PROJECT STATEMENT Our main objective is to create places for people to gather and enhance the sense of community in the City of Parkersburg. We will have several Green Spaces where people can enjoy being outdoors. In addition, we are proposing spaces for cultural uses, restaurants, and commercial spaces. Our new design will revitalize Parkersburg, and will generate a new identity of culture, lifestyle, and he althy environme nt. Our design will invite people from Market Street and Ann Street, as well as visitors, towards our proposed green paths and Water Facilities. Currently , the city of Parkersburg has significant land use within their downtown dev oted to surface parking spaces. This has left a void in open green and gathering spaces within their city , contributed to the urban heat island affect and significantly impaired water quality that enterstheOhioandlittleKanawharivers. Inordaertohelpbuildstronger community connections , and appreciation for the environment and integrate sustainable stormwater initiatives throughout parkersburg, we shall explore connections of open pedestrian spaces that both manage and integrate green infrastructure seamlessly into the landscape. We are proposing 1) a Stormwater Park and a Library Media Center, 2) a Green Parking lot, and a 3) Kitchen Garden & an Outdoor Cafe. The Outdoor Cafe will be the focal center of all three projects, and it will be a Node for people of all ages to gather around and encounter. We will have vintage locomotives and box cars on the abandoned railway bridge, over 6th Street, as the Libr ary Media Center and other amenities such as computer labs, and dining. It will be a Landmark and enhance the identity of the City of Parkersburg. We are proposing Constructed Wetlands, Rain Gardens, B io-Retention, Bio-Swales, and Green Roofs. They will reduce the volume and pollutants of stormwater runoff before it goes into the sewer system and nearby waterways. One of functions is by capturing stormwate r and diverting it to where it can be detained, infiltrated into the ground, evaporated, absorbed by plants, and/or reused. These facilities will be not only for stormwater management but also for educational purposes, as well as enjoyable urban scape.
