DARE 2B DIFFERENT
In onze

Mission Statement
Fortunately, expectations are growing. Entrepreneurs, governments,
school boards, service and care providers, who are not satisfied with ‘ just
good enough.’ They realise that their staff and customers do not get any
benefits from an organisation in which all individuality has vanished.
They recognise the distinguishing ambitions of Lensvelt, because they
also want to stand out themselves. They have a good perception and
know that we have a fine perception too. They are sensitive to innovation,
demanding where quality is concerned and recognise the same motives
in how we operate. They dare to take risks and expect nothing less
from us. The quality of our work has to express the realisation of the
workplace in which people are challenged to think in a more clear-cut
way, be more self-confident in making choices and are stuck in a secure
environment and replace these with better ideas. Lensvelt does not
approach the design of workplaces like the regular confection made
designs, but like taking measurements for a custom made suit, tailored
to the situation. Our core values, Culture, Design, Innovation and Quality,
have already been shaping the direction of the development of our
company for considerable time. They are recognised by our partners and
customers and supported by the attention that our work generates in the
international, professional media. Such reactions are still confirming the
validity of our mission: ‘Lensvelt, Leading in Office Design.’
We shape workplaces with top designers. We combine culture, design and
a sophisticated understanding for functionality in our designs, design
proposals and services. Because we have the guts to think outside the
box, we can bring about solutions for design problems that really inspire.
We explore the possibilities of innovative concepts with our customers.
This manner does not only seem to appeal to our customers, but
furthermore, it is also especially easy for our architects to identify with.
With our partners we convince the market of our ideas. ■
Lensvelt chooses distinction, or to be more precise, distinguishing. We look for solutions with our customers that open borders for both of us. Because renewal does not exist if we simply keep repeating what has already proved itself. Renewal goes hand in had with daring and that is what is typical of Lensvelt: The audacity to deviate and the will to renew. The pertinent conviction that cultures are changeable, even those within a company, and therefore, they continually make new statements. Lensvelt draws inspiration from change, which stipulates the dynamics of our existence and the meaning of our efforts.
Moreover, we choose to bring in architects and designers who work at the
top in their field. Designers with a strong vision and an infallible feeling for
the changeability of a specific period of time. They are our eyes and ears in
the world and their suggestions help us to think about the products of the
future. We supply the market knowledge and the development process.
We also take care of the actual production, preferably immediately, so as
not to let the future wait unnecessarily. Just as we force ourselves not to
be satisfied with the given path that is how we choose designs with which
new paths are paved. We accomplish this with the conviction that the search
eventually helps the originality and the sustainability of the product that we
are making. And, therefore, the distinguishing character of the projects in
which our furniture has a place.
As a manufacturer of office furniture we move within a business that does
not excel in originality and the impulse for renewal. Office design is often
as uniform as the working hours, the healthy roll for lunch, the hire car in
the garage and unfortunately, the anonymous architectonic surroundings
of many office environments.

Chair002 AVL – King Kong
AVL – King Kong, beter bekend
als ‘Almost Perfect’, werd in 2006
door AVL ontworpen. Het enigs-
zins vreemd ogende stoeltje heeft
een surrealistische uitstraling:
de verhoudingen lijken niet te
kloppen en ronde, gladde vormen
worden gecombineerd met harde,
scherpe randen. AVL ontwierp
AVL – King Kong op een papieren
servetje en stuurde deze schets
naar een Chinees productiebedrijf.
Niet de uitgekiende vormwil van
de ontwerper, maar uiteenlopende
externe productiefactoren hebben
het uiterlijk van de stoel bepaald.
Alle exemplaren van AVL – King
Kong ogen anders, en tonen hun
imperfecties.
vervaardigd.
King Kong, better known as
‘Almost Perfect’, was designed by
AVL in 2006. The rather strange
looking chair has a surreal
charisma: the proportions do not
seem to agree with each other
and smooth, round forms are
combined with hard, sharp edges.
AVL designed King Kong on a paper
serviette and sent this sketch to a
Chinese manufacturer. The chair
got its look from a combination
of the sophisticated design,
created by the designer, and a
number of external production
factors. All examples of King
Kong look different, and stress
their imperfections. Because of
this they look like they have been
handmade, piece by piece.

Eline Strijkers (Weesp, 1969) studied design and communication at the Ichthus College in Rotterdam and then interior design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in the same city. After having worked for MVRDV for five years, she was one of the people who worked on the design
for the VPRO building and in 1999 she started her own design studio. She nourished a real fascination for the analysis and optimisation of movement and challenging the customer. Due to this her projects are not only strong in the architect-ural sense, but are also functional and custom made for the customer. She has designed numerous shop interiors, restaurants and office interiors. Due to her conviction that a multidisciplinary and integral design process lies behind the synergy between architecture and interior, she has been working with the architects Duzan Doepel and Marc Joubert under the name of DOEPELJOUBERTSTRIJKERS since 2007.

een nieuwe dimensie. De mini-

The Strijkers Partition System
(SPS) brings a new dimension to
the design of room dividers, as it
has a minimalistic, rectangular
form that gives the room a
natural and informal look. The
room appears open due to the
large, glass wall panels, whereas
it does not lose its intimacy, as
background noise is effectively
reduced. Glass panels and doors
are supported by a versatile frame

In oude glorie
maritieme functies zoals zeilmakerijen.

The office of property developer OVG Fixed sturdily on the quay, indestructibly constructed and splendid in its pursuit to be particularly useful. The Las Palmas Building on the Wilhelmina Pier in Rotterdam did not even need to be placed on the listed building list to still to qualify for conservation and eventually restoration.
It officially began its second life in 2007. Restored to its former glory and
provided with new functions and a new ‘crown,’ Las Palmas symbolises the
changes in the area at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge. Always a part of the
Rotterdam transport infrastructure. Now Las Palmas and several other
buildings in the area have been transformed to supporting pillars of the
cultural infrastructure of the city on the Maas.
The building was designed by the architects Van den Broek and Bakema in
1953. Under its roof it offered a variety of workshops with maritime themes
such as sail making. Many of their activities were directly affiliated with
the Holland-America Line (HALL), which brandished the sceptre in this part
of the Rotterdam harbour. The activities of the HALL came to a standstill
during the seventies and Van den Broek’s and Bakema’s creation gradually
became empty. The quality of the building was unmistakable, but a suitable
use was mulled over for a long time. Temporary uses followed one after the
other and just then definite plans were laid on the table to redevelop the
Head of the South and amongst other things the success of the Hotel New
York nearby proved that a new urban core was in development here. This
also speeded up the thinking on the former workshop building.
Property developer OVG did not only undertake the modernisation, but
also decided to use Las Palmas as its headquarters. Benthem Crouwel
Architects obtained the contract to make the complex suitable for the 21st
century. Since the renovation Las Palmas has offered places to the Dutch
Photography Museum, architect bureau Inbo and market research bureau
Metrixlabs, amongst others. The architects designed a new extension on
the roof, which is used by OVG. The company could get nobody less than
ex USA president Bill Clinton to open the office formally. These two floors
counted as the penthouse are suspended like the goods above the solid,
white block. The rounded / oval form of the new extension is an interesting
contrast to the original building and Las Palmas became more important
and recognisable because of it.
Van den Broek and Bakema gave serious consideration to an eventual
extension of the original design. The construction was strong enough to
carry a new floor. This made it possible to also build a car park on the roof
next to the penthouse now.
The OVG office has a spectacular view of the surrounding area because of
the enormous glass areas on the end sides: the Maas, the Erasmus Bridge
and the Rotterdam skyline are all there for the taking.
The same transparency characterises the interior. Glass partitions are
used to shield certain parts of the interior, but the total picture is one of
an undivided, open room. The feeling of continuity is strengthened by the
bevelled form of the façade and because of this the floor runs organically
into the ceiling. Transparency is more than just a feature of the interior for
OVG; it symbolises the character of the company that since 1997 has grown
into one of the most progressive and prominent property developers in the
Netherlands.
As owner and developer of Las Palmas OVG shows what the company
stands for. Briefly summarised OVG strives for ‘the development of long-
lasting projects that result in integrated solutions and meet the demands
of current and future generations, without paying doing penance for quality
or price thereby. More and more projects are taking place in the inner city
and scale and significance are increasing. The office interior has to reflect
the mission; you and new, but also professional and well considered.
General Director, Coen van Oostrom, concluded that all these aspects
are present in the design. He is proud of the aesthetic perfection of his
daily work surroundings. Visitors are enthralled at first sight. Architects
and interior designers have the perception to convince immediately. But,
whoever really looks, will still be surprised a second time. A closer look will
reveal how all the parts of the project fit beautifully together.

of the thinnest possible material
and an extremely ‘thin’ chrome
metal wire base. This office chair
is really lightweight because of
the minimalistic use of material.
The bevelled seat is made out of
plastic. Richard Hutten and an
ergonomist did extensive research
into the most optimum form for the
seat contour.
Keer op keer is het model aan-
gepast en getest. Hoewel de kuip
niet gestoffeerd is kan men gerust
urenlang op That Chair verpo-
zen. Standaard wordt That Chair
geleverd met een koppeling aan
het pootstel. Op verzoek kan That
Chair ook zonder deze koppelingen
worden geleverd. Een verrijdbare
stoelentrolley voor That Chair is
beschikbaar.
The model was changed and tested
over and over again. Although the
seat is not padded, you can still
rest on That Chair for hours at a
time. As a standard, That Chair
comes with connectors on the
base of the frame. That Chair can
also be delivered without these
connectors upon request. A mobile
trolley is also available for That
Chair.
