d’una va fer un bot

i el cap li va anar a

parar de dret contra

un fanal.

It was a Saturday at the end of May and Laura was with her friends from the Girl Guides on a special mission: looking for stagnant water to stop the tiger mosquito from multiplying; in other words, getting rid of the stagnant water from the places where their larvae are likely to grow. Suddenly, she jumped up and banged her head straight into a lamppost.

‘Ow! That really hurt! Can you believe it?!’, exclaimed Laura, as a big bump started to protrude from her forehead.

‘Well, Laura, you jumped up so much it looked like you wanted to knock that lamppost over.’

‘Well, actually, she did nearly knock it over,’ joked Abidine, another Girl Guide. ‘Why did you jump like that?’

‘My mobile started vibrating in my back pocket and it made me jump! For a

minute it felt like a strange insect had found its way into my trouser

pocket.’

‘But what are you doing with your mobile? We’re not supposed to bring them.’

‘Laura is: she’s the only who’s allowed in case they need her urgently to go and help out with some research,’ explained Ainhoa to Biel.

—Ai, ai! Quin cop que m’he fumut. Serà possible! —va exclamar la

Laura, mentre un prominent bony s’instal·lava al seu front.

—Noia, és que has fet un bot que semblava que et volguessis menjar

el fanal.

—De fet, Biel, una mica sí que se l’ha menjat —va bromejar l’Abidine,

un altre company escolta—. Però per què has fet aquest salt?

—És que m’ha sonat el mòbil que tenia amb vibrador a la butxaca del

darrere, i m’he espantat! Per un moment m’ha semblat com

si m’hagués entrat un bitxo no identificat a la butxaca

dels pantalons.

—Però què fas amb mòbil? Si no en podíem

portar.

—La Laura sí, ella és l’única que té permís per si

la necessiten urgentment perquè participi en alguna

recerca —va explicar l’Ainhoa a en Biel.

—Era una trucada, però amb l’ensurt i el cop no he estat capaç d’agafar-la. M’han

deixat un missatge al contestador. Vejam que diu... Ostres! Podrem investigar al

Sincrotró! Podrem investigar al Sincrotró! —va començar a cridar la Laura tota

emocionada, mentre anava a buscar corrents en Rafel, el seu cap de colla per

explicar-li-ho.

L’emoció de la Laura no era exagerada, no cada dia es podia investigar al Sincrotró.

A més, feia tan poc que l’havien inaugurat, n’havia sentit a parlar tant. Gairebé

l’estrenarien!

El Sincrotró era una

espècie de laboratori

gegantí, una instal·lació

colossal que generava

un tipus de llum molt

especial, la llum de

sincrotró, que és milions

de vegades més intensa

que la llum del Sol.

Amb aquest feix de llum

tan potent es poden

investigar moltes coses,

ja que depenent del que

s’hagi d’estudiar l’equip

de recerca en qüestió

pot seleccionar el tipus

de llum que necessita.

‘Someone was calling me, but I couldn't answer because I ended up banging my head. They left a message on the answer machine. Let’s see what it says… Wow! We’re going to investigate the Synchrotron! We’re going to investigate the Synchrotron!', Laura started shouting excitedly, while she went to find their team leader, Rafel, to be able to tell him.

Laura's excitement was no exaggeration; it was not every day you got the chance to go and investigate the Synchrotron. What’s more, it was not that long since it had been opened and it had been all the rage. They would be practically the first to try it out!

The Synchrotron was a kind of giant laboratory: a massive facility that generated a very special kind of light, the synchrotron light, which was thousands of times more intense than sunlight. All kinds of things could be investigated with this really intense light beam, because it allowed research teams to select the kind of light they needed depending on what it was they were studying.

Universitat Autònoma de

Barcelona (UAB), que és

molt a prop del Sincrotró,

així que es va oferir per

portar-la fins allà.

—Moltes gràcies per

portar-nos-hi, Rafel! Vaig

a trucar a en Joan per

explicar-li-ho i dir-li que

en un tres i no res el

passarem a recollir.

Laura was in luck, because Rafel had arranged to go and work on a project with another student from his university, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), which was really near to the Synchrotron, and so he offered to give them a lift.

‘Thanks a lot for taking us, Rafel! I’ll ring Joan to explain things and to tell him we'll be picking him up shortly.’

En Joan era amb la Irene, l’Ona i en Martí, unes companyes i un company de classe,

i les seves famílies visitant les mines prehistòriques de Gavà, i li va costar apaivagar el

crit d’emoció que li va sortir de l’ànima en sentir la nova recerca en la qual havien de

col·laborar.

—És una instal·lació científica fabulosa! Ja ho veureu, té forma de cargol gegant —va dir

en Rafel.

—Em sembla que fa uns cent vint metres de diàmetre i vint-i-sis mil metres quadrats.

Quina sort que teniu, de poder investigar a l’Alba! —va dir el seu amic, que també havien

recollit pel camí.

—I qui és l’Alba aquesta? —va preguntar innocentment en Joan, ja que encara no havien

tingut un moment d’intimitat perquè ell i la Laura poguessin posar en marxar els poders

màgics.

—Però com pot ser que no sapigueu que al Sincrotró li van posar de nom Alba? —va dir

l’amic d’en Rafel.

—És que la Laura i en Joan tenen un petit secret, ara, que em sembla que no ens

l’explicaran. Tenen poders màgics i es poden transformar en una investigadora i un

investigador de debò —li va explicar en Rafel, a qui la Laura havia explicat que havien fet la

promesa de guardar el secret.

—Que fort! A mi també m’agradaria tenir-ne.

—No n’hi ha per a tant —va voler treure importància fent broma en Joan—. Ens podem

transformar en una investigadora i un investigador de qualsevol disciplina científica però

només per quaranta-vuit hores.

—Quina enveja que em feu —va voler canviar de tema en Rafel, que no volia que el seu

amic aclaparés els dos infants perquè li expliquessin el secret dels poders màgics—.

A nosaltres encara ens queden uns anys d’estudiar a la universitat per poder tenir la

possibilitat d’investigar al Sincrotró Alba.

Joan was with some friends from their class, Irene, Ona and Martí, and their families, visiting the prehistoric mines in Gavà, and he had to make a special effort to stifle the cry of emotion that he was about to let out on hearing about the new research project they were being asked to collaborate on.

‘It’s a fantastic scientific facility! You’ll see. It’s in the shape of a giant snail,’ said Rafel.

‘I think it’s one hundred and twenty metres in diameter and twenty-six thousand square metres. You're lucky to be able to go and do research at Alba!’, said his friend, who they had picked up on the way.

‘And who is this Alba anyway?’, asked Joan, innocently, since he and Laura had still not had a moment to themselves to be able to activate their magic powers.

‘How can you not know that they called the Synchrotron "Alba"?’, asked Rafel’s friend, incredulously.

‘Well, you see, Laura and Joan have a little secret which I don’t think they’re going to share with us. They have magic powers, which means they can turn into real researchers,’ explained Rafel, who had been told by Laura about their promise to keep the secret.

‘Get out of here! I want some too!’

‘They're not that special,' joked Joan, trying to play down their powers. 'We can transform into researchers of any scientific discipline but only for forty eight hours.’

‘I am so jealous of you guys,’ said Rafel, trying to change the subject now so that his friend didn't try to make the two kids explain the secret of their magic powers. ‘The two of us will have to study at university for a few more years before we stand a chance of researching at the Alba Synchrotron.’

‘Don’t worry, Rafel, we’ll take some photos so you can get a feel for the place,’ joked Laura, making everyone burst out laughing.

‘They’ll never believe it when I tell them at Uni: a girl from my Guide’s group researching at the Synchrotron,’ said the team leader of Laura’s Girl Guide group with pride.

‘Do you know why they called it Alba? Because alba is the name of the first morning light in Catalan, which is “white” in Latin, and, as you well know, white light contains all the possible ranges of colours.’

Everyone agreed that they could not have chosen a more suitable name for the Synchrotron. Their journey had come to an end. Laura and Joan said their

goodbyes to the two students, promising to tell them all about the research they

were going to take part in.

But before going inside the Synchrotron, they needed to activate their magic powers.

—Tranquil, Rafel, que farem fotos perquè us pugueu anar fent a la idea —va bromejar la

Laura, i va fer que tots es posessin a riure.

—No s’ho creuran quan ho expliqui a la universitat: una noia de la meva colla investigant

al Sincrotró —va dir amb orgull el cap de la colla escolta de la Laura.

—Sabeu per què li van posar de nom Alba? Perquè «alba» és el nom de la primera llum

del matí, i en llatí vol dir ‘blanc’, i ja sabeu que la llum blanca conté tota la gamma de

colors.

Tothom va estar d’acord que no podien haver posat un nom més ideal al Sincrotró;

el viatge arribava a la fi. La Laura i en Joan es van acomiadar dels dos nois amb la

promesa que els explicarien fil per randa tota

la recerca en la qual

participarien.

Abans d’entrar al

Sincrotró, però, calia

que activessin els

poders màgics.

—Unim les nostres energies! —van dir les quatre vegades

necessàries perquè s’activessin els poders.

‘Combine our forces!’, they repeated the four times required to active the magic powers.’

—Estic tan emocionada, Joan...

—Però si encara no saps ni què investigarem, Laura.

—M’és igual! Tu saps què és poder investigar en una instal·lació que genera font de llum

de sincrotró? Recorda que els electrons van donant voltes a aquest cargol

gegantí fins que arriben a gairebé la

velocitat de la

llum, i després

els grups

de recerca

utilitzen la

llum que emet

per a les seves

investigacions.

—Ara em diràs

que de ben petita ja

havies demanat un sincrotró

per Reis, oi? Si no existien —va dir en Joan per picar-

la, però també estava molt emocionat de poder investigar al

Sincrotró.

—Seràs ase! Mai no ho vaig demanar per Reis, ni m’ho va cagar el tió, però

que sàpigues que el primer sincrotró per produir llum ja va començar a funcionar el

1977 als Estat Units.

—Que només feia broma! T’imagines un senyal de trànsit dins el tub del sincrotró que posi

«Prohibit circular a més velocitat que la llum»? —va dir en Joan, cosa que va fer riure la

Laura.

—Renoi, però haurien de fer els senyals molt grans, si no qualsevol els veu a tres-cents mil

quilòmetres per segon —li va respondre la Laura, seguint-li la broma.

‘I'm so excited, Joan… ‘But you still don’t know what it is we’re going to investigate, Laura.’ ‘I don’t care! Do you know what it means to be able to do research in a facility that

generates a source of synchrotron light? Remember that the electrons circulate around the giant snail until they almost

reach the speed of light, and then the research groups use the light produced for their own research projects.’ ‘Now you’re going to tell me that you asked the Three Wise Men for a synchrotron when you were little! But they didn't exist!’, said Joan, trying to wind her up, even though he was also excited about being able to research the Synchrotron.

‘You are a simpleton! I never asked the Three

Wise Men for anything, or Father Christmas for that matter,

but for your information the first synchrotron to produce light started to function in 1977 in the United States.’ ‘I was only joking! Can you imagine a traffic sign inside a synchrotron tube that says “circulating faster than the speed of light strictly forbidden”?’, said Joan, making Laura laugh. ‘Well, they’d have to make the signs pretty big or it'd be fairly difficult to spot them going at three hundred and thousand kilometres per second,’ answered Laura, taking up the joke.

Quan van entrar a recepció, de seguida els van conduir al despatx de direcció, on

els va atendre en Manel, el director del Sincrotró Alba, i l’Elena, la sotsdirectora,

que els van explicar el problema que tenien:

—Us hem demanat ajuda perquè hi ha quatre grups de recerca que estaven

investigant amb la nostra llum de sincrotró i s’han quedat mig penjats.

—La meitat han aconseguit arribar a l’aeroport del Prat, però els altres, a causa

d’un núvol de cendra volcànica, no han pogut agafar l’avió per venir.

—I ens han demanat ajuda perquè com que tenim tot l’any ple de grups

de recerca que volen

experimentar amb la llum de

sincrotró, no poden endarrerir

les seves recerques aquí.

—Així que, com que

sabem que sou molt bons

i polivalents, primer us hem

trucat a vosaltres. Quan

escolliu la recerca en la qual

col·laborareu intentarem

aconseguir personal per a les

altres recerques —va explicar

l’Elena, mentre la Laura i en

Joan s’omplien d’orgull.

On arrival at reception they were taken straight through to the manager’s office where they were attended by Manel, the director of the Alba Synchrotron, and Elena, the assistant director, who told them about their problem:

‘We’ve asked for your help because four research groups were conducting research with our synchrotron light but they’ve got a bit stuck.

Half of them have managed to get to Barcelona’s airport, but the others didn’t manage to get on the flight due to the volcanic ash cloud.’

‘They’ve asked us for help because they can’t delay their research here any longer because we’re busy all year round with research groups who want to experiment with our synchrotron light.’

‘So we decided to give you a call first, seeing that we know how you can turn your hands to anything. When you choose the research you’d like to collaborate with, we’ll try to find personnel for the other research projects,’ explained Elena, while Laura and Joan almost burst with pride.

—I de què tracten les recerques que necessiten personal investigador?

—Com us deia en són quatre, i podeu triar la que vulgueu. Però ara m’heu de

perdonar, l’Elena us ho acabarà d’explicar tot perquè jo haig de marxar: tinc una

reunió amb el comitè d’experts, que decideix quins projectes d’investigació poden

fer servir l’Alba per a les seves recerques.

—Hi ha un comitè de persones expertes que decideixen si els grups de recerca

que ho demanen poden emprar l’Alba i per quant de temps —els va explicar

abans que els donés temps a preguntar-ho—. Així

doncs, podeu escollir entre una recerca que estudia

una malaltia, un nou medicament, una de nous

materials o una de geologia que estudia els meteorits.

—La dels meteorits! —van decidir a l’instant els dos

infants.

—Hem vist que estaven descarregant un imant

enorme, ben bé devia fer més d’un metre de llargada.

Per a què el necessita el sincrotró? —va dir en Joan.

—Exactament és un electroimant d’un metre i mig de

llargària.

—Continuo sense veure per a què es necessiten els

imants —va insistir el noi.

—Pensa-hi una mica, Joan. El sincrotró és ple

d’electrons que van donant voltes i es van accelerant

fins a la velocitat de la llum, però necessitem els

imants perquè fan que la seva trajectòria es corbi i

emetin la llum cap endavant.

—O sigui que els imants són una mica com el volant dels cotxes.

‘And which research projects need researchers?’ ‘Well, as I was saying, there are four, and you can choose whichever one you want. But you’ll have to excuse me right now. Elena will finish explaining things as I've got to leave: I've got a meeting with the Board of Experts who are in charge of deciding which projects can use Alba for their research.’ ‘There’s a board of people who are experts who decide if the research groups who apply should be allowed to use Alba and for how long,’ he explained before they had time to

ask. ‘So, you're free to choose between a project that studies an illness, a new medication, one about new material, and one about geology that studies meteorites.’ ‘The one about meteorites!’, the two kids decided without hesitation. ‘We saw they were unloading an enormous magnet, it must have been over a metre long. What does the synchrotron need that for?’, asked Joan. ‘Exactly, it’s an electromagnet, which is one and a half metres long.’ ‘But I still don’t see why magnets are needed,’ Joan insisted. ‘Have a think about it, Joan. The synchrotron is full of electrons that circulate at an increasingly faster pace until they reach the speed of light. We need the magnets to make sure they move in a

curve and give off light in a certain direction.’ ‘So you mean that the magnets are a bit like the steering wheel in a car.’

Mentre anaven caminant per les instal·lacions del Sincrotró, l’Elena acabava de posar al dia la

Laura i en Joan sobre el funcionament de l’Alba.

—Renoi, que fresquet que s’està.

—Perquè el sistema funcioni correctament cal que estigui tot l’any a vint-i-tres graus, a l’estiu,

tot i que l’ideal serien vint-i-cinc graus. Ja s’agraeix, però a l’hivern...

—I amb un bon microscopi no en tindríem prou per fer les observacions de les roques que es

van formar després de l’impacte del meteorit?

—Amb els microscopis es poden veure coses petites

com les cèl·lules, però penseu que cada cèl·lula està

composta de moltes parts.

—I l’estructura d’aquestes parts, formades per

molècules i àtoms, és el que s’ha d’estudiar amb

llum de sincrotró.

—Ara ho entenc: la mida a la qual s’han d’estudiar

és més i més petita, així que només amb la llum de

sincrotró podem estudiar els àtoms i les molècules

—va dir la Laura.

—Efectivament. Igual que els microscopis serveixen

per observar les cèl·lules, amb la llum de sincrotró

podem veure les estructures que són encara més

petites.

El dia va passar en un tres i no res. Només poder

visitar el Sincrotró era tot un esdeveniment, però imagineu-vos poder investigar-hi. Per no

perdre temps, ja que el grup de recerca en geologia només disposava fins a l’endemà per dur

a terme les seves observacions, van convidar la Laura i en Joan a dormir on s’allotjava el grup,

un hotel molt proper al Sincrotró Alba, així no perdrien temps en els desplaçaments.

As they walked around the Synchrotron facilities, Elena explained how everything worked to Joan and Laura. ‘Wow. It's nice and cool here.’ ‘For the system to work correctly, the temperature needs to be at twenty-three degrees all year round. It's nice in the summer, even though the ideal temperature would be twenty-five degrees, but in winter…’ ‘Wouldn't we have enough with a good microscope to observe the rocks that formed after the impact of the meteorite?’ ‘With a microscope you can observe small things like cells, but remember that every cell is made up of many parts. And the structure of these parts is made up of molecules and atoms: that’s what you need to study with the synchrotron light.’ ‘Now I understand: the size at which they’re studied gets smaller and smaller and we can only study atoms and molecules with the synchrotron light,’ said Laura. ‘Exactly. Just as the microscope helps us to observe cells, the synchrotron light helps us to see those structures that are even smaller.’ The day flew by in no time at all. Just visiting the Synchrotron was an experience in itself, but imagine being able to do research in it! The research group in geology only had till tomorrow to make their observations and so, in order not to waste any time, they invited Laura and Joan to stay the night at the hotel near the Alba Synchrotron where the group was staying; that way they could save time by not making any unnecessary journeys.

L’endemà ben d’hora, tothom a la feina.

—Mira el canó que dispara els electrons dins l’anella del sincrotró.

—Que guai! Aquí comença tot el procés d’acceleració.

—Exacte. Llavors, a l’anella de dos-cents setanta metres de forma circular els

electrons es va accelerant fins que arriben a gairebé la velocitat de la llum.

—És al·lucinant, oi?

—Ja tinc ganes de fer observacions. Té tanta qualitat la llum d’aquest microscopi

gegant...

—No només això, pensa que la llum que emet va des de la llum visible fins a la

zona dels raigs X, que és invisible per a nosaltres.

—Llavors, aquests electrons que

van donant voltes a tota màquina

emeten la llum de sincrotró?

—Quan van a tota velocitat

els electrons emeten una llum

de gran intensitat que podem

fer anar cap als laboratoris, on

podrem aprofitar-la per fer les

observacions.

—O sigui que gairebé és com si

capturéssim el flaix de la màquina

de fer fotos i el fiquéssim al

laboratori per il·luminar el que ens

interessa investigar.

Early the next morning, everyone got straight to work. ‘Look! The canon that shoots the electrons into the synchrotron ring.’ ‘Wow. That’s very cool! And here’s where the acceleration process starts.’ ‘Exactly. And then the electrons accelerate in the two hundred and seventy-metre circular ring until they almost reach the speed of light.’ ‘It’s amazing, isn't it?’ ‘I can’t wait to do some observations. The light from this giant microscope is of such good quality…’ ‘Not just that; just think that the light it gives off goes from the visible kind to that of x-rays, which is invisible to our eyes.’

‘So these electrons that circulate around the machine produce synchrotron light?’

‘When they circulate at full speed the electrons emit a really intense light that we can direct towards the laboratory, where we can then use it for our observations.’

‘So it’s almost as if we captured the flash from a camera and transported it to the laboratory to illuminate whatever we wanted to research.’

L’equip de recerca en geologia amb el qual van col·laborar la Laura i en

Joan estava estudiant la composició dels meteorits i de les roques que

es van formar després que molts meteorits enormes xoquessin contra la

superfície de la Terra, quan la Terra va començar a ser la Terra. En caure

a la superfície terrestre, els meteorits van formar enormes

cràters, així que observant la

composició de les roques

que es van formar als

cràters al començament de

l’existència de la Terra, l’estudi

de la seva composició podria

proporcionar informació sobre les

circumstàncies de l’impacte del

meteorit i sobre l’origen mateix dels

meteorits.

—Sort que tenim el sincrotró, si

no no podríem veure l’estructura

d’aquestes roques.

—Tens tota la raó, si no no en podríem

estudiar l’estructura.

—Ja ho pots ben dir, només en podem

veure els detalls amb precisió amb la llum de

sincrotró que emet l’Alba.

The geology research group with whom Laura and Joan were collaborating were studying the composition of the meteorites and rocks that formed after lots of huge meteorites crashed to the Earth’s surface when the Earth was starting to become Earth. When they fell to the Earth’s surface, the meteorites formed enormous craters. Observing the composition of the rocks that formed the craters right when the Earth came into existence could help provide information about why the meteorites crashed and where they came from.

‘We’re lucky to have the synchrotron; otherwise we wouldn't be able to see the structure of these rocks.’

‘You’re absolutely right. If not, we wouldn't be able to study the structure.’

‘You can say that again. We can only see the details close up with the synchrotron light produced by Alba.’

The day went by almost as fast as the speed of the particle accelerator, the magnificent synchrotron. And so it was that their time came to an end and they had to say a warm goodbye to the geology group, who were flying back that very night; but only after having promised to send Laura and Joan a brief explanation of the analysis made of all the observations they had carried out.

Laura and Joan were about to go and catch the train, but it turned out that Manel was also leaving at that time, so he offered to take them home.

Tot va anar gairebé tan de pressa com la

velocitat de l’accelerador de partícules, el

magnífic sincrotró. Així, el temps va arribar

a la seva fi, i es van haver d’acomiadar

amb una forta abraçada del grup de

geologia, que tot just marxava aquella

nit amb avió, això sí, amb la promesa

d’enviar una breu explicació de

l’anàlisi de les observacions fetes

amb la Laura i en Joan.

Per tornar a casa, la Laura i en

Joan anaven a agafar el tren, però

com que en Manel també sortia es

comptes d’abrigar-se millor apugen els graus de la calefacció, oi?

—I ara! Jo no ho faria mai, això, que m’estimo massa el nostre planeta.
