A wonderful mix of colors, shapesand materials – adding the personaltouch to a Christmas giftTina Groth and her sister own a gift shop in central

Stockholm. After several seasons focusing on sum-mer sales in a seaside resort, they opened a storeand began selling online.

Business is increasingly drifting toward long-distance sales (mainly distributed by Sweden Post)but the store itself is also busy. A lot of customerswant help wrapping their newly purchased gifts, and the sisters have responded to this need bysetting up a course in creative gift wrapping.

“We’ve held the course a few times and it’sbeen extremely popular. There’s a trend for giving

beautifully wrapped gifts to our nearest anddearest. We draw on our experience, stimulatethe customers’ own imagination and have funtogether,” says Tina Groth.

Christmas gifts is the theme of this year’s stamps for inland Christmasgreetings. Siri Ahmed Backström has created four striking designs featuringgifts of different shapes and colors. A way of adding extra joy to gifts andother parcels. Tina Groth tells us more about creative gift wrapping.

She has a few basic rules for adding the perso-

nal touch to a gift, all based on plenty of variationand contrasts. Tina demonstrates this when shewraps the Swedish Stamp Booklet 2009 folder (asecret Christmas gift…).

“I place a sheet of Christmassy red paper at thebottom and wrap it with Cellophane. The paper isslightly bigger than the gift, and I twist the excesspaper into a rose. Green is another Christmascolor, as is snow-white, so I use ribbon in thesecolors. I create a feeling of light snowfall by shred-ding the white ribbon.”

Who could be anything but delighted to get thisChristmas gift? Both with the gift itself, and thebeautiful wrapping signed Tina Groth.

Tina Groth worksmagic withCellophane, redpaper twistedinto a rose, shredded white

ribbon and greenstrips. And heypresto – a nicepresent is madeextra special.

What artistic technique did you use?“I drew the Christmas stamps inIllustrator. I usually work by hand, buthere I needed to be able to switchbetween looking at the images inlarge and small format.”

What was it like working withstamps compared to other pictures?“Obviously size was a challenge. But when I was researching stamps,I realized how much detail you canwork with anyway.”

What’s behind the parcel motifidea?“I wanted to do something joyful andI drew on my childhood enthusiasmfor Christmas gifts. A parcel can ofcourse also symbolize expectations.”

What’s your artistic career to date?“I’ve just graduated in graphic designand illustration from the UniversityCollege of Arts, Crafts and Design inStockholm. I’ll start my Master’s therein the fall. As an illustrator I’ve beenpublished in magazines like Arenaand Vi, and I designed the cover forSweden’s state Public Service Reportin 2008.”

Do you collect stamps?

“No, but I look closely at the designswhen I receive letters. I’m particularlyimpressed by the traditional craft ofstamp engraving.”

When do you write cards?“I always send postcards when I’maway, and I usually try to send Christ-mas cards. Preferably homemade.”

The ptarmigan – a hardy mountain birdthat turns white for winter “Whether or not there’s snow makes no real

difference to when the ptarmigan begins to changefrom brown to white. The change is controlledby hormones which react to the decreasingnumber of daylight hours, and also to the fall intemperature. This is generally the case withanimals that turn white,” says ptarmigan expertDr Maria Willebrand.

So does snow play no part in the color change? After all, the animals that turn white live in areaswhere there’s snow. Maria Willebrand goes on

to say:“Actually the snow comes second. When theptarmigan starts shedding its brown feathers andgets white ones instead, the bird heads for vastwhite expanses. The ptarmigan isn’t currentlyendangered, but climate change means thatincreasingly large areas remain snow free, sowhite birds risk becoming easy pickings for birdsof prey.”

The ptarmigan can be found in the entirenorthern hemisphere, including the Japanese

islands, the Alps and the Pyrenees. In Sweden thesouthern border is in the mountains in Dalarna, northern central Sweden, where the ‘stampptarmigan’ was photographed.

The 35-centimeter-long, 500-gram bird is well-

suited to the mountain climate. When the weatherbecomes too cold, the bird digs down into the snowwhere it can lay still for a day. The feathers on itsfeet work like snowshoes.

“The ptarmigan is a hardy bird, which is whyit is the name the Inuit in Greenland and Canadahave for their children. If they’re born in the sum-mer they’re called ducks, and if they’re born inthe winter they’re called ptarmigans,” says MariaWillebrand.

The ptarmigan ( Lagopus muta ) is accompaniedin the stamp booklet by the ermine ( Mustela

erminea ) and the alpine hare ( Lepus timidus ). Thestoat changes colorand is called an erminewhen temperatures fallbelow +5°C, and thechange takes a coupleof weeks. The alpinehare’s winter coat isalmost twice as thick as

the summer one. Thehairs are filled with airand provide excellentinsulation.

The ermine, ptarmigan and alpine hare in their snow-white coats andplumage feature on the stamps for international Christmas greetings. Thechange of color is caused in part by a change in temperature as winterapproaches, and partly by decreasing daylight. When the ptarmigan, often

called the snow grouse, loses a brown feather it is replaced by a white one.

The snow-white ptarmigan on the stamp was in the Sälen mountains, northern Sweden, in late winter 2008 when it was captured on filmby photographer Stefan Hage.

Maria Willebrand.

The ptarmigan’s photographer:

Stefan Hage

Photographer Stefan Hage has hada genuine interest in birds andbird-watching since childhood. Todate he has spotted over 420 birdspecies in Sweden. One of these isthe ptarmigan, which he has spottedand photographed many times. He

photographed the ptarmigan on thestamp in Sälen, northern Sweden, inmid-April 2008.  “My family were on a skiing holi-day. As I prefer photography to skiingI made my way up to Nipfjället, whereI know there are both ptarmigan andwillow ptarmigan.”  Once there, Stefan Hage simplywalked along the bare mountainabove the tree line and heard severalcourting ptarmigans a short distanceaway.

“I managed to get close enoughto one of the roosters and took aseries of shots over an hour. I wasincredibly lucky that the surface-snowhad frozen hard and the weatherwas great with clear blue skies andno wind at all. Being able to sharein this drama and the peace andtranquility up here in the mountainsis an indescribable feeling that has tobe experienced.”

The ptarmigan is Stefan Hage’

stamp debut. Over the years he haspublished many photographs inbird books and magazines, both inSweden and internationally.

This year’s issue of Swedish Stamps Narrate is now here. Thisattractive, richly illustrated, fact-filled book contains all thestamp designs issued during 2009. It is the book for anyonewishing to relive and marvel at the past year in stamps. A great

Christmas gift for friends and family!

Stories worth reading about all this year’sSwedish stamps in the new Year BookAstronaut Christer Fuglesang himself wrotethe chapter A glimpse into space about theamazing feeling he had during the space walkson his first journey in December 2006.

“It was a wonderful, almost surreal experi-ence to drift around in weightlessness outsidethe space station and see our incredibly beauti-ful Earth below. One of the most memorablemoments was when I saw a fabulous display ofNorthern Lights against the curved horizon.”

Christer Fuglesang also writes about Swedish

space research – in which studies into theNorthern Lights have been a driving factor –and about the joy he felt at being “the first torepresent our fair land in space”.

A handwritten letter in a beautiful envelopecan be just as valuable as an expensive giftin a parcel. If the envelope or parcel is alsosealed with wax and a seal, the value is evengreater. Christmas is peak season both forgreetings and for parcels.

In the chapter Gift-wrapped wishes, artistLasse Berghagen is interviewed at home in hiskitchen by Sten Feldreich. At the kitchen tableLasse has prepared a wax seal and candle.

“When I write affectionate letters I add myseal on the back of the envelope. It adds anextra special touch.”

Lasse Berghagen is a keen letter-writerand wants the tradition to continue for futuregenerations.

“Anyone who writes a letter is giving their

time,” he says.Nature worth protecting is the title of anotherof the book’s chapters. It presents BrutusÖstling, the world photographer who focuses onour feathered friends. Four of his images havelaid the foundation for the Winged stamp issue.

The book also contains detailed facts aboutall the year’s stamp designs and reproductionsof all the first-day cancellations – small worksof art in themselves.

The 2009 Booklet Year Set contains all the booklets and minisheets

issued during the year, brought together in one set. From the Middle

Ages – the minisheet with a painting by Albertus Pictor – to the space

age, with Christer Fuglesang and his journey in a booklet with five

designs. Buy the Booklet Year Set to keep – or make it a Christmas gift!

All 2009 booklets and minisheetsin a specially designed folder 2009 saw the release of 10 booklets and two

minisheets, one of which depicts the dramatic

Livets hjul/The Wheel of Life painting by medi-

eval master Albertus Pictor. The other minisheet

commemorated Braille.

The majority of this year’s booklets have the

denomination for domestic greetings. Journey

into Space tells the story of astronaut Christer

Fuglesang’s spaceflight, the booklet Together

stirs feelings among senders and recipients

alike, while Cult Cars shows classic cars from

the 1940s to 1960s. The 100th anniversaryof banana imports into Sweden was marked

with the booklet Bananas Bananas, showing

bananas with charming banana figures. Spices

for cooking also had their own booklet.

Summer and Christmas were, as usual,

celebrated each with their own booklet. The

stamps in the Summer Nature booklet drew on

designs from four national parks from northern

to southern Sweden. The Christmas stamps for

domestic Christmas greetings depicted some-

thing we all like to receive: Christmas gifts.

Three booklets for international greetings

were issued during the year: Europa 2009 –

Astronomy, Swedish Highlights and Snow-

White Animals.

All the stamps and minisheets are mint and

mounted in the folder. The 2009 Booklet Year

Set also contains highly readable texts about,

for example, what it feels like to own and drive

a cult Cadillac, and are packed with informa-

tion about the booklets and stamps in Swedish,

English and German.
