As I join the Loyola family as Principal of Loyola School, Iexpress my gratitude to Fr. Devassy Paul, S.J. for his manycontributions to the school for the last eight years. I wishhim a fruitful sabbatical. The whole world is in the midst of a tech revolutionunleashed by the progress made in Artificial Intelligence inthe recent years. My dream for Loyola School is that wewill prepare our wards for this Artificial Intelligencerevolution by introducing suitable courses in ourcurriculum.During these days of the pandemic, when there is so muchof suffering and disruption of normal life, we need to askourselves, what we can do as a family to mitigate thesuffering around us. I hope we can contribute towards themitigation of the suffering around us.There is so much uncertainty around us because of thelockdown and its aftermath. I pray that the academic yearwill be a fruitful one in spite of the disruptions. May Godcontinue to bless all of us. I wish you all good health andhappiness.

Towards the end of May, I wasinformed by Fr. Devassy Paul thathe had been transferred and wouldbe moving out of Loyola School onanother assignment. I was takenaback at first, as the news was likea bolt from the blue, but then, Irealised that the Jesuits were likepilgrims, always moving on. I hadthe privilege of working withFather for three years. A veryunderstanding, humane andcompassionate person, Father wasvery approachable to students, members of the teaching and nonteaching staff and the parents. Hedisplayed an open and democraticapproach to things and always

consulted the people concerned onissues that related to them. Being apatient listener, he gave advice toanyone who required it irrespective ofwhether it was related to their personalor professional lives. He rarely lost histemper and even if he did, he regainedhis composure within a few minutes.Fr. Devassy Paul SJ showed great careand concern towards children and dideverything in his power to make theirtime in Loyola school a comfortable andmemorable one. He will always beremembered for the improvements hemade to the school campus and forproviding stateoftheart facilities forall. A brand new school block with awellstocked library, a spaciousComputer lab, Art room, Music room,Meditation room, Counselling room, examination halls with comfortablefurniture, Smart Boards in all classrooms, a reference library for the soleuse of members of staff to name a few.As the Principal of the CBSE section, Ienjoyed his unconditional support andhis guidance in all matters related to thefunctioning of the school. On behalf of all the members of theLoyola family, I wish Fr. Devassy Paulall the best in his new assignment. Wewill surely miss him very much. Takecare Father! May God be with you!

SSTT IIGGNNAATTIIUUSSand theMMAAGGIISS Magis is a quite familiar and popular word in the

Jesuit circles. This word is repeatedly used inJesuit High Schools, Colleges and Universities. Ioften hear the students at Loyola School end theirpublic speeches with this magical word. Why domany of the Jesuit institutions use this inspirationalword as their motto?Magis is a Latin word that means ‘more’ or ‘greater’.It is related to the Ignatian ideal Ad Majorem DeiGloriam, a Latin phrase meaning ‘for the greaterglory of God’, the motto of the Society of Jesus. Therefore Magis refers to the philosophy of doingmore for God and therefore doing more for others. In The Spiritual Exercises (a onemonth retreatdrawn up by St Ignatius for personal renewal andcommitment to God) St Ignatius reminds us that, when making decisions about which work or ministryto choose, Jesuits should opt for that which is“conducive to the greater service of God and theuniversal good.” For St Ignatius, God is the centreof one’s life and everything is to be done for God’s

greater glory alone. The unofficial motto of the Society of Jesus isAd Majorem De Gloriam. The fundamental idea is that we try to do themore, the better, the greater, for God, not for ourselves. The word magis is an expression of both aspiration and inspiration. Magisinspires one to do things in the best way possible without any compromiseon quality. There is no space for mediocrity to one who seeks magis in hislife. Laziness and lethargy are detrimental to the seeker of the ideal magis. There are people who tend to misunderstand this Ignatian ideal and thefundamental Jesuit value as striving for the best and doing excellently forone’s own betterment. Attaining the highest position in a profession ormaking the most money is not the fundamental Jesuit value of magis. Selfinterest, selfseeking and selfgratification are not the Ignatian way. But itis doing the more, the better, the greater in an excellent way, for God andfor others.

Hi, like my peers, I have completed a mammothof an achievement notoriously called the Boards(albeit, this is the milder version that not a lot ofpeople pay attention to). The purpose of thisarticle is to share how I was able to overcome thistask successfully. Before I begin, a little disclaimer: I don’t want toseem pretentious; therefore, I’ll share the genericadvice and steps. Once a goal is set, we need todetermine the way we need to achieve this. Afterhearing a lot of stories of how “the Boards don’tmatter”, and how studying during the last twoweeks would suffice, I was prepared to take itlightly. Little did I know that it was going to beslightly (euphemism for “a lot”) harder than that.Firstly, no electronic devices this is a genuinesolution. Since we abuse these devices all daylong, there’s no point in trying to believe thatwe’ll use them “constructively.” I found this themost effective as I tend to spend a lot of time atthe computer; instead, then, due to a lack ofthings to do, I found myself genuinely studyingfor at least eight hours a day.Sticking to a timetable was also a very usefulmethod, which is obvious, but we tend to take itfor granted. So yes, I learnt it the hard way: thesolution really is exactly what our parents andteachers say: no electronic devices, stick to atimetable, work hard, and you’ll see the results. After months of evading this advice, I realized Iwas being foolish, and that this is the only way.

In the midst of ongoing COVID19 pandemic, the LoyolaInstitutions generously responded to the worstaffectedcommunities around Trivandrum. In our brief study aboutthe situation in Trivandrum district, we realized that thefishermen community is the worst affected group and wedecided to contribute our share to the relief work amongthem. The Loyola Institutions contributed 12 lakhstowards relief work.We reached out to 500 families in Anjengo, Poovar andCheruvikkal with food supplies and money. Each food kitconsisted of grocery, vegetables and bakery items costingaround Rs 1000. Additionally, financial support of Rs 500was made available to 210 families at Anjengo for theirmedical and other needs. Besides these, we reached out totwo homes for the destitute, contributing Rs 30000 and Rs20000 each for their daily feeding. Also, we contributed200 metres of cloth worth Rs 10,000 to Loyola SocialWorks, Poovar, for their project of stitching masks.Besides, the Loyola Institutions are helping out twofamilies with medical assistance and repair of a small shopwhich will cost around Rs 2 lakhs.
