Civil War Sites

DISCOVER LOCAL HISTORY

Harrietrsquos Chapel was a former church that served

as a Civil War field hospital following the 1862 FirstBattle of Kinston The church was destroyed but

today the New Beaverdam Primitive Church similarin design to the chapel is on the same site on US

258 South and open to visitors A historical markeron the grounds describes a Starrrsquos Battery bloody

encounter there during the First Battle of KinstonAlso in Kinston is the Gov Caswell Memorial that

commemorates the life of Richard Caswell who wasthe first governor of the independent state of North

Carolina In addition there is a First Battle of Kinston

Civil War Battlefield Park as well as a CSS Neuse

Civil War Interpretive Center which pays tributeto the gunboat CSS Neuse that the Confederate

navy sailed in battle

Lenoir Community College

The fine arts are well represented at Lenoir

Lenoir Community College has a Workforce Training Center that

provides free customized training programs to companies that create 12or more jobs in a year and participating employers may be reimbursed

up to 50 percent of an individual employeersquos starting wage rate duringthe training period LCC can also perform skills assessments of job

candidates prior to their hiring through aptitude testing at the collegersquosJobLink Career Centers at various locations throughout the region

region is served by Kinston Regional Jetport whose single

ldquoWersquove had good fortune over the last seven oreight yearsrdquo says Mark Pope executive director of theLenoir Economic Development Department ldquoWersquovehad about 29 new or expanded industries announcedtotaled more than 4100 jobs and had more than abillion dollars in capital investments

ldquoWersquove turned a corner and been very blessed bythe good Lord and wersquore moving in the right directionrdquo

Historically a region for agriculture and textilesLenoir County has seen a variety of new companies

moving here and existing ones expanding Thearea now has around 5300 employees in themanufacturing sector Pope says after having lostsome 8000 jobs in the late 1980s and early rsquo90s

ldquoWe learned a lot from thatrdquo he says ldquoNow insteadof just being agriculture and textiles wersquove got severaldifferent industries What we did learn was to becomemore diversifiedrdquo

One of the countyrsquos strengths is its educationsystem The 2+2 Engineering program at LenoirCommunity College is an example It is a partnershipbetween the school and state-supported universitiessuch as North Carolina State and East Carolina

West Pharmaceutical Services ndash The Pennsylvaniacompany is commemorating 40 years in Kinston in1914 The facility located on 24 acres of land with morethan 181000 square feet is currently in the process ofa $29 million expansion that will bring in additional jobs The Kinston site produces high-volume devicesand pharmaceutical components

MasterBrand Cabinets ndash This company is perhapsbest known for the line of Martha Stewart Living

cabinets it is producing Founded in 1999 the additionof the premium cabinets to its production added

around 350 employees It now has 475 workersSpirit AeroSystems ndash The regionrsquos highly skilled

workforce was part of what led Spirit AeroSystems tolocate at the North Carolina Global TransPark nearKinston in 2010 The company the worldrsquos largestindependent supplier of commercial airplaneassemblies and components continues to expandand plans to hire another 800 employees within thecoming years

DuPont ndash This company may not have the impactit did when it first came to Kinston in the early 1950sand had as many as 3600 employees but it maintainsa strong presence here The Kinston plant producesSorona polymer which is used in carpet clothing andother products
