Gospel Value for September

RESPECT

I am respectful. I treat others and myself as we deserve to be treated. I show courtesy to everyone. I learn from the wisdom of my Elders. Principal’s Message

Welcome back from a great summer. We welcome new families to our community and St. Anne School. I am very excited to begin my third year at St. Anne School. I look forward to working with the students and parents of St. Anne’s community. Please join me in welcoming back Mr. Evan Loos in grade 6/7 for the school year. Also, join me in welcoming Ms. Valerie Favreau as our new French teacher. Mr. Horner is teaching grade 7 this year. Please welcome to our school Mrs. Gaylene Pilon as our medical facilitator. Ms. Heather Smith will work as our EAL teacher until Christmas. Mr. Wade Kindrachuk will resume EAL duties after Christmas. Please join us at our Meet the Staff Night on Tuesday, September 13. We will be serving a free burger to families from 5:30-6:30pm. We will have a short presentation from CSCC in the gym and classroom visits with your teachers will begin at 7pm until 8pm. As parents, you are the primary caregivers of your children. We encourage communication and value your input so that we can work together to create a positive learning experience for your children. As St. Anne School looks ahead in the coming years, our dynamic learning environment will continue to welcome and encourage parental engagement in the school. We are always looking for experts to assist in the inquiries occurring in the classrooms. We are all partners in your children’s learning and welcome your involvement and engagement in our school community.

God bless each of you this school year.

Lunch Canteen This year the grade 7 class will be running a food canteen at 12:00 for the rest of the year along with selling milk. This is a business inquiry where students will learn about running a business. We are offering punch cards for sale for $20.00. These will allow students to purchase food and drinks from the canteen. Each punch on the card is worth 50 cents. The menu will include such items as muffins, fruit, chicken soup, homemade lunchables and best of all jello. There will be advertised specials. Cards can be purchased at the office for $20.00 or students can pay directly at the canteen. Supervision Reminders We have noticed a growing number of students who are playing on the playground before and after school and coming to school prior to 8:30am. Please know that students should not be coming into the school prior to 8:30am as there is no supervision before that time. There is indoor supervision only from 8:30-9:00am. If your child needs care before or after school, we do have a Before and After School Program that is offered and available. Thanks for your cooperation. Nut Aware Please remember we strive to have an environment free of nuts for the safety of our students. Please do not send snacks or lunch with peanut or nut contents.

Before & After School Program Registration forms are available for the 2016-2017 school year. Forms can be picked up at the program or from the school secretary. Please use one form per family. Any questions or concerns please call Medie Mendoza at 954-4817.

Inquiry Corner #1

With each newsletter our hope is to inform and explore topics that will help you better understand the processes our St. Anne Inquiry-based learning community undertake throughout inquiry studies. The focus of this excerpt is “What is inquiry-based learning?” Imagine children who continually question why things look and function the way they do. Where their natural sense of wonder is at the centre of their learning and informs the direction it will take. Where knowledge is dynamic, collectively constructed and informed by many sources. Where children learn from each other. Where the teacher learns from the children. This is inquiry-based learning. Each newsletter our hope is to inform and explore topics that will help you better understand the processes our St. Anne Inquiry-based learning community undertake throughout inquiry studies.

Ideas to assist parents reading with their child Get ready to read!

Be sure to find a quiet place to read without distractions. Set up a time every day to read with your child. Have your child pick out his/her favorite books. Make sure that

your child selects books that aren’t too difficult. Don’t worry if the books your child chooses are a little easier than the ones he or she reads at school.

Take turns reading.

Before reading: Do a “book walk” – look at the cover, title, pictures in the book.

Predict what the book may be about. Look for difficult vocabulary and pre-teach. Relate what the book may be

about to the child. Encourage your child to ask questions and to comment on the story and pictures in a book – before, during,

and after reading it.

During reading: Give your child time to figure out tricky words, and show your child how he or she can learn from mistakes. Strategies for your child to try if he or she gets stuck on a word:

Think about what word would make sense in the story or sentence. Sound the word out. Think of a word that looks and sounds similar Think about word families and patterns. Look for parts of the word that are familiar. Think about what word would sound right in the sentence. Check the pictures and the punctuation marks for clues. Go back and read again. Ask for help with the word.

Strategies for your child to increase comprehension: Stop every little bit and ask the child what is happening to check on comprehension. Relate events to the child. Ask child to predict what may happen next. Encourage your child to think critically about the story. Does he or she agree or disagree with the

author? Why? Think out loud about the story as you read, and encourage your child to do the same. For example,

ask, “Does this make sense? Why or why not?” Show your child how to summarize a story in a few sentences. Discuss new words and difficult vocabulary meanings.

After reading: Talk about a story after your child has read it, to make sure that he or she understands it. Give your child time to think about the story, and then ask him or her about it again a few days later.

And last but not least, HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO

SHARE READING WITH YOUR CHILD
