From hunger

to hope

Millions are starving. More than half of

them are farmers; those who produce the

food. ironic, isn’t it? Farmers in West africa

struggle with infertile soil, drought and

a lack of water. due to their unbalanced

diet, one child out of three suffers from

malnutrition in the Bolivian highlands. in

the philippines, hundreds of farmers are

struggling against wealthy and powerful

landlords. For all these reasons, New World

works day after day for the right to food

for the poorest peopleeasants in the most

remote areas.

Because

hunger in the

world keeps

us awake at

nightNew World stands for sustainable change.

also in our own country we have to take

small steps to make that change. We

want to strengthen the solidarity with

the farmers. therefore we offer children,

youth and adults different ways to get

familiar with the reality of the poorer

global south.

New World improves the food security of the poorest far-mers. Simply put, it comes down to more, better and a bigger variety of food on the table. Thanks to hundreds of small scale initiatives such as vegetable gardens, water wells, rice fields, dams and small cooperatives we contri-bute concretely to a fertile future. Together we have one goal: food for the future.

Children can playfully empathize with the world of their African peers through the immersion programs of Bao-bab world class. Every year, as many as 80 classes (about 1750 pupils and 120 teachers), start their discovery tour with New World. We have a documentation center that contains a treasure of educational materials for students and teachersrs.

“Teacher Gino and his class designed posters and key rings in benefit of the refugees in Belgium: In this way the pupils realize they can do things themselves to help people. They don’t have to stand on the side line. Every gesture counts.

Our class has proven it’s possible.“

Every summer New World organizes exposure trips to Boli-via, the Philippines and West Africa. This provides a group of adults the opportunity to discover our partner countries in a unique way, and learn about the problems and solu-tions that exist for some of the world’s poorest people.

“I wanted to discover the world. See, hear and feel reality. Our host family in the slums of Manila (The Philippines) welcomed us with open arms. They had so little, but still wanted to share everything. I remember the lively and open discussions with the women as if it were yesterday. I will never forget these experiences and impressions.”

NeW WOrLd: a Matter OF kN(Gr)OWiNG!New World wants to provide a realistic image of the reality in the South. Therefore we organize different educational activities on food security issues. The annual ‘World Week-end’ offers information, lectures, debates and recreation for the whole family. You will also find us at events and festivals throughout Belgium.

New World always starts by assessing the needs, but also the strengths of the local farmers. We deliberately choose to collaborate with local NGO’s and farmer organizations. Through training and exchanges we guide and strengthen these organizations to become more independent. So they can take matters in their own hands after a few years. Making ourselves unnecessary, that’s what it’s all about for New World.

“I found the exposure trip amazing. I got to learn about myself there. Ever since I experienced this, I’m able to be satisfied with a lot less.”

Dwagulu Dekkente and New World provide youth from Bel-gium, Senegal and Burkina Faso an intensive intercultural exchange. Our youth work is part of Mundo Loco, the sup-port center for youngsters, secondary schools and associ-ations that sparkle with North-South initiatives!

Our website www.bevrijdewereld.be provides weekly news updates and more background information on our programs and activities in North and South.

“In the past I was only able to grow corn during the rainy season. Since the construction of the wells and the dams in the community I can harvest corn twice a year. We can even grow rice again, and vegetables are almost always available. Now my eleven children have enough food during the whole year.”

“One of the most important results of New World is the improved collaboration and solidarity between the villagers. Ever since we started the vegetable gardens and our cooperative, we haven’t only helped ourselves, but also many others. People are more determined to tackle malnutrition together, take their fate into their own hands and build a better future.”

“I have a poultry farm since three years. I need to sell chicken to have an income when my stock of cereals gets finished during the year. Thanks to this poultry farming, I can pay school for my children, pay rice and pay all other things for my

family that counts over 35 members.”

New World improves the availability, the access and the use of high quality food during the whole year in its interven-tion zone. The partnership between New World and WaterAid in Mali and in Burkina Faso strengthens the improvement of food security by reinforcing the availa-bility, the access and the use of drinking water and bet-ter hygiene conditions in the intervention zones. We are working together in 46 villages in Mali and 41 villages in Burkina Faso.

The lack of water is the main cause of food insecurity West Africa. There is not enough water for irrigation, and water wells don’t provide drinking water of good quality during the whole year. The five countries where New World is active, are suffering from a chronical food insecure si-tuation. The rainy season is too short (about five monthsa year) and the soil is getting infertile. The vegetation disappears due to deforestation, while wood is the princi-pal source of energy for a lot of households.
