Sacramental Life Fr. Russ

It was a good retreat for me the other

week. The retreat centered around the

Ignatian Way, a spirituality developed

nearly 500 years ago by St. Ignatius of

Loyola who was also the founder of the

Jesuit Order. Ignatius was a Spanish

soldier who was wounded on the

battlefield. He established the Jesuits,

known as the Society of Jesus, in 1540 and instructed

early Jesuits to “go out and find God in all things. This

is the unique spirituality of the Jesuit Order. The

Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola are often

described as Ignatius’s greatest gift to the world. The

basic thrust is to make us more aware/attentive to

God’s presence and activity and therefore, enable us to

be responsive to God’s calling in our life.

One of the dynamics I particularly appreciate about

the Ignatian Way is the Daily Examen – an end of day

spiritual review that involves prayerfully recollecting

moments during our day when God was most active,

or not, followed by a decision on our part to act in

some way. (This would be a good practice for us as we

look back upon our Liturgical year to consider the

Feast of Christ the King we celebrate today) Our

retreat Director, Fr. Steven Jones, used the image of

desolation/consolation throughout the retreat. There

are times, especially during this Pandemic, when I am

sure we all have felt desolate. When experiencing this

desolation, we are called upon to allow God to work

in our lives to the point we experience God’s

consolation. Thus, Ignatian Spirituality is not merely

an inward journey, much less a self-absorbed one. It

aims to bring us closer to God and more deeply into

the world of wounds and hurts with gratitude, passion,

and humility.

There are many ways to pray and I find the Ignatian

Way to fit my personality as it is so much in line with

12 step spirituality. So often in the spiritual life, we

must put one foot in front of the other to experience

God’s presence and activity in our lives and

world. May we continue to pray for one another

during these, at times, periods of

desolation to experience our loving

and merciful God’s consolation.

God bless and have a good week.

Please remember in your prayers,

Kathleen Nogosek†

Wife of: Robert

May Kathleen and the all the souls of the

faithfully departed, through the

mercy of God, rest in peace.

May the waters of baptism call to mind our

baptism into Christ who has redeemed us by his

death and resurrection. We welcome in

baptism:

Our Congratulations!

should go on.”

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

First Reading:

The prophet Daniel has a vision of the “everlasting do-

minion” of the “son of man.” Why do think the Lord

revealed this vision to Daniel?

Second Reading:

John teaches his community that Jesus “has made us

(believers) into a kingdom, priests for his God and Fa-

ther.” How should knowledge of this reality affect

your spiritual journey?

Gospel:

In his trial Jesus tells Pilate that his kingdom is not of

this world. What do you think prevents the Kingdom

of God from being more fully present in our world?

The Catholic Campaign for Human

Development

The money you give to CCHD works to break the

cycle of poverty by helping low-income people

participate in decisions that affect their lives, families

and communities. In 2021, the CCHD collection

helped fund three local initiatives. The funds enabled

homeless families in Rochester to find stable housing

through Family Promise Rochester. They also helped

to empower immigrant children in the Worthington

area with leadership skills and college readiness

through the Dream Catchers Program. Lastly, the funds

from CCHD helped provide financial literacy classes to

people in poverty throughout the Diocese through the

work of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Please give

generously to help provide a hand up for those in

poverty in our community and across the country!
