• Identificationofandadherencetotheappropriateanimalhealthandwelfarelegislation,associatedcodesofpracticeandotherlegislationrelevanttotheanimalsbeingconsidered.
• Practicalapplicationofknowledgerelatedtogatheringevidencefromallsourcesofinformationaboutthebehaviourofcompanionanimalsandtheproblem(s)forwhichadviceisbeingsought.Thismightbebydirectobservation,discussionwithowner/keeper,assessmentssuppliedbyveterinarysurgeonsorcasehistories.Criticalevaluationofthequalityofthisevidence,distinguishingbetweencompetingcauses,assumptionandexplanationsforthebehaviourandtheabilitytoactappropriatelytoremedyareasofconcernordeficiencyofinformation.
• Abilitytoevaluatetheimpactofexternalandinternalfactorsonbehaviourandwelfareproblemsandonthoseforwhichhelpisbeingsought.
• Abilitytoevaluatetheimpactofhusbandry/managementpracticesandhandlinghasonthebehaviouroftheanimal,theproblem(s)andareasofconcernidentifiedandthoseforwhichhelpisbeingsought.
• Abilitytodevisethemostappropriate,structured,legallycompliantandhumanetreatmentregime(trainingexercises,trainingaidsandbehaviourmodificationtechniques)likelytoeffectivelyaddresstheproblem(s)andconcernsidentifiedintheanimal'sparticularsetofcircumstances.

Coursecontents • Practicalapplicationoftheinsightsofpsychology,neuroscience/cognitivescienceandprinciplesofethologyandlearningtheorytotheprevention,diagnosisandtreatmentofcommonbehaviourandwelfareproblemsusingcasestudies,groupworkandshelteranimals.
• Practicalapplicationofmanagementstrategies,handlingtechniques,trainingtechniques,trainingaidsandbehaviourmodificationtechniquesusingcasestudies,groupworkandshelteranimals.
• Practicalexercisesinthecommunicationskillspertinenttobehaviourcounselling.
• Conductingariskassessmentandwelfareassessment.
Plannedlearningactivitiesandteachingmethods
• Oneweekinternshipatananimalbehaviourclinicwhileworkingwithshelteranimals.
Assessmentmethodsandcriteria • Continuousevaluation.Participationduringthewholeweekisobligatory.
• Demonstrationofcompetenceinhandlingskills,applicationoftrainingtechniquesandbehaviourmodificationtechniquesinaccordancewithlearningtheory,useoftrainingandotheraids.

• Individuallycomposedassignment(s).• Grading:thedemonstrationofcompetenceinhandlingand
trainingandbehaviourmodificationtechniquesandthewrittenassignmenteachloadfor50%ofthetotalmark.Thedemonstrationofhandling,trainingandbehaviourmodificationtechniquesandtheassignmenthavetobepassedseparately,forwhichaminimumof50%ofeachhastobeachieved.
