelmy pale, white skin receiving the first
good burn of the year as the 9.9 kickerpropelled us closer to the weed beds wehad planned to fish.
The big cranks had barely reachedtheir target depths when the port rodwent off. The bait clicker screamed as thefish took line. My buddy grabbed the rodand set the hook. Almost immediately, the fish started coming up. This unchar-acteristic action took us by surprisebecause with the force of the strike, wewere sure it was a muskie in the
upper 30
inch class. I kept my eyes to the bow of the boat, maintaining position over thedeep water where there was no structurefor it to get wrapped up. That’s when Iheard it, the tell, tell sign of a big Largemouth tail walking a mere 10 yardsfrom the boat.
A giggle from my buddy and a hearty Big Bass on was not so much music tomy ears, but rather disappointment.
The Bigger
The Betterby
Daniel Vinovich
Okay. Most guys would be jumping for joy if a 6 pound plus Largemouth wasdancing on the end of the line, but, withme, I just said jokingly, “hey, we got sumbait to hang under a float!!”
I know that ain’t the right thing to say,
but hell, I ain’t right! He fought the fishto the side of the boat where I hand-land-ed her. After a quick picture, I sent herback to the depths. We continued ourtrolling pass to the weed edge, quickly pulling the rods. We pulled the kickerand started bombing the weed edge with8-10 inch buck tails and 9 inch surfacebaits. The shallow water had already taken on the its green tint, announcing an algae bloom had started. Smallswarms of gnats buzzed our heads as we
wished for any kind of cooling breeze todrive them away.
I was not ready for this kind of weath-er this early in the year. The bug spray was still on the shelf in the garage, andthe shorts were still in the drawer. Wehad worked the deep edge for about 100yards when my buddy muttered he had a follow. “She came in slow and deep,” heannounced as he frothed the water withhis figure 8’s. This was a good sign thatwe had made the right call on the bigger
gear. My casting was a little more delib-erate now since we knew there were ‘skiesusing the weed edge. I quickly unsnapped the Jack Pot from the leader, and replaced it with a large prop baitcalled a Tally Wacker.
A Tal ly Wacker is kind of a combina-tion wake bait and prop bait. Its body throws an easily, trackable wake as its tailcreates a big sound with a 12 inch spray

of water. I flat out love this bait. It seemsto pull big strikes when other baits fail.
We were into the weed edge for anoth-er hundred yards when a huge explosioncame from the water under my bait.
Wait…wait…there it was, the
weight…Boom. I set the hook with sucha force it almost pulled my shoulder fromthe socket. Another big splashannounced the hooks had found theirmark. The heavy rod bent, and the fightwas on to horse the fish out of the weeds.“She’s coming up,” I announced as shecleared the weeds.
Whoosh! Another huge Largemouthbroke the surface with the 9 inch hunk of wood firmly embedded in her lower jaw.“Can you believe this,” I said? Two hogs
in the same day. She was also spawnedout. I can’t figure this out. I haven’t seenone of the Bass guys even set the hook ona fish yet. I held the fish high for the pic, taunting the guys in the Bass Boats, who,I knew, were cussing me under theirbreaths. “The looks those fella’s are giv-ing us could cut glass,” I said. “Must be a club tournament,” my buddy replied.
“How big was she,” another boat whowas fishing the same weed bed asked? “Atleast 6, maybe 7,” I replied. We released
her after a quick pic and pulled the boatoff the weed edge to give the tournamentboats a free pass since I knew most of them and did not want my phone blow-ing up the rest of the night, but not with-out one more diss on their fish of choice.
“Hey,” I yelled, “let’s hit the deepwater, all this edge is holding is BAIT!”
We looked at each other with a shitty grin, and pulled further out into themain basin. We were showing some goodmarks out over 15 feet of water, so we
snapped on a couple of heavy bucktails, counting them down to reach the depth
of the marks. It was not long when my buddy set the hook hard. Again, theheavy rod bowed under the force of the
strike.“This one has to be a ‘skie,” he said as
I scrambled for the net. “She’s coming up,” he muttered. “Not again,” I said justas another Giant Largemouth came tothe surface, shaking the Shumway Flasher (a 10’’ bucktail) with such forceit bent the stainless steel shaft into a 90degree angle. Again, we laughed, thistime out loud, as the looks from the bassguys burned right through the side of my boat.
Another pic, and off we went. We didmanage to stick a couple mid 30”

muskies later in the afternoon, but thisday definitely belonged to the big bucketmouths. We pulled the rods and headed
to the ramp. Up the bank went my buddy to get the trailer. Bass boat afterbass boat was being pulled from thewater as we wiped down my boat. They filed by me as if they were in a parade, each one asking the same thing, “What
the hell were you throwing??” With the boat strapped down, we
jumped in my Tundra and turned hertowards home. We just looked at eachother with the same shitty grin we had onthe lake saying, “think we could have

From the
Desk of:

Executive
Director ISRA.org EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Congratulations to the Illinois StateAir Pistol Team for taking the Gold inthe NRA National Air Pistol PostalMatch.
The team is made up of Scott
Breyer, Anatoly Andrianov, AdamNyenhuis, John LaBusier and MikeKeefe.
The competition was veryclose between first and second place, and the Illinois team won by twopoints.
Great job! After you have been in Springfield
lobbying for a while you notice yoursenses becoming more acute.
One of those senses is your sense of smell. In other words, you read a bill andyou think to yourself, "there is some-
thing about this bill that smellsfunny."
This is known as the "sniff test" and you can get amazingly goodat smelling a rat.
One such bill isSB3076.
SB3076 calls for giving certaincounty emergency managementagencies police powers (in countiesover 500,000, with a city over1,000,000). That is CookCounty. The first question is whywould county emergency manage-
ment agencies need police powers? We already have a number of policeagencies.
We have local policedepartments, sheriffs, police, statepolice, conservation police, the FBI,DEA, Homeland Security, UnitedStates Marshals, interagency tactical
teams and who knows what else run-ning around.
SB3076 asks authority for a litanyof things.
Some of the things that jumped out was the right to establish
their own private police force and toenforce whatever controls they woulddeem necessary to "protect the coun-ty and its elected officials."
Thatfolks, is county wide martial law. They are also requesting authority foraccess to data bases.
They could findout who has firearms then come andseize them as one of the operations of this new private police force.
In fact, this could grow into a private armycontrolled by the county board and its
officers.
How would you like to haveToni Preckwinkle, the Cook CountyBoard Chairwoman, in charge of your freedom?
Even if that never came to pass thepotential is still there.
If this newpolice organization wanted to, itcould still find out about yourfirearms, your FTIP checks and causeyou all kinds of unnecessary grief, and all on the tax payer’s dime.
Thisnew police organization does not
seem to be limited to the county itwas formed in because it appears tohave statewide jurisdiction.
On Wednesday, April 20th, SB3076came up in the Local GovernmentCommittee of the Senate.
Weworked as hard and fast as we could.
There were over 500 witness slipsopposing the bill.
Thank you every-one.
We showed up for the LocalGovernment Committee and it wasannounced that SB3076 would not becalled, a sigh of relief was had by all.
We had beaten them and they knewit.
Springfield is a place where billsnever die until the end of theSession.
Sure enough, SB3076 suddenlypopped up in the ExecutiveCommittee.
It had been reassignedwith a one hour posting notice.
Thatmeans the opposition only has onehour to find out about it, lobbyagainst it, get witness slips filed, pre-pare for testimony, and be in
Committee.
Most of that can't bedone of course, which is the idea. The Executive Committee is a differ-ent animal.
The Executive Committee isowned and operated by the leaders of the House and Senate, Mr. Madiganand Mr. Cullerton - period.
If theywant a controversial bill out, no mat-ter what, the Executive Committee iswhere it goes.
SB3076 passed out of Executive Committee, 9 to 5.
SB3076 is now on Second Readingand the bill can be amended, if neces-sary.
The bill can then go to ThirdReading, and after that, can be votedon.
As you can see, this stuff canmove pretty fast.
That is why youhave to be ready.
In the last thirtydays of Session, I urge you to checkfor alerts several times a day.
The Legislature is out the week of April 25th but will be back in Sessionon
May 3rd. May 3rd until May
31st
doesn't seem that long, but in theIllinois Legislature, it is an eternity.Days are often like weeks.
Pleasecontact your State Senators in theirDistrict offices and tell them youoppose SB3076.
When they are backin Springfield this month, please con-
tact them to tell them that you opposeSB3076.
Leave a message!Remember their legislative assistantscan't speak for them but are there totake messages for them.
Be polite. We will keep you informed on
SB3076.Right now the Illinois Legislaturehas 200 bills that pertain to firearms, shooting and hunting now show amosaic of where the anti-SecondAmendment crowd would like to go.The now dead SB2846 which wouldhave banned animal trophies is anexample.
SB2846 would have drivendeer hunting into the ground quicklyfollowed by turkey hunting.
Anothersuch bill which is still alive is
SB2143.SB2143 would ban the sale of bob-
cat pelts.
This is what I call a "bridgehead" bill.
If the sale of bobcat peltscan be banned, why not muskrat, rac-coon and other species?
The anti-hunting movements in Illinois andaround the country are gettingstronger and are very well funded. All hunters need to join in the fight topreserve their right to hunt.
Being amember of the Illinois State Rifle
Association is one way to do that.I want you all to brace yourself
because I have to expose a shockingtruth about Hillary Clinton.
Please sit down before you readthis because I don't want to beresponsible should you get lightheaded, get the "vapors" or succumbto emotional shock and fall down. Here it comes - Hillary Clinton hasbeen caught in a lie about guns -again.
Hillary stated that the majori-
ty of crime guns used in New Yorkcame from Vermont.
The problem isthat BATFE statistics show thatbetween 2006 and 2012 exactlyZERO crime guns came fromVermont. Since 2012, only 55 crimeguns used in New York in any type of

crime, came from Vermont.
I suppose Hillary has missed her Liars Anonymousmeetings again because of her heavy campaign schedule. Understandable.
In one of my terrorist watch updates it was pointed out that Nation States(countries) have borders, tax their people and have a common language with afew exceptions; ISIS does all of these things.
The United States does thesethings with varying degrees of proficiency.
We are really good in the taxing
area for example, but maybe not so hot in other areas. It sort of averages out, Isuppose.Speaking of borders:
When you were in school I am positive your highly pro-ficient history teacher taught you about WW I and WW II.
One of those les-sons undoubtedly dealt with Benito Mussolini and his role in world history.Mussolini was the head of the Italian Socialist Party but was thrown out.Mussolini loved his Italy but was thrown out of the Italian Socialist Partybecause he wanted to enter WW I and defend his beloved Italy.
Socialists yousee, don't believe in borders.
Do you see any modern parallels?
Just askingMonday, March 21, 2016, the Supreme Court of the United States held that
the Second Amendment applies to all instruments that constitute bearable arms. The decision of the court was unanimous.
The case, known as Caetano v
Massachusetts, dealt with a Massachusetts law that prohibited stun guns.
Thelaw was upheld by the Massachusetts Supreme Court, but was overturned bythe United States Supreme Court.
In the decision ordering the law to be vacat-ed, the court stated that the Second Amendment applied to arms that were notin existence at the time of the founding.
In short, that means that the AR15 anda variety of other arms are now protected. Before we all begin dancing in thestreets, remember we will be forced to slog through the courts, case by case.Remember that the next President will replace as many as four or five SupremeCourt Justices, so that may change.Talk about a long reach!
Congratulations to David Sigale, who represents theISRA
and Second Amendment Foundation in several cases, for winning a casein the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
CNMI is part
of the United States that many people do not even know about.Saipan is part of the island group that was acquired during the island hoppingcampaign against the Japanese, during WWII.
CNMI passed a law that made itIllegal to own a handgun or import ammunition, rendering people unable todefend themselves.
In 2008, David Radich, a U.S. Navy Veteran, and his wife,Li-Rong moved to Saipan.
In 2010, Li-Rong was home alone when invadersbroke in and savagely beat her. Because of the CNMI law, they were defense-less against such attacks.
Radich and the Second Amendment Foundation filedsuit against the CNMI law and won.
Judge Ramona V. Manglona struck downthe law as unconstitutional - another nail in the coffin of the anti-gun move-ment.
Thank you David Sigale! The latest numbers are in from the Illinois State Police.
The great news is that
FOID Cards are over 2,000,000; 2,004,164 to be exact.
The number of FOID'ssends a powerful message to the political establishment.
To put that number in
perspective, Governor Rauner received approximately 1,700,000 votes in thelast election.
The number of ICCL's stands at 159,960.The 145th NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits Convention will be held in
Louisville, Kentucky, on
May 20, 21, 22. If you have never been to an NRAAnnual Meeting, you should go to the one in Louisville. The
ISRA
will haveand
I hope to see you there. The next Annual meeting will be held in Atlanta
Georgia on April 28-30, 2017.IGOLD 2016 was a wet one.
We were greeted by a cold drizzly rain in themorning with various spurts of downpours from time to time.
Despite the rain, the enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Prairie Capital Convention Center to hearupdates from NRA lobbyists Shannon Alford, Todd Vandermyde, and
ISRAlobbyists Valinda Rowe, and myself.
Massad Ayoob, legendary firearmsinstructor, and Chip Eberhart from the NRA ads (I'm the NRA and I amFreedom's Safest Place), both gave rousing speeches.
Every speaker made youproud to be a gun owner and an
ISRA
member.Although the drizzle continued at parade time, it did not matter.
Our Chief Parade Marshall, Tom Shafer, did a fabulous job (as usual) leading off theparade on time.
These were not the sunshine patriots that people talk about,
these marchers were the hard core Second Amendment people that win skir-mishes, battles and wars - just what we need.
After arriving at the Capitol, we shortened the length of the speeches at theLincoln Steps because of the weather and went into the Capitol to lobby our leg-islators.
At 3:30, in the rotunda, we expanded the rally, with over 20 legislatorsspeaking. It was super.
I would be remiss if I did not mention all the great peo-ple who helped unload, set up, organize, sell memberships and merchandise, tear down, clean up and do all the things that make a successful operation.Everyone is important to make a successful operation.
I want everyone to knowhow much I appreciate you.
The Second Amendment is under a well-financed broad based attack.
I wantto assure you the Illinois State Rifle Association will not only fight to preserve
your rights, but fight to expand them.
It takes members to do that.
If you arenot a member, please join today. Freedom is not a spectator sport.

THE DRONE SNIPERPart 1
My name is Keith Kendal and Igraduated from Bradley University
and went to work in downtownPeoria, Illinois in the CaterpillarHeadquarters’ building. I was anartist of sorts, and ended up being atechnical writer and illustrator forCaterpilla r. It was a boring job, thepeople I worked for were very niceand they paid me rather well. Thetruth is I wanted to really write andtechnical writing was just flat outboring to me.
I stayed there for 10 years but
during that time I wrote a lot of fic-tion pieces that ended up in maga-zines. The reason I am bringing
by Norman V. Kelly
this up is because one of the leadelectrical engineers, a neat guy anda damn genius, Erick Wright wasthe star of that little department. We became friends, never reallyhung out together outside work, but
at work we talked a lot. He seemedto have everything a human beingcould have from looks, education, personality, money, and a beautifulwife. Sadly she died and that justabout destroyed him…hell, maybeit did. The truth is he was admiredand liked by everyone he ever met.
Once I left Caterpillar we e-mailed each other maybe a dozentimes a year and I saw him at HamRadio shows, but that was it. One
of the guys I worked with said thathe seemed to dissolve within him-self and retired the moment he waseligible and he never saw himagain. Erick sold his house andmoved out to a farm nearPrinceville and virtually became ahermit. Every time I saw him at oneof those model airplane and Hamradio shows we promised eachother that we would get together, but we never did.
After taking my first job inDenver as a newspaper reporter, Iwent into TV a bit, wrote a few
books and made a pretty good namefor myself. I managed to put ourtwo kids through college and cameback to Peoria to live. We bought ahouse and I took a job as estimatorand technical artist for a big con-
struction firm in town. I led a pret-ty boring life most of the time, butmy writing let me drift off on a fewfantasies, nothing sensational butwe seemed to thrive here in Peoria.
A SHOCKING MURDERThat pretty much summed up the
local newspaper’s headline and of course the local TV and radio sta-tions had a couple of day’s newsout of that headline. Hell, we have
shootings in Peoria and by now it ishard to be shocked by any of thatnews. Usually it was gang relatedand a few days later some kid wasarrested and we waited for the nextmurder to happen virtually in thesame manner. Now we are onlytalking about maybe a dozen a yearso this is not Chicago, Illinois byany means. What made this murder‘shocking’ was beyond me, and Iam a fan of mysteries of all kinds,
especially concerning a humanbeing.
All my life I have been a very
athletic person and ran thousandsof miles over the years. We have awonderful bike, walking and run-ning trail here in Peoria called TheRock Island Trail. The last 5 yearsI take my early walk now traveling
4-miles every morning on that trailbefore breakfast. It is a perfect set-ting, with shade trees and a longblacktop trail that runs for miles.
The folks are friendly and almostall of them greet each person asthey pass. So when the body of aman in his 50’s was found lyingdead in the middle of that trail, per-haps ‘shocking’ was exactly theword to use. I read every wordabout the murder, and later even
got a copy of the police report. Iwent to the coroner’s inquest andtalked to a police detective that Ihad grown up with. DetectiveMike Remington told me what Ihad already known that there wasnot one single clue to report. Noone on that trail had heard a shot, nor did they report anything at allworth analyzing.
It was the month of June and theguess was it was shortly after sun
up that the man had been shot.Police canvassed the entire areatwice because there are dozens and

dozens of homes along that trail.Well, the truth is all we see are theback of those houses and the back-yards. They checked about barkingdogs, they pleaded for clues fromthe people that used that trail and
the family of the man offered$10,000 for a solid clue. Theyturned up nothing. The coroner’sinquest gave a lot of details aboutthe victim and the TV stations cov-ered the hearing. They interviewedmy detective friend Mike, and themedical examiner told us that theman was shot twice in the back;both 9 millimeter slugs entered theman’s heart. The doctor said thathe died very quickly.
The funeral was held, and amonth later two shootings on thesouth side of Peoria took every-one’s attention. The police contin-ued to work on the trail killing try-ing to find some motive as to whyhe was shot but they found nothing. They used metal detectors lookingfor 9mm shell casings but foundnone. I kept all my notes and did ashort outline for a s tory, but I neverfollowed up on it. Murders are
never really closed, but hell, policeare guided by clues, lab results andtipsters; but they had nothing. Irecorded everything I heard on theradio, TV and newspapers andthought I might write a story or
even a book on this case especiallyif it ever happened again. Well…itdid.
ANOTHER BODY SHOWS UPThere is what…one railroad
track active here in Peoria County?I don’t know but I do know that atone time 14 railroad companies hadmajor offices here in Peoria andwho in Peoria did not love the trainthat ran from Peoria to Chicago? But, that was a long time ago. There is a golf course here calledKellogg Golf Course and off to thewest are the tracks that train runson. I rarely saw it but the long, mournful horn is one of my
favorite sounds and I heard italmost every time I played golf there. It is farmland way out thereand I think it was Radnor Townshipthat my dad used to tell me was amajor watering spot for those oldtrains. He used to go there with hisfriends and fish in that lake andhop those damn freight trains.God, the way he told it made mewish I was as old as he was. Heseemed to have such great stories
about Peoria, but hey…I grew uphere and had very little in the wayof stories to tell anyone. I guessthat is why I became a writer…youthink? Anyway, back to the story.
A farmer driving his tractor in a
field next to the tracks spotted aman lying alongside the track andhe drove over to see what waswrong. Well, the farmer soon dis-covered that the young man wasdead. Well today’s farmer has a
cell phone and he quickly got thePeoria Co Sheriff’s people outthere and another headline was cre-ated. Once again there were 2,9mm slugs in the back with onetearing into the heart. It was déjàvu all over again to quote Yogi. However this murder was eerilysimilar to the trail murder and folksreally began to talk…and I meantalk.
The local talk shows on WMBD
and a few others really began torun with this story and of course asearch went out for ‘experts’ togive their stories. Roger Monroeon his pod cast had some detectivesand other official people on and thetheories flew… I can tell you that. One FBI guy said that it has to beat least 3k i l l i n g sb e f o r ethey con-
sidered itto be as e r i a lkiller outt h e r es o m e -
where. Let’s face it murder isexciting; it has filled billions of book pages and made careers for alot of writers like me. Needless tosay I got out all my notes, pulledthe story up on my computer and
for a month added everything Icould to it. It just might happenthat I had a book here and all I hadto do was see how itdeveloped…really, it was that sim-ple.
This second murder brought in aleast 6 reporters from places likeSpringfield and Chicago. We havea lot of little towns in a lot of coun-ties around us, and they too camein for the coroner’s inquest and
tried to get as many quotes as pos-sible from local officials. The TVcameras brought it all to us and itwas indeed a pretty exciting time.

Well, just like the trail murderthe talk slowed down, the coroner’sInquest was over, the young manwas buried and weeks slippedaway. The rewards were up overthirty thousand and Crime Stoppers
offered three thousand dollars for asubstantial clue. The net result of all that effort was a big fat zero.
Of course the police are alwaysworking on a murder case so theysay; I mean of course the homicidedept. They had everything thestate’s attorney could possiblywant from ballistics to DNA but sowhat? The state’s attorney needsevidence to take to the grand jury, awitness, a suspect, a person of
interest, hell something but he hadnothing. So interest in the caseslipped away; of course the vic-tim’s family and loved ones never
forget and their grief never ends.Anyone who thinks there is some-thing called ‘Closure’ for the vic-tim’s loved ones needs to do a lotmore research.
MURDER IN THE FALLThat smell of fear I mentionedwas long gone. Every morning thatI walked the trail during that earlyfall was an adventure in makingsure I stayed in my half of the trailas bikers flew by me with a politeyell… “On your left.” Andzip…they were gone. The walkers,me included were alone as well. Ilike to get at my first mile marker just about the t ime the sun r ises and
the rising sun always pepped meup.
I walked all the way to BishopStreet before I made my turn to

don’t think I saw one bike riderthat did not have a friend ridingalong side. The county sheriff tookan interest in the railroad track andthe police chief gave the folks that‘be alert and aware’ talk and folksin the town talked about getting aconcealed weapon. I remember atthe time there were just over142,000 legally armed citizens inIllinois so being a bad guy was get-ting to be a bit tougher. The ISRA

walk back to Northmoor Roadwhere I parked in the parking lotbehind the old IDOT building. Ilove airplanes and everything thatflew near me always got my atten-tion. I heard it before I saw it but
it was indeed a motorized thing.Off to my left I thought I saw oneof those homemade little airplanes. You know they were really thething not long ago. It seemedawfully small but as I stared in itsdirection I lost it behind a tree.Maybe 15 minutes later I heardsomething that sounded like a shot;in fact there were two of them. They were not muffled but theywere quite a long way off. Hell, I
have heard that sort of thing beforebut since the shootings everythingwas suspicious to me. I kept walk-ing.
Over Knoxville Ave is a verynice pedestrian bridge that wewalkers are lucky to have and fromthe top of that bridge a lot of us juststop to look down at the traffic andthen move on. From the north endof that bridge I have about a half mile to go to my car. As I stepped
off the bridge I heard a scream andthen another one. It was comingfrom up the trail and I broke into atrot heading that way. By the timeI got to the spot where the screamcame from there were 3 ladiesstanding around looking down at aman or woman lying on the track. Ispoke to one of the women as I sawthe body of a young woman lyingon the track.
“Did she get hit by a bike? “ I got
no answer. I bent over being care-ful not to touch her. She was lyingin a crumpled position and I couldsee blood all over the back of herrunning shirt.
“Did you call an ambulance andthe police?” The tall blonde noddedher head. “Yes… I can hear a sirennow. I told them to park in theIDOT parking lot.” I nodded andtold them I would go up to theentrance and guide them back.
They backed away from the bodyholding on to each other’s hand.

I was grateful when my goodfriend stopped by the shop to invitemy son on a youth turkey hunt. Myson Coltan was in the shop at thetime. School was out for Easterbreak. I mentioned the turkey huntto Coltan and he seemed really
excited. So we made the plans forthe upcoming weekend.
The eighty acre farm in PeoriaCounty is full of game. Throughthe years my friend has harvesteddeer, squirrel, and turkey. Theturkey population has really beendoing well over past several years.I usually see a few or some sort of sign every time I’m invited out tohis property.

April meansdifferent things todifferent people. For me and manyof my friends andfamily it meansturkey seasonbegins. We waitand prepare formonths getting ready for early morn-
ings and gobbling toms. It is a greattime of year for kids who love tohunt.
So it was last weekend for my goodfriend and hunting buddy KevinBrunstein and his friend Jim Ervin. These Morgan County hunters weretaking their two boys turkey huntingduring the 2016 Illinois Youth TurkeySeason. Collin Brunstein and WesErvin were going to team-up and tryto get a gobbler in close enough to
get a shot at.Jim had scouted this property and
had a great idea of where the birdsmight roost and what they might do
once they hit the ground. He had ablind in place large enough to com-fortably let both dads sit right behindtheir respective hunters.
The foursome got into their blindplenty early and as quietly as a group
this size could be. As the pre-dawnaction began there were birds gob-bling in three different directions.Because Wes got first shot on theirlast hunting trip together, first shotthat day belonged to Collin. Theydecided the closest tom, about 100-yards out, would be called “Collin’sBird”.
As the light improved Collin couldsee his bird gobbling on the roost. This roost was not at all where Jim
had expected the birds to be. In fact, the tom gobbling over the levee infront of them was where he hadscouted them. At any rate, Collin’sturkey was the first one on theground. He glided out into an opencorn field, gobbled and went directlyback into the timber.
Kevin called and the tom respond-ed immediately. He appeared andapproached the decoys from a veryawkward direction for Collin to get a
shot. In full strut the huge black gob-bler tried to intimidate the decoys. After several minutes of putting onan incredible show the bird finally

made its way in front of the younghunter’s barrel. Collin dispatched thebig tom with a full load of #5’s.
Through the expected excitementKevin kept the group in the blindquiet. He knew there were othertoms gobbling close enough to playtheir game. He just kept calling andthey kept hearing the occasional gob-
ble. About 15-munites after Collin’stom stopped flopping a half-dozenhens pitched out and landed in the
decoy spread. What a great place tobe.
It was not long before a gobblecame from the levee and a secondtom stepped out right where Jim hadpredicted all along. He was about 80-

yards out and as soon as he saw thehens and the strutting jake decoy hewasted no time crossing the field toget to the flock. When the bird gotwithin range Wes was in a similar sit-uation as Collin was just 20-minutes
earlier. He was looking out of thewrong window in the blind to get ashot.
The gobbler got so close so fastthat switching windows was just notan option. The giant bird was spittingand drumming and passed a mere 5-yards in front of them. After passingthe blind in full strut the tom turnedhis back to the blind to face thedecoys. Wes quickly switched win-dows and just as quickly took his
shot. There was just too little distancefrom the end of Wes’s shotgun andthe gobbler that the young huntershot by his target’s head and missed. The tom did not spook from the shot.He continued to interact with thedecoys. But when he heard the soundof Wes pumping his shotgun he didreact and was leaving the scene whenWes dumped him. The two boys nowhad trophy spring gobblers lying
dead just a few feet apart. I can onlyimaging the celebration that thentook place.
Do not ever pass up the chance totake a kid hunting or fishing. Passingalong these traditions is more impor-tant than you can even imagine. I amtickled for Wes and Collin and Iapplaud Kevin and Jim for takingthem. Contrats to all four of you.
This coming weekend I will beMissouri for their youth turkey hunt.
I will be participating with HopeOutdoors as they host 15 underprivi-leged kids on guided turkey hunts. Iwill be anxious to bring you the high-lights of that trip!

The Meandering Murray’s
By Bob Murray b i g m u r 2 @ a o l . c o m
Tackle Box Archeologist I’ll actually have a trip to write
about for next month’s issue of ASO.I’m in the midst of prepping for a tripdown to Missouri the second weekendin May to do some trout fishing witha couple brothers-in-law, a nephew
and a family friend. The friend is oneof those friends that so many of ushave. You know the kind. They arefamily but have a different last name.
He and I are the only ones that havenot been to this place before wherethey seed the stream with rainbowtrout every year. I have fished troutout west and do know they are fun tocatch and for sure good to eat. Theydon’t keep well and don’t freeze welleither, so we’ll be eating some there
and having a fish grilling party as
soon as we get back. (How’s that forconfidence?)
So, here’s why I’m telling you allthis. I have not unpacked my ownfishing gear since we came back toIllinois. I always thought we were
quite organized with our gear, whichwas until I started going thru it lastweek. I’ll blame it on packing from aboat that had been filled over thecourse of years with a vast assortmentof bass and crappie gear and embel-lished with a reasonable amount of salt water gear and baits.
As I sat in the garage forcing frozenzippers open and working on otherfasteners that I don’t remember beingbroken. I have found stuff that
brought back memories of great
catches and great people with whom Ihad fished. I found stuff that I have noidea how I got it or where it camefrom. I have a whole tackle box fullof line that should have precludedever having to buy line again. But you
surely know I had to go to the storeand buy new line and light leaders thatI will tie with these itty bitty hooksthat truly challenge my essentialtremor, a condition that causes myhands to shake which is a ton of funwhen tying tiny hooks or eating hotsoup.
It’s a comfy chair I am in sitting inthe middle of my two car garage hop-ing that another section of insulationdoesn’t fall down while I’m playing
tackle box archeologist. It did passthru my mind as to whether I couldhave a surviving southern blackwidow spider amongst some of therusted and or melting gear. So farthere isn’t any. They must have heardabout Illinois winters.
Actually most of the gear is in pret-ty good condition considering it’sbeen in storage for three winters. Some things like jarred baits andsome soft plastics are in the trash, but
most crank/stick etc. baits will onlyneed a couple of licks on a hooksharpener and they’ll be as good asnew.
A tip for a quick gear refurb is agood spraying down with that won-
derful lubricantand bait spraycalled WD-40and wiped off witha soft cloth returnsdirty rods and reels
to passable condi-tion, in an instant. It’s better than anycleaner becausewhatever scent itleaves doesn’toffend fish. If youdon’t know italready, WD hasshark liver oil as akey ingredient andactually is great for
spraying on live orartificial baits, as afish attractant.
Since this is a short trip the onlygear that I’m going to take is what canfit in my fly fishing vest. Yes… the flyfishing vest. Damn; if that thing didn’tshrink hanging in a closet for thattime! It’s a good thing it has a littletab that extends over the zipper andconnects the two sides or I’d be fish-ing out of a hunting pack.
Next month I’ll give you a recap of how many trout we killed and howmuch fun we had doing it. I willremember that I am the other guy andI WILL Keep it clean out there.
Happy spring Ya’all!
