She tried the drawers of a bureau, but could in>t open them *• You see it is locked, but sometimes ho leaves the key, then we will come and steal.*' Then retracing her steps, she came again to the room of Madam $ --------, w e being all the while at her heels ;. and see- ing a sick lady coming whom we had left in the rirst chamber, she drew back saying. “ See, H-------- , who com*, s ! Let us give her room to p i-s." She stood still, turning her back as if she dreaded to iie discovered ; but here also, as elsewhere, our presence did not seem to annoy her. Finally she returned to the room where she first lost con- sciousness of our presence. There, approaching a table on which was lying a pack of dominoes, with which she some- times amused herself, sh-' called her invisible comrade saying, “ Come, let us play dominoes,*'and she commenced playing her-cIt' for the two. 1 thought I would save her half the trouble, and l purposely laid down one of a wrong number. 2>e'*, one has put a five for a «ix. Haven't you a six ’ Very well, draw,’’ and her own hand performed the oflke indicated. The pieces played by the somnambulist were well joined ; however, when 1 laid down a piece in two instances, she drew back, her hand without saying any thing, as if she were an- noyed by some obstacle that was in the way. Pretty soon she left the table, saying, “ You are a stupid girl, you don't know how to play, and you cheat.” She went some steps to seat herself, thus approaching our presence, and when wc wen: about to withdraw from her she expressed the desire to be awaked. That being done, every thing indicated her complete forgetfulness of what had occurred. Then searching m her pocket, she complained that she missed her ear-drops. That evidently was ail she knew. W e observed that she had not the three little pieces of money winch had been given her at the commencement of the sitting, nor had she the half-dollar, nor the brooch. W e sent her out upon an errand in order that wc might in her absence examine all the nooks and corners where she had been. The bed was displaced, the carpet taken up, etc. Vain researches ' Night having arrived, we placed ourselves at the table as was our custom. Mr. L -------and Mr. D----------- had rejoined us. W e were then five in number. In a few seconds the child passed into the abnormal stale, and certainly without the agency, at least voluntary, of any <»nc of us this lime. As soon as I saw her hands move, 1 shppe,d under the table, wln-re 1 soon saw her hands descend and grope about a-i if to seize something in the air, And this motion was accompanied by the medium with these words, “ Give it to me, then.” But nothing was given that time, nor at any of the other sittings at which l was in like manner hidden under the table. Could 1 have been thus an obstacle Being questioned, the medium responded that the little thief had a wry* countenance and crooked figure ; and she added that it was a litllo girl connected with the family <>| Madam ____ . The latter said site recognized her as one of her cousins, dead nearly twenty year-, and who at the time of her decease vas twelve years old. She died with convulsions * Our owwpondjpi here gives u diagram of tbs brooch It is in r. almost touching her, I tjlC dm;'*’ "I n deeply- indcBted oak-leaf, i*u inch and u quarter wide at iul not annoy licr I Il„ „ J e s t j.«rl w l an inch »nd Uiiao ajuiartera lur,s which distorted her face , »he wa.-i much given l<) pilfering, but ii - slio w,is sickly they uxensed nil her funU-w * The medium, not having grasped my thing, ar<*'i: from her b.-.it ii ml removed from tho table, uml 1 cmiie forth from my hiding-phu t \\ o fol!■>wed the sleeper in all In:r mure lie- and countermarches; finally alio went out of the room, j i a d through two other chambers, and entered the dining-room in or - der to seal lu r-ell* at thu common table. Oito of iU longer side* waa about right inches from the wall The medium took a scat at the end oi the table *o as to bring (ho wall on her right.* She placed her hands on the table with the palms downward There was a light burning upon the end of the table next to her, and directly in front of her, and it* flame, .standing at the height - about r.r........ - .......................................... ...... directly in her fat-c. The somnambulist seemed to ink with another— with Alice perhaps— to whom she said, “ Give it to nte quick, before she cornea.” On her account the other—-the thieving Spirit— was doubtless delaying her vj.-it. As she pronounced these words .-lie quickly extended her right hand at a point between the table and tile w all, about three or four inches below the top of the table, and consequently into the shade, and almost immediately the hand again arose with a package, which was neither enveloped nor tied together, but consisted of fourteen engravings of diverse kinds, like those which l described in my previous letter. They measured at an average about four inches by five or six, and must have ost at least two dollars— that is to say, more than the young girl could have possessed at one time. I ran to the opposite aide of the table; I removed that end a little farther from the wall, and looked and passed my hand everywhere. Evidently the medium's hand hail not extended to the point where the ends separate from each other bv means of the grooves, and where, besides, I found nothing but dust, and tlm pictures were very clean. Nor were they in the least crumpled, which would certainly not have been the case if they had been until then concealed in the girl's clothes. My examination completed, I took niv position, standing, di- rectly behind the medium. The three other person:, also standing, were by the table at the left of the medium, and near her side ; but in the meanwhile the medium awoke. That which is now to be related wo can certify fully, and without doubt. AH preserving our places— the medium seated and wp stand- ing— and having our eyes fixed upon the girl’s hand*, which had resumed their place upon the table, with the palms down- ward, this i> what we witnessed in the mo.il unr>>r-Uikable manner; for every thing was done slowly in this last phase of the /icanrv, during which the medium continued perfectly lake: 1 said to the girl, “ They have just given you those pictures, but they have not returned the half-dollar which they have stolen, and they must now return it.” Immediately, to the great surpriso of the medium, and also somewhat to ours, ln-r right hand slowly turned palm upward, ul the same time that her arm performed an impulsive movement. These motions, though complex, were altogether analogous to those which are sometimes produced hy the will of a magnetizer, expressed or not, upon an impressible person. The hand then moved to the right until it came to the edge of the table, and while the fingers were not fully extended, but wore immovable, the whole hand showed every appearance of rigidity, which, how- ever, 1 abstained from verifying tins time W e then saw the hand descend three or four inches into the shadow caused by the edge of tho table, and that by a movement of its own which was little dependent upon the extension of the arm. This immersion of the hand into the shade onlv continued about four seconds, during which the hand did not stop its mo- tion, and rose again with the same slowness, and showed us. at the instant of its emersion from the darkness, the half-dol- lar lying in the palm, which had been continually kept up- ward, and to all appearance rigid, the lingers continually re- maining in fixed positions. An impulsive movement then brought the arm over tho table, and the hum! slowly turning over, dropped the half-dollar at the foot of the chaitdcl Then the hand became suddunly free, and resumed its place by tlm side of the left hand, which had not &iirrod. The me- dium said slu had felt ” as though some one had drawn hi hand asido, and then dropped something heavy into it.” I again spoke and said, “ That is not a ll, they have ul- taken from you fifteen cents, and they must bring them back;’* when lo! tho same hand, performing tho same movements and with the same slowness, returned again and threw down the throe little mins by the side of tho first piece' ** l*et them bring hack also the brooch,’’ added l ; and the same hand, with tho same docility, the sumo precision, * Our correspondent gives n diagram of the position*, hut this we are obliged to omit, and in il* place we talc the liberty of supplying a few words not in the original, for lire purpose of making the descrip- tion clear and lb « •am*-- hIovviu *•. So far, then, every thing has been related with precision ; hut I must omit nothing which may serve to clear up the question. Here, then, is what I promised in an early part of this communication, and to confirm which time was re- quired. In the first place, I discovered that the child had bough", some pictures, medals, and books, though it does iu»t seem possible that she could have commanded the sum necessary to purchase all wc have seen. 1 wilt grant, then, that all the objects received at our n n.ces may have been previously pur- chased, and one may conclude from this that the choice ot these articles was the business of the medium, although she may have been influenced in this as she hits been in many other ways. The character of those objects, (hen, praxes nothing ; but let us proceed further. Haring told the child what I knew of her acts and motion■» ami having, while passing, even shown her the store w ioro she had made her purchases, she domed t: ; but perhaps in this she was also subject to a foreign influence, by which she seems to hare been controlled on tho next morning, when, in* sL-.ul of going directly to school, she went aild bought some- thing at the Mine store. She subsequently admitted that my accusation was just, but could only explain by saying, “ 1 could not help it.’' Coming together one night before the hour fixed t r our meeting, w© wished to search her, as was our custom, and tw o persons [feminine] attempted to proceed to that task , but the sleeper manifested great opposition. She rolled upon the floor, and rendered the operation quite difficult. U was not insisted upon, but it was believed that she had a bo. k conceal- ed in her clothes, and one was found in them some moments after on the sofa where she had just laid down. I testily, however, that in the- - searching operations (r*s- i.v.v J e d o .■tinier] wc have often enough had caux* !o be satisfied : nevertheless, we should not neglect those precautions, which are always useful in experiment*. I was put on my guard one day by the bookseller, who informed me that the uirl hod bought another book (turning again out of her path as she was going to school). It was on the same day that she was to be taken to a house where she had not In on before. I did not fail to cause her ft* be searched before her departure ; but •be made a vigorous opposition, and threw herself into an •«ruted chair where the book was soon found, and winch she conceal- ed while she remained seated, but winch she prutulflv dropped out of her pocket. Wdial she would have afterward done with tins book under the severe examination at the commencement of the m' uniV, at the other house (the pockets never being for- gotten m such cases), is what I would much like to know. I do not think it should be doubted that she was impressed in respect to this search, us she had always laughingly submitted (o similar examinations at all tlu> houses to which w e bad con- dueled her. Perhaps, then, some invisible hand would have removed from her all causes of embarrassment, and it mav be “I -. j Gi :•at the Tow of bogua? product d by xctuag upon •• . ly 1 . : Lie M in - vr--v were ail amazed, are not all these * every man :n our own tongue, » This sofut.on of the origin oi being in rS©U‘ ou aci ul’ aupero confirmed by lire Spiritual .Mur, Mediums are now mad*-, to spea gotber unknown to themselves ; dium in a number of different 1 by himself. T h e medium, not having grasped any thing, arose from her seat and removed from the table, and I cam e forth from my hiding-place. \Ve followed the ilcep er in all her m arches and counterm arches; finally >hc went out o f the room, pns-.cd through two other cham bers, and entered the dining-room tn order to sea! hersr-jf a t the common table T h e (able, ordinarily round, but formed of two parts, ami capable o f being extend* d by slides and by supplying additional boards in the mtdd} was now oval. It thus measured four feet one way and five and a h a lf the other. One o f its longer sides was about eight inches from the wall. T h e medium took a s e -t at the end of the table bo as to bring the wall on her right.’’ S h e placed

her hands on the table with the paiins downward. T h ere v. as a light burning upon the end o f the table next to her, and d irectly in front o f her, and its flame, standing at the heighto f about { « - » . - - ■ •»---------- m - ' " l,lCdirectlv in her lace. T h e somnambulist seem ed to tr.ik with another— with A lice perhaps—-to whom sh e said, “ G ive u to me quick, before she com es.’ ’ On her account the other— the thieving Spirit— was doubtli as delaying her visit. A s she

pronounced these words sh e quickiv extended her right hand at a point betw een the table and the w all, about th ree o r four in ches below the top o f the table, and consequently into the shade, and alm ost immediately the hand again arose with package, w hich was neither enveloped nor tied together, but consisted o f fo u r te en «:nro.\:ngs of diverse kinds, like those w hich I described in my previous letter. T h e y m easured a:

an average about four in ch es by five or six , and must hare cost at least two dollars— that is to say. more than th e young girl could have possessed at one lim e.

I ran to the opposite side o f the ta b le ; I removed that cud a little farther from the w all, and looked and passed m y hand everyw here. Ev id ently the medium's hand had not extended to the point w here the ends separate from each other by means o f the grooves, and w here. ! . -ides. I found nothing : m du?t. and the pictures w ere vc-iy clean . Nor w ere y :u the least crum pled, w hich would certain ly not have been the case if they had been until then concealed in the girl's clothes.

My exam ination com pleted, i took m y position, standing, directly behind the medium. T h e three other persons, also standing, w ere by the table at the left o f the medium, and

near her side ; but in the meanwhile the medium aw oke.T h a t which is now to be related w c can certify fully, and

without doubt.A ll preserving our places— the medium seated and w** stand

1 said to the girl, “ T h ey have ju st given you those pictures,

but th ey have not returned the half-dollar which they have stolen, and they must now return it.” Im m ediately, lo the great surprise o f the medium, and also som ew hat to ours, her right hand slow ly turned palm upward, at the sam e time that her arm performed an impulsive movement. T h e se motions, though com plex, w ere altogether analogous to those which are som etim es produced by the w ill o f a raagnetizer, expressed or not, upon an im pressible person. T h e baud then moved to the rig)?; until it came to the edge o f the table, and while the fingers were not fully extended, but w ere immovable, tb - whole hand showed every appearance o f rigidity, w hich, however, 1 abstained from verifying this time. W e then saw the hand descend thr-.e or four inches into the shadow caused by the edge o f the table, and that bv a movement o f its own which was little dependent upon the extension o f the arm. T h is immersion o f the hand into the shade only continued

about four seconds, during which the hand did not stop its motion, and rose again with the sam e slow ness, and showed us. at the instant o f its em ersion from the darkness, the half-dollar lying tn the palm, w hich had been continually kept upward, and to all appearance rigid , the fingers continually remaining in fixed positions. An im pulsive movement then brought the arm over the table, and tho hand slow ly turning over, dropped the half-dollar at the foot o f the chandelier. T h en the hand becam e . udJen ly free , and resumed its place by the side o f the le ft band, which had uot stirred. T h e medium said she had felt " a s though some one had drawn her hand aside, and then dropped something heavy into it."

1 again .-poke and s-.id, “ T h a t is not a l l ; th ev have also taken from you fifteen < m ts , and th»-y must bring them back
