Save the date for Indigenous Literacy Day!

This year, Indigenous Literacy Day: Celebrating Stories and Language (ILD) will be held on

Wednesday 1 September, and is an annual celebration featuring Indigenous languages,

stories, peoples and culture.

The History of Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) is hosted by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, an

Australian not-for-profit charity that aims to improve literacy in remote Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander communities.

It started in 2004 when former teacher and Brisbane bookstore owner Suzy Wilson created

a Challenge to raise funds to boost literacy levels.

Taking place on the first Wednesday of September each year, the event raises awareness of

the educational struggles facing many Indigenous groups in Australia, while also serving as

a fundraiser to collect literary resources for children living in more isolated areas of the

country.

What does the Indigenous literacy gap mean?

Only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national

minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities.

The situation is improving but there is still a long way to go and the challenges are immense.

Apart from the historical, health, social, and educational disadvantage issues, many remote

communities don’t have many, if any, books. Most of the remote communities that we work

with report there are fewer than five books in family homes.

Our approach to raising literacy levels starts at a community level with Book Supply. New,

culturally appropriate books are gifted to schools and organisations operating in remote

communities.

Colourful m

hat will I learn?

You will:

▪ discover how

a water xylophone w

orks▪

create your own rainbow

water xylophone

▪ experim

ent with m

aking and organising musical sounds

▪ com

pose your own m

usical piece.

Before you begin Today you are going to m

ake your very own rainbow

water xylophone!

You'll need: ▪

6 glasses or glass jars (all roughly the same size)

▪ 2 spoons (w

ooden and metal for different sound quality)

▪ a jug of w

ater▪

food colouring in red, yellow and blue – you could m

ix to make the

rainbow. (D

on't worry if you haven't got any food co louring, your xylophone

will still w

ork!)▪

a phone or camera to record your com

position.

1.Discover

Sound waves are vibrations that travel through a m

e dium, in our case, w

ater. W

hen you change the amount of w

ater in your glasses, you also change the sound w

aves.

Each of your glasses will have a different sound w

hen you tap your spoon.

When you hit the glass w

ith your spoon, the glass filled with the m

ost water w

ill have the low

est sound (or, in musical term

s, pitch) and the glass with the least

amount of w

ater will have the highest sound (or pitch).

2.Experiment

Follow these instructions to create your ow

n rainbow w

ater xyloph one. 1.

Using a jug of w

ater, add water to the glasses or jars. M

easure theam

ount of water you put in each cup, varying the am

ount.2.

Using the spoon, tap the glass t o experim

ent with sound to create a

different pitch for each one. Try to get 6 different sounds.

Remem

be r, the more w

ater, the lower the pitch. The less w

ater, the higher the pitch. 3.

Listen carefully to the different pitches created with different am

ounts ofw

ater in each glass. Did you get 6 different sounds?

4.Change the w

ater amounts in the glasses until you are happy w

ith the 6different sounds.5.

Arrange your sounds from

lowest pitch

to highest pitch.6.

Add food colouring to the w

ater.

Tip: One drop of food colouring is all that is needed to colour the w

ater. W

hen mixing colours, try one drop each of tw

o colours. You can also try adding a drop of food colouring and not stirring the w

ater. 7.

Try a different colour in each glass and experiment m

ixing new colours.

Your rainbow w

ater xylophone is ready to use!

3.C

ompose

Now

we are ready to have som

e musical fun !

Listen carefully to the sounds of your rainbow xylophone and arrange your

glasses from low

est pitch to highest pitch.

Experiment w

ith making and im

provising musical sounds.

Combine and organise your m

usical sounds and improvisations to create your

own com

position.

Perform your com

position for others around you. You might like to teach them

your com

position and how to use your rainbow

xylophone.
