TOPSPORT AND SCIENCECOOLING GEAR
Sport Vlaanderen – Topsport: goal toobtain as much top-8 places on EC, WC and OG in Olympic sports.
Guide elite athletes, coaches and staffin their road to Tokio and beyond.
Elite athletes are often abroad, in places where it can be hot and humid. For example: the Olympic Games in Tokio: average 32 degrees and 70% humidity, WC football in Doha, …
Why application from Sport Vlaanderen?
Why is this a problem?
In extreme heat, our body suffers to cool down to a normal state. Ifthe humidity is also high, it gets even harder. The body can become
in a hyperthermic state, which can imply dangerous AND affectsperformance negative.
Hyperthermia?
Hyperthermia is elevated body temperature due to failed thermoregulation that occurs when a body produces or absorbs more heat than it dissipates. Extreme temperature elevation then becomes a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to prevent disability or death.
Possible cause: Exercise in a hot and humid environment. Transpirationcan not cool down the body.
Treatment: Hypertermia can be life threatening if no action has been taken. What can be done:
• Ending the provoking factor: for exampleending the exercise
• Physical cooling down using water and/or ice• Specific therapy such as medication.
A person with a normal body temperature can perform on a higherlevel compared to a person in hyperthermia.
Hyperthermia can be life threathening (for example. Reanimationsduring sport events)
Solution could be interesting for medical use (persons with disturbedthermoregulation).
If solution can be processed in textile, application in many areas is possible.
WHAT: need?
Way to cool down the elite athletes before/during andafter training or competition during their stay in thehead/humid places.
Current cooling gear (vb. Hyperkewl): needs to be frozenusing a freezer and based on ice. Therefore they are notuserfriendly and not usefull in all environments.
Pointed for EC/WC and OG (Tokio: during summer 22 days above 30 degrees with a humidity of >70%)
