r rand d MK-196: ANTIHYPERTENSIVE Equivalent to hydrochlorothiazide A novel indanone diuretic/antihypertensive MK-196 (Merck.. Sharp and Dohme) in a dose of I O-ISmg daily was equivalent to SOmg of hydrochlorothiazide in 42 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. This 4-week, multiclinic, double-blind study showed both doses of M K-196 to be associated with fewer side effects (13-15 %) than hydrochlorothiazide (21 %) and to cause less frequent and smaller decreases in serum potassium. Increases of serum uric acid tended to be smaller with MK-196 and it appeared to offer some therapeutic advantages over hydrochlorothiazide. Wilhelmsson.
