OCCUPATION: Retired bilingual shop teacher at Rio Grande High and Polk Middle School. FAMILY: Wife, Lila, and grown children, Sam and Jessica. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: None listed. POLITICAL/GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE: Have never held political office. I owe no political favors! 1. Everyone I talk to tells me APS is way too top heavy, and I strongly agree. I don’t think people are worth over $100,000 a year. We must make everyone accountable. We need more teachers in the classroom (which would lower pupil-teacher ratio). 2. My stance was for the board to draw the line in the sand and have our schools funded adequately by our Legislature. As a board, we will direct APS financial officers to look into every corner. 2. In addi- tion, I would also recommend that the superintendent look at department and administrative consolidation. 2. I do not have any information about Mr. Brooks’ goals, objec- tives, or professional improve- ment plans for this year. I would give him an incomplete at this point. 3. Yes, as long there is a rigor- ous process in place that will develop objective criteria for determining quality and that there are measurements in place to determine student per- formance and academic growth. 4. No. CLARA PEÑA AGE: 55 EDUCATION: University of New Mexico, Central New Mexico Com- munity College. OCCUPATION: Home Health- care by Heri- tage Healthcare FAMILY: No children. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES:  Worked with lawmakers to help create a park; co-founder of a charter school; helped create our present fire station; worked on the first and second phases of the widening of Isleta; worked with School on Wheels to develop the Child Development Center and to seek funding for school landscaping; presently working on getting chess tables into schools, community centers and parks. POLITICAL/GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE: Four-time Republi- can candidate for House District 14, 2004-2010; Republican candidate Bernalillo County Commission, 2000; candidate for Albuquerque Technical Voca- tional Institute governing board, 1997. 1. Important to pull an audit, to see how money is being spent, duplication and waste, not filling vacated positions, hiring freeze, cut school discretionary fund by a certain percentage, reduce overtime, consolidate some school personnel and services. 2. B. There are a number of issues that have taken place that could have been prevented; such as “Rio’s” scheduling problem, budget problems and preventive maintenance school problems. Brooks inherited a number of problems which could have been prevented with foresight. 3. Academic growth which takes into account new knowledge and skills could be a combined element for both pay for per- formance and knowledge and skilled-based plans. 4. Not sure. An audit of the school district can explain where the district stands financially, towards a split. The explosion of charter schools and alternative schools (public schools) is one reason to look into a change. 5. No, never have been the sub-  ject of any state or federal tax lien. 6. No. 7. No. JAY ZOOK AGE: 46 EDUCATION: Bachelor’s in organizational management, Ashford Univer- sity, 2011 OCCUPATION: Retired Navy bomb squad, currently Navy employee testing new technologies for the Depart- ment of Defense. FAMILY: Married 21 years with four daughters, three of which are in APS School now. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: Involved with connecting parents to schools in my community, church, American Legion. POLITICAL/GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE: No political experience. 1. I would recommend we use the books from this year versus buying new books for next year. I would also look at state-man- dated APS testing requirements. Both could be big cost-savers. 2. Overall, a B. Because the teachers are not dealt with on the same playing field, you could find yourself comparing apples to oranges. 4. Given that less than 1 percent of the APS budget is central admin- istration, what school-based cuts would you make and what other measures would you take to balance the budget? 2.
