I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Sale and his team at Horley Town FC for their hospitality and I hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.

This is our second and final season here at The New Defence, ahead of our exciting move back to our old home in Meadowbank, which will be transformed into our iconic new

home. As we continue our development at Dorking FC the new leadership team are very excited about this, their second season. Our vision remains focused on continuing to

rebuild Dorking FC as a respected football club but also as a social enterprise by re-establishing Dorking FC as an iconic club at the heart of its rural community.

The football management team have worked tirelessly over the summer and I would like to thank them for all their efforts. A big welcome back to our squad of players plus a number of exciting new players joining us. We have some bright young talent coming through our

club and once again I expect we will see a good number of our U18’s appearing for our first team.

A huge thanks go to my fellow Board members, all of our volunteer helpers, our football management team and of course our loyal supporters. We hope you will follow us on our journey, grassroots football is important to us all, and Dorking FC hopes to make its own

contribution to the benefit of everyone.

Dorking started this game on the club’s best run of results for six years. After this convincing win over high flying Staines made it five wins on the bounce, the Chicks’ supporters have stopped looking back into the history books - confident that the club is on the verge of writing a new chapter, with success on and off the pitch.

Manager Glynn Stephens knows it’s far too early to start talking of Dorking going on a promotion push as they prepare to return to Meadowbank next season, but his team is still enjoying heady days.

Goals from Glen Wright and Martin Smith were enough for the Chicks to claim their latest scalp, and Stephens’ men showed great character to ensure the game didn’t slip away after Paul Burrows’ 57th minute header brought Staines back into a game that Dorking had controlled up to that point.

The Chicks had by far the best of the first half and took the lead on 28 minutes when Daniel Akinwande, having his strongest game to date in the Cockerel Colours, battled to win yet another challenge in the centre of midfield and set Kieran Lunn free down the left wing with a beautifully weighted through ball. Lunn then drove into the box and pulled the ball back for Wright to score into an empty net.

The midfield dominance of Akinwande, winning everything in the air and on the ground, left Staines unable to get a foothold in the game and the chances kept coming for the home side. Smith let fly from some 25 yards, following a delightful set up from Lunn, but the first half ended with Dorking deservedly leading 1-0, the back four denying Staines a single attempt on goal.

Within two minutes of the restart, the Chicks extended their lead when a ball over the top from right back Zach Powell put Smith through to power a shot past the Staines keeper.

Credit must go to Staines who doubled their own efforts and were rewarded with a goal, but the Chicks defence never looked likely to be troubled further, as full back John Jupp started to find himself in more advanced positions, putting some quality balls into the Staines box. Despite maintaining control, the Chicks couldn’t convert possession into more goals, leaving the final scoreline suggesting the game was closer than it was.

Dorking are in a rich vein of form at the moment playing quality football with a great team spirit and will go into tonight’s home cup tie against Premier side Knaphill knowing they have a chance to compete with their higher division opponents, before looking to extend the winning run at Abbey Rangers in the league on Saturday.

MEADOWBANK UPDATE: NO. 2‘LOVE FOOTBALL, LOVE YOUR

COMMUNITY, JOIN DORKING FC!

Dorking FC is looking for new volunteers to join the running of thecommunity-based club in a new Management Committee, as it gets in shape for a return home to the new Meadowbank football ground in 2016.

Work will start at the end of this month on the rebuilding of the Chicks’ traditional home at Meadowbank. In just under a year, Dorking FC will return to the town at the heart of a new, state-of-the-art stadium, providing an exciting sports facility for the whole community. Over a thousand local youth players will join the club at the new Meadowbank, taking advantage of the all-weather artificial pitch for weekly training sessions. Surrey FA have also announced that they are moving their headquarters to the site, making Dorking’s home ground the centre of football in the county.

Plans for the exciting move home start now. Dorking FC is a not-for-profit organisation, run on an entirely voluntary basis and in accordance with true amateur sport values, in the interests of the community. In preparation for next season, the club is now recruiting to some key, voluntary posts on a new Management Committee.

Chairman Grant Ashley says, “Since taking over and rescuing Dorking FC last year, the club has been run by a Board of just five volunteer Directors. The foundations for survival have been laid and, with the return to acompletely rebuilt Meadowbank ground, this is now one of the mostexciting times and opportunities in the club’s 135 year history. So the time is right for us to open up the running of the club to local people in a new Management Committee.”

Grant goes on to explain, “We want as many local people as possible who love football and love their community to get involved in establishing this great new sporting project for the town. If we all work together to get this right, we’ll have a fantastic new Dorking football facility in Meadowbank park, used by thousands of local people, bringing a huge boost to the town centre, and with a thriving community-orientated football club at its heart.”

Dorking FC is looking for local people to join the new Voluntary Management Committee in three key roles:• Fundraising Manager• Club Supporters and Membership Manager• Youth and Community Engagement Manager

In addition, there are opportunities for people who would like to help out in any other way to join the club in non-specific assistant roles.

Fundraising ManagerWorking both alone and with others, the Fundraising Manager will help develop new sources of revenue, from traditional sponsorship and advertising by local business to creative fundraising ideas and projects.

Club Supporters and Membership ManagerAs the work continues at Meadowbank and interest builds throughout 2016 in the community facility and Dorking FC’s return, the Club Supporters and Membership Manager will tap into that local enthusiasm to engage with local people who might wish to follow the football club and make use of its facilities at Meadowbank - building a new, thriving membership and supporter base for the town’s historic football club.

Youth and Community Engagement ManagerWith hundred of players from at least seven youth football clubs, local schools and other community groups all expected to make use of Meadowbank alongside Dorking FC, the Youth and Community Engagement Manager will work to liaise with other users and community groups, ensuring constructive and productive relationships. We aim to work together to maximise the potential not just for all the voluntary groups involved in the new stadium, but for the whole of Dorking, in what is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference for local football, Meadowbank park, community activity in the town centre, local business and the entire town.

THE HISTORY OF DORKING FCFootball has been played in Dorking since the 1830’s. It was first played in the street, and an annual ‘match’ took place every Shrove Tuesday in

Dorking’s High Street. Those on the east of St Martin’s were one team known as the East-enders and those to the West, on the opposing team, were the Westenders. The “pitch” extended all the way from London Bridge Road to the Washway Bridge in Station Road.

The match was preceded by a procession led by a band and men dressed as women collecting donations and carry-ing a cross inscribed with words “kick away both Whig and Tory, wind and water, Dork-ing’s glory”. On the left of the cross was a red, white, and blue ball representing the Union, on the top a gold ball representing the winners, and on the right a red and green ball representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking. Celebra-tions went on well into the evening when pre‐match collections were first distributed to shopkeepers for window damage and the balance con-sumed in beer at The Sun.

This tradition continued until 1905 when it was outlawed after ten years of suppression, and by which time Association Football had defined formal

rules for the game in 1863 (dic-tating kicking only) when rugby went one way with hands, and “soccer” (abbreviation for Asso-ciation Football) went the other with feet. By now Dorking Foot-ball Club had formed in 1880, establishing itself as the second oldest football club in

Surrey and one of the oldest in the country. The club originally played in green and red striped shirts with white shorts – the three colours representing the famous Dorking cockerel.

The cockerel was also very apparent as the main feature of the club’s badge, and hence the club soon became affec-tionately known as “the Chicks”.

The team first played at a site on West Bank before moving to a pitch off Fairfield Drive and then later to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. The Chicks didn’t move to its current location at Meadowbank until 1953 when their success demanded better facilities and a new ground was built on an old dumpsite.

The new Meadowbank had a capacity of 5000 and a stand that accommodated 700. The ground was opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous and was inaugurated by an exhibition match against Corin-thian Casuals. Dorking’s most successful FA Cup run followed in 1955 when they beat Folkestone 3 – 1 in front of a home crowd of more than 4000 before going out in the next

round to local rivals Epsom. In the 1950s annual spectator club membership stood at more than 1000.

KNAPHILL FC:CLUB HISTORY

Knaphill Football Club began its life in 1924 at Waterer’s Park, which was left to Woking Urban District Council in 1924 by Mr Anthony Waterer of Knaphill Nursery. The Recreation Ground was originally part of the nursery called “Blue Gates Field” and the park was laid out by Woking Council between 1924 and 1928. Very little history is known or available about the Club between 1924 and 1980. In 1980, Knaphill were represented in the Old Woking and District League (now Guildford and Woking Alliance League) in Division 3

under Manager Dave Holloway. Dave took them from Division 3 through promotion to the Surrey Intermediate League.

Mick Garbutt became the Manager of Knaphill in 1990, but in 1994 departed to join up with Colin Lippiatt and Geoff Chapple at Woking. In 1996 David Freeman took over from

First Team Manager Greg Anderson, who was in charge for just one season 1995/96. Sean Carrigy was Reserve Team Manager. Season 2002/03 saw 2 new men at the helm with

Mick Garbutt in charge of the 1st Team and Frank Walters the Reserves.

Season 2005/2006 was destined to be a big season for the club with the club established at new ground at Redding Way and the’ A’ team reverting back to Waterers Park having

had the facilities rebuilt. 1st Team Manager David Freeman continued in charge for the 2005/2006 campaign and appointed former professional with Bristol City, Bob Pritchard,

who had also managed at senior level with Chertsey Town. The 2005/2006 season did prove successful as we won the Division One title on the last day of the season against

nearest rivals Virginia Water and gained promotion to the Premier Division.2006/2007 continued with David Freeman in charge of the 1st Team who claimed back to back titles by winning the Premier Division Championship which resulted in us achieving promotion to the Combined Counties Football League, the most successful period in the clubs history up to then. Bob Pritchard took over from David Freeman as Manager who

then became Bob’s assistant during September 2007. They took the team to a very com-mendable 7th place in the CCL, our first in senior football. Steve Hutton led the Reserves

campaign, with a massive 40 games in the season.

The 2008/09 season started with former Bisley and Farnborough Assistant Manager, Ian Savage joining the Club as player/coach. The team kept a high profile in the League stay-

ing in the top half of the table all season, eventually finishing in fifth place. They could have become champions had they won their last game of the season when, in a tightly bunched set of teams in the top six. Knaphill on 69pts needed to win at Farleigh to pip

Staines Lammas to the title. Disappointingly they lost 3-2, so near yet so far. The Reserves finished ninth in their Division with the second half of the season providing a 17 match sequence losing just two games. The 2009/10 season saw the team finish third in Divi-

sion One, their best placing in the three seasons in the Combined Counties League. Third would normally have gained the Club promotion, but due to the proposed floodlights installation being delayed, Knaphill had to make another challenge for promotion in

2010/11. The team won 26 out of their 40 league games, losing 10 with 4 drawn, scoring 98 goals and finished with 82 points.

Season 2010/11 was one of two halves for the first team, having suffered a poor string of results in the first four months of the season, the turn of the year went onto see an un-beaten run of 12 matches. But the run was not enough to see us get close enough to a

promotion place, and after reaching fifth in the table in the final run in.. The newly formed Knaphill Youth U18s, played their first season in the Allied Counties League, and reached

the final of the Grant McLellan Youth Cup, but lost 2-0 to Bedfont Sports. The 2011/12 season saw Knaphill entering the FA Vase for the first time, and the team finished 12th in Division One. Our Youth team reached the Grant McLellan Cup final for the second year running, but were beaten finalists. Chairman Terry Chapman stood down as Chairman,

So season 2013/14 emerged with Phil Ruggles as 1st team Manager, and Steve Pearman as his Assistant, and players wise, many new faces in the squad, It was Knaphill;s seventh

season in the Combined Counties League, and it proved to be a season that showed more progression for the Club. Promotion to the Premier Division ! There was also a nice ‘mini run’ in the FA Vase with wins over Badshot Lea, Tadley Calleva and Dorking, before going

out of the competition at home to East Preston. League success saw Knaphill gain promo-tion to the Premier Division.

More progress came in the Club’s 90th year when the 2014/15 season saw Knaphill make their debut in the Premier Division, and entry into the FA Cup for the first time. It was a

tough first season in the Premier, but they stabilised their position and April was their best month of the League season with an unbeaten sequence with four wins and a draw, accu-mulated 13 points out of a possible fifteen, to push the team up to a healthier finish in theLeague, just a couple of points under the halfway placings in the table. In the FA Cup and

FA Vase the team played three rounds in both Competitions. Wins against Fairford Town and Badshot Lea before losing to Fleet Town in the FA Cup, whilst in the FA Vase saw wins at Woodley

Town and Lordswood, and like the FA Cup, lost in their third match of the FA Vase away to Hanworth Villa. The Club were in the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time during last sea-son, but were knocked out of the competition by Colliers Wood. Manager Phil Ruggles

left the Club in January with Keith Hills taking over as caretaker Manager for the remain-der of the season. Keith and everyone at Knaphill will be looking for further progress with

League, FA Cup, FA Vase, and other Cup competitions on their agenda for the 2015/16 season.
