The Jazz Department of the Prince Claus Conser-

vatoire is like no other jazz school. New York

Comes to Groningen is the name of this program:

a program that gives students the opportunity to

learn the values of tradition and exploration that

are associated with musicians on the New York Jazz

scene.

In addition to ongoing weekly instruction from a

world class Dutch faculty, each student receives

lessons from our visiting New York jazz faculty

which features Joris Teepe (bass and head of the

jazz department), Don Braden (sax), Robin Eubanks

(trombone), Ralph Peterson (drums), Alex Sipiagin

(trumpet), JD Walter (vocals), David Berkman

(piano) and Freddie Bryant (guitar).

These New York musicians each teach for one weekas part of a rotating system, each teacher returning

every 2 months or so for the duration of the school

year. Each guest New York teacher teaches private

lessons for the students who play the guest teachers

instrument, but guest teachers also teach history,

listening sessions, theory, ensembles and master

classes, covering subjects that concern every stu-

dent. Thus, unlike a lot of other schools that bring

in well known musicians to teach, ALL students

works with ALL of the guest teachers, irrespective

of the students instrument. Of course, students

also receive regular courses from the permanent

Dutch faculty. These courses include private

lessons, theory, ear training, jazz history, arranging

and a wide variety of performing ensembles. In

addition to this, renowned international musicians

such as Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman,

Gene Jackson, Kevin Mahogany and Bill Goodwin

make guest appearances, teaching master classes

and workshops.

A strong emphasis on playing

Joris Teepe and his colleagues are a faculty of sea-

soned professional musicians who have playedwith many of the greatest musicians in jazz. They

are part of the rich musical community of New York

City, the city that is the centre of the jazz world. This

life experience and commitment directly eects

how they teach; the New York Comes to Groningen

program is a more pragmatic, performance-

oriented way of studying jazz than what is often

taught at other conservatoires. This means that

when you enter the conservatoire, you will be per-

forming from the rst day. The theory that you

study is applied to real playing situations, and in

general classes are focussed on making you ready

to play jazz on the highest professional level. Piano

study, lessons in arranging and compositions all

nd quick applications in studio projects and stu-

dent performances. Your main subject forms the

central theme in your course of study, but playing in

ensembles (including a wide range of jazz groups,

fusion, latin and soul bands as well as traditional

big bands) is an important part of the curriculum.

Student-led ensembles are plentiful, both for

required concerts and exams as well as extra- curri-

cular jam sessions, world music ensembles and

other bands that oer a stunning array of originaldirections in improvised music. These bands are

performing regularly at the many jam sessions,

clubs and concert venues in Groningen and around

the Netherlands. For inspiration, world renowned

jazz musicians appear regularly in De Oosterpoort

(cultural center) and in the club circuit around Gro-

ningen. In the students third year, many students

Lunch Concerts by Jazz Students

Every weekday a lunch concert is given by jazz

students. A dierent student acts as the musical

director of each days concert, giving students the

opportunity to increase their performance expe-

rience and prepare for situations in which they will

present their own compositions and arrangements.These concerts bring a lively atmosphere to the

school and a supportive environment and sense of

community to the jazz department. These concerts

are also open to the public and free of charge.

Entry Requirements and particulars

Studying at the Prince Claus Conservatoire takes

four years of full time attendance. Foreign students

must have a High School Diploma or the equivalent.

Interested students must take an entrance exam (a

theory and eartraining test) and an audition (on the

students instrument.) Both tests are app roximately

20 minutes long and take place on the same day.

Students will be informed on the day of the audition

and exam whether or not they have been accepted.

The audition and exam together cost 25 euros. In

special cases, applicants may submit a videotape.

Het Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen biedt

studenten een unieke jazzopleiding. Onder de noe-

mer New York comes to Groningen biedt ons insti-

tuut onderwijs met als uitgangspunt de expertise

van de jazz scene uit New York.

Naast het reguliere onderwijs met minstens n

hoofdvakdocent per instrument, krijg je dagelijks

les van n van onze New Yorkse docenten: Joris

Teepe (bas en hoofd van de afdeling jazz), Don

Braden (saxofoon), Robin Eubanks (trombone),

Ralph Peterson (drums), Alex Sipiagin (trompet),

JD Walter (vocals), David Berkman (piano) en

Freddie Bryant (gitaar). Deze 8 docenten komen

steeds een week lang en wisselen elkaar af, zodater elke week les wordt gegeven door n van hen.

Hun lessen bestaan naast workshops en master

classes, ook uit theorie, solfge en geschiedenis.

Jij en je medestudenten krijgen les van ieder van

deze New Yorkse toppers, ongeacht je hoofdvak.

Naast de New Yorkse docenten is er een groep in

Nederland wonende docenten met een stevige

go to exchange programs with schools in Europe

and the United States.

And to really get to know the New York Jazz scene, a

school trip is organized each year to visit New York

and attend performances in clubs around the city.

Jazz as a career

After completing the program, you will be able to

work in a wide variety of musical ensembles. After

your graduation you are equipped to start a career

as a musician, performing in various ensembles and

in all styles of jazz. You know how to promote your-

self and your group, you can compose and arrange

music for all kinds of ensembles and orchestras. If

you complete all the teacher training course you

can teach at a music school or privately.

Music Styles

Even though the focus of the Jazz department is

Jazz, many other contemporary styles of music are

studied, such as fusion, latin and soul. We also make

use of the expertise of the classical department of

the conservatoire.

Workshops and Concerts by the New York JazzFaculty

Every Monday the visiting New York teacher of that

week presents a concert and workshop. Both the

concert and workshop are free of charge and open

to the public.

Direct het podium op

De podiumervaring die onze docenten hebben

als professionele jazzmusici, is direct van invloed

op hun manier van lesgeven. Die is meer op de

praktijk gericht dan men in Nederland gewend

is. Vanaf je eerste studiedag ga je optreden voor

publiek. Uiteraard krijg je veel theorie, maar het

gaat erom hoe je die kennis op het podium kunt

gebruiken. Je hoofdvak staat centraal, maar je

neemt ook deel aan ensembles. Er zijn een aantalvaste, zoals de bigband, het vocale ensemble,

diverse smallbands en een grote soulband. Maar

je speelt tevens in door jou zelf samengestelde

bands. Dat kan op onze eigen concertpodia en

daarnaast tijdens jamsessies en concerten in de

vele clubs en cafs van Groningen. Om inspiratie

op te doen kun je terecht in De Oosterpoort en

het clubcircuit waar regelmatig internationaal

vermaarde jazzmusici spelen. In het derde jaar

kun je als uitwisselingsstudent naar conservatoria

in Europa en Amerika. En om de New Yorkse jazz

scene echt te beleven organiseren we jaarlijks een

studiereis naar New York.

Het beroep van musicus

Na je studie kun je het podium op als musicus in

combos en bands in wisselende formaties. Je weet

hoe je jezelf als muzikant kunt verkopen en je bent

getraind in het schrijven van nieuwe composities

en arrangementen voor bands en orkesten. Als je je

onderwijsbevoegdheid hebt gehaald, kun je even-

eens aan de slag als muziekschool- of priv-docent.De studierichting Jazz biedt met al deze facetten

een uitstekende voorbereiding op een leven als

jazzmusicus.

Muziekstijlen

Het Prins Claus Conservatorium koos voor de term

Jazz, maar alle andere hedendaagse muziekstijlen

ppers doceren in Groningenkomen in de jazzopleiding uiteraard ook ruim-

schoots aan bod, zoals fusion, latin en soul. En we

werken met enige regelmaat samen in cross-overs

met de klassieke afdeling.

Master classes en concerten gastdocenten

Onze New Yorkse docenten geven elke maandageen concert met aansluitend een master class. Bei-

de zijn gratis toegankelijk voor belangstellenden

van binnen en buiten het conservatorium.

Lunchconcerten door studenten Jazz

Elke werkdag geven studenten een lunchconcert.

Deze concerten brengen niet alleen een leven-

dige en gezellige sfeer in de school, maar bieden

de studenten ook een goede voorbereiding op

de beroepspraktijk. Deze concerten zijn gratis

toegankelijk.

Toelatingseisen en bijzonderheden

De studierichting jazz is een voltijdse dagopleiding.

Je kunt worden toegelaten met een HAVO/VWO di-

ploma. Voordat je aan het conservatorium kunt stu-

deren, moet je een toelatingsexamen aeggen. Dit

examen bestaat uit twee delen: een theoretische

- en gehoorvormingstest en een praktisch examen.De onderdelen duren beide ongeveer 20 minuten

en vinden op n dag plaats. Of je bent toegelaten,

hoor je in principe dezelfde dag.

Dutch bass player Joris Teepe is a versatile jazz

musician. After his studies in Amsterdam he left

in 1992 for New York, where he studied with Ron

Carter and Peter Washington. In New York Joris

soon became a well-known bass player in the jazz

scene. He worked with Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker,

Chris Potter, Benny Golson, John Abercrombie, BillCosby, Seamus Blake, Renee Rosnes, Dado Moroni,

Kevin Hays, Steve Grossman, Carl Allen, Winard

Harper, Billy Drummond, Billy Hart, Rashied Ali and

many others.

As a bandleader Joris recorded 9 CDs. As a musician,

composer and arranger he made contributions

to around 60 other recordings. His compositions

have been recorded by more than 40 musicians.

Recently Joris formed his own Big Band and

released the critically acclaimed CD We take no

Prisoners on Challenge Records. Although being a

musician is his rst occupation, Joris also loves to

teach. Since 1993 he taught clinics in the USA, the

Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Korea, Slovenia and

Brazil. He is Adjunct Bass Professor at the Masters

Program at Queens College (NY) and he teaches at

the New Jersey Performing Arts Centre. In addition

to his position as head of the jazz department ofthe Prince Claus Conservatoire, Joris continues his

activities in his hometown New York and around

the world.

De Nederlandse bassist Joris Teepe is een veel-

zijdige jazzmuzikant. Na zijn studie in Nederland

verhuisde hij in 1992 naar New York, waar hij

lessen volgde bij Ron Carter, Peter Washington en

anderen. In New York wist hij als bassist verrassend

snel naam te maken. Hij heeft gewerkt met Tom

Harrell, Randy Brecker, Chris Potter, Benny Golson,John Abercrombie, Bill Cosby, Seamus Blake, Renee

door andere musici. Recentelijk formeerde Joris

zijn eigen Big Band en bracht de cd We take

no Prisoners uit bij Challenge Records. Deze cd

werd zeer goed ontvangen in zowel de Verenigde

Staten als in Europa. Hoewel hij in de eerste plaats

musicus is, proleert Joris zich ook als docent. Sinds

1993 heeft hij clinics gegeven in Nederland, de

Verenigde Staten, Itali, Korea, Sloveni, Brazili en

Duitsland: Hij is basdocent in de masteropleiding

van Queens College (NY) en docent aan het NewJersey Performing Arts Centre. Naast zijn werk als

hoofd van de jazzafdeling in Groningen, blijft Joris

ook actief in de jazzscene in zijn woonplaats New

York en tourt hij over de wereld.

Basgitaar, ensemble jazz

Mark Haanstra started with classical piano at

the age of 6. Switched to bass in his teens and

soon went to study bass guitar and double bass

at the Conservatory of Hilversum. He graduated

cum laude in September 1997 with an honorable

mention for composition.

Mark won several awards both in the Netherlands

and abroad, including twice the Dutch Jazz

Competition. In 2002 he won the Dutch Jazz

Competition with Agog

With his recognizable sound, groove and exibility

he is higly in demand in many genres. He worked

with Asko Schnberg Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble

en het Orchestra of the Royal Concertgebouw. He

toured the world with the Amsterdam Percussion

starring the world-famous drummers Terry Bozzioen Simon Phillips.

Mark is a member of a.o. Yuri Honings Wired

Paradise, Barnicle Bill (with John Engels and Miguel

Martinez), Agog and the Oxymore Quintet. Mark

gave concerts all around the world including the

United States, South America, Europe, the Baltic

States, North Africa and Asia.

Mark Haanstra begon met klassiek piano op zijn

zesde, waarna hij rond zijn vijftiende overstapte op

bas. Al vrij snel daarna studeerde hij basgitaar en

contrabas aan het Hilversums Conservatorium waar

hij in 1997 cum laude afstudeerde als uitvoerend

musicus met een bijzondere vermelding voor

compositie.

Hij won diverse prijzen in binnen en buitenland,

waaronder tweemaal het Nederlands Jazz

Concours. In 2002 won hij met de groep Agog de

Dutch Jazz Competition.

Zijn herkenbare geluid, groove en exibiliteit

maken hem veelgevraagd in zeer veel genres;

Zo werkt hij onder andere met Asko Schnberg

Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble en het Koninklijk

Concertgebouw Orkest. Samen met de Amsterdam

Percussion Group maakte hij verschillende tours

met de wereld beroemde drummers Terry Bozzio

en Simon Phillips.

Vaste groepen zijn onder meer Yuri Honings Wired

Koos Wiltenburg performed all over Europe in

concerts and festivals (such as the North Sea JazzFestival, Antibes, Cannes, Brussels) with the piano

trios of Harry Happel and Johan Clement. He also

worked with many musicians such as Lee Konitz,

Slide Hampton, Urbie Green, Dee Daniels, Charles

McPherson, Toots Thielemans, Georgie Fame, Hal

Singer, Benny Bailey, Tom Kirkpatrick, Dave Pike,

Marjorie Barnes and many more.


Koos recorded many CDs and was a producer for

a.o. Dee Daniels, Louis de Vries, the Johan Clement

Trio, the Hague Jazz Quartet and for classical cellist

Arturo Muruzabal. He also works as a composer

and leader of his own band.

Koos Wiltenburg speelde met het trio Intrioduction

van pianist Harry Happel en met het trio van pia-

nist Johan Clement door heel Europa en op vele

belangrijke podia en festivals zoals het North Sea

Jazz Festival, Antibes, Cannes en Brussel. Tevens

werkte hij met beroemde musici als Lee Konitz,

Contrabas

Paul Berner received his Masters degree in Classical

Double Bass Performance before moving to New

York City to concentrate on jazz full-time. There

he was asked to join the Red Rodney Quintet, and

later the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and the Monty

Alexander Trio. In addition he has performed the

world over, including at the White House, with

greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Stan

Getz, Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra, Peter

Erskine, Les Paul, Joe Lovano and many others.

Since his arrival in the Netherlands in 1990 Paul

has worked with European musicians like Michael

Moore, Jesse van Ruller, Toots Thielemans, and

Mathilde Santing. Paul has recorded three albums

under his own name and is featured on CDs with

Red Rodney, Monty Alexander, the Amsterdam Jazz

Quintet and Michael Moore, just to name a few.

Paul Berner studeerde klassieke contrabas

aan diverse instituten in de VS. Nadat hij was

afgestudeerd verhuisde hij naar New York en

besloot zich volledig te wijden aan de jazz. Hij

werd gevraagd om te spelen met beroemde bands

als the Red Rodney Quintet, the Lionel Hampton

Orchestra en het Trio van Monty Alexander. Hij


Bassplayer Jan Voogd is a very active performer,

in the Netherlands and abroad. He participated

among others with Cees Smal Quartet, Nico Bunink,

the John Clayton Big Band, the Soesja Citroen Band,

Peter Ypma + Eleven and the Big Band of Herman

Brood. While playing with these bands, he among

others got to work with Bob Malach, Sal Nistico,Kenny Wheeler, Sarah Vaughan, Dee Daniels, Monty

Alexander and Je Hamilton. Jan also played with

Chet Baker and Wim Overgaauw. In addition to

his many free-lance activities, Jan is currently

mainly playing in trio DIG dDIZ with Jan Menu

and Maarten van der Grinten, the Tilmar Junius Trio

and The Dutch Jazz Orchestra, conducted by John

Ruocco.

Bassist Jan Voogd is actief in vele jazzstijlen in

binnen- en buitenland. Hij maakte onder andere

deel uit van het kwartet van Cees Smal, het trio van

Nico Bunink, de John Clayton Big Band, de Soesja

Citroen Band, Peter Ypma + Eleven en de Big Band

van Herman Brood. Jan werkte ook met onder

andere Bob Malach, Sal Nistico, Kenny Wheeler,

Sarah Vaughan, Dee Daniels, Monty Alexander, Je

Hamilton, Chet Baker en Wim Overgaauw. Naastvele freelance bezigheden is Jan momenteel vooral

Freddie Bryant is a brilliant young guitarist and

composer. He has been educated in classical music

as well as in jazz music. During his studies Freddieplayed with jazz musicians such as Kevin Hays and

Steve Wilson, saxophone players Ralph Moore,

David Sanchez, Chris Potter, Don Braden, Mark

Turner, trumpet players Randy Brecker, Claudio

Roditi, Scott Wendholt, and piano players Renee

Rosnes, Jonny King, Larry Goldings, Edward Simon,

Edsel Gomez and many others.

Freddie is a very popular guitarist in the New York

jazz scene, where he plays with Ben Rileys Monk

Legacy Septet and the Mingus Orchestra. He is

in high demand in accompanying vocalists and

he frequently plays with musicians from Brazil.

He recently toured with singer Salif Keita, the

expert klezmer clarinettist Giora Feidman and jazztrumpet player Tom Harrel. He can be heard on

CDs by Tom Harrel, D.D. Jackson, Rosanno Vitro,

Mathilde Santing, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Sheila

Jordan.

Frank Wingold studied jazz and classical guitar

at the Hilversum Conservatory. Now he lives in

Cologne and is part of various local bands. In 2002

his trio agog won the Dutch Jazz Competition at

the North Sea Jazz Festival. Frank can be heard on

numerous CDs recorded with his own bands and

in other formations. He performs regularly in clubs

and at festivals all over Europe, in Russia, the USA

and Central America. He also teaches jazz guitar

at t he University of Applied Sciences Osnabrck

(Germany). He combines classical, jazz and rock

oriented techniques on acoustic and electric gui-

tars in his own unique style of improvising and

composing. His inuences include the classical

repertoire of the 20th and 21st century, traditional

and modern jazz, the history of rock music and the

music of eastern European and oriental cultures.

Frank Wingold studeerde jazz- en klassieke gitaar

aan het Conservatorium van Hilversum. Tegen-

woordig woont Frank in Keulen en maakt hij deel

uit van een aantal bands. In 2002 won hij met zijn

trio agog de Dutch Jazz Competition op het North

Sea Jazz Festival. Frank is te horen op talloze cds die

hij opnam met zijn eigen bands en met anderen. Hij

speelt regelmatig in clubs en op festivals in Europa,

Rusland, de Verenigde Staten en Centraal Amerika.

Naast het spelen in diverse bands, geeft Frank les

aan de Hogeschool in Osnabrck (Duitsland). Hij

combineert klassieke speeltechnieken met dieuit de jazz en rockmuziek op zowel elektrische als

akoestische gitaar en heeft die verder ontwikkeld

tot zijn eigen stijl van improvisatie en compositie.

Frank laat zich inspireren door het klassieke

repertoire van de 20e en 21e eeuw, traditionele en

moderne jazz, de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek

As a guitarist Winfred Buma took part in many pro-

jects and groups: from Mainstream to Free Music

from Big Band to duos. He received the Henri deWolf Jazz Award in 1992, for his contribution to

Jazzmusic in the city of Groningen. He played with

musicians such as Han Bennink, Greetje Bijma, John

Engels, Fred Leeang, Rein de Graa, Metronome

Bigband, Peter Niewerf, Noodband, the North

Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Ontstaan in

Grote Nood (opera by Gerard Ammerlaan), Rogier

van Otterloo, Wim Overgaauw, Horace Parlan, Toon

Roos, Swing de Paris and many others. Nowadays,

Winfred is busy playing with smaller groups, where

his subtle approach is in high demand.

Winfred Buma maakte als gitarist deel uit van

talloze projecten en groepen: van Mainstream tot

Impro, van Big Band tot duobezetting. Hij kreeg

in 1992 de Henri de Wolf Jazzprijs wegens zijn

verdienste voor de Groninger jazz. Hij speelde

Since moving to New York in 1985, pianist DavidBerkman has been an important part of the jazz

community. He has performed extensively with

the bands of Cecil McBee, Tom Harrell and with

the Vanguard Orchestra. He has worked with

many other great jazz musicians, notably Sonny

Stitt, Hank Crawford, Joe Lovano, Dick Oatts, Brian

teaches at the Aaron Copland School of Music at

City University of New York/Queens. He has just

Jasper is the xed pianist of the Dutch Metropole

Orchestra and the Till Brnner Band. Anybody who

has heard him play recognizes the abundance in

all the talents that the contemporary jazz musician

needs. His reading skills and awless technique

make him a highly sought after musician for large

ensembles, studio work and the accompaniment

of soloists, like Gino Vanelli, Bob Brookmeyer,

John Scoeld and Toots Thielemans, in a variety

of musical situations. Because of his dependability

Jasper was on call for singers like Oleta Adams,

while Herbie Hancock made a point of saying how

much he enjoyed playing together with Jasper.

Jasper has devoted his life to a deep study of jazz

and fusion styles and to really get into the basic

essentials of it. Thats why hes equally at home in

a New Orleans-type band and in a swing quartet or

a bebop group. The same goes for contemporary

forms of jazz and all kinds of fusion.

Marc van Roon is an improvising musician who com-

bines music performance with his work as a creative

coach for groups and organizations in change

and learning processes. He composed songs and

orchestra pieces for dance companies and various

music ensembles. He has produced several CDs

for other artists. Marc enjoys creating harmoniousalliances with gifted musicians and art ensembles.

On his path he collaborated with Dave Liebman,

Clark Terry, Art Farmer, Charlie Mariano, Billy Hart,

Santi Di Briano, Fay Claassen, Tineke Postma, Tony

Lakatos, Ernst Reijseger, Jesse van Ruller, Michael

Moore, and the Netherlands Dance Theatre. He co-

Bradens educational endeavors are a very impor-

tant part of his career. He is currently an adjunct in-

Performing Arts Centers Jazz for Teens program.

Braden has done master classes at educational insti-

tutions all over the U.S. and Europe.

Michael Moore studeerde aan het New England

Miguel Martinez studied alto saxophone at the

Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatoire with Tim

Armacost and Jim Hartog. He graduated with the

highest possible grade in 1992.

Miguel Martinez has won many awards and com-

petitions, among them: Swingin Groningen (with

his own quartet), 14th Europe Jazz Contest, Bel-

gium (with Meeting Point), Trossesjun Big Band

Festival (with Big Band Bos), International Jazz

Contest Getxo, Bilbao (with Martinez Move) and

the Heineken Crossover Award (with The Cool Col-

lective Bigband).

Miguel studied in New York, with a.o. Kenny Garrett,

Lee Konitz, Jackie McLean, Donald Harrison and

Dick Oatts. With his band Martinez Move he releas-ed his 4th CD: 4:51 AM.

Miguel is also well known for his organizing skills,

as he has organized many concerts and tours for

his bands Martinez Move, Miguel Martinez Trio

and Los Hermanos Martinez both nationally and

internationally. Recently he toured Europe with the

band Original Grooves featuring Dr. Lonnie Smith.

He is one of the steady members of the famous

Dutch New Cool Collective Big Band.

In 2009 Miguel started Barnicle Bill with Mark

Haanstra and John Engels. They released a CD and

are currently on tour in The Netherlands.

Miguel Martinez studeerde altsaxofoon aan het

Ralph has set and maintained standards in artistry,

creativity and excellence both as a leader and

a sideman for more than 25 years. The list of

musicians he has played with is a veritable whos

who of jazz including Betty Carter, Michael Brecker,

Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard

and Mulgrew Miller. Ralph is the last drummer

named by Art Blakey himself as a Jazz Messenger.

Ralph performed with the Jazz messenger two

drummer Big Band from 1983 until Blakeys passingin 1990. In December of 2000, Ralph subbed

for the legendary Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, at

Elvins request, at the Blue Note 19th Anniversary

Celebration. Most recently and as a leader Ralph

has been pivotal in the exposing of young talent

like Sean Jones and Orrin Evans. As an educator,

Ralphs list of former students includes Ari Honig,

EJ Strickland, Rodney Green, Mark Whiteld Jr.

and Justin Faulkner. He is now Full Professor at

Berklee College of Music and Artist in Residence

Prince Claus Conservatory in Holland as well as

an endorser and clinician for Mapex Drums, Vic

Firth Sticks and Bosphorus Cymbals where he has

designed and created The Oracle Cymbal series.

Ralph Peterson wordt al meer dan 25 jaar

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in musicfrom St. Marys College of Maryland, it was his

love of jazz that took Steve to Boston where he

continued his studies at Berklee College of Music,

years of valuable playing experience.

Robin Eubanks is the premier jazz trombonist of his

generation.

known music-method for children Look, Listen

& Play and he is the inventor and leader of a

successful course in improvisation in cooperation

with the UNISONO-foundation in Holland. Together

with the late prof. Lennart Winnberg (Gothenburg,

Sweden) Jilt has developed a European Project forintegrated studying of music (the Da Vinci Project).

Since 2008 Jilt is chairman of the Dutch Union

forArtists and Musicians.

Jilt Jansma is een uitstekende all-round trombonist

van Europa. Hij is volledig thuis in zowel de wereld

van de jazz als in de klassieke muziek. Sinds 1992 is

Jilt eerste trombonist in Het Gelders Orkest (HGO)

en daarvoor speelde hij 8 jaar lang mee als vast lid

van de fameuze radio bigband The Skymasters en

met The Netherlands Concert Jazzband. Jilt speelde

in o.a. Het Gelders Orkest, The Jazz Orchestra of

the Concertgebouw en The Beau Hunks. Ook is

hij vaste remplaant bij het Metropole Orkest.

Jilt heeft diverse master-classes gegeven en is

zeer nauw betrokken bij allerlei vernieuwende

ontwikkelingen binnen het muziekonderwijs in

Nederland. Hij is co-auteur van de bekende en

veel gebruikte lesmethode Horen, Lezen & Spelenen hij is iniatator en leider van de succesvolle

improvisatie-cursus van de stichting UNISONO.

Samen met de Zweedse prof. Lennart Winnberg

(overleden in 2008) heeft Jilt een Europese pilot

op het gebied van gentegreerd leren in muziek

georganiseerd. In 2008 is Jilt benoemd tot voorzitter

van de Nederlandse Toonkunstenaarsbond.

Jilt Jansma is an excellent all-round trombonists

in Europe. He is a professional musician in both

jazz and classical music. Jilt holds a position as

principal trombonist in the Arnhem Philharmonic

Orchestra (HGO) since 1992 and before this he was

a member of the famous Dutch radio big bandThe Skymasters and the Netherlands Concert

Jazzband for eight years. Jilt played a.o. with HGO,

The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and

The Beau Hunks. He is a regular substitute with

the Metropole Orchestra. Jilt has given various

master classes and he is closely involved in many

innovative developments within music education

and universities throughout the United States

are performing Robins original works and have

arranged his music for their ensembles.

Robin Eubanks is een van de meest vooraanstaande

trombonisten van zijn generatie. Of hij nu speelt

met een van zijn eigen bands EB3 of Mental Images,

of met het beroemde Dave Holland Quintet of

zijn Bigband, Robin maakt op zijn publiek altijd

opgenomen met zijn eigen muziek. Hij heeft

samengewerkt met beroemde artiesten als Art

Blakey, Elvin Jones, Eddie Palmieri, Sun Ra, Barbra

Streisand, The Rolling Stones en Talking Heads, om

er een paar te noemen. Hij heeft Grammy Awards

gewonnen met Michael Breckers Wide Angles en

Dave Hollands What Goes Around.

Robin is als docent jazz trombone verbonden

aan het Oberin College Conservatorium (VS)

en geeft veel masterclasses en workshops in

de Verenigde Staten en de rest van de wereld.

Daarnaast is Robin een veelgevraagd componist.Veel van zijn composities zijn opgenomen door

het Dave Holland Quintet en de Dave Holland

Bigband, en een aantal van zijn arrangementen

zijn opgenomen door de Mingus Big Band. Robins

composities staan op de lessenaar van een groot

aantal muziekscholen en conservatoria in de

Verenigde Staten.

Born in Russia, Alex Sipiagin studied classical music

and jazz at the Moscow Music Institute and the

Gnessin Conservatory. In 1990, Alex participated

in the International Louis Armstrong Competition

sponsored by the Thelonius Monk Institute in

Washington D.C. winning top honors and soon

after relocated to the jazz mecca of the world, New

York City.

Alex soon became a favored player for various

bands including the Gil Evans, Gil Goldsteins Zebra

Coast Orchestra, the George Gruntz Concert Jazz,

drummer Bob Moses band Mozamba, Mingus Big

Band as well as the Mingus Dynasty and Mingus

Orchestra, and the Dave Holland Big Band and

Sextet. In 2003 he recorded with Michael Breckers

Quindectet touring also with the Michael BreckerSextet. Alex has also worked with Eric Clapton, Dr.

John, Aaron Neville, Elvis Costello, Michael Franks,

Dave Sanborn, Deborah Cox, legendary producer

Phil Ramone, etc., with many of the recordings

becoming Grammy nominations and winners.

As a soloist, Sipiagin has eleven recordings to his

credit, touring extensively throughout Europe, U.S.,

Japan and Russia with his own group. He taught at

New York University, and conducts master classes

and workshops clinics worldwide.

Alex Sipiagin werd geboren in Rusland en

The American trumpet player Kurt Weiss has

performed with various artists such as Aretha

Franklin, Frank Foster, Steve Grossman, Natalie Cole,

Donna Summer, Rosemary Clooney, Mel Torme and

Bobby Short. Weiss has toured extensively as a

trumpet soloist with the Orchestras of Ray Charles,

Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey. While

residing in New York, he has also performed with

the orchestras of Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mario Bouza,

Maria Schneider, Barry Harris and the Village

Vanguard Monday Night Orchestra.

Other performances include tours with his own

groups in the United States and Europe, numerous

broadway theatre orchestras, television shows and

recordings.

Kurt has been living in the Netherlands since 2001

and he makes frequent tours through Europe with

various European bands. He is also the conductor

of the West Coast Big Band.

De Amerikaan Kurt Weiss trad hij op met vele

Vocalist JD Walter has been compared to many

vocal Titans, but his style is uniquely his own,

and he has become a singular phenomenon on

the music scene. Respected and lauded by the

great musicians of the contemporary circuit, J.D.

has shared the stage and recorded with many

legendary artists. J.D. has currently recorded 5 CDs

and he has been a guest artist on many CDs. He is

a member of pianist Orrin Evans Luvpark band.

JD has been a featured artist at countless American

jazz festivals and clubs, and performed at numerousfestivals all over the world.

JD is in demand as a clinician at schools and

universities, performing numerous clinics for the

National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences

and the Music Educators National Conference.

He has taught at various institutions such as the

prestigious Sibelius Conservatory in Helsinki

Finland, The University of North Texas and The

Moscow Music Consort, to name a few. JD is a

regular on the Music Scene in New York having

headlined at such venues as, Lincoln Center, The

Jazz Standard, the Tribeca Performing Arts Center,

and the famed 55 Bar.

Vocalist JD Walter wordt wel vergeleken met

grootheden uit de jazz, maar hij heeft een unieke

eigen stijl, waardoor hij een veelgevraagd zanger

is geworden. Hij wordt gerespecteerd en geprezen

door beroemde hedendaagse musici en en heeft

met velen van hen gespeeld. JD heeft 5 cds

opgenomen met eigen werk en hij is te horen

op een groot aantal opnames als gastartiest.

Hij is de zanger van een van de bands van Orrin

Evans, Luvpark. JD heeft opgetreden op talloze

Amerikaanse festivals en in clubs, maar ook op

buitenlandse festivals is hij regelmatig te horen.

JD heeft les gegeven aan prestigieuze instituten als

het Sibelius Conservatorium in Helsinki (Finland),

The University of North Texas en The Moscow

Music Consort en geeft regelmatig master classes

en workshops aan conservatoria in binnen-en buitenland. Tegenwoordig is hij als docent

verbonden aan The Aaron Copeland School of

Music en The New School in New York. JD treedt

veelvuldig op in de jazz scene van New York in

bijvoorbeeld Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, the

Tribeca Performing Arts Center, en de beroemde 55

Bar.

Prince Claus Conservatoire GroningenVocals

Floor van Zutphen started her professional singing

career in 1973 with the Houseband. She was a

member of Herman Brood and his Wild Romance

in the years they dominated the charts. In 1979

she recorded her rst solo album. She worked

with various artists such as Simone Kleinsman

and the Brecker Brothers. She made several radio

programmes, she sang and acted in music theatreproductions and she was the vocal coach for

Paul de Leeuw, Carice van Houten and the Dutch

versions of the musicals Rent and The Lion King.

She recently recorded the CD Worth a Journey

with a.o. Koos Wiltenburg, Miguel Martinez and

Don Braden, also teachers at the Prince Claus

Conservatoire.

Teaching has always been an important part of

Floors singing career. She has been a guest teacher

at the conservatoires of Utrecht, Rotterdam and

Amsterdam. In addition to her private teaching and

workshop leading, she is also vocal coach at the

Amsterdam Theatre School and Dance Academy

Lucia Marthas.

Floor van Zutphen begon als professioneel

zangeres bij de Houseband in 1973. Ze maakte

bracht ze haar eerste soloalbum uit. Tijdens haar

veelzijdige carrire, waarin ze regelmatig heeft

opgetreden in binnen- en buitenland werkte ze

met een grote variteit aan artiesten zoals Simone

Kleinsma en The Brecker Brothers. Floor maakte

diverse radioprogrammas, zong en acteerde in

meerdere muziektheaterproducties en was vocal

coach van onder andere Izaline Calister, Fracien

van Tuinen, Paul de Leeuw, Carice van Houten

en de Nederlandse versies van de musicals Rent

en De Lion King. In 2007 nam ze de cd Worth a

Journey op, waaraan onder andere docenten

Koos Wiltenburg, Don Braden en Miguel Martinez

meewerkten.Floor heeft sinds het begin van haar zangcarrire

een priv lespraktijk, geeft les op conservatoria

en leidt vele workshops. Ze was onder andere

gastdocent aan de Conservatoria van Utrecht,

Rotterdam en Amsterdam. Floor is tevens docent

aan de Amsterdamse Theaterschool en de Dans-

academie Lucia Marthas.

Francien van Tuinen won in 1997 het Nederlands

Vocalisten Concours en studeerde in 1998 af aan het

Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. Zij trad

veelvuldig op met haar eigen kwintet, maar ook

met big bands en orkesten als het Jazz Orchestra

van het Concertgebouw en het Metropole Orkest.

Ook nam zij een aantal cds op.

Franciens debuut-cd Tuindance (98) werd zeer

goed ontvangen in de pers en in maart 2002 bracht

ze haar 2e cd Despinas Eye uit die werd gepro-

duceerd door Yuri Honing met als gastsolist saxo-

fonist Benjamin Herman. Haar huidige projecten A

perfect Blue Day en Muzyka zijn het resultaat van

haar intensieve samenwerking met gitarist Jesse

van Ruller, die in 1995 de prestigieuze Thelonious

Monk Award won. Francien en Jesse werden voor

Muzyka genomineerd voor een Edison.Franciens meest recente kwartet is Tripod; in

een ongebruikelijke combinatie van rietblazers,

contrabas, drums en zang spelen zij akoestische

jazz die origineel en driedimensionaal klinkt. De cd

Daytripper kwam uit in de lente van 2009.

After winning the Dutch Jazz Vocalist Concours in

1997 and graduating from the Prince Claus Con-

servatoire in Groningen in 1998, Francien van

Tuinen recorded and performed with a variety of

groups and projects; with her own quintet but al-

so with big bands and symphony orchestras such

as The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and

the Metropole Orchestra. Franciens debut album,

Tuindance (98) received very good press and in

March 2002 she released her second CD called

Despinas Eye, produced by Yuri Honing, with saxo-

phonist Benjamin Herman as a guest.

Her current projects, A perfect Blue Day and

Muzyka are the results of her cooperation with

guitarist Jesse van Ruller, who won the prestigious

Thelonious Monk Award in 1995. Francien and

Jesse were nominated for the most importantDutch music award, the Edison for Muzyka.

Her latest quartet is called Tripod; in an exciting

combination of reeds, double-bass, drums and

vocals this music is a trip back to acoustic jazz in

an unconventional line-up. Tripod sounds original

and three-dimensional. The cd Daytrippers was

released in spring 2009.
