In het dorp Selborne van Gilbert White broedden in 1785 vast 100en

paren. In 1965 waren er nog 11, in 2008 nog 1, sindsdien 0.

Bij twee, nu nog steeds uitermate geschikte, bruggen bij Oxford verdwijnen tussen 1965 en 1980 alle 100en huiszwaluw-nesten.

“I remember in the fifties driving from Norfolk to London and having to stop to wipe the windscreen and the headlights two or three times during every journey.”

“It was still the case in the late 1960s, but not after that. Now there have been evenings when I have commented that we’ve seen a moth. It’s almost literally that – one or two moths in a journey. That’s a completely different kind of situation from when I was growing up.”

- huiszwaluwen zijn hoogvliegers, zeleven van steigende insecten en zijndus afhankelijk van een groot areaal

- sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijnin West Europa >95% van de huiszwaluwen verdwenen

CONCLUSIES - HYPOTHESEN

- de Mansholt doctrine ‘nooit meerhonger’ (voor mensen) leidde via intensivering landgebruik tot grotehonger en afnames bij de zwaluwen

- vanaf ca. 1980 werden zwaluwennafhankelijk van de insectenproductievan water, oevers en rietlanden

- het lage percentage 2e broedsels, de recente lokale afnames en de steeds vroegere wegtrek geven aandat inmiddels de insecten-productievan de wetlands ook daalt

- ruimtelijke patronen in trends entweede broedsels, geinterpreteerd in samenhang met regional land- eninsecticidengebruik, zullen helpen bijhet ‘lezen’ van de zwaluwverhalen: DOE VOLGEND JAAR MEE!
