ALEXANDERby Momus 12.06.2012I rst met Alexandre Singh while working as The Unreliable Tour Guide at
the 2006 Whitney Biennial. Friends suggested I stay in the converted facto -
ry in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he lives and works. A vast single-
story unit on an industrial estate, the place was full of Italian artists,
gutted ice cream vans, and autonomous half-timbered living spaceslike an
Elizabethanvillage rebuilt inside Cinecitt.
At its calm centre, in front of a crackling log re, sat Alex himself, a
quiet, self-possessed young Englishman of Indian extraction.
His art, I later discovered, involved slideshows, lectures, and talks, all
delivered in a quiet, aristocratic burr. The mixture of restraint, precisi-
on, exuberance and playfulness reminded me of Peter Greenaways Drowning by
Numbers, or the quietly delirious lmed tours of Patrick Keiller, in which
curious historical details are read over images of trafc systems and ware -
houses.
When I returned to New York a couple of years later, Singh was giving lec -
tures about Ikea (one describes a dream that the stores oorplan lays out
an index of all human knowledge) and had written a thousand-page book about
(and not about) Adi Dassler, the founder of Adidas, entitled The Marque of
the Third Stripe. At his White Columns performance during this years Per -
forma Biennial, Singh memorized and performed four pieces. In the rst, The
Alkahest, he related to the audience for three-and-a-half hours a series of
interwoven tales featuring golems, parrots, and abstract painters, garlan -
ded by picaresque jaunts through the countryside of Spain, faustian alche-
mists seeking forbidden knowledge, and some bawdy stage humour featuring a
character named Molire. The audience sat in a circle around an overhead-
projector that acted like a reside; as Singh told the tales, he would
place monochromatic transparencies onto the glass, bathing the room in a
series of colours appropriate to that particular passage in the story.
On the three following nights, Singh presented three of his Assembly In -
structions lectures. These hour-long performances involve discourses on
such topics as memory palaces, dreams, and romantic TV shows, all illustra -
ted by black and white collages thrown onto the wall with a pair of over -
head projectors.
MOMUS: Was it a bit like being an academic, gi -
ving those lectures, or more of a Pied Piper
thing?
ALEXANDRE SINGH: Each one of the lectures starts
off quite academically with the relation of va -
rious facts and dates and somewhere along the
line somehow dissolves into a web of slippery
connections and associations seemingly far remo-
ved from the original premise, but always comingback again and again to explore in a surprisingly
fantastical manner the very dry facts and gures
that Id casually dropped in at the beginning.
MOMUS: I particularly appreciate the understated,
quiet and calmyet fantastical and suggestive-
tone you achieve. I think a combination of mesme -
rism (the colored lights, spellbinding storytel-
ling, and so on) and unreliability is a potent
one. Do you have an interest, I wonder, in hypno -
tism? And what is your feeling about the right
degree of power a performed
narrative ought to have
over its listeners?
SINGH: Not in hypnotism,
per se. Im interested in
how one leads an audience
down the paths you wish for
it to follow. Ive studied
the anecdotal strategies
of the great raconteurs
that one comes across in
New York. Art critic Jerry
Saltz is a good example of
such a master storyteller.
You and I share a natural
ace-in-the-hole, which is
the reassuring rhythm of a
British accent. Its part
and parcel of this notion
of unreliability.
MOMUS: What are the seduc-
tive qualities of such an
accent, do you think?
SINGH: You need to assure
the members of an audience
that they are in the hands
of a trustworthy and amia-
ble guide, and it is only
little by little that you
start to distort, exag-
gerate and undermine thevery basis of what they
previously took to be so-
lid ground. Perhaps the
softer the power wielded
over the listeners, the
more insidious the nal
result? But following from
your earlier question, Id
say that there is no limit
to the tools that I would
use to enchant the liste-
ners. They may feel that
colored gels and dim lights
are puny weapons compared
to the slick acting and
climactic musical monta-
ges of standard Hollywood
fare, but the lilting voice
of the old man, his scar-
red face illuminated by
the ickering ames of the
reside, is a meme already
etched deep into their col-
lective unconscious.
MOMUS: Was there a Eureka
moment for you, when you
knew what kind of art it
was you wanted to make?
SINGH: Sadly, not yet. But
I will say that Ive spot-
ted the mountain range that
Id like to get to. What
lies in between here and
there is a mystery. I look
forward to encounters with
metaphorical ravines, rope
bridges and eldritch over-
grown temples on my way.
I think wed all like to
leave a substantial and
meaningful work behind when
were gone, a Don Giovannior a Canterbury Tales. But
the reality is that you
cant plan to make some-
thing like that. It may or
may not happen. It may not
even be that important.
After all, sometimes were
more interested in the

Kajsa Dahlberg in a conversation with Niklas stholm:curator and member of Index exhibition group
Niklas stholm: The work A Room of Ones Own/A Thousand Libraries con-sists of a book. In my view, there is in this specic project an exci-ting relationship between the form and content of the book. It is boundlike a library book, and put together by photocopies of the Swedishtranslation of Virginia Woolf s A Room Of Ones Own from 1929. Woolfs book could perhaps be described as an overview of female writersposition within the history of literature since it focuses womens pos -sibilities and their access to this history. Furthermore: how womenscreativity and what they actually write reaches public light, and howwomen enter the world of Academia. Altogether Woolf s starting pointis a true belief in the fact that also a woman has a need for a roomof her own. When I think of the bound books of the library, I imagine blue, brown, yellow and orange covers that is, quite strong colour markers. Also, awarm feeling of the Swedish folkhems ambition for adult education witha concept of equality bound into the design.Yet your book is completelywhite. To me this signals an object, a book which has been casted, hence another type of conservation than, say the library book, mightsuggest. Simultaneously I am struck by the thought of the white as atabula rasa; as a carte blanche of sorts. In this way, the form expres-ses an ambition to promote and give voice to the very ideas it contains, that is, Woolf s book and the comments written in it by numerousreaders. How did you start working on this piece?
Kajsa Dahlberg: What was really important to me in my work with the book and which also makes it relate to the video 20 Minutes (Female Fist) is the act of reading in one and the same time as a communicative andprivate space. What interests me the most is the description of a sub-jective position in relation to a larger system. For me this works inseveral layers: in Woolf attacking a patriarchal system; in the readersreactions on her text; and in their relation towards the library as aninstitution. There is nostalgia surrounding the library and the notionof adult education that of course is difcult to ignore. I was afraidthat one might read the book as a celebration of the library, which ofcourse may not be a problem. F irst I would like to make clear the workas a method of shedding light to a subjects relation to a system whichis larger than itself. A process that, on its own accord, might lead tothe formulation of new, different spaces. In this way, it has the pos-sibility of functioning, as you put it, a cart blanche.
The choice of keeping the book completely white also has a referenceto pirate copying, as a text-based equivalence to the white-label re-cords of the music world. The discussion surrounding copyright and itsantithesis copyleft is also a kind of public debate that interestsme a lot.My idea is furthermore to return the book to the libraries: Id like itto be re-registered without being given a certain given place in theshelves.
N: Many times, a large part ofthe artists material in the on -going research can be presentedas an archive open for any viewerto take part of. Do you ever askyourself the question where theprocess on the one handends, and the work on the other, actually starts?
KD: Well yes, I think that isreally difcult to know. It willalways take me some time to rea -lise where that limit is, and thenI am still not sure. My methodis quite process based and bothA Room of Ones Own/A ThousandLibraries and 20 Minutes (FemaleFist) consists of very protected
processes. For instance, I wasthinking a lot whether the bookshould contain a list of all con-tributing libraries, from whereall the notes came, or not.To me, it is always a balance,it is quite easy for me to getcaught up by the mere course ofthe events, and I rarely have aclear idea of a result when Istart a new project.
I can imagine that you to a gre-ater extent might get involvedthan if you have a very clearlyformulated idea from the start.Generally, I try to get rid of asmuch as possible of theprocess in the nal presentati-on. Most of the time I wish thatthe work should function indepen-dently. Not that I have somethingagainst a lot of information asan integratedpart of a work of art, actuallyI think it is rather interestingwith that kind of process moti-vated projects. What I fear ho-wever is that there will not beenough space left for the viewer.Perhaps, this is where the realmeeting happens, in my opinion.

Want
Heb ji nets o just alles te verbergen?

Toen k dt aanvroeg
toevoegng, heb k net voldoende nfor-
Bernardus Berntsen was.
