What it means to be veganVegan is a term that was created to define a consistent ethic
with respecting conscious earthlings that is demonstrated
by shifting our foundational behaviors and perspectives in
recognition that humanity has formerly not considered other
species' equality in our cultural practices. Vegans recognize
and rationally respond to the fact that all sentient, individual
animals (human and non-human) seek the same treatment
as well as share and experience the same basic emotions
and desires in life: love, happiness, empathy, dignity, respect,
peace, truth, liberty and justice.
A brief history of the termWhile the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness provid-
ed scientific proof that animals are fully conscious individuals
when issued in 2012 by a comprehensive team of neurosci-
entists including Stephen Hawking, Humanity's earliest and
known greatest ethicists and geniuses (including Socrates,
Hippocrates, Plato, Da Vinci, Edison and Einstein) over the
centuries to modern times have recognized this reality. For
more than 6,000 years, the Jains of India and the Buddhists
of Asia have observed the principle of Ahimsa, which can
be summed up in a single sentence: "Do not injure, abuse,
oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture or kill any creature
or living being."
So although a vegan ethic is not a new concept, the term
VEGAN was created by Donald Watson in 1944 in recogni-
tion that the former definition of vegetarian was no longer
a solid ethical position, but one that had been reduced over
time to more of a dietary preference and didn't recognize
the harm and unnecessary killing done to animals and in-
sects in the process of exploitation for dairy, eggs and their
non-flesh products such as down/feathers, wool, angora,
silk and honey.
Confusion for society as to what being vegan means is cre-
ated when people identify themselves as vegan for reasons
that are not necessarily consistent with the ethic in which
the term was created (as in only eating a plant-based diet
for health or allergy purposes) and their other behaviors
are inconsistent with vegan ethics, such as going to a rodeo
or wearing leather belts, coats or boots.
