Workshop ‘Digitale Radio’

• Welke technologie komt daarvoor in aanmerking?
• Hoe kan VRT-medialab helpen bij de ontwikkeling?

Debat
In welke mate wil of kan men radiodistributie automatiseren?

Distribution – Conventional Broadcast vs. Streaming
http://revo.co.uk
© VRT-medialab: onderzoek en innovatie13
Distribution – Hybrid formats
• Typical radio-formats are hybrid and use simultanuous conventional broadcast for audio and broadband internet for additional information
• The information about individual items can be synchronised with the playout service (type: mnm.be) or can be put online before the actual broadcast to allow participaption
© VRT-medialab: onderzoek en innovatie14
Distribution – Podcast and catchup
• The complexity of podcast is mainly due to the fact that content items or programmes have to be made available as a file.
• Delayed listening (“Catchup services”) and podcast is the same type of complexity and impact.
• The main inhibitor of an overall deployment of podcast services boil down to intellectual property-related issues

Medialab earlier work - Channl.tv

• A nice example was Channl.tv, which lateron led to the development of the [email protected]

State of the art (VRT)
• An online editor dupplicates information from the editorial environment into a web content management system. The website contains a search engine and thus the items become searchable.
• A non-integrated radio-player enables playout of the live-stream but, apart from the “now-on-air”, is not capable of using synchronised enhancements

Personalisation
• Provided a bi-directional communication channel, radio could become personalised (“myRadio”). However, this would assume:
Rigourous thematic metadata management
User profiles expressed using the same metadata aspects
Computer Assisted Manufacturing for assembly automation
Then again, Intellectual Property Management...
• Preferably cross-brand

Current development
• Current developments include profiling of user preferences, developed as a plugin for facebook, and designed to integrate with 3rd party websites

Issue – metadata provisioning
• Assuming a file-based back-office that would automatically bring online all audiovisual material that is approved for distribution creates a problem of retrievability:
Search engines can only process text
Up to now, as long as there is no anchor text or webpage that would conventionally introduce the item, it will not be indexed and appear in ‘My Selection’
Research is planned to partially cope with this issue (cf. Project ‘Memento’)

Conclusies(1)
