Thailand beach murders: Police 'detainthree Burmese migrant workers for

questioning' over deaths of British touristsDavid Miller and Hannah Witheridge

Police in Thailand are examining CCTV footage believed to show two Britishtourists leaving a bar just hours before their battered bodies were discoveredon a beach.

Officers want to locate an Asian-looking man, also captured by the cameras, whom they consider a prime suspect in the killings and reports said threeBurmese migrant workers had been detained for questioning.

As the bodies of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were flown toBangkok for forensic tests, more than 70 officers were on Tuesday involved inthe sweep of Koh Tao, the southern island where the the bodies of the tourists

were found in the early hours of Monday morning. Both had suffered severehead injuries.

As officers questioned tourists, locals and foreign workers as part of their

inquiry and collected DNA samples, a senior police official said footage from alocal bar appeared to show the Britons leaving hand-in-hand at around 1am.

Witnesses have said the two tourists later joined around 50 people for a partyon the beach. Police said the CCTV cameras had also captured a single man

    walking in the same direction.

Theywent out to a bar and left together after 1am, according to closed circuitTV camera footage, said senior police official Maj Gen KiattipongKhawsamang, according to the Associated Press.

Mr Kiattipong said the man seen later walking in the same direction appearedto be Asian and was considered a prime suspect, though he did not offer anyother evidence.

We are focusing on migrant workers because of the surrounding witnessesand evidence, including the video footage, he said. We are sweeping hotels,

bars, businesses and residences of migrant workers on the beach to find thesuspect.

The AFP later reported that three Burmese workers had been detained bypolice and were being questioned by officers.

The partly naked bodies of the two tourists were found less than 100 metresfrom the location of where the beach party had been held on Sunday night.Police said a blood-stained hoe was found near the bodies and officers suspectit was the murder weapon.

Mr Miller, from Jersey, and Ms Witheridge, from Great Yarmouth, hadtravelled to the island separately. Ms Witheridge, who was doing post-graduate

work at the the University of Essex in Colchester, was travelling with threefemale friends and had only arrived on Koh Tao, or Turtle Island, three daysago. Both she and Mr Miller were staying at the Ocean View Bungalows.

The bodies of the tourists were discovered at around 6.30am on Sai Ree beachby migrant workers from neighbouring Burma who were employed to clean thesands.

There is widespread discrimination against the Burmese people living andworking in Thailand. There are around 1m legally-registered Burmese workersin the country and perhaps as many as 1.5m unregistered Burmese.

Police had earlier said they also wanted to speak to a man, possibly a friend ofMr Miller, who had left the island on Monday morning. Another police official,Col Prachum Ruangthong, told the Associated Press that investigators werealso looking for a group of bar employees and had questioned a group offoreigners as well.

This morning we surrounded three locations, including the residences ofmigrant workers, to search and collect DNA, he said.

On Monday night, about 100 local people gathered on Sai Ree Beach for acandlelit vigil and said prayers for the murdered tourists.

Meanwhile, the Thai general who seized power in a coup earlier this year, called for the crime to be solved quickly. Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, who nowstyles himself Prime Minister after he was appointed by a hand-picked

parliament, said he was concerned that Thailands image could be damaged.

This should not have happened in Thailand, said Mr Prayuth. It will affectour image in the eyes of international countries.

After Waking From Coma, Girl Reunites

With The Dog That Saved Her Life

After spending nearly a week in a coma following a brutal assault by a stranger inher home, a 10-year-old girl from Pilar do Sul, Brazil has been reunited with the

one whom she sayssaved her life during the ordeal the family dog, a mixed

    breed named Kiara.

    WARNING: Disturbing description below.

The journalCruzeiro do Sul reports that the girl had been at home alone when a

stranger arrived and asked for a glass of water. When she agreed, the man came

inside and began to assault her. In a panic, the girl says she called for Kiara

whorushed in and began fighting back her attacker.

The normally docile dog was able to drive the man away by biting his legs, but

before he fled, the attacker struck the girl in the head with an object. She was still

alert when neighbors arrived to help, but lost consciousness soon after. The girl

was then taken to the hospital and put into a medically induced coma.

Her father, Sebastio dos Santos, says he had no idea that Kiara had saved his

daughter's life until she woke from the coma five days later anddescribed what

had happened. When I call to talk with her, she asks about her hero. She then went on to say

that if not for the dog, she would not be here to talk with us, dos Santos told

news station G1 Globo.Today, she asked me to put the phone to Kiaras ear and

she started talking and whistling to the dog. Kiara started barking and even tried

    to bite the phone.

On Tuesday, 11 days after the attack which doctors say left her no permanent

damage, the girl was released from the hospital. Once back home, she was greeted

by friends and family, but sheturned her attention to the dog.

Thank you for saving me Kiara, she said.

There was a time when we thought of giving Kiara away, but we wont get rid of

her anymore, says the girls father. First, it was God who helped save my

daughter. Secondly, it was the dog, our hero.

Police have sinceapprehended a person suspected of the assault based on the

girls description of him, and a few important clues left behind by Kiara bite

Pakistani passenger power forcespoliticians off planePassengers on a Pakistan International Airline (PIA) flight from Karachi

barred two politicians from boarding the aircraft after the two VIPs delayed theflight by over two hours.

A video clip was posted online showing Senator Rehman Malik and Dr RameshKumar Wakwani, a Member of National Assembly, being ejected from theIslamabad-bound flight by angry passengers.

The disgruntled passengers can be heard grumbling, "So-called VIPs" and "Myfoot VIPs" as they wait for the two delayed politicians aboard the aircraft. Theycan be heard talking to PIA crew who seem to be attempting to calm the

    travellers down.

"No, no, no, sir," one of the passengers responds. "We've taken it for too long. For 68 years. Are we going to take it for another 68 years?"

Then Senator Malik can be seen walking towards the plane, only for thepassengers to begin shouting at the politician to turn back.

Malik sahab, sorry. You should go back. You should apologise to thesepassengers. You should be ashamed of yourself 250 passengers have suffered

because of you. It is your fault, sir.

As Malik argues with the passengers, one traveller replies, "You are not aminister anymore!"

Rehman Malik was Pakistan's Interior Minister between 2008 and 2013.

Meanwhile, Dr Ramesh Kumar Wakwani was forced out of his seat as peoplechanted "shame, shame, shame".

As he left the aircraft, most of the 250 passengers applauded.

"There are times when something you dream of actually happens, like SenatorRehman Malik getting booted off that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)flight," wrote Rabia Ahmed in a blog post for Pakistan'sExpress Tribune.

However, a spokesperson for PIA said that the delay was due to a technicalissue and that they had informed people of this via text message.

Furthermore, Rehman Malik took to Twitter to defend himself and that PIAshould be blamed for the flight's delay and not himself.
