Kumari middag in Adelante college

Het nieuwe jaar staat alweer voor de deur en dit keer hebben we de leiding van de projecten die we ondersteunen gevraagd om terug te kijken op het afgelopen jaar. Voor ons als stichting een speciaal jaar waarin we ons tweede lustrum vierden en het HRDC (kinderziekenhuis en revalidatie centrum) toevoegden aan ons programma. In september kwam op uitnodiging van Adelante zorggroep en stichting Kumari een afvaardiging van het HRDC en de Kavre deaf school naar Nederland. Dit alles met financiële hulp van Vooruit, stichting voor kinderen met een handicap. Doelstelling was het uitwerken van de samenwerking tussen Adelante, stichting Kumari en HRDC en het uitbreiden van de informatie rondom hoorapparaatjes binnen de Kavre deaf school.

Bezoek uit Nepal! Eind september kwamen een afvaardiging van het HRDC en de directrice van de Kavre deaf school op uitnodiging van Adelante kinderen en Stichting Kumari naar Nederland. Een en ander werd mogelijk gemaakt door financiële ondersteuning van de stichting Vooruit, stichting voor kinderen met een handicap. In het twee weken durende bezoek werd Adelante kinderen uitgebreid bezocht. Verder werden er contacten gelegd met de afdeling orthopedie van het AZM te Maastricht, Zuyd Hogeschool te Heerlen, Defauwes in Heerlen, Guido schoenen orthopedie te Vaals en de Universiteit in Maastricht. Het was een inspirerend bezoek en de plannen voor samenwerking zijn veel duidelijker geworden. Hierdoor ontwikkelen zich heel wat mogelijkheden om in de komende jaren steun te geven aan de opvang van de vele lichamelijk gehandicapte kinderen in Nepal. Maar ook omgedraaid valt er heel wat te leren van een organisatie als het HRDC, waar zo veel met zo weinig gedaan wordt. In februari 2013 zal tijdens het werkbezoek aan onze projecten in Nepal door de stichting Kumari deelgenomen worden aan een ‘field camp’ naar het westen van Nepal. Hier is medische hulp slecht voor weinige mensen toegankelijk. Het is het gebied van ‘the unreached’. Doel van zo’n trip is het registreren, in kaart brengen van kinderen met een lichamelijke handicap. Wij gaan als stichting mee om ter plekke de situatie van lichamelijk gehandicapte kinderen te bekijken. Kleine impressie van het verblijf van onze gasten:

HRDC in Banepa On September 29 we arrived from Kathmandu to Brussels for a two week visit. Objectives for this visit were to identify potential areas of collaboration through observation and involvement; to attend the ten year's celebration of Kumari Foundation and finally share HRDC's experience on pediatric physical rehabilitation and observe rehabilitation model in use in the Netherlands Exchange visit was very good and useful because discussions took place on relevant matters. The visit gave us opportunities to observe good model of rehabilitation run by total government support. We are looking forward to work together in the coming years to improve the care for the disabled children in Nepal. Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Executive Director

Voor en na behandeling! Zo’n vooruitgang gun je toc h ieder kind! Het LDC in Sankhu The year 2012 is leaving us shortly however it has had a lot of influence! Despite of all downs during the year along with illness and country’s situations, we have put our utmost for the overall well-being of the residents who are intellectually disabled. A lot of progress could be seen in them thus making us more motivated. This year round, the sensory room was more into function than it used to be. With the colorful plastic plate moving around the light source that strikes at the mirror ball, the aroma of sweet smell, the soft melodious music of various natural sounds, the soft dolls around with mouth sweetening eatables make it almost to be the best place for these residents to have all the sensory inputs. Some among all those residents have had a lot of positive changes while some are still in progress. The sure thing is everyone likes being in the room where they have a different secure environment where they feel like relaxed with peace of mind. And for some who are hyper aggressive in nature tends to have a sweet flow in their body and mind ultimately luring them to take a sound nap.

Holi is a festival which is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of February. Generally, people form a group or walk around the neighbors to celebrate by exchanging various colors and spray/throw colored water on one another. This festival of colors is believed to take away all the sorrows and make life more colorful along with fun filled and cherishing moments. Here at LDC, we celebrated Holi with exchange of various colors on one another. Since the residents who are intellectually disabled are sensitive to cold, we avoid use of spraying water. However, avoiding of water can never decrease the fun. Even the young aged children loved playing with colors as the environment got colourful very soon once we started playing.

At LDC, everyone (teachers and students) all live together as a family with homely environment. We celebrate every teachers’ birthdays and of the residents. The latest celebration, which was of an intellectually disabled child, added up one more reason of happiness during the year. Everyone was grouped together as one to wish and sing the Happy Birthday song followed by some sweets (also some noodles and fruit flavored juice) to eat/ drink as birthday treats. His friends and seniors were happy during the moment of celebration.

Kavre deaf school in Banepa Kavre Deaf School is a special school for deaf children, established in 1995. The school started with 7 students, one room and only a literacy program. The children performed well in the literacy program and we saw the need to expand the education of the students. Now the school has primary class to class 10. 12 students have passed the SLC exam. When the school started, society did not accept deaf people. Deaf people were facing many problems and communication barriers. Most deaf children are living in village areas. They are unable to go to school near their home, because there are only hearing schools in the villages. They cannot get opportunities for education. We were facing the problem of how to provide education to them. Kavre Deaf School did not have a hostel building. At this time we met Kumari foundation, Holland. Kumari foundation supported the hostel building construction at the school and scholarships for some students. There was an opening ceremony for the hostel building in February 2011 with Monique and Rickey. The hostel has enabled 15 village students (6 girls and 9 boys) to stay at Kavre Deaf School. Some students had never seen the school and town. They are very happy to stay in the hostel, receive education and make friends. Now they are learning computer skills, games and English. The new kitchen allows hostel students to make meals at the school. The kitchen also enables cooking classes for all students. The hostel is independently managed by the students. The students develop the rules, work division and responsibilities. This provides the students with basic life skills for home management. Each year we have volunteers and a global exploration exchange program (Netherlands) which provides students with more exposure, increased confidence and opportunities for exchanging culture. This year 16 new students have started coming to our school. Now there are a total of 67 students in our school.

Lastly thank you very much for your support to Nepal’s deaf children, their career and their future. We hope you will keep in touch and continue to develop our school and have programs with us in the future. We wish Kumari Foundation a happy 10th year anniversary. Krishna Pyari Nakarmi Principal, Kavre Deaf School Private hostel/ school for the deaf in Naxal Power cut has now become a big problem in Nepal. There is no single day without a few hours of power cut. It increases up to 19 hours a day in winter season and people have to live in dark. As hearing people can communicate in dark, the Deaf people can’t. They need a good light source for communication because they depend on sign language for communication. Good and properly lightening help with seeing speech and signs because their eyes work as ear and their hands work as mouth. And THANKS KUMARI ORGANISATION who has helped to install SOLAR LIGHTING SYSTEM in hostel where 35 deaf students are living for their education. Every rooms, including kitchen, bathrooms and corridor are lightened after power cut. Before solar energy we had to depend on candle light which was danger and expensive as well. Because of small students we were always scared of catching fire. Power cut affects not only their communication but also education. Now with the help of KUMARI ORGANISATION deaf students have got a good source of light helping them to study during power cut for better education. Thanks once again for Kumari Organization for such a good gift for hostel. Also the contribution to the rent of the hostel is a great help for our hostel.

“Tekens uit Nepal”.

Mieke Kirkels uit Cadier en Keer bracht in september voor het eerst een bezoek aan Nepal. Geïnspireerd door de projecten van onze stichting bracht ze ook een bezoek aan de Kavre deaf school in Banepa. Hier gaf ze een tekenworkshop aan de studenten van de oudste groepen. Het idee ontstond om een boekje te maken met als titel

“Tekens uit Nepal.”

Het boekje over doven, doofheid en gebarentaal in Nepal is geïllustreerd door leerlingen van de Kavre Deaf School in Banepa. Zonder tekens, sign language is communicatie, laat staan onderwijs, voor dove kinderen haast onmogelijk. Zie hier haar verslag: “Mijn intentie was om samen met de leerlingen te werken aan een boek voor “horende’ in Nederland over hun tekens, hun taal. Tekenmaterialen waren niet voorhanden, maar met mijn Europese beurs kon ik voor een prikje papier, kleurpotloden en fine liners kopen. Het enthousiasme van de leerlingen was geweldig. Ze tekenden onafgebroken, geconcentreerd en met duidelijk veel plezier op basis van kleine opdrachten. Op het eind van de eerste dag gaf ik hen papier mee naar huis, zonder enige bijbedoeling. De volgende dag brachten ze me nieuwe tekeningen die ze thuis, meestal bij kaarslicht, voor me hadden gemaakt. Ze tekenden gebaren en hun betekenis, maar ook hun omgeving en de – meestal lange- weg die ze dagelijks afleggen om op school te komen. Platform wereldburgerschap Sinds ruim een jaar is Stichting Kumari ook lid van het Platform Wereldburgerschap te Valkenburg aan de Geul. De samenwerkende stichtingen voor particulier Initiatief, fairtrade en wereldburgerschap bundelen hun krachten en activiteiten om te komen tot invulling van wereldburgerschap en mondiaal beleid binnen de gemeente Valkenburg. Dit platform is onder anderen voortgekomen uit het Mondiale werkgroep in Valkenburg, een overleg waar we als stichting ook aan deelnamen. Global exploration

Ook komend jaar zullen er leerlingen, die onder leiding van Global exploration hun vleugels uitslaan naar ontwikkelingslanden over de gehele wereld, Nepal bezoeken. Zoals het er nu uit ziet zullen drie groepen gaan reizen binnen Nepal. Onze projecten zijn weer in het programma opgenomen. Hopelijk kunnen we met hulp van de reizende studenten weer een droom van één onze projecten realiseren. Stichting Wilde Ganzen is hierbij een grote steun!
