God our provider, the giver of all good gifts, we thank you for food and nourishment. Show us how to share what we have been given and to be your generous disciples. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Yours in Christ, Wiki Whittaker. Tala lava, Malo e lelei, Kia Orana, Ni Sa Bula, Tena koutou katoa! For the next five Sundays, the church will read from John’s Gospel. Today we read about the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. The feeding of the crowd with five loaves and two fish is the only miracle that appears in each of the four Gospel accounts. This miracle points to salvation. John wrote that this sign was given so that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that those who believe may have life in abundance. St John the Evangelist Catholic School FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY Today’s Gospel, Jesus fed many people with small amount of food, he fed the hungry and did so with great generosity. It reminds us that we gather here to feed from his body and blood. Jesus feeds our hunger, longing deeply within us, so we receive this precious food because we need it and he invites us to receive it. In this Eucharist, we are made one body with the Lord, as we hear in the second reading. The readings of today invite us to become humble instruments in God’s hands by sharing our blessings with ours needy brothers and sisters. It also reminds us that if we have been blessed with an abundance of earthly bread, then these gifts are for sharing with the hungry. When physical hungers are satisfied, then we are challenged to satisfy the deeper hungers- for love, mercy, forgiveness, companionship, peace and fulfillment. In the Gospel today tells that Jesus meets the most basic human need, hunger with generosity and compassion. It tells us that God really cares about his people and that there is enough and more than enough for everybody. God is a caring Father and He wants our cooperation to be part of His caring for all of us, His children. Let us put into practice the verbal word of the Eucharist. Take humbly and generously what God gives us. Bless it by offering it to others in God’s love, break it off from our own needs and interests for the sake of others, give it away with joy-filled gratitude to God who has blessed us with so much. We are called by Christ to become the Eucharist we receive at this altar giving thanks for what we have received by sharing those gifts - our talents, our riches, ourselves, to work our own miracles of creating communities of joyful faith. -Fr Aleki Piula PARISH OFFICE (Office Hours 9am-3pm, Tues - Fri) 14 Otara Road, PO BOX 61-115, Otara Manukau 2159 Phone: 09 274-8214 Email: [email protected] www.otaracatholic.org.nz MASS TIMES St John the Evangelist: Tues to Fri 7.30am Saturday 8.00am Sunday 9.00am 11.00am St Peter Chanel Tues to Fri 5.30pm Saturday 8.00am Sunday 9.00am Fr Aleki Piula (PARISH PRIEST) Fr Mikaele Endemann (ASSISTANT PARISH PRIEST) CHURCH ADDRESS St John the Evangelist 14 Otara Road, Otara 2023 St Peter Chanel 42 Boundary Road, Clover Park 2023 ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL Mrs Wiki Whittaker (Principal) Mrs Agnes Mika (Secretary) 14b Otara Road, PO BOX 61-146 Otara, Manukau 2159 Phone: 09 274-7558 To report absences or for the school office please call 09 2747558 The weekly newsletter of St Peter Chanel Parish, Clover Park St John the Evangelist Parish, Otara St John the Evangelist Catholic School, Otara ONE BODY, ONE SPIRIT IN THE LORD Today’s Readings 2 Kings 4:42-44 145 Ephesians 4:1-6 John 6:1-15 Next Sunday Exodus 16:2-4,12-15 78 Ephesians 4:17-20-24 John 6:24-35 First Reading Psalm Second Reading Gospel PARISH CALENDAR Tuesday 31st July 7.00pm, Finance Committee at SPC Wednesday 1st August 6.00pm, Divine Mercy at SPC 7.00pm, Liturgy Committee at SPC Thursday 2nd August 5.30pm, Divine Mercy at SJE 7.00pm, Parish Pastoral Council at SPC Friday 3rd August 6.00pm, Sacramental Program at both parishes Saturday 4th August 10.00am Baptism Preparation at SJE SUNDAY 29th JULY 2018 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
