Je kijkt samen naar dat te veroordelen gedrag. Samen keuren we het af. Dan ben ik het kwijt. Dat is goed voor mijn mentale hygi- ene. Die vind ik minstens zo belangrijk als de geestestoestand van de patiënt. Daarna kan ik weer de dokter zijn. Dan kan ik weer een beetje houden van de incestpleger, de mepper, de snuiver en de chlamydiaverspreider. Ik heb geen hekel aan ze. ▪ Geen hekel aan patiënten Dokteren is leuker als je een beetje van je patiënten houdt. Dat is lastig als ze foute dingen doen. Wat zou u doen als de in- cestpleger intens verdrietig voor u zit, zijn verhaal vertelt, half stikkend in zijn schuldgevoel? Wat zegt u als iemand zijn vrouw mept? Wat te doen met de coca- inegebruiker die zijn hele bedrijf in zijn neus heeft gestopt? En dan de jongeman Nico van Duijn die gonorroe plus chlamydia in het dorp rondsproeit. Al zijn liees komen langs, met precies dezelfde bacteriën. Ik krijg het niet voor elkaar eerst begrip te tonen, vriendelijk het verhaal aan te horen zo- als een huisdokter hoort te doen. En dan voorzichtig op te merken: ‘Wat vindt u daar nu zelf van?’ Ik kan dat niet. Ik gooi direct mijn eigen moraal erin. Bijna im- pulsief zeg ik wat ik ervan vind. ‘Je meent het! Dat is fout, zeg!’ Of: ‘Hoe haal je het in je hoofd, dat meppen, dat snuiven, dat anderen onvruchtbaar maken!’

De kunst is niet de persoon te veroor-

Dokteren is leuker als je een beetje van je
patiënten houdt. Dat is lastig als ze foute
dingen doen. Wat zou u doen als de in-
cestpleger intens verdrietig voor u zit,

schuldgevoel? Wat zegt u als iemand zijn
