PROJECT STATEMENT

Our main objective is to create places forpeople to gather and enhance the senseof community in the City of Parkersburg.We will have several Green Spaces wherepeople can enjoy being outdoors. In addition,we are proposing spaces for cultural uses,restaurants, and commercial spaces. Ournew design will revitalize Parkersburg,and will generate a new identity of culture,lifestyle, and healthy environment. Ourdesign will invite people from Market Streetan

d Ann Street, as well as visitors, towards ourproposed green paths and Water Facilities.

Currently , the city of Parkersburg has significant land use within their

downtown devoted to surface parking spaces. This has left a void in

open green and gathering spaces within their city , contributed to the

urban heat island affect and significantly impaired water quality that

enters the Ohio and little Kanawha rivers. In ordaer to help build stronger

community connections , and appreciation for the environment and

integrate sustainable stormwater initiatives throughout parkersburg,

we shall explore connections of open pedestrian spaces that both

manage and integrate green infrastructure seamlessly into thelandscape.

We are proposing 1) a Stormwater Parkand a Library Media Center, 2) a GreenParking lot, and a 3) Kitchen Garden & anOutdoor Cafe. The Outdoor Cafe will be thefocal center of all three projects, and it willbe a Node for people of all ages to gatheraround and encounter. We will have vintagelocomotives and box cars on the abandonedrailway bridge, over 6th Street, as theLibr

ary Media Center and other amenitiessuch as computer labs, and dining. It will bea Landmark and enhance the identity of theCity of Parkersburg.

We are proposing Constructed Wetlands,Rain Gardens, B

io-Retention, Bio-Swales, andGreen Roofs. They will reduce the volumeand pollutants of stormwater runoff beforeit goes into the sewer system and nearbywaterways. One of functions is by capturingstormwater and diverting it to where it canbe detained, infiltrated into the ground,evaporated, absorbed by plants, and/orreused. These facilities will be not onlyfor stormwater management but also foreducational purposes, as well as enjoyableurban scape.
