From the pastors desk:

Month of December was filled with various celebrations in St. Joachim church campus. In the first half of the month, on every evening we had Guadalupe novena masses from

December 3rd to December 11th, culminating in the celebration of the festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th 2014. In between these Guadalupe Novena celebrations, the Nicaraguan community of St.Joachim celebrated the feast of our Lady of Immaculate Conception on Saturday December 6th 2014. The grand festival of Guadalupe on December 12th was immediately followed by Christmas Carol and Dinner by St. Joachim Choir and St. Joachim School on December 13, 2014. After a short break of just two days - keeping apart the usual weekend liturgical celebrations - two other Novena celebrations began to be celebrated from December 16th to December 24th 2014, culminating in the festival of Christmas. The first one was the Simbang Gabi celebrations from December 16th to December 24th 2014. Every morning at 5.30, nearly 300 people participated in the Novena mass held in our church. Breakfast was served in the Gym to everyone who participated in the novena mass. Like last year, the chief organizers of this years Simbang Gabi celebrations were the Knights of Columbus. Unlike the previous years, this year our neighboring parishes too, began to celebrate the Simbang Gabi celebrations for nine days. As a result, there was a slight drop in the number of people who took part in this years novena masses and the breakfast. But the Knights saw to that there was no drop in the festive atmosphere or in the manner we provided food for the people. In addition to helping the community to prepare for the celebration of Christmas, the Simbang Gabi celebration, just as the Guadalupe celebration generated substantial amount of income to the parish. Though the Knights of Columbus has only a few members, they play a major role whenever the church needs any help such as carrying out repair and maintenance work in and around the church, setting the hall and gym for the church events and doing the cleaning up work after the church events etc. I have to only contact their Grand knight by phone for carrying out any work and it can be taken for granted that the work is taken care. The Knights have become a big blessing to our church. Well done Knights. You are a blessing to St. Joachim church. December 16th to 24th 2014, in the evening we had Posada celebrations in the hall. In spite of the inclement weather, it was such a joy to see so many people, particularly the children taking part in the Posada celebrations. I express my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Jose Louis Gonzalez, Mr. Hector Pedraza and his beautiful wife Ms. Cristalina and all the others who in one way or another contributed towards the Posada celebrations. I could see so much of happiness on the face of children on the days of Posada celebrations. God bless you abundantly.

The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. JOACHIM CHURCH January 18, 2015

In the Parish this Week: January 19th Monday Martin Luther King Day The Rectory office, Faith Formation Office and the school will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday. Please be aware that there will be no meetings or other events held here on Monday.

Vatican Corner On November 8, 2014, Pope Francis made more key appointments intended to help bring about a change of mentality in the Vatican hierarchy. He is looking for a softer approach to applying Church law, and he thinks hes found that in French Moroccan Archbishop Dominique Mamberti. The Archbishop will replace U.S. Cardinal Raymond Burke as the highest judicial authority in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is looking to get procedural simplifications on marriage annulments, while also safeguarding the principle of the indissolubility of matrimony. In a Nov. 5th meeting with canon lawyers, Pope Francis said some procedures are currently so long and financially burdensome that people give up. In his new position, Archbishop Mamberti will be in charge among other responsibilities of final appeals for cases of marriage annulments as well as cases of conflict of competencies among Vatican departments. Appeals for marriage annulments have increased in recent years and Pope Francis wants his own appointee to be making the decisions. The position of the supreme judge is traditionally held by a cardinal, so Archbishop Mamberti can expect to be made a cardinal at the next formal meeting of cardinals. The replaced Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, 66, has been made the patron of the Order of Malta, an mainly honorary position which is usually assigned to cardinals who are at the end of their ecclesiastical career. While Francis has been Pope, Cardinal Burke, an outspoken conservative, has frequently voiced his concerns with some of the choices being made in Church governance. Nevertheless, as an active cardinal living in Rome, his capacity to communicate his opinions will remain the same if not greater since no significant office will be attached to him. British Archbishop Paul Gallagher has taken Archbishop Mambertis vacated position as the Vaticans second- in-command to the Secretary of State. Archbishop Gallagher is an astute, open-minded and humble worker, with diplomatic experience in Europe, and as an ambassador to Burundi, Guatemala and Australia. He was chosen also for his ability to fulfill a new diplomatic criteria required by Pope Francis. He wants diplomats to reduce the distance between themselves and mainstream society, engaging the secular world more in conversation. Diplomats have been asked to seek to understand situations and try to adapt to them in order to bring the light of the Gospel to them. Sources: Nationl Catholic Register , huffington post.com
