Objec'ves • Develop and test methods for coopera1ve research with commercial
snapper grouper fishermen for predic1on and verifica1on of spawning aggrega1ons in the US South Atlan1c
• Verify spawning aggrega1on sites of anecdotally described mul'-‐species spawning aggrega'ons in the US South Atlan'c
• Foster a collabora1ve, par1cipatory research and monitoring program to:
– Inform and improve SEDAR stock assessments – Iden'fy, characterize, and design SMZs via an adap've process – Ul'mately provide a valuable data stream for the management of snapper/grouper – Ins'll par'cipatory and adap've, ecosystem based management prac'ces
South Atlantic Snapper Grouper AMENDMENT 36

Context • Declining Snapper Grouper Stocks in US South Atlan'c • Magnuson Stevens 2006 mandate to end overfishing • Warsaw grouper and Speckled hind highly reduced with
possible lis'ng on ESA. (Nassau grouper is in the final stages of lis'ng.)
• 240’ closure enacted and then removed • Expert Workgroup recommenda'ons modified and
reduced • “The hammer of regula'on is s'll over our heads” Mark
MarheYa • What op'ons are lef? – SA AP decided to evaluate the
possibility of SMZs to protect spawning habitat of snappers and groupers – par'cularly SH and WG

Spawning Aggrega'on
• Spawning – egg release • (could be pairs, small group or large aggrega'on)
• Spawning aggrega'on -‐ • Conspecific fish that have migrated and grouped together for the purpose of reproduc'on, in densi'es 3x normal (Domeier et al. 1997)
• Fish aggrega'on – • group of fish (could be for feeding, breeding, or simply normal schooling behavior, i.e. jacks)

• Hydrated oocytes in gonads of female fish
• Post ovulatory follicles in female gonads
Indirect Evidence
• Anecdotal informa'on • High CPUE of gravid (late
development stage) gonads • Underwater observa'ons
and photo/video documenta'on of courtship behavior and colora'on

Technique applica'on In water on boat
• Observe gamete release (d) • High percentage of late
stage gonads (indirect and not very diagnos'c)
• Photo/video of courtship (i) behavior and colora'on
• Anecdotal informa'on (i)
Laboratory
• Hydrated oocytes in gonads of female fish (d)
• Post ovulatory follicles in female gonads (d)

Anecdotal Informa'on
• MPA Expert workgroup and follow up interviews indicate Georgetown Hole, Warsaw Hole, Western Dry Rocks, and other sites are mul'-‐species spawning aggrega'on sites that harbor popula'ons of Warsaw grouper and speckled hind.
• Worthy of inves'ga'on

Schobernd, C.M., Sedberry, G.R., 2009.
• Scamp were observed displaying the “gray-‐head” courtship phase previously described by Gilmore and Jones (1992) at all dive loca'ons except Georgetown hole. Displays occurred at depths of 48–65 m, temperatures of 19.3–20.0 °C, and salinity of 36.6. This reproduc've behavior was seen in late July and early August, between 1000 and 1923 EDT.

If we had more funding
• Standardized monitoring protocol • Training for more observers • More on-‐the-‐water observa'ons in more places and more 'mes
• MARMAP needs support for addi'onal sample processing – especially histology
• Database development
South Atlantic Snapper Grouper AMENDMENT 36
K-49 Appendix K. Prediction & Verification of Spawing Aggregations in SA
Future Addi'onal Techniques and Ac'ons
• Passive hydro-‐acous'c monitoring – sounds of spawning
• Mapping biomass with dual-‐beam hydro-‐acous'cs • Greater par'cipa'on from more fishermen at more sites and more 'mes
• Observa'on reports – procedure for verifica'on of these reports
