• Section Highlights

o Delhi Section is under large section category and is among the fastest growing in sections in IEEE. IEEE Delhi Section has as per latest (January 2018) statistics 4562 active Members (excluding Society Affiliates), consisting of 0 Honorary Member, 6 Life Fellow, 8 Fellow, 35 Life Senior, 277 Senior Member, 5 Life Member, 1367 Member, 52 Associate Member, 687 Graduate Student Member, 2125 Student Member.

o We have 2 subsections, 14 society chapters and 4 Affinity groups. There are 100+ student branches and branch chapters in Delhi Section.

o IEEE's core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity, hence, Section is committed towards education, professional development and society development. Several events were organized this year in different areas of technology.

o This year 207 activities were organized by the Section, Society Chapters and Affinity groups. These include Technical lectures by several society Chapters, distinguished lectures, the events especially designed for Graduate Student Members, Women Engineers, young professionals and several Conferences.

o IEEE Day has been organised at various Institutes with great enthusiasm. o Also keeping up with the past tradition, to motivate subsections, this year also the fourth exec com meeting was

organised at Jaipur (Rajasthan Subsection). o Also, a special exec com meeting was organised on 6th Nov 2017 to welcome and meet the IEEE President 2018

- Jim Jefferies and IEEE-ED and COO Dr. Jim Prendergast. o Registration of Delhi Section as Society is in its final stages, all the relevant documents have been submitted and

the approval is awaited. o PES-IAS Delhi Chapter remains one of the most vibrant chapters of the section and conducted total of 57

activities. Chapter won 2016 IEEE PES Outstanding Chapter Award for Large Chapter, IAS Outstanding Chapter Award 2017 and IAS Continued Outstanding Performance Large Chapter Award 2017 for activities carried out in year 2016.

o This year PES-IAS and PELS-IES Delhi Chapter supported first ever Women in Power conference held on March 12th and 13th, 2017 at IHC Delhi. There were expert lectures by Industry resource persons from PowerGrid, Comed, GE etc from USA, Bangladesh, India and also a panel discussion focussing on the changes that are affecting the Power Industry apart from delivering insight on professional and personal development for the attendees.

o PELS-IES chapter has also organized many activities. A talk on ‘Smart Distribution Systems and Smart Professional Networking with IEEE’ by Prof. Noel Schulz, IEEE PES President, 2012-2013, Washington State University has been organised on Nov. 21st, 2017 at IIT Delhi.

o EDS Delhi Chapter has been awarded "Chapter of the year award" 2017 by IEEE EDS. This is the second time that Delhi Chapter has been nominated for this prestigious award. Also, EDS Delhi Chapter Execom member Dr. Manoj Saxena has been nominated as BoG member of IEEE EDS.

2 o IMS/ EMBS Joint Chapter also has organised many activities including technical talks, Interactive/Industry

Meetings and a National Seminar.

o 4th R. K. Vir Memorial lecture on ‘Gas Insulated Switchgear’ was delivered by Mr. Guenther Hans Besser, GIS Factory Head, Siemens Ltd. on January 4, 2017 at Auditorium of National Rail Museum, Chanakya Puri, New Delhi. This technical event which is held annually on 4th January in the memory of Late Er R K Vir, Past Chair IEEE Section, was supported by three other leading technical societies i.e., Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) and Institution of Railway Electrical Engineers (IREE).

o Many talks and workshops were organized under Communication, Computer, computational intelligence, TEMS, MTT and CAS-CS Chapters.

o This year 06 conferences have been organized under Delhi Section. For the year 2018, 07 conferences have already been approved and many are in pipeline.

o Many activities were performed under HTC including World Environment Day on 5th June 2017, visit to village on 4th October 2017 and a debate on Delhi Pollution on 12th Dec 2017. All these activities are well attended and are appreciated by all.

o IEEE Delhi SAC organized various activities. A workshop on "Cloud Computing on Azure Platform" was organised on 25th February 2017, "Technical writings and Publishing" on 13 April 2017, hardware hackathon in association with Texas Instruments on was organized on 25th March 2017, Awareness program on 15th November, 2017. IEEE Delhi SAC organized its Annual Award ceremony on 28th April, 2017 at IGDTUW. Section Student Congress was organized on 28-29th October 2017 at NSIT and was attended by 200 delegates. Out of approximately 100 student branches in IEEE Delhi Section, there are now almost 40 student branches which are actively participating and are conducting activities and events under IEEE.

o Many Awards were received by Student Branches and their members.

o Delhi Section received the 2017 Outstanding Section Membership Retention Performance award.

o Women in Engineering affinity group has organized an ‘Open House Project Presentation’ on 29th April. The project presentation included two parallel tracks on hardware and software domains and the participants were judged in one of the areas according to their project types.

o New WIE student branch affinity group was formed at Poornima University and a technical seminar on ‘Cellular Communication System Evolution: 1G-5G’ was organised.

o Young Professionals, Life members and Consulting networks affinity groups have also organized talks and workshops this year.

• Major Events (International, National)

This year 06 conferences have been organized under Delhi Section namely,

• 11th INDIACom i.e. INDIACom – 2017; 4th International Conference on Computing for Sustainable Global Development (INDIACom) organized by BVICAM, New Delhi from March 1st - 3rd, 2017.

• 2017 International Conference on Computer, Communications and Electronics (Comptelix) organized at Manipal University, Jaipur, from July 1 to 2, 2017,

• 2017 International Conference on Computing and Communication Technologies for Smart Nation (IC3TSN) being organized by Department of Computer Science and Engineering, GD Goenka University, Sohna Gurgaon, from October 12 to 14, 2017,

• 2017 3rd International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON) being organized by Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, Punjab, from November 16 to 18, 2017,

• 2017 Fourth International Conference on Image Information Processing (ICIIP -2017) being organized by Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Solan, from December 21 to 23, 2017.

The conferences were widely announced, well attended and quality papers were presented. For the year 2018, 07 conferences have already been approved and many are in pipeline.

• Major Chapter Activities

PES-IAS Delhi Chapter remains one of the most vibrant chapters of the section and conducted total of 57 activities. Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture (21st in the series) was delivered by Prof. Chanan Singh, Regents Professor and Irma Runyon Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Texas A&M University,

3 College Station, Texas on the topic "Resource Diversification to accommodate intermittency and improve reliability" on 11th Oct 2017 at IIT Delhi. A DL was delivered by Dr. Mukesh Nagpal on 2nd Feb 2017 on ‘Experience of Severe Overvoltage in an Interconnected Transmission Subnetwork during Single-Phase Open Period’. Another PES DL talk on 'Hybrid Renewable Energy Standalone Systems’ was delivered by Prof. Ambrish Chandra, Professor Department of Electrical Engineering, École de technologie supérieure, Canada on 6th Nov.2017. PES Chapter has won ‘2016 IEEE PES Outstanding Chapter Award’ for Large Chapter. As the winner, the Chapter will receive $1000, plaques for the officers and 2016 Outstanding Chapter banner. Chapter also won IAS Outstanding Chapter Award 2017 and IAS Continued Outstanding Performance Large Chapter Award 2017 for activities carried out in year 2016. Prof. Bhim Singh has received the prestigious IEEE PES Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award for advancements in active filters, three-phase multipulse converters and power quality improvement in solar PV grid interconnected systems. The Chapter has conferred Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award to Prof. Rachana Garg.

This year PES-IAS and PELS-IES Delhi Chapter supported first ever Women in Power conference held on March 12th and 13th, 2017 at IHC Delhi. EDS Delhi Chapter has been awarded "Chapter of the year award" 2017 by IEEE EDS. This is the second time that Delhi Chapter has been nominated for this prestigious award. IEEE EDS Distinguished Lecturer Talk on "Statistical analysis of Reliability test data" was organized by the chapter in association with Department of Electronic Science, Univ of Delhi South Campus and Department of Electronics and Communication Engg Amity School of Engineering & Technology. The speaker was Prof. Cher Ming Tan, Director, Center for Reliability Sciences and Technologies Chang Gung University. Prof. Vijay K Arora of VSG-International has delivered a talk on ‘Graphene Nanotechnology–Past, Present and Future’.

IMS/ EMBS Joint Chapter also has organised 35 activities including technical talks, Interactive/Industry Meetings and a National Seminar.

Ms. Ayushi Jain (Mody University of Technology and Science) from Rajasthan Subsection received the IEEE Upsilon Pi Epsilon Scholarship, Himanshu Sahdev (NIEC) won the first prize in Video and Photo contests organised on IEEE Open Engineer Mobile Application, Keerti Gautam of IGDTUW received IEEE James O. Gray Scholarship, Keerti Gautam (IGTUW), Saksham Saxena (DTU), Mr. Sanyam Goel (BVP), Ms. Arushi Relan (NIEC), Ms. Deepali Jain (MSIT) and Mr. Nikhil Kumar Mishra (DTU) from Delhi Section received the IEEE Richard E. Merwin Student Scholarship.

5 PART B - ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES

B.1 Membership Development Activities

• Total number of active members in the past 3 years.

• Summary and evidence of work done to improve the value of membership, which leads to retention and growth of members.

Talks were delivered in many institutions in Delhi, viz., JMI, PGDM and many other institutions to introduce them to the benefits of IEEE. Also, the conference organisers have been asked to put up a stall where the benefits of IEEE membership are explained to the participants and on-the-spot membership application are taken.

o The Section organizes 6 conferences in 2017 and 7 conferences have already been approved for 2018 and many more are in pipeline.

o A faculty development program on ‘Internet of Things’ was organised on 29 Dec 2017.

o One day National Seminar on Recent Advances and Challenges Faced in GaN HEMT Technology" was organised by Chandigarh sub section on 19th Aug. 2017.

o 2017 IEEE CIS Winter School Workshop on Computational Intelligence: Tools and Techniques for Smart Grid Solutions was organised on 28th Dec 2017.

o National Seminar on Recent Developments in Electronic Materials and Devices, by EDS society on 10th Nov 2017.

o One day workshop on Industrial Automation and PLC on 29th march 2017 by EDS Society.

o Workshop for YP and WIE on Finite Element Modeling for Engineering Applications on 4th Dec 2017 by PES-IAS Delhi Chapter.

o Short term training programming on Application of Techniques/Tools in Engineering on 9th Oct 2017 by PELS-IES Delhi chapter.

B.4 Students Activities

• Section level student activities (student congress, paper and other contests, awards etc) Following are the events organized by IEEE Delhi SAC in the academic year of 2017:

o A workshop on "Cloud Computing on Azure Platform" was organised. The workshop was held at Jamia Hamdard on 25th Feb 2017 and around 100 participants from across the section attended the event. The workshop was a golden platform for students to learn from the experts from Microsoft. The hands on workshop was a platform which guided and edified the concepts of trending computing schemes. Free azure passes were given to all participants.

o A hardware hackathon in association with Texas Instruments on was organized on 25th March, 2017 along with IEEE BKBIET. The them for the competition is ‘Smart Railways’.

o With all the enthusiasm and efforts, IEEE Delhi SAC organized a workshop on "Technical writings and publishing". The event which was hosted by Ambedkar Institute of Advanced Communication Technologies on 13 April 2017 was a successful manifestation. Around 100 participants from across the section attended the workshop to learn articulation of technical and research work.

o IEEE Delhi Section SSN organized its Annual Award ceremony to laud the efforts of student volunteers and Branch counsellors across the section for the session 2016-17. The event which was held on 28 April, 2017 at IGDTUW, was attended by around 60 award recipients.

o IEEE Delhi Section hosted it’s one of the biggest annual events IEEE Delhi Section Student Congress 2017 at NSIT on 28th and 29th, October 2017. DSC gave a big opportunity to over 200 student delegates to learn and network with industry partners and sponsors. It also facilitated interaction among various student branches across the section. DSC provided with a great platform for sharing ideas and grooming the interpersonal and professional skills.

o In order to spread awareness among fellow IEEE Members, Section Student Representative, Ms. Jhanak Johri, interacted with the Student Branch Members of IEEE Jamia Millia Islamia on 15th November, 2017.

Summary of events organized by some of the student branches under Delhi Section are as follows:

7 1. IGDTUW- Events like IOT fiesta, workshops on various upcoming technologies, panel discussions were organized. A 3-D printing competition Tinkerfest was organized too. Self-Interest Groups (SIGs, special outreach programs and IEEE week celebration were also part of the academic session. 2. MSIT- Events like summer project exhibition, RES visits, workshops and outreach programs were taken up by the student branch of MSIT. IEEE week celebration and Annual flagship event of Technical Project Exhibition was also a part of their activities curriculum. 3. NIEC- Events like Res visits, Women’s Day celebration and various seminars were conducted by the student branch. Flagship events of the student branch, namely Technorax, IEEE day celebration and Mock IEEEXtreme, were also organized. 4. ASET- The IEEE branch of ASET has conducted numerous events in the past. All the events have been a major success, and some of the trademark events conducted by the student branch include Class -To-Class Membership drive, GBM, IOT workshop. 5. DTU- Every year, IEEE DTU organizes a host of activities. Starting with the TechWeek, a host of workshops include Robotics and Embedded Systems, Programming, Verilog, Designing, etc. They also have Programming, Web-Development, Robotics and Embedded Systems, Designing, Machine Learning, Animation, Open Source Development SIGs presently. 6. MAIT- IEEE MAIT organized a successful Techweek which had workshops on Embedded Systems, Digital Image Processing/Digital Signal Processing using MATLAB and Programming basics. The IEEE Day 2017, with students from different colleges participating, comprised of both technical and non-technical events such as Cortex2.0, Nexus, Game of Bots, EL-ROBOTICO and Fuzed. 7. NSIT student branch was the host for Delhi Section Student Congress, 28-29th October 2017, attended by 200 students.

B.5 Affinity Group Activities

• Young Professional (YP) YPs have organized 5 activities including an outbound trip for River rafting to Rishikesh

• CN Affinity Group: CN Affinity group has conducted 4 activities including an Industrial Tours to Tata Solar Power Plant of 1 MW capacity, Delhi, and SuKam R&D Center & Manufacturing Plant of Solar Power Plant, Maneshwar (Haryana) Women In Engineering (WIE) The major activities organized by WIE Delhi section are: Women in Engineering affinity group has organized an ‘Open House Project Presentation’ on 29th April. The project presentation included two parallel tracks on hardware and software domains and the participants were judged in one of the areas according to their project types. New WIE student branch affinity group was formed at Poornima University and a technical seminar on ‘Cellular Communication System Evolution: 1G-5G’ was organised.

• Life Member: The LM affinity group has been formed on 05/27/2017 only and till now they had reported 3 activities, including the AGM of the group.

B.6 Awards & Recognition Activities

• Award constituted by the Section: The section is in the process of instituting awards for outstanding Volunteers and young engineers. The awards winners of the section were felicitated in the annual general meeting with their citations being read out, to encourage others. PES Delhi chapter annually award ‘Outstanding Chapter Engineer Award’ to the deserving member of the chapter. Section also gives ‘J.K.Pal memorial Award’ and ‘Outstanding student Volunteer award’ to one final year and one pre-final year student of each student branch. ‘Outstanding Branch counselor award’ is also given to the top three branch counselors of the section. • Please list all Awards and Recognitions received by the Section, and members in the Section, from R 10 and

• Membership growth and retention Members from Industries are regularly inducted in the exec com of section and society chapters to increase the participation from industries. Also, the conference organisers have to put up a stall where the benefits of IEEE membership are explained to the participants and on-the-spot membership application are taken.

• Activities for/with industrial members

The section introduced Ad Hoc committees Industry Relations and Membership development. Many technical talks were presented by experts from Industries. PES-IAS Delhi chapter has organized a IEEE Industry Inteaction: Real time simulation at Robert Bosch Research Centre India on 8th Nov.2017.

B.9 Humanitarian Technology Activities

• Humanitarian Technology related activities supported by the Section including collaboration with other OUs. • SIGHT Activities

Many activities were performed under HTC and SIGHT including

o World Environment Day on 5th June 2017, at Select City Walk Mall, New Delhi. This celebration was done in an unparalleled way like the Tulsi plants were distributed to the visitors. A type of awareness was tried to spread among people for the sake of protecting our own environment. Plantation of trees was also done in the garden of mall and the children were very excited while joining their hands for such a great cause.

o Visit to village on 4th October 2017 In line with IEEE vision of penetration of technology across humanity, it was decided by IEEE Delhi Section Executive Committee that Delhi Section SIGHT organize a visit to Village which is deprived of technological progress available to urban areas. The visit was organized in collaboration with UNIC.

9 o Debate on Delhi Pollution on 12th Dec 2017. The level of pollution is increasing day by day in India and

other countries. The situation is more awful in Delhi/NCR. Recently pollution levels went up so high that Delhi life almost came to a stop. We cannot sit and watch, we have to come out with something innovative to make a change. UN also has been making efforts in this direction IEEE has a punch line itself saying “Advancing Technology for Humanity”. To have a small contribution as to what can be done to deal with this problem, IEEE Delhi Section SIGHT & HTC organized this event in collaboration with UN.

All these activities are well attended and are appreciated by all. These activities are supported by other society chapters like PES-IAS, PELS-IES etc.

B.10 Community Activities

• IEEE Social activities (Family day, IEEE day, Engineers Week)” o IEEE Day has been organised at various Institutes with great enthusiasm. o In AGM of Delhi Section, the family of IEEE members are also invited. Many members attend the AGM

Jim Jefferies and IEEE-ED and COO Dr. Jim Prendergast. o Also, first ever Women in Power conference held on March 12th and 13th, 2017 at IHC Delhi.

Venue was provided free of cost which helps in cost reduction.

2018 IEEMA Engineer Infinite Conference (eTechNxT) (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/conferencedetails/index.html?Conf_ID=42767) being organized by IEEMA at India Exposition Mart Ltd, Greater Noida, Delhi NCR, India during March 13-14, 2018 (http://sites.ieee.org/engineer-infinite2018/) is being organized along with UP section.

C.4 Support extended to Sub-sections & Society Chapters within the Section

• Support extended for organising technical, educational and professional activities Financial support is provided to all the society chapters and affinity groups and SIGs.

• Joint activities for membership development

The Section encourages chapters to hold joint activities so that they benefit more members like PES-IAS Delhi Chapter and PELS-IES Delhi chapter organizes most of their activities jointly.

• Support extended for the formation of a Sub-section or transition of a Sub-section into a full Section

There are now 2 sub-sections in Delhi Section. Section provides support to both the sub sections. Rajasthan sub-section is a newly formed subsection, hence special attention is paid for its development.

the benefits of members) • Webex meetings for cost effective meetings • Support for Industrial tours for students • To support sub-sections, every year atleast one exec com meeting is held in any one of the subsection.

involved in IEEE activities is also difficult.

PART D - GOALS AND PLANS D.1 Continuation of project/activity in progress and their implementation

plans o Every year HTC, SIGHT and WIE are doing activities for the uplifting of weaker sections of the society.

The section would definitely like to continue with these activities. o The Delhi section is approving conferences only after due considerations and are following the norms

strictly. In future also we will be judiciously giving approval to the conferences. D.2 Goals and Future Plans To focus more on retention of members and to involve YPs and Industry people in section activities. D.3 Any innovative ideas to make IEEE more creative and value added for sustaining the

membership retention and recruitment goals. The conference organisers may put up stall where the benefits of IEEE membership may be explained to the

participants and on-the-spot membership applications may be taken. D.4. Business Plan for Sustainable Growth and Financial Stability.

o Efforts are put in organizing more conferences and workshops. o More activities to be organized jointly with other technical societies. o Society Chapters should organize events jointly.
