 “Feed-in-tariff” as a main driver but only for business not for communities

No proper consideration of environmental and social issues (for ex. violation of nature protection areas regimes)

 Public resistance: locals don’t get benefits!!!

CONTEXT OF RES DEVELOPMENT IN

UKRAINE

Renewable but

not sustainable !

Public protests

against EBRD

financing for small

hydropower

LEADING TO:

 To monitor projects development

 To develop and promote application of

RES “sustainability criteria”

 To promote the idea of community driven initiatives

to use renewables for the benefit of locals

PARTICIPATING ORGANISATIONS

• Demonstrate affordability and feasibility of solar

energy to everyone;

• Teach interested people how to use energy of the

Sun for water and house heating;

• Demonstrate available simple methods of energy

saving;

• Increase energy independence of the families;

• Lower the negative effect of using fossil fuels.

PROJECT GOALS

SOLAR COLLECTOR

Technology is provided by German company “Solar Partner Sud”

Solar collector is a passive and grid-independent system. Hot fluid

flows between a light absorber and a storage tank by the convection

principle. So, the system can work without any electrical pumps.

Solar collector with 2 square meter

panel heats up about 200 L of water

in couple sunny hours

OUR COLLECTORS ARE INSTALLED ON

PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDS, SCHOOLS AND

OTHER PUBLIC BUILDINGS

EXAMPLE 1: PUBLIC SCHOOL IN KOLKY TOWN, VOLYN REGION

 Supplies shower rooms and bathrooms

 4 square meters absorber

 200 L tank

 Copper heat exchanger

 Built-in electric backup heater

 Natural circulation

 Constructor: Vitaliy Shramko

EXAMPLE 2: SOLAR HEATING SYSTEM LOCAL ECOLOGICAL CENTRE IN

TATARBUNARY

Collectors with 4 sq m absorbing area are used for the “warm

floor” type heating.

Building: Total room area = 61,5 sq m

Average monthly economy = €30 – €50

INFORMATION CAMPAIGNS

 Leaflets about the Project

and the structure of a solar

collector

 Info stands in schools and

public buildings

 Practical manual on

construction of the collectors

• About 1 000 interested people received knowledgeand practice of using solar energy and insulating theirhouses. They install DIY solar collectors and insulatetheir homes using cheap local materials

• 5 new trainers have already been prepared to givefurther trainings to local residents

• €200 is an average cost from locals that come as aninvestment in new solar collector (total cost ~ €300)

• More than 50 collectors installed in Ukraine

• In target regions of Ukraine the Project members workwith local authorities to find ways to promote RES andEE in municipalities

PROJECT PROGRESS

• Widespread belief among population that RES are

unaffordable

• Poor awareness among rural residents about eco-

friendly insulation materials

• No economic stimulus to search for new energy efficient

and renewable energy technologies

• No effective state policy incentives for local

communities

MAIN OBSTACLES

 Developing locally based mechanisms of RES and EE promotion

 More qualified specialists

 Local business development

 More solar collectors and insulated buildings

 Joint projects and events

 Developing state policy for local RES and EE support
