Thus, today we are confronted with an evolutionary crisis, a crisis of consciousness. This crisis is a major source of the current societal predicament. This is a crisis that we created, and we are responsible for acting upon it. We can face the challenge of this responsibility by attaining the will and capability of conscious and purposeful evolution

The human race

The human race has profoundly changed the evolutionary process. Our unlimited capacity for learning and the explosive rate at which we produce knowledge and artifacts and create systems have had an extraordinary impact on evolution. The question that now confronts us is: “for what purpose are we going to use this unlimited capacity and our collective creative power?” We can mobilize this capacity and power

to create a better future and give a hopeful

direction to our evolution.

This, however, is dependent upon the development of

evolutionary consciousness and the attainment of a will of conscious evolution

evolution the most advanced state of existence is human consciousness.

It is best manifested in those who are most developed in terms of their relationship to others and in their ability to interact harmoniously with all else in their sphere of life.

Its highest form is ‘conscious evolution’ which enables us to collaborate actively with the evolutionary process.

Salk(1983) says that evolutionary consciousness can motivate action toward ‘conscious evolution’, by which we can guide our future.

evolutie in de meest geavanceerde staat van bestaan is het menselijk bewustzijn. Het best tot uiting bij degenen die het best ontwikkeld zijn in hun relatie met anderen en in hun vermogen om harmonieus inter actie aan te gaan met al het andere in hun sfeer van het leven. Zijn hoogste vorm is 'bewuste evolutie ‘

die ons in staat stelt om samen te werken actief met het evolutionaire proces.

Salk (1983) zegt dat evolutionair bewustzijn “actie” kan motiveren in de richting van 'bewuste evolutie', waarmee we onze toekomst kunnen leiden.


Conscious evolution enables us to use the creative power to guide our systems and our society toward the fulfillment of their potential.

Laszlo (1987) highlight sour evolutionary responsibility as he says: ‘The evolution of our societies, and therewith the future of our species, is now in our hands.

Only by becoming conscious of evolution can we make evolution conscious’ (p. 122).

Bewuste evolutie stelt ons in staat om de creatieve kracht te gebruiken om onze systemen en onze samenleving te begeleiden in de richting van de vervulling van hun potentieel.

Laszlo (1987) hoogtepunten onze evolutionaire verantwoordelijkheid als hij zegt:

'De evolutie van onze samenlevingen, en daarmee de toekomst van onze soort, is nu in onze handen. Alleen door zich bewust te zijn van de evolutie kunnen we evolutie bewust maken '(p. 122).


Conscious evolution is enabled by ‘self-reflective consciousness ’and it is activated by ‘creating consciousness’(Banathy, 1993a).

Self-reflective consciousness is a process by which individuals, groups, organizations and societies contemplate and make presentations of their perceptions of the world, and their understanding of their place in the world, in their individual and collective minds.

Maps & representations

These representations are developed on the basis of values we hold and the ideas we have about how the world works, leading to the creation of a cognitive map of ‘what is’. Cognitive maps are developed, confirmed, elaborated, tested, disconfirmed, changed, and are redrawn. They are ‘alive’. These maps affect our behavior and our behavior affects the maps.

deze voorstellingen worden ontwikkeld op basis waarden die wij vasthouden en de ideeën die we hebben over hoe de wereld werkt, wat leidt tot de oprichting van een cognitieve kaart van 'wat is'.

Cognitieve kaarten zijn ontwikkeld, bevestigd, uitgewerkt, getest, ontkracht, veranderd, en zijn opnieuw getekend.

Ze zijn 'leven'. Deze kaarten beïnvloeden ons gedrag en ons gedrag invloed op de kaarten.


Creating Consciousness

The genesis of creating consciousness is self reflection that brings forth aspirations and change of consciousness.

It is a process by which individuals, groups, organizations and societies envision images of ‘what should be’.

This creating thrust is based on the belief, that while the future is influenced by the past and present .it is not determined by what was or what is.

It remains open to conscious and purposeful intervention that can be guided by an evolutionary image of the future

Het ontstaan van het creëren van bewustzijn is zelfreflectie dat aspiraties en verandering van bewustzijn voortbrengt.

Het is een proces waarbij individuen, groepen, organisaties en samenlevingen beelden “envision”van 'wat zou moeten zijn'.

Deze gecreëerde stuwkracht is gebaseerd op de overtuiging dat terwijl, de toekomst wordt beïnvloed door het verleden en heden, het niet wordt bepaald door wat was of wat is.

Het blijft open tot bewuste en doelgerichte

interventie die kan worden geleid door een evolutionair beeld van de toekomst.


Hoe en wat?

A representation of that image is the normative cognitive map of a desired future, which we can create individually and collectively by design.

Een voorstelling van deze afbeelding is de normatieve cognitieve kaart van een gewenste toekomst, die we individueel kunnen creëren en collectief door het te gaan ontwerpen.

enables us to: give direction to our individual

The source of change in social systems

The greatest source of change in social systems is the process of learning.

It is this source that we have to activate in order to attain conscious evolution and acquire evolutionary competence through evolutionary learning.

Evolutionary learning is first explored here in the context of current practices in education.

It will be shown that we face a major evolutionary task in education itself, namely, the redesign of the educational agenda so that it can engender the acquisition of evolutionary competence through evolutionary learning (Banathy, 1987).

De grootste bron van verandering in sociale systemen is het proces van leren.

Het is deze bron die we activeren om de bewuste evolutie te bereiken evolutionaire bekwaamheid te verwerven door het evolutionaire leren.

Evolutionaire leren is hier voor het eerst verkend in de context van de huidige praktijken in het onderwijs. Men zal zien dat we geconfronteerd zijn nu met een belangrijke evolutionaire taak in het onderwijs zelf, namelijk, de herinrichting van de educatieve agenda dus dat het de overname gaat zijn van evolutionaire competentie door evolutionaire leren (Banathy, 1987).

A major hindrance to the development

A major hindrance to the development of evolutionary competence is inherent in our current practice of education, which focuses on‘ maintenance learning’.

(Botnik, 1979)

It involves the acquisition of fixed outlooks, methods and rules of dealing with known events and recurring situations.

Facing massive societal changes and transformations, today we still promote al ready established ways of working and living.

Een belangrijke belemmering voor de ontwikkeling van evolutionaire competentie is inherent aan onze huidige praktijk van het onderwijs, die zich richt op 'Onderhoudende leren'

(Botnik, 1979). het gaat om de verwerving van

vaste opvattingen, methoden en regels van het omgaan met bekende evenementen en terugkerende situaties.

Geconfronteerd met enorme maatschappelijke veranderingen en transformaties, promoten we toch nog al diezelfde manieren van werken en leven die zijn opgericht.

Evolutionary learning enables us to cope with change and complexity, renew our perspectives, and redesign our systems, often reorganizing them at higher levels of complexity.

Evolutionary learning empowers us to anticipate and face unexpected situations.

Thus evolutionary leadership is a call for participation in the most important task of our time: to innovate a future of peace and abundance in partnership with all the living systems of our planet Earth.

Het maakt niet uit hoe krachtig deze manier van denken is, er is meer dan de taak van katalyserende evolutionaire transformatie naar levens-bevestigende, toekomst creërende en kansen vergrotende realiteiten.

Zo,n evolutionair leiderschap is een oproep voor deelname aan de belangrijkste taak van onze tijd: het innoveren van een toekomst van vrede en overvloed in samenwerking met alle levende systemen van onze planeet Aarde.
