Dear Parents,

Hello Spring – Good bye Winter!!! ( I hope I am not dreaming.) As we come back from our spring break, I hope that the students have had the time to rest, relax and enjoy family time. As we begin our final few months of school, it is important that our students had taken the time over the Spring Break to refocus and set goals that will help them have the most successful final term ever! Working in a middle school affords us the opportunity to watch children grow into responsible young citizens, a developmental stage that requires the support and understanding of the whole community. It is a time of learning as students encounter new people and new experiences that challenge them to look at them-selves and their classmates in different ways. One way in which we encourage our students to look at the bigger picture, at their role in the community is through providing them opportunities to leave school property and interact in the community as a member of that community. Our goal is to help our students un-derstand their personal responsibility and their collective responsibility as they learn to navigate their new roles. It is more than just expecting kids to behave in an acceptable manner while off school property and more about them learning to understand their connection to the community, their responsibility towards the community, and their relationship to it. We recognize that it takes a whole village to raise a child – and we are delighted that our village wants to be a part of our school community. We ask parents to continue the conversation at home about family expectations for community behaviour. As well, April is the month of ACCEPTANCE. Accepting differences and cele-brating our won uniqueness is essential. As Joshua Liebman once said, “Let us learn to accept ourselves – accept the truth that we are capable in some direc-tions and limited in others, that genius is rare, that mediocrity is a portion of al-most all of us, but that we can contribute from the storehouse of our skills to the enrichment of our common life.” As well, Paulo Coelho reminds us that “ We can never judge the lives of others, because each person knows only their own pain and renunciation. It’s one thing to feel that you are on the rights path, but it’s another to think that yours is the only path.” Welcome back everyone and here’s to an exciting and successful last term! GRASSI Greats Mr. Krohe’s 4A students have been working on the creation of their “News For ‘A’ Fairy Tale” newspaper.

The class visited the Rocky Mountain Outlook and talked with local journalist who helped the students write

up an article. Below is a great picture of 4A done up as if they were on the front page of the paper.

LAWRENCE GRASSI MIDDLE SCHOOL GARDEN The Alpine Edible Schoolyards consists of a small group of passionate community organizers, program developers and

gardeners. We are seeking energetic individuals to strengthen the core of our organization to help bring it all together.

We are in need of people who can help with accounting, grant writing and fundraising. If you are interested in being

part of our organization or would like more information, please email me [email protected]

We are also looking for skilled volunteers to help construct a tool shed on the weekend of April 18th. If you have any

skills/tools relating to construction, we could use up to 6 people on Sunday. The design of the shed is completed and

the building permit has been approved. We will have an expert on site, but need some extra hands to help complete

the project. If you have a few hours to spare on either Saturday or Sunday, please email me at [email protected]

Please feel free to pass this on to other community members that be interested in helping out.

Thank you so much,

Kelly Smith Grade 8 Math/Science Teacher LGMS

Mme Desautels and Monsieur Vallee—Class Project

In November of last year, LGMS parent council suggested that our students become involved with a contest. The aim of this contest was to promote our Canadian National Parks. This worked well in the context of our Humanities program. As well the grand prize was an all expense paid voyage to Quebec City. Parks Canada would provide programming to help our students understand Canadian History and the beauty and diversity of our country.

With this in mind, we led our students to create a 60 second video which encompassed our closest national park; Banff National Park. Our students researched park: history, geography, activities, economic impact, and ecological sustaina-bility. We also looked at the technology necessary to create the film short, as well as, the art of story boarding.

The result of this planning was that from both Grade 8 classes, eight films emerged. As classes, we narrowed this field to one film. It was that film that was submitted to the contest. It was then that the voting began. We encouraged our friends, our families and our collegues to review our work and…. vote, vote, vote!

The voting has lasted for three weeks. It was our pleasure to find out yesterday, April 9th , that our efforts have paid off. How excited we were to find that LGMS was recognized as the second place winner of this contest. Out of 56 videos, from all across our country, we were awarded second place.

This has been a wonderful journey for our students and wouldn’t have happened without the support of the following people and organizations:

Lisa Cohen-Wallis, Spencer Schneider, Carolyn Headmann-Cohen, Carolyn Shoepp, David Headmann, Tina Tricco, Bren-

da Birch, Carrie Harbin, Tracey Wilkins, Dianne Schneider, Kevin Cohen-Wallis, Daniela, Griesser, Cindy Kelly, Aman-da Waters, Jacqueline Dumas, Carole Buetler, Mike Quigley (www.quigley.tv#home), Rob Murray, CBC, Banff/Lake Louise Tourism, Rocky Mountain Outlook and Safeway.

We also need to congratulate these students: Jane Cohen-Wallis, India Schneider, Erika Teskey, Sam Messier and Miri-am Griesser. These young ladies produced and starred in the winning video short. We were impressed with how a simple project can impact so many people. This is learning at it’s finest.
