CIS general manager Steven Herrick explains that "software is one of the things explicitly mentioned in good laboratory practice regulations as something you must show an audi- tor if he comes in and asks. If you don't have the source code, how are you going to do that? The second rea- son to ship source code is so a custom- er can play with it." In fact, CIS even offers a course on how users can modi- fy the code. But one important proviso here is that if a customer modifies code and creates a problem, CIS is not, under warranty obligation, re- quired to bail him out. Among the new entries premiering at Pittcon '84 was Analyti- cal Instrument Industry Report. Pub- lished in Great Britain, AH Report will include the latest corporate quar- terly revenue and profit figures, infor- mation on recent corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and interna- tional instrument contracts, updates on technological advances of interest to the industry, and feature articles on selected topics. The pilot issue of the newsletter, which was available at the conference, contained features on the scientific software market and on the impact of the Fourier transform in- frared spectrometer on sales of disper- sive infrared instruments. According to All Report senior editor Gordon Wilkinson, the new publication will depend solely on its subscription reve- nue, since it will not be accepting any advertising. There are lots of people in the in- dustry who are going to want to have access to All Report. Annual sub- scriptions are available for £195 (Unit- ed Kingdom and Europe) or $375 (U.S. and the rest of the world) from All Report, P.O. Box 1, Chichester, West Sussex P020 6XR, United Kingdom. SEAC Established Presentation of the first Charles N. Reilley Award in Electroanalytical Chemistry to Allen J. Bard at this year's conference marked the debut of a new scientific association, the Soci- ety for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC). SEAC is "a new organization for scientists interested in all aspects of electroanalytical chemistry, from theory to practical applications," ac- cording to the premiere issue of the SEAC Newsletter. A primary purpose of SEAC is to se- lect a recipient of the Reilley award, which will be presented annually at the Pittsburgh Conference. The award, given in memory of Charles N. Reilley of the University of North Carolina, recognizes "an active re- searcher who has made a major contri- bution to the theory, instrumentation, or application of electroanalytical chemistry." Bioanalytical Systems Inc. of West Lafayette, Ind., has agreed to fund the $1000 award for a minimum of ten years.
