May you have a blessed New Year ahead! 1994 ended on a very high ,||i 1note for us with the Risograph being delivered as promised. 1baptizedone of our black customers this month here at Central Christian. And --Phyllis and Ipaid aMonday/Friday visit to our friends in Port Shepstone. |We rejoice that we found them well and we returned to Alberton much ( j ;blessed by the few days away. The car purred along nicely for the eight r_ _and a half hour trip each direction. The speed limit is 120 kilometers;hour, and cars often passed us like we were standing still. Thai ;accounts for the record of deaths on the highway being broken againWe left a friend to "house sit" here because of the danger in leavingpremises unattended while you are away. 1picked up the paper whenwe got back and noted that there had been 1230 reported burglariesduring those 5 days alone in GautengI Who knows how many will only "^ 4be reported when people return to find the place stripped! Iappreciated ^the line, "housebreakings were the highest of all crimes this year - 'surpassing even car theft". Car theft is considered to beso out of controlthat insurance companies do notwant to write coverage at any price.

Dear Co-workers, February, 95We praise the Lord for your prayers for protection. I read aninteresting fact in the paper recentfy. It commented, in connectionwith an article on insurance, that during the Christmas Holidayseason one of every ten homes in the Randburg area of theNorthern suburbs of Johannesburg was burgled. No wonder it is 1Malmost impossible to get insurancel Heather, the lady who stayedat the Gospel Tract Centre while we were away, had her carstolen from the parking area of a shopping mall this past week.Thankfully, itdid not happen here at the Centre. The Risograph printer is now paid for in full, and during January, we were delighted to be able to re-print five of our booklets and Hsome of our tracts which were getting very low in supply. We Halso sold our folding machine and a printing plate burner. ! now

March, 1995We have two bookletsthat we enclose in the packetwithnearly all sales at theBible Book Shop. One is our 16 page catalogue / order form of our ownpublications, and the other is a booklet presenting the basic purpose andteaching of the New Testament church. As supplies of the latter were very low,we reprinted that one this month. 1also enclose a tract we prepared for street Iv \ /evangelism. That one is available free of charge in all 11 official languages of ||r ^South Africa. We have had no complaints though a few customers have asked Sjif we did not make a mistake and give them too many items. 1 :iOn one day this past week, we had three families who promised to be at the B ^ jprservices this past Sunday. Not surprisingly, none of them tiimcd up. One of JPkthem had severe personal problems. Imust confess, I did not expect them. One jjlfwas a disillusioned "pastor" from a Rhema type background. They were fed ^up with the "drama" and "God wants you to be rich" emphasis of thatmega-church, and after praying thatif the Lord wanted them to continue there, the name of Jesus should be mentioned three t imes in the sermon. The Lord'sname was not once mentioned,so they decided to pul! out That couple mayOne student turned up for the School of Evangelism classes, then he missed aweek and this past Saturday phoned thathe had to miss but thathe planned tobe here next Saturday. I would say that the one class we had was very good.Hopefully, he will keep his next appointment. What we need for the announced Sunday afternoon interpreted church services are a few of our own people to come fromKatiehong to visit and be seen entering and heard singing. I think a few weeks might get things started there, but I certainly cannot do tha t a lone .My printing log has many entries this month, among items printed were Xhosa tracts, baptismal certificates, church recordkeeping loose leaf pages for a binder, the booklet, *'Oiie People! the Challenge of the Restoration Movement", Afrikaanstracts, 7000 impressions of "Minister's Supplies" for the mission to distribute at the Minister's Retreat and the teachingsupplies for Daniel. Daniel is still attending evening services and keepibringing all sorts of things to be printed for hisgraduating class. These arc persons who have failed in the past. He says they have a95% pass rate after his teaching. Amazing!During this month, I bought some of the fixtures and the remaining stock from a closed Bible Colfee Bar and Bible BookshopinHeidelberg. Heidelberg is about twenty miles south ofAlberton. Kiyllis and I made two trips down there, the second timehiring a trailer and bringing the fixtures we could use. It was a struggle as those were made of formica covered chip board, which is very heavy, but they make agreat difference now that they arc in place. Everything can now be displayed so that it canreally be seen properly. The new stock has not been here long enough to make a difference, but praises to the Lord, February is setting a new record inBible and book turnover. We praise Him too for your faithftil prayers.Yours in Jesus Christ,

Last month's news letter gave a glimpse of the Inside of the Bible bookshop, thecomputerdesk where we do all ofour print set up, and the cornerwhere tiie printing isdone. This month I printed two booklets and both of themwere also assembled at thattable as my usual work bench was piled high with other work. Nearly all the space onthe main outside shop walls is filled with our own publications. We resen/e the innerunits for English and Afrikaans materials from other publishers. We were blessed lastmonth to be able to purchase two colour units for the new press and we used one onNear the end of April, we sold the Bible Van which we felt was costing too much to ^

justify keeping it since we bought the buildings. On the rare occasion we wanted to use Mjir 'It, it always had a dead batteryl Now that we can cancel the insurance cover on thatand have the cash from the sale, wewill be able to purchase two more colour units for . . , , -ri_ uthe press. This will make it possible touse red, blue, green and yellow inks as well as the basic black. That ts aboutall we e ve r u se d before. Two of our computers broke down at the same time during April. Both of them had "mother board failures. Onewas the one thatwe used for addressing our news letters. The repair shop removed the battery and repaired thedamage that it had made when the battery blew, but now we have problems "booting it up" and it flatly refuses toaccept the "daisy wheel printer" again. I think, we just may have to make other arrangements for printing theaddresses, but both those machines were very old for that type of equipment. I battled to get tiie envelopes donethis month on an old printer, but it also gave problems. The other computer was the newest one and ttwas stillbarely under guarantee. They put in a new motherboard free of charge, but it really only prints on the lazer pnnter. That is too expensive for single addresses; perhaps sheets of labels? This is a time wheri I really wished ourgrandson. Shannon, was back from Bible College as he is very computer literate. The Lord willing, he will soon bennishing there and be ready to return to train to take over the work from us and to lighten our own responsibilitiessomewhat. Iexpect that he will soon be starting to raise funds to that end. Do keep him in your prayers as he reallyhas very few contacts in America, having been born in Ohio, but having lived in South Africa since he was a tinybaby. This is May Day and a public holiday under the new South Africa. In fact this has been a long week end as lastThursday was the first year anniversary of the new government and also a holiday. These two days when the shopwas closed to business. I have been able to do a lot of maintance work that had accumulated, one being theprinting of the second booklet Imentioned earlier, another being to repair a leaking toilet tank. Another awaits!Cold weather is upon us! so last week, Iwent out and purchased two oil filled radiator heaters. One of them isupstairs in our private bedroom/sitting room, and the other is in the church lounge down stairs. We plan to startholding evening services there, "home church" style during the coldest winter rnonths. Usually the chapel is warmenough for the morning services, but the evenings can be bitterly cold, and it is absolutely too large to heat withelectric heaters. Today is very overcast and there is snow in the mountains of Lesotho, so we have a smallfan-heater at our fee t under the desk l

April was the month of the annual "Rand Show", a combination agricultural and business show, much like aState fair. We did not attend ourselves, but some of our customers did, and several came in to ask for tracts todistribute there. ! think, we shall prepare a special tract for that purpose next year. Idid three simple ones this y3fjbut only after the show had started and most people had already been here to enquire. If we had the staff, we couldprobably have our own stand and distribute many thousands. Unfortunately April is too early to be able to useSummer Student interns for that purpose. They would love the two weeks if it weren't. Perhaps a team of Christiantourists would like to visit South Africa for about a month, first to distribute tracts at the show; then to go on for an"AfricaSafari" afterwards. We haveadequate accomodation for a few persons and could arrange for a few more.3urs in Jesus Chr^. August, 95Wc thank tlic Lord that Heused us to print over fifty thousand impressions this month.Forty three thousand of these were forthe printingof a thousand copies of a Lomwc hymnal to be u.scd in Mozambique. While Portuguese is the official language ofMazambique, Lomwc is spoken by manyof the Africans, especiallyin the northernhalf. This was a joint effort withDale andHueyMason here and Jacob and NylaMichael who are presently in America. The Masons set the type on their computer andbrought the masters to me to be printed. Togctlicr wc assembled a hundred or so that had been started; then Dale was able tolocate someone who has an office folding machine, so he took most of Ihe 20,000 sheets remaining to be folded on it. Wc

jointly breathed a sigh of relief, but tliey will still have to be assembled and bound, so wc may see them returned as I have aheavy duty stapler.I just thank the Lord for Dale's willingness to spend a great deal of time organizing our computer so that wc can use theWord Pcrfcct program to store and print our mailing list, and so that it can handle the scanner we bought a month ago in orderto scan and convert over thirty of our early booklets ixom typed to printed layout, improving the layout and using larger, morereadable type at the same time. I had started to do thisfrom "scratch", and had completely retyped three of them, but this willgreatly speed up the task. Adjustments in Ihe dos and upgrading of the Word Perfect program, which were essential to theoperation of the scanner, actually brought it to a complete halt, but we assume it is simply that adjustments have to be made tothe installation to matchthe upgrade. The technician is due today to do that. If your lettersarc still not addressed properly it willbe because I have never used that facility of the WP software, and I still need to import the addresses and learn how to usethem. They do print properly though. Unfortunatelyneither Dale nor Huey have used tliat part of the programme eitlier!Wc just hope the problem is not that our computer was built in a local computershop from individual components. I read in arcccnt newspaper tliat some of these machines simply can never handle the demands of modern software and they should bereplaced with brand name machines. I do know that the shop announced it in pcrfcct condition and diat it simply refused toboot-up in myoffice a half an hour later. It simply "locks" up or "freezes" regularly; sometimes severaltimes a day. I may be

forced to do something about it one of these days.Phyllis and her helpers had a very successful Vacation Bible School here at Central Cliristian, and the week following, she

took the car daily to teach at Kimbcrlcy Road. Our thanks to Sharon and Heidi Mcssimcr who helped here, and to AliccFishback who also helped with the tcacliing at both churches.Plans have gone into high gear for the "All Africa Missionary Conference" to be held at Aletheia Christian Centre here in

Johannesburg. Stu Cook informs me tliat 1 was mistaken about the Formula 1 hotels and that rooms can be reserved for theperiod. The branch a few doors up tlie street from them will be convenient, and will help with the parking as the car can be leftthere with a security guard to watch. Most of our local missionaries will also have guests for tlic days of the conference; drivingback and fort each day. A family of five from Nairobi is booked to stay with us. Wc could manage two more and probably will.

GOSPEL TRACT CENTRE PLAZAThe work of the Gospel Tract Centre has grown over a span of several years, andespecially since the purchase of the present buildings in central Alberton ofGauteng Province, Republic of South Africa. We have greathopes for the useof these buildings to further thework of theLordinSouthAfrica. It was about Marchof 1991 that they first becameavailable for sale. The priceat that time was very high, but I made it a matter of prayer, and prayed soearnestly that one day the Lord broke into my prayer with the words, "Be still,an d know that I am God." I was so stunned that I immediately changcd myprayer to praise and after that ceased to pray about this particular matter. Wehad no money to offer, and the advertisements ceased, so we assumed that thebuilding had been sold.In October of 1992, the advert appeared again and the asking price was thenthe equivalent of $106,000. I still had no money, but I again rafiier timidlyturned to the Lordin prayer.Withindays, a portionof an estate cameavailable, and was offered anonymously.I made an offer in November, and signed the papers in January. On March 3rdpayment was made in ftill. Since then approximately $34000 has been addedfrom the same source for alterations and improvements. Praises to the Lordwho provided! The GospelTract Centre publishers catalog is now a 16page booklet offeringmaterials in any of 19 languages, all from our own press. Hiese materials arestored in basement warehousinguntil needed in the shop or to catalog shoppers.Hie spaciousBible and book shopnow offers thoseplus a wide varietyof othermaterials from American and African publishers. Job printing is notencouraged, but the "Copy Comer" of the shop does cater to Photocopyservice, or Risograph copies and binding service of pre-set copy. Copy forbusiness cards or letterheads is set on the computer if required.A Bible Correspondence Lesson desk and computer now has its own areaavailableand wecan copewith the demands of thisworkfar easier thanbefore.Onr aduit classroom is equipped to teach via video tapes, overheadprojector,or white board as needed. Desk chairs arc available for fifteen, but probablytwenty studentscould be accommodated there. The present small class simplyprefers the intimacy of using the work tableof the CopyComer area. The large chapel, office and cry room are presently housing the fledglingCentral Christian Church, and I am seeking for a fuU time evangelist to takeover and build that part of the work.

Dear Co-workers, September 5, 1995Praise theLord that after two months of tryingto get the serviceman who installed it to getourScanner/optical reader/fax working and eventually asking that they either come and collect it orcome get it operating, he showed up and set it right. At least partially so! In the meantime, I did giveup and bought an ordinary fax machine which is left on24 hours a day, onnumber 011-27-11-907-8651, barring aviolent electrical storm that is. (We have some of the most violent electrical stormsI haveever seen during the Spring and Summer!)1have kept the computer busy of late. It has been upgraded toDos 6.22, and Word Perfect6.1, so I am battling now to learn a whole whole new set of terms and methods for doing things.Thankfully, the scanner did not demand Microsoft 95, which arrived with great fanfare earlier thismonth! One weird thing we are struggling with is thatwhen the phone rings, our computer ballcrashes andwe losewhatwe have beenworking onat the time, and possibly evenhave to take thecomputer to the shop tohave it re-set. it is especially upsetting togeta series ofwrong numbers andhave to turn offand start again, and again. Fortunaly Wpwin6.1 keeps what one was working on inmemory and asks ifyou want to save it before you do anythiung else. Ifit did not, itwould bemore

    than an annoyance.

We have printed two smaller booklets and one of 142 pages, which involved printing nearlythirty-thousand pages. (Iprinted solidly for four days.) That one was an Afrikaans book done for DaleMason. Their mission ftind paid for all the materials, and Dale and Huey were terrific in that theyworked right with me and did all the collating, punching and spiral binding. Dale desperately wantedthem finished before the AllAfrica Missionary Conference which is now in its second day. He isteaching in a seminar at Kimberley next week and wants to use it there. We have printed nearly fortythousand pages during August and already September is starting out with aPortuguese book broughtby one of the missionaries from Mozambique. We printed 100 copies of this 120 page bookyesterday. He wants to finish it and take it back with him after the conference so he ishere todayassembling the pages I printed yesterday. As soon as the scanner was operative, I started scanning thebooklets that we have had onlyin typewritten form since the late seventies or early eighties. I have six of them scanned into thecomputer; five English and one Xhosa. They will all need considerable work yet asthe spacing wassomewhat messed up in the process. As I am still learning how to cope with editing inthe new WordPerfect itisgoing tobea slow process. The scanning and optical reading, even correcting spellingmistakes where it could not read a few letters are no problem, but the fragmentation is something

again! We have five guests inourhome from Kenya fortheweek. They leave before breakfast andgo to the conference, only returning after the evening session. I am sure they are getting more in that

we are, even though we live here. The messages have been excellent. One of the guest speakers isSam Stone, and another Ziden Nutt, bothofwhom are regular speakers attheNorth American soyou have probably heard them. The other man isfrom Non-instrument background, from Nashville.June Anderson, F/AYours in Jesus Christ, p O. Box 3051

Dear Co-workers. Deeember 95Praises to the Lord for the computer scanner! Once we had scanned all ofour oldest English books of the most teaching value that really needreplaced with new editions, we ventured into the African languages of thesame. Most of the Zulu and Xhosa booklets and one in Tswana (completewith all i ts accent marks) are now on the computer disk and hard copyprintouts are on file when the time comes to do the actual re-prints!There are s t i l l about a dozen that we either consider to be less importantor are larger jobs that we left t i l l last. Since I have slowed down a bit.my eyes have stopped giving me so much trouble. I am thankful for that.Toward the end of November. I printed 10,000 copies of the enclosed flyerwhich we had distributed for us by a company which included them alongwith their own Homemaker's magazines door to door. Another 6500 wouldblanket Alberton and i t ' s suburbs. I may have those done after theholidays. School is now out. and too many people would be away on holidayduring Oecenter. These have made a great difference on the turnover of theBible Shop, though there has been l i t t le effect on the church attendanceso far. At l eas t those who botherd to read them know where to find us. andour phone number. One man has enquired concerning training for theministry. We have been concerned about one of our young men at Central Christian,as Joseph is more deaf than I realized and he has evidently found i t hardto hear me. He often takes their baby to the cry room where he could nothave heard anything at all . so we have now had a sound system installedin the auditorium and the cry room. In the cry room, he can turn i t asloud as he wishes. I have control over the two speaker boxes in the mainauditcfrium from the pulpit. The keyboard is also channeled through thissystem. The gutters, facias, and zinc roof of the the church building have beena concern top. so we have asked a quotation for their repair and painting. One of Phyl-iis' Bibl6 CTass student s husband has this sort of businessand will be making a^qubte early in the new year. t'Our granddaughter Susan,Cloete returned for Israel and was here for amonth before returning;.a couple of weeks ago. to Tel Aviv where she istraining to be a cook in a fancy restaurant. Her brother. Thomas returnedunexpectedly to South Africa and took us all by surprise. He and hiscousin Clinton have done considerable travelling while they were there. They spent much of their time at Eilat. but visited Egypt where Thomasclintoed one of the pyramids, visited the Sphynx. and travelled up the Nilein a small sailing craft . They also swam in the Nile from the boat, andsaw so many temples at Luxor they were t ired of them. They climbed MtSinai and visited the ruins of Petra. In Israel, they seem to have goneeverywhere worth mentioning. In any case, he is back to stay now, and
