This concert was presented for the University by the visiting Chamber Music Group of the Conservatory of Music, University of the Philippines. The programme featured the renowned String Quartet in Residence at the Conservatory, which is composed of Miss Celia Sucgang, first violinist; Mrs. Rizalina E. Buenaventura, second violinist; M r. Celso Estrella, violist and M r. Martiniano Esguerra, cellist; and such distinguished artists as M r. Aurelio Estanislao, baritone; Mrs. Andrea O. Veneracion soprano; and M r. Regalado Jose, pianist. They are all professors and ranking faculty members of the various music departments of the University of the Philippines. The Chamber Music Group came to Hong Kong on a concert tour of Southeast Asia designed by the Univer sity of the Philippines with the purpose of fostering good w ill among universities in the region. SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO VICE-CHANCELLOR Dr. Francis S. Hutchins, Representative of the Yale-in-China Association in Hong Kong, has been appointed Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, with effect from 3rd May, 1968. Dr. Hutchins, retired President of Berea College, Kentucky, joined the University in September, 1967, UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS The 1968 Degree Examinations (Part I and Part II) were held from 15th to 22nd May, 1968, the written papers at New Asia College, and the science practicals in the laboratories of the three Colleges. 471 students entered for Part I Examination and 496 for Part II Examination as follows :- Chung Chi New Asia United Part I 166 171 134 Part II 174 149 152 Part I & Part II 5 11 5 The Intermediate Examination was held from 11th to 15th June, 1968, at New Asia College with 439

SUMMER COURSES

U n ite d College in co-operation w ith the W illia m s -in - H ong K o n g Program, is again o ffe ring a special sum m er school fo r teachers o f p rim a ry and secondary schools.

T h e course w ill inc lude intensive tra in in g in spoken E ng lish by means o f live oral d r ills and language laborato ry exercises. T h e facu lty w i l l be made up o f recent graduates o f W illia m s College, U n ited States. T he course w il l run from 22nd Ju ly to 25th August.

A sum m er art course w ill be given by the D epartm ent o f F ine A rts o f New Asia College w ith the purpose o f developing Chinese trad ition a l cu ltu re and p ro m otin g a rtis tic com m unica tion between the East and the W est.

△ Professor M a rk Perlm an, Chairm an o f the D epartm ent o f Econom ics at the U n ive rs ity o f P ittsbu rgh , was a guest o f the U n ive rs ity from 3rd to 9th M ay.

D u rin g his stay, Professor Perlman delivered a pu b lic lecture in tw o parts on “ T h e R e lationship o f D em ographic Change, P ub lic H ealth Investm ent, and Econom ic G ro w th " . He m et w ith V ice-C hance llo r C h o h -M in g L i on 4th M ay.

Professor Perlm an had taught at H arvard , C orne ll, H aw a ii and Johns H opk ins U n ivers ities before jo in ing the U n iv e rs ity o f P ittsbu rgh as a Professor o f Economics and H is to ry and Econom ics in H ea lth at its G raduate School o f P ub lic H ealth . Since 1965, he has been the Chairm an o f the D epa rtm en t o f Econom ics. H is many pub lica tions inc lude H u m a n Resources in the Ur ban Economy {1963) , He a l t h M a n p o w e r in a Developing Economy {1967) , and The Met hodology o f Economic Investment in Publ i c He a l t h Programs.

A t the in v ita tio n o f the U n ive rs ity , Professor L iu de livered a pu b lic lecture in M anda rin on "E m p e ro r Sung K ao T 's u n g " on 6th M ay, and another lecture in E ng lish on "T h e P o litica l C o nd ition o f Southern S ung" on 8th M ay, at New Asia College.

Professor L iu is an a u th o rity on the study o f the h is to ry o f the Sung D ynasty. H is m any pub lica tions inc lude "R e fo rm in Sung C h ina : W ang A n -S h ih and the R e fo rm P o lic ies" published in E ng lish in 1959, and “ O u-Y ang H s iu , an 11th C entu ry C onfuc ian is t ” pub lished in 1967.

Professor L iu is a m em ber o f the Sung Project cu rre n tly headed by Professor H e rbe rt Franke o f the U n ive rs ity o f M u n ich .

In Europe M r . Y oung v is ited the offices o f the In te r- U n ive rs ity C ounc il fo r H ighe r Education Overseas in Lond on and the G erm an Academ ic-Exchange Service in Bonn.

聯合書院商學及社會科學學院院長兼工商管理學�

系主任司徒新博士,應香港科學管理協會之邀,出任�

該協會之人事管理委員會主席,而該院工商管理學系�

講師孔惠廉先生,則任該委員會委員。�

大專杯男子羽毛球比賽,由四月初起連續舉行至�

五月中旬始告結束,新亞書院代表除榮獲本年度冠軍。�

新亞書院敎職員聯誼會與該院學生會,近在荃灣�

聯合書院工商管理學系講師張健民先生,應香港�

科學管理協會之邀,曾主講「小型企業人事管理」課�

新亞書院董事會經聘請工商日報經理何鴻毅先生�

爲該院新董事。又該院董事會有八位董事之任期,將�

於本年七月三十一日屆滿,業經各有關機構推舉其續�

任董事,爲期三年。�

崇基學院史地系講師梁蘄善先生,業經本大學同�

意,給予硏究補助金,俾其繼續從事「香港及九龍都�

市土地利出」之硏究計劃。關於尖沙咀及中環兩地區�

之調査工作,業已完竣,現方在九龍各地區進行硏�

究,詳細調査工作可望於今秋完成。�

聯合書院圖書館,最近獲得西德葛特思璧温泉鎮�

之德國硏究院,以若干德文圖書相贈,計有八十七�

種項目,共一百九十冊,其中包括有精選之參考書藉�

多本,如「Der Grosse

Duden」,「Das Fischer

Lexikon」,德國文學,歷史及戲劇等專集,又有漢�

堡版之歌德全集,德國現代戲劇作家布勒希德全集,�

曁字源學等書,此類書藉,將爲本大學學生進修德文�

新亞書院硏究所,於五月九日舉行茶會,招待該�

所名譽硏究員,現任美國普林斯頓大學中國歷史講座�

敎授劉子健博士。劉敎授於席間,曾以其本人之經�

驗,談論從事學術硏究者所應具備之語文條件。新亞�

各學院開設暑期進修班�

本大學聯合書院,今夏又與美國威廉士大學合作,�

共同舉辦特別暑期英語進修班,以利本港中小學校敎�

師之進修。�

該班課程內容,包括有英語會話之練習,及語言實�

驗室之實習。所有課程,均由美國威廉士大學畢業�

生現在聯合書院任職者担任。上課時間由七月二十二�

起至八月廿五日止。�

本校新亞書院藝術學系,亦開辦暑期藝術班、其目�

的在發揚中國固有文化,及促進東西藝術之交流。�

該班所設科目計有:國畫、西洋畫、裝飾畫,書�

法、印畫、藝術設計及藝術欣賞等科,槪由該系敎師�

講授。凡有興趣於藝術者,均得於七月十一日至十七�

日期內,向該系報名參加。上課時間共歷五週,由七�

月十八日起至八月廿一日此。�

過去數年來,經參加該藝術班進修之學生,在小學�

校任藝術敎員者頗多,而中學生之準備入新亞書院藝�

術學系進修者,亦復不少。�

日本政府文部省獎學金�

日本駐港總領事函告本大學,謂日本教育當局業經�

同意,以日本政府「文部省獎學金」,獎助崇基學院�

學生余均灼君及余冠初君二人,於一九六八至六九年�

度,在日本東京大學日本語文學系,以外國學生之資�

格,進修大學本科課程。�

大學公開學術演講�

美國畢茨堡大學經濟學系主任柏爾文敎授(Prof.

Mark Perl

man)�,於五月三日至九日來港,爲本大�

學之嘉賓。柏氏留港期間,曾在本大學作公開學術演�

講,分兩階段演講「人口狀況之變化,公共衞生之建�

設,與經濟發展之關係」,並於五月四日拜訪大學校�

長李卓敏博士。�

柏爾文教接曾在哈佛,康尼爾,夏威夷及約翰士哈�

京斯各大學敎學,其後轉就畢茨堡大學經濟學及歷史�

學敎授,兼該校公共衞生硏究院之衞生經濟學敎授,�

并自一九六五年以來,卽任該大學經濟學系主任。柏�

氏著述豐富,計有:「城市經濟之人力來源」(一九�

六三年出版);「開發經濟之衞生事業人力」(一九六�

七年出版);及「公共衞生計劃中之經濟建設方法」�

等著作。�

柏爾文敎授常訪問海外各地,曾於一九六〇年參加�

公共衞生考察團訪問巴西,又於一九六二至六四年,�

參加醫務人力考察圑訪問台灣,並曾以富柏萊學者之�

身份,前往澳洲訪問。�

美國普林斯頓大學東方文化硏究兼歷史學敎授劉�

子健博士,於五月四日至十一日,到本港訪問,並担�

任本大學歷史科之校外考試委員。�

劉氏應本大學之邀請,於五月六日作公開學術演講�

,以國語講述「宋高宗其人其事」,又於五月八日,�

在新亞書院發表另一次演講,以英語講述「南宋政治�

情況」。�

劉敎授爲硏究宋史權威,著作豐富,計有:「王安�

石及其新政」之英文版一書,已於一九五九年刊行問�

世,及「十一世紀之儒家歐陽修」一書,則於一九六�

七年方告出版。�

卜博士任公職凡二十六年之久,常以協助計劃,領�

崇基學院院長容啓東博士,偕同其夫人,於五月�

菲律賓大學音樂團舉行音樂會�

菲律賓大學音樂學院之音樂團,於五月十八日至二�

十二日來港訪問。菲律賓大學此次派遣該團前往東南�

亞各地作旅行演奏,其目的在與該地區各大學建立良�

好之關係。�

五月二十日,該團爲本大學在大會堂舉行音樂會。�

其節目包括古典音樂、現代架曲及菲律賓名曲,本校�

敎職員及嘉賓蒞臨欣賞該團音樂者頗衆。當晚所演奏�

者,有弦樂四重奏,以首席小提琴家薛琼小姐(Miss

Celia

Sucgang),第二小提琴家蒲娜温夫人(Mrs.

Rizalina

E. Buenaventura)�,中提琴家艾斯勒先�

生(Mr. Celso

Estrella)及大提琴家艾嘉拉先生(Mr.

Martiniano Esguerra)

�等共同演奏;並有艾丹尼�

先生(Mr. Aurelio

Estanislao)

�唱男中音,文妮拉夫�

人(Mrs. Andrea

O.

Veneracion)唱女高音,及杜�

西先生(Mr. Regalado

Jose)

�彈奏鋼琴,俱屬極負�

盛名之音樂家。該團團員係菲律賓大學音樂學系之敎�

校及高級敎師。�

何欽思博士任校長特別助理�

何欽思博士(Dr. Francis

Hutchins)爲美國根�

德基州貝利亞大學前任校長,自榮休後,卽於一九六�

七年九月前來本大學,任雅禮協會駐港代表。由一九�

六八年五月三日起,何欽思博士奉委爲本大學校長之�

特別助理。�

學位考試及中期考試�

本大學於一九六八年五月十五日至二十二日,在新�

亞書院舉行一九六八年學位考試,考第一段及第二段�

之筆試,而理科實驗試,則分別在三成員學院之實驗�

室舉行。參加第一段考試之學生凡四七一人,參加第�

二段考試者則有四九六人。茲將考生人數分列如下︰�

大學敎務會曁大學本部考試委員會,最近舉行聯席�

會議,議决:凡學生參加本年六月舉行之中期考試,�

而有某科不及格者,應於今年九月第一週再行補考。�

關於補考之詳細辦法,卽將予以公佈。�
